A Cozy Nook and Small Blessings

Our blogging friend Myra over at "Respice, Prospice", had a great post today about "Simple Pleasures", and she included a list of "Reasons to be Happy"...which was a fun kind of list...nothing too deep, but "simple pleasures". It wasn't her own list, but she asked us to try and figure out which three would be on her own list, and then to also name our own three favorite things from the list. It was difficult to narrow it down to just three, but I said that for me it would be "going outside, taking pictures, singing and making new friends" (I obviously can't count...that's four), and then I added "taking hot showers and writing a story".

If you read further into her post you will see a link to a great article by Sean Dietrich of "Sean of the South", entitled "Things I Love". I loved that little story too, and highly recommend it for your reading enjoyment this morning.

So, since it is Friday and I really don't have any new photos to share today for Friday Foto Friends, perhaps this little exercise is in order. I may throw in a few photos here and there because, well, taking pictures is one of my favorite things to do...and why take pictures if you aren't going to show them to someone?

The other day on my "Wednesday Treasures" Post, I talked about creating an "Island of Calm" in the midst of the chaos of our world. I shared a picture of my little "office space" where I create these posts, and said that office space sounded "so stark and busy and unfriendly", and I asked my readers for some better ideas to call this space. There were several great ideas:

Sandi from Dandelion Tea suggested that I call it a "nook". I liked that thought, and looked up the word "nook" to see what else it suggests:

synonyms, antonyms, idiomatic expressions, and related words for nook, like: hole, niche, recess, angle, cavity, corner, cove, crevice, glen, hideaway and retreat.

Interestingly, my friend Mildred, formerly of "Laurel Wood", suggested that I call it a "Sweet Retreat"...which goes along with the "nook" idea above, and also is reminiscent of my "Dream Home" story from my Tuesday 4 post this week.

Myra, from Respice, Prospice, suggested "Pam's Nest", which again is kind of a little hideaway nook...

Terri, from "Your Friend From Florida", thought "Island of Calm" would be a great name...

And Sparky, from "My Thoughts Exactly", seemed to agree with Terri.

Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions and ideas. I love them all and am still thinking about this, and perhaps as we move on in this post we can come up with the exact name...This little "nook", or "nest", or "Sweet Retreat", or "Island of Calm", is definitely one of the places that makes me happy each day when I come here to visit with you and share what's going on in my little world... I just took a few pictures of this space to add to the full picture of where I am:

Besides this picture that I already shared with you the other day:

Here are some of the things surrounding me here in my little "nook" (that word keeps returning)

These are some of my favorite wildlife photos that I took at our last home in the forest:

Of course you are all familiar with "Pamela's Victorian Cottage"....it sits right beside me so I can keep track of our little family and make sure they are all behaving throughout the day. Once in a while they inspire me to write about them:

Above them is this lovely shelf that my son the woodworker made for me several years ago when he was just getting started in his woodworking business. I love it! It has my "child's tea party" and "Buster Brown's Tea Set" on it...

On the other side of my desk is this bookshelf (that my son also built!) with cookbooks, books about teatime, and special mementos. The photo at the top is of "My Three Sons". I love this photo because it was the last picture taken of them together before they started branching off into their own worlds...marriage, college, and life in general... "My Three Sons" with no other attachments.

Behind my desk is this wall of "treasures"...the hutch my son the woodworker built for me, and "Nanny's Hoosier Cupboard"...

And also behind and beside me is "Nanny's China Cupboard" and this antique rocker that a friend gave me after she found it by the road somewhere. Wish we knew the history of who had rocked their babies in that rocker and then why was it put out in the trash to be taken by just anyone?

Speaking of loving to take pictures...this year I did something special for Christmas:
I ordered "My Pastbook" from Facebook, and this one was pictures taken from my Facebook timeline and photo albums over the past 10 years. They randomly selected pictures and I did change a few and edited some, but I wish I had taken the time to go through it more carefully and delete a few that were repetitious, but all in all I am VERY pleased with it.  My reasoning was that I never print my photos anymore and someday there will be no photo albums to look at. It did cost a bit of money, but not terrible...depends on how many pages you want, and to me it was worth every penny.

There are many of my nature photos with the captions that I had added to them on Facebook.

And it also included many family photos:

It makes a great "Coffee Table" book for our home, and I may do this every year from now on and select special pictures from the year to highlight. It is a lovely hardbound book, and well worth the money, I think.

Well, I hope you are thinking more about your favorite things... I guess I got kind of hung up here in my little cozy nook and didn't get much farther. My list of favorite things could go on and on and on, so it's best I come to a stopping point because hubby is getting anxious for breakfast and my tummy is growling as well...just like that bear above. LOL.

Oh, I just looked up from my desk and noticed these two pictures that didn't get mentioned:
The one on the left says "Be Thankful for Small Blessings", and the other is the theme picture for this blog: "When God Closes a Door, He Opens a Window".     This kind of sums it all up and expresses what I am feeling most...I am VERY thankful for small blessings, including this small "cozy nook" where I am writing to you, in front of the "open window" that God has provided that connects us together.

Be thankful for the "small blessings" in your life today...Have a wonderful Friday!

P.S.  AFTER posting this I noticed one more thing I should share in this room, and I think it will answer the call for what to name it:

Our dear blogging friend Barbara, from Sweet Tea and Sandals, gave me this lovely tea towel when she and her dear "Beloved" came to visit us in our previous home.  I have hung this towel in this little room ever since we moved here, because it is "My Room with a View"...and so that is what I think I will call my little space, "My Room with a View"...as I look out my "open window" and thank the Lord for His "small blessings" and my friends out here in blogland.  I will also remember to pray for Barbara as she misses her recently departed dear Beloved when I look at this little tea towel.

So that is that...welcome to "My Room with a View"!

  1. I enjoyed Myra's post, too, this morning, and I've loved your tour of your special nook, Pamela, if that's what you decide to call it. I think that's a great name for it! I never knew that Facebook offered to make a book of anyone's photos; I wish I could have gathered some of mine before I decided to leave the site, but then again, I could always use Shutterfly to make an album at some point. So happy it turned out excellently for you!
    Blessings!

    1. I think the Pastbook is primarily of photos that you have posted on Facebook already. I don't know if you can upload other pictures to it or not...I didn't look that far into it because I already had so many photos there to include. I love it as it also includes my captions and scripture references that I may have added to the pictures. You could probably still do the shutterfly idea. And I have decided to call this "My Room with a View"...see the P.S. that I added to the post above. It just suddenly all came together... Thank you for visiting "My Room with a View!" Have a blessed day my friend.

  2. What a wonderful post Pam. I too read Myra's Post and then the linked post. Then I was telling hubby about it and that I thought it was such a neat idea to write a list of the things you love.

Love your little cozy nook, Island, Retreat room. And I always love your pictures. You have a real good way with a camera and wildlife. That picture book is really nice. I've considered doing that too. After seeing yours I many have to consider it even more. Love it.

I think of the names listed above I really like Pam's Nest or it could be Pam's Nook.

Have fun deciding and have a great day.

    1. Thank you, Cathy! I am so glad you visiting my cozy little nook today, which I have decided to call "My Room with a View"...see the postscript above for how it came together. It is a room with a view of the pond as well as a room with a view of my little world through my computer...my "open window". I have been very pleased with my "pastbook" that I did through Facebook, primarily because I do post so many pictures there, and they did a good job of selecting random photos throughout the last 10 years, but you can do it for any year or album. Last year I actually did one for our "newlywed kids" of their wedding photos, as they had not put together any kind of album, and I had all the pictures in my facebook album, and it made a wonderful album for them. My DIL cried when she opened it. It was well worth the money! I hope you have a blessed and wonderful weekend!

  3. I love your cozy room and everything in it. I think all the names are very fitting. I love the book you ordered too, such a great idea. Have a great weekend Pamela!

    1. Thank you, Martha. This is probably the room that I spend the most time in throughout the day, and it reflects a lot about who I am and what I love. I have decided to call it "My Room with a View"...see the postscript above for my reasoning. Have a blessed and wonderful weekend.

  4. Aw, thanks!
Love your inviting us inside your sweet home ... now we see what YOU see. :) I'm so taken by that hutch your son built. I'd love to have one just like it. In the meanwhile, I'm interested in creating a nook 'feel' of my own. (Brain cells a-buzz!) This set-up in the guest room is okay; just not so warm.

Oh, one more thing! Love that rocker; criminal, that someone would actually toss it. I've a wooden rocker that belonged to my grandmother -- quite uncomfortable and ugly as homemade sin -- but it feels wrong to pitch. I never considered visualizing her rocking my father and his siblings in it. Neat!

    1. If you lived closer you could talk to my son about building one for you! It was a labor of love that I truly love. Thank you for your post this morning that got us all thinking about simple pleasures and favorite things. You got my wheels turning for sure! Yes, I agree about the rocker...someone must have been "off their rocker" to throw it away, but I am happy my friend found it and decided to give it to me!!! Treasure the rocker you have that belonged to your grandmother...that is something worth keeping regardless of how ugly and uncomfortable it is. Could it use a good refinishing/restoration to make it more attractive? Or some kind of special cushions to make it comfortable? Or lay a pretty quilt on it...it deserves some love... Have a blessed and wonderful day my friend.

  6. Those are all good suggestions as to what to call your comfortable place. I watch a lot of British TV and films. Their favorite term is "cozy". It's a cozy (a nook, crevice, etc.). Cute. Anyway, I like your little spot. Anything to tune out the world and listen to my Master's voice has my vote.
Hang on Patriot's. Next week could get very bumpy. We may be hiding in that comfortable place.
    Blessings. xx

    1. I so agree, Sparky. Tuning out and tuning in to the Lord, Who has only wonderful things to share with us when we listen for His still small voice. Yes, praying for next week and beyond. May God give us grace and wisdom and courage for the days ahead. However, I see no need to hide. God has us covered already under His wings. We are safely abiding...

  7. "Wish we knew the history of who had rocked their babies in that rocker and then why was it put out in the trash to be taken by just anyone?"

Whatever its story, it then found you. I think the original baby rocker would be very happy about that. 😊

    1. Oh, I like that thought Sandi..."the original baby rocker would be very happy about that..." Maybe I should write a story about that...if I were really a fiction writer, which I'm not, but it does intrigue me now that you've put it that way. Let's collaborate on this, okay? Love ya girlfriend!!!

  8. Perfect name. I know that if i shared what i have around me as I type, it wouldn’t be as interesting . I sit in the corner of my livingroom. it is nice, as I get to watch the world go by through the big window. Little things, we all have so many of them. It seems that all too often we,or I, forget to be thankful for those things.

    1. Hey, you get to watch the world go by through the BIG window! That is a blessing!! Think about it! God has given you a special "open window" on the world as well, and He also has shown you great and mighty things outside that open window...birds of the air and water, skies that are full of mystery and awe, fields of grain, woods dancing in the breeze...Oh, never underestimate the wonders of what you "get to watch" through your big open window. That is where the true treasure lies.

  9. Room with a view is PERFECT!!! That says it all. You have a beautiful view outside and beautiful views of treasures wherever you look inside. Perfect!!

    1. Well, thank you, Terri. I believe the true view is right here in this computer screen...my window to the world out there of friends and fellowship and encouragement and fun! Yes, I enjoy seeing what is physically outside my open window in my "room with a view", but I really love seeing what is inside this other window that leads to you and all our friends out there! That is where the true treasures lie!!

  10. I also love your cozy room. I love the pieces your son has built for you. They add charm to your "room with a view." I am slowly getting a few things done in our living room. I have some things left to do there. I am a pack-rat. I hope to be able to do a little bit each day. After the living room, I do not know if I do the kitchen or my computer room. I guess I will have to wait and see what happens.

    1. Hey, Rome wasn't built in a day, and things that have taken a lifetime to accumulate don't go away overnight, so we shouldn't stress ourselves over it. Do what you can as you can, but enjoy every day as you make a little progress, which is better than none. One day, one room at a time. Life it too short to fret over such stuff. Make a plan that is reasonable for you, and do the best you can...but life goes on, people need to see our smiling faces and hear from our hearts. That is what is really important... Enjoy your life!!

  11. Well. I was gonna suggest My Alcove of Wonder, but I then read Room with s view which is fitting.

Love all the special woodwork of your son...very talented. But, what I like best is the rocking chair...so warm, inviting, & comforting.

    1. Oh! "Alcove of Wonder" is amazing! And yes, I do sit here and "wonder" quite frequently about many things and also am amazed at the wonder of all the beauty that God has placed before us to enjoy, both here and out there, if we just open our eyes and look for it. Thank you for liking the woodwork from my son. Now that he is married and has a busy woodworking business, he doesn't have much time to build things for us, but we are happy for him and the wonderful success he and his wife are having with their business. That is such an answer to prayer! And yes, I love the rocking chair as well. It gives me a place to sit and ponder as I wonder...LOL. Have a blessed and wonderful day and weekend.

  12. You like naming things! It is a nice room with a great view so the name fits pretty well. There is the book "Room with a View" by E.M.Forster and the movie from that novel by the same name. The book seems to have turned out so well and I am happy you are enjoying it so much :)

    1. Thank you, Annie, for reminding me of that story, "Room with a View". I knew it sounded familiar. I must check out that book again and read it as I believe I must have read it long ago and the name has stuck with me! And so here I am in "My Room with a View"...looking out at the world through this monitor and also outside my window. I love the fact that I can meet so many people right here in my little room with a view. And regarding the "book"...yes, the photo "pastbook"...I do love it. Since I never get my photos printed anymore, it is an interesting way to save them. When one counts the cost of how much I would have spent to develop all of those photos and put them in albums, I believe this is a great bargain! I may do one every year from now on. Hope you have a blessed and wonderful day today!

  13. I had to think on it for a while and kept coming back to: Isaiah 32:18. "And my people shall abide in a peaceable habitation, and in safe dwellings, and in quiet resting-places. Then my people will live in a peaceful surrounding, And in secure dwellings and in undisturbed resting places." How about The Resting Place?

    1. Good Morning Stacy! Thank you for thinking about this. I love the verse in Isaiah that you quoted, and I claim that promise for all of us today... But as far as a name for my little nook here, I already decided to call it "My Room with a View"...where I can look out of my "open window" and see all of the beauty and opportunity that God has placed within my view...both outside physically, and here in my computer monitor, which I consider another open window. Even though this is a peaceful surrounding, I don't know that I actually "rest" here that much. I am always busy writing and reading (and paying bills, etc.) here in this space, but I can do it peacefully and happily and undisturbed (most of the time). Thank you for thinking about this, however. I love this interaction amongst us all!! We really are "connected" here through this open window in "My Room with a View". Have a blessed and beautiful day.
