Wednesday Medley: A Pie-Full Blog

Note from Terri, from her blog "Your Friend from Florida" :

Here is a medley of questions you may choose to answer on your Wednesday blog.  There aren't any rules and there is no obligation. Link up if you want to.  I'm doing this to fill my Wednesday and if you are interested, then I invite you to join in!!  It might be fun!!

I decided to play along this week for the first time. So here goes.

Questions for the Wednesday Medley...

NATIONAL PIE DAY – January 23

NATIONAL PIE DAY

National Pie Day is celebrated annually on January 23rd. (Not to be confused with March 14 which is PI π Day.)
National Pie Day was created simply to celebrate the pie.  It is a day for all to bake or cook their favorite pies.  Even more importantly, it is a day set aside for all to enjoy eating pies!
The first pies appeared around 9500 BC in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age.

1.  Okay, fess up.  Tell us your top three favorite pies, please.  Will you have some pie today?
My top three favorite pies would be: Apple, Cherry, Peach, Pumpkin, Blueberry, Coconut Cream Pie (but only with my mother's recipe).  I won't be having pie today, because I just now this morning found out this was National Pie Day. But who knows what might happen before the day is over!  My mother was the official pie baker for the family, and she always baked pies for any occasion. People in town even paid her to bake pies for their holidays! Her claim to fame was her Coconut Cream Pie, but apple was probably next.  She always baked an apple pie for my birthday in September, (at my request), and now that she is in heaven my sister Doris has that honor (if she has time. If not, Costco apple pies are pretty good).  Here is a link to a blog I wrote on "The Pie Legacy" several years ago.
2.  While we are talking about food... are you a picky eater or are you ready to try almost any new food?  What is the worst thing you have ever eaten?
I am not a picky eater, but I don't eat oysters or things like calimari (squid!), and that was probably the worst thing I've ever eaten by mistake...
3.  Baking could be considered an art as could cooking.  How do you define art?
To me art can be so many things...my daddy was an artist who could draw and paint. I used to be able to draw, but never learned to paint.  God is the Master Artist...
This Pink Perfection Camelia is what I'd consider true art!
Photo taken in my backyard this morning! God's artistry is the very best!
Pink Perfection Camellia lives up to its name!

4.  Tell us a really stupid joke that made you laugh, please. There are just too many to include here...

5.  January 23rd is also National Handwriting Day. Do you have nice handwriting? Did cursive writing come naturally or did you practice in those double-lined practice books until your fingers hurt?

I am a lefty, and so I'm sure my teachers had a fun time trying to teach me to write in cursive, however, I actually used to have very excellent handwriting, especially for a lefty. Nowadays it is hard to write. Computer use has ruined my ability to write by hand. My brain wants to go faster than my fingers can keep up, and arthritis makes it uncomfortable.
6.  Tell us something random about your week.
We went to Walmart yesterday, and discovered this beautiful red classic car parked in the parking lot.  I couldn't resist taking pictures. I love classic cars!!

It runs in the family. My brother Clifford in North Carolina has restored several old cars in his lifetime.  Here is the latest one he is working on:
That is my brother's bald head sticking out up there...He will probably not appreciate me showing that, but it's the only picture I got of him with the car! LOL.  Sorry, Cliff.  Love you.  (these pictures were taken last July when we went to his house for a family reunion)
Don't you just love this Pontiac Chieftan hood ornament?  I hope we get to see the car when he has finished restoring it.

Thank you, Terri, for hosting these questions for us.  Now I must go to her blog and figure out how to link up with the rest.  Okay, I found it HERE>  You can go see what other's have posted there as well!!
Have a Pie-Full Day everyone!!

    1. I know, what is it about old cars that sends us all into oohs and aahs? I guess we are just classic ladies/gents!! Thank you for visiting here today. I must go get better acquainted with you!!

  3. What a fun post! I too love vintage cars and so does my hubby. We have never owned one but a friend of ours buys them and restores them. He actually has the Buick that was in American Graffiti. It was burgundy in the movie but it is painted cream now and it is a beauty! I'm going to get a drive in it this Summer. I always considered baking/cooking an art form although I do have drawing and painting in my blood. I am having pie today. If I get around to doing a post, that will be my treat with my cuppa. Your camelia is gorgeous! Have a lovely day, Pamela. Blessings...Sandi

What a wonderful post that would be for us to see. Yes, you are quite the baking artist...what kind of pie are you having today? Would love to sample it! I'll have to check your post later. Thank you for visiting today. Always a treat for me to see you here.

  4. Pie Day!

I am inspired to make a peach cobbler. That's pie-ish... :) I really just don't want to make a pie crust and don't want to go to the store to get one. Cobbler is easier!

She moved into a flat... har har.

    Love that old red car!

    1. I love peach cobbler, and yes, that is my favorite thing to do when I don't want to go to the trouble to make pie crust (or buy Pillsbury crusts). Cobbler is easier. Actually I did make an apple cobbler earlier this week...I forgot about that!! Glad you liked my joke. It's the best I could do on the spur of the moment...

    1. Obviously I can't count! LOL. I just love pie!! Yes, a ride in that old car would have been fun, if I could have found the owner. I guess I could have gone into Walmart and called him on the loud speaker! 'Could the owner of the bright red classic car in the parking lot please come out and give this classic lady a ride?" LOL. That would have been fun!!

  8. My stepmother used to make lemon pies for Hubby. It was his favorite. Since I an have a gluten intolerance, I don't do pies or cakes. We always used to have pumpkin and sugar cream pies on Thanksgiving. (store bought) I love the picture of the red car. I look forward to seeing the one your brother is restoring. P eace and blessings.

    1. Lemon Meringue pies are yummy too. Pumpkin...never had a sugar cream pie that I know of. I hope my brother will get that car restored one of these days. He stays very busy with lots of projects, but working on old cars has always been his favorite, ever since he was old enough to hold a wrench in his hand!

    1. I can't count, obviously. I love homemade pies. period. LOL. Better HOmes and Gardens cookbook...mine was a wedding shower gift almost 50 years ago! It has seen a lot of action and spills of this or that as I worked the recipes next to it. But it is a keeper!! Yes, I love the old red car too. Would have loved to have taken a ride in it! But the owner was nowhere in sight!

  11. Cherry and apple pies are my absolute favorites! And if I'd known it was pie day today, I would have planned to bake one. I'm right-handed, Pamela, but my handwriting has gone to the dogs because most of my writing is done on the keyboard. Maybe I should make an effort to work on getting it back!
    Blessings!

    1. You know they aren't even going to teach kids cursive writing anymore in school. I think that is a terrible mistake, but what do I know? I do try to write things occasionally in my journal, but it is such an effort and I like typing so much more...(I've gotten lazy). Wish we could share a piece of pie right now!! Cherry or apple would both be perfect...or maybe one of each.

    1. Thank you, Barbara. My mother had the gift of pie crust...I try, but lately I've mostly cheated and used the Pillsbury pie crusts that you can buy in the box that come in two rolls. They are pretty good. My mother would never have approved, however! LOL. Hopefully she isn't watching! I can almost hear her saying "Pamela Anne!! Do it the right way!!" LOL. She was a good role model.
