More Unexpected Blessings

I am writing this on Wednesday evening, but it is intended to be posted for Thursday...we shall see...I may go ahead and post it tonight. Let's see what develops as I write...

This morning I reposted an old post from about 9 years ago entitled Unexpected GiftsIt just seemed appropriate to share it again after so many years, and especially on a day when I think many of us were needing some encouraging thoughts.  I was listing some of the many ways God has surprised us through the years with "unexpected gifts"...blessings from "out of the blue" that were a total surprise to us.  The neat thing about most of them was the timing...in every instance it seemed as though these "gifts" were sent to us one way or the other at a time when we needed it most.  Only God could have orchestrated that because He was truly the only One Who knew what we needed and when. That is what made these events so significant in our minds.

Today (Wednesday, January 20, 2021), was another of those kind of days. This morning as we watched  our President and the First Lady bid farewell and walk up those steps into Air Force One for the last time, it was a rather emotional moment for us, and I expect for many of you as well. If not, well, then, just please just try to appreciate and respect the rest of this story because it was special for me.

As I stood there watching them depart on Air Force One, it was a bit overwhelming in many respects. And I was at the point where I couldn't bear to watch another minute of the news broadcast as things were shifting from one story to another.  Right at that very moment my husband called my attention to the window to look out into the back yard at this sight:

Yes, Goldfinches all over the thistle seed sock that I had recently hung up in the back yard in hopes they would come.  And they chose this very moment to show up!

What a delightful and joyful time this was to watch! They were flying in and out from the trees faster than we could keep track of them.

And then, almost as fast as they came, they were gone again...but they accomplished their mission. Not only did they help take our minds off of a very difficult moment, but they also gave us hope.

Here is what I believe God was telling me:

Do Not Worry  (Matthew 6:25-34)

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

After this we decided to turn off the TV (news) for the rest of the day, and we went and took our morning walk:

It was so peaceful there, and I could hear many little birds twittering through the trees...possibly more finches and chickadees and Tufted Titmice.  They were going about their morning routine of finding insects and things to eat and singing happily as they flew about...without a care in the world. Again...God was taking care of them...and I know He cares for me...

I took a picture of this little oak tree showing off it's beautiful red leaves as a last nod to autumn here in Florida. The sunlight was shining through the leaves giving them such a glorious scarlet hue...yes, it is just a scrubby little wild oak tree, but it was decked out in its most beautiful dress and it seemed to want to be noticed, and so here you are...another unexpected "gift"...

We came back home and I stayed busy baking banana nut bread,

(had a couple of overripe bananas calling out to me that it was time to do something with them before it was too late!)
Oh, and I already had made some blueberry bran muffins for breakfast
because I had some blueberries that were starting to dehydrate in the refrigerator also calling out to me to do something!
And then, while the banana nut bread was baking in the oven, hubby was "calling out to me" and said something about cookies...and so I whipped up a batch of coconut pecan cookies.

I guess you could say these were "unexpected gifts", because I never expected to do all of that today, but the overripe bananas and blueberries and the need for cookies for the "cookie monster" all came together at the same time to inspire me to go on a baking spree. Doesn't happen all that often anymore, so gotta get them while they last!  Kind of looks like a bakery here!  (It smelled like one too, while they were baking! Yum!)

After lunch and our "afternoon nap" (yes...after all that work I needed one!) we took another walk. As soon as we drove down the little dirt road to our usual spot to park the car, I looked up in the top of a very tall pine tree and saw this beautiful hawk sitting up there watching us.

Because of the brightness of the afternoon sun the lighting is kind of difficult to see his full colors, but I believe he is a Red Shouldered Hawk, which is typical for that area.

Just as I was getting up and out of the car to step a little closer, he flew away...but I considered him another one of those unexpected gifts for today...because I was grumbling on my way over there that I wanted to walk somewhere different for a change because we rarely ever see many birds or other interesting things on this walk...and God just had to show me that I was wrong...He had this surprise waiting for me.

To top it off for this week, in one day I received two different messages from two people that I've never met in person...both bloggers...one that I've really only read a couple of times and made some nice comments, and the other has become a special friend who has very similar interests...anyway, they each are surprising me with something special coming in the mail soon! Totally out of the blue! When these things arrive I will be sure to share them with you...but wow! In one day to receive two such special "unexpected gifts"...well...all I can say is God is so good. He knows how to bless His children and sometimes He goes above and beyond to do so.
All I can say is, Thank You, Lord. I don't deserve such grace and mercy and love.
But Jesus loves to bless His children.

So, if you are feeling a bit discouraged or sad or disappointed...or worried about the future...keep looking up...up...up! Up to Jesus...because He has promised to take care of His children.  He knows what we need even before we do...and often the "unexpected gift" is already on its way before we even realize we are in need of being blessed. It's not always material things...it may just be a lift to your spirits...a touch of healing...a comforting warmth that comes over you when you need to feel loved or remembered...a word of encouragement or an answer to a prayer.

"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver."
Proverbs 25:11

(internet photo)

Have a blessed and beautiful day today...and be sure to keep an eye out for those little "unexpected gifts" that God may be sending your way! I hope you will write them down when they happen and share them with us if you can.  Sometimes they may be too personal to share, but just the acknowledgement that something special blessed you is an encouragement to the rest of us!
Be Blessed!

  1. It's peaceful here too, way out in the country. We've been using those thistle socks too. The little birdies really like those and the squirrels skip over them. I think it's gonna rain today. Hope so. I like rainy days.
Y'all have a blessed day! Keep lookin' up. Jesus is comin' back soon. xx

    1. Oh, I hope you get some rain...and send it on down our way. It's getting pretty dry again and the pond is starting to recede a bit. I love rainy days too...but today is pretty nice so far...sunny and warmer than it has been all week. I actually took off my outer flannel shirt. LOL. Oh yes, I am "lookin' up". I'm listening for that TRUMPET to sound and am watching for Him to step through the clouds anytime. We are more than ready.

  2. I love this post Pam. So many times in our life God has sent special blessings our way too. Like a sister-in-law who sent us a card in the mail and said she had been impressed to pray for us, not knowing that we were going through a rough time. Another time that a couple let us know that God had kept them up all night praying for us and they didn't know that we were on the verge of making a very wrong decision that would have completely changed our life because things were so bad. But I believe because of their faithfulness to pray, God helped us past that and we stayed the course and our life has been so blessed because of that. We've received an anonymous money gift that helped us through a bad time when hubby had been unexpectedly released from a church. There are others too. As you showed in your post, God is always faithful and is always with us and will always take care of us. I'm learning to be less fearful and trust Him.

Thank you so much for sharing these moments with us. You have brightened my day so much and just reinforced what I already know to be true.

Hope you have another blessed day today!!

    1. OH yes, you are in the ministry, so I KNOW you've had lots of these kinds of blessings unexpectedly. Yes, we've had those exact kinds of times in our life in the ministry, and it was always amazing to us to see how God provided for us even during the dark and disappointing times when we questioned whether or not we should even be IN the ministry. Oh yes! God is faithful to His servants...even when we may be the ones doubting or fearful or tempted to "drop out". And yes, I can attest to the truth that even in retirement, when we didn't really plan for our retirement, God has taken care of us. He planned for us when we were too ignorant or poor to plan for ourselves. The same God Who has brought you this far will continue to carry you through to eternity. You can rely on Him! Praise God!!

    1. Thank you, Colletta. We discovered the coconut pecan cookies at the grocery store bakery and loved them, but they are expensive. So I decided to find a recipe and make our own, and they are even better than the store's. Thank YOU for visiting.

  5. You managed to salvage a very sad day into a wonderful day! I think God had a lot to do with that, starting with the goldfinches. Matthew 5:4,Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted. As your heart was sad, God sent you comfort.

  6. Hi Pam, I am a fairly new reader to your blog. And so many times, I find comfort and inspiration from what you say. But, today I just have to comment. Our hearts are broken over this election, however, today your blog was wonderful. I too tried to avoid the news yesterday, and after a while I had to quit reading Instagram for a spell. Yesterday morning, as President Trump was leaving. I walked thru my living room, looked out of the feeder in my front and their said the biggest red cardinal I think I have ever seen. This is just a small feeder, and I only have sunflower seeds in it. After the cardinal left, I saw a Blue Jay, come and visit. Then I turned around and there was a Woodpecker, followed by a Nut Hatch. Now God had my attention. Next came a flock of dark eyed junco's. With the usual finch, sparrows, and to my surprise a couple of starlings. It was like they all fell out of the tree at one time. I have never seen this before. But, I am so grateful for my Heavenly visitors. I need time to heal physically, mentally and spiritually. And prepare for the months/years ahead. Thank you so much for sharing. My heart and prayers are with you and yours.

    1. Oh wow, Georgia! What a blessing to hear from you today! You have truly blessed me with these comments and the confirmation that what I was seeing yesterday was not just a single event, but something that God was doing for individuals in many places at the same time. This truly gives me great encouragement and hope and comfort that we are not to fear or worry...God's got this under control, and He will not leave us nor forsake us in these coming weeks, months, and years. He knows exactly what we need and when we need it...and He commands the "Heavenly visitors" to do His bidding whenever and to whomever He pleases. Wow! How amazing is that?! What part of the country do you live in? It is exciting to see that, as we already know, God is not only omnipotent,(all powerful) and omniscient, (all knowing), but He is definitely Omnipresent, present everywhere at the same time...and He knows how to show us His presence in the sweetest of ways. Thank you so much for sharing this today. This is a beautiful story. Do you have a blog that you write? I would love to get to know you better! Thank you for visiting. Another of those "unexpected gifts!"

  7. I'd never heard of those socks until we were gifted with them at Christmas! Tom wasted no time getting one of those shepherd hook-looking things; he's getting so much enjoyment watching the birds enjoy their buffet!

That's so neat about your bloggy friends' gifts! Yes, please show us when they arrive!
I had a thing to happen recently. When Victor (at Time for Reflections) cited his little book of devotions, I went looking online -- only to discover it was long out of print. I mentioned that in an off-handed manner, never expecting Victor to reach out to his friend (the author, Father Francis Maple) in Wales, asking if he happened to have an extra copy. Before I knew it, yes, Fr. Maple sent it to Victor who forwarded it to me.
Isn't the GIFT of friendship a precious thing?

    1. Yes, it is a precious thing! And we are all blessed to have these special friendships here. I feel like I know some of my bloggy friends better than some of my in person friends, and vice versa. Most of my in person friends never read my blog and they have no clue what I think or feel about many of these things. You all are like the pen pals that we used to have or dream of having in far away places who could share all about where they lived and what they did with us. I had one in 5th grade, a boy, who lived in Michigan I think. It was a school assignment. I think we wrote back and forth a couple of times. I have often wondered whatever happened to him! LOL. (but not enough to go looking for him. LOL) That was so sweet what Victor did. I need to get acquainted with Victor. I see him on other people's comments, but haven't gotten acquainted with him myself. Thanks for the tip. Have a blessed and wonderful day.

  8. I'm so happy to hear how God's little and unexpected surprises are brightening your days, Pamela! Yes, there are blessings everywhere, even in the midst of sorrow and disappointment. Yesterday was anything but happy, but I'm still holding out hope for the future and for President Trump's return. I know God is with him, too, through all of this mess. May God save and bless this nation!
Blessings, and thanks for brightening my day!

    1. One day at a time. Praying that God will protect us and our nation especially during these next 4 years. The news is just too upsetting. I have to stay away from it right now. And so we will encourage one another in our walk with the Lord and all the more as we "see the Day approaching". (Hebrews 10:25). Stand strong in your faith. God is still on the throne!!

  9. If I lived where you did, I would not have to watch tv. I love to watch birds and whenever I travel, I take in all the beauty that God gives us. I trust in His Word and his timing. Now I feel like baking some oatmeal banana walnut cookies. Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Oh my, that recipe sounds interesting...will you share it with us? That would be a good way to use bananas too!! Yes, I try to stay away from the TV as much as I can these days especially. We are trying to watch some old funny programs or other movies and such when we do watch tv and stay away from the news. But mostly I like to watch the birds outside and enjoy God's beauty around us. Thank you for visiting today.

  10. Lovely post, Pam! I especially loved the red oak leaves, as things are pretty much black and white up here right now! I always tend to see things like this as special blessings from God!

    1. Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed that lovely splash of color. I remember what it was like in NH for these long winter months of black and white and so much cold and dark so early...But even then, God showed us some special blessings in so many ways. Yes, life is so much more pleasant when we learn to look for those little gifts along the way! Have a blessed and wonderful week.

  11. I just love this post! I never even turned the TV on yesterday because I knew it would steal my peace. I chose to spend my morning with the Lord and my afternoon with the grandchildren. Even after Tim came home we never turned on the news. I love all the the things you counted as gifts. I started making a list every day after reading Ann Voskamp's 1000 Gifts. Back then there were days when it was hard to think of 10 things that had blessed me every day and to reach that milestone of 1000 things took FOREVER. Now I cruise right through because I've learned to look for and expect them. I try to stick to just 10 or 12 written down and counted each day, which means I usually just record the highlights, but sometimes I go beyond. I love looking back at them to see how the Lord has provided and I've started to mark them when I realize that they are an answer to a specific prayer. Talk about something that builds up your faith! Anyway, thank you for sharing your blessings today. It lifted my heart. It was feeling a bit down today after my daughter had to go to the ER. Her UTI has reached her kidneys and she is quite miserable. They tested her for sepsis, but ruled it out. Thank goodness! They prescribed a new, super powerful antibiotic and sent her home, but if the symptoms worsen or she gets a fever she has to go back to be admitted. That's a scary prospect these days when no one can go in to visit.

    1. I just read a little earlier about your daughter's trip to the ER. I am sorry I didn't see this earlier today, but I am praying for her to heal quickly now that she has a stronger antibiotic. Those uti's are nothing to play with. Wow. Hey, I just shared my Ann Voskamp 1000 gift book today with a friend who needed to start seeing life from a more positive direction. I pray that it will bless her as it has blessed me and you and so many others. Pray for her with me...she suffers from a lot of anxiety issues and I think this could be a way to help her counter some of the things she is dealing with. I pray so. Thank you for your friendship here!!
