Starting off the New Year with Geese, Snowmen, and No Worries!

Good Morning! Here it is, the first Monday morning of the New Year of 2021! The first Monday after the holidays, and I expect some people have to go back to work, or kids may have to go back to school. Thankfully I am no longer in that category of having to go to work or get kids off to school. I "did my time" in that regiment of life, and thankfully I am now enjoying retirement and no real scheduled responsibilities.  Although, like many others I have heard it said, I don't know how I ever had time to work now that I am retired...there is always something that has to be done! Doctor appointments, grocery shopping, housework, post-holiday clean up.

But before we jump into all that work, let's just relax and have a cup of hot tea or a cup of cocoa on this chilly January morning, and start the week off right!

Today my only "appointment" is our Ladies' Bible Study this afternoon.  I look forward to meeting with this special group of women each week.  We have been studying the book of Joshua..."Winning the Worry Battle", a Bible Study by Barb Roose.
It looks like our little mother at Pamela's Victorian Cottage is working on "winning the worry battle" with having so many little girls to look after.

Just in case you didn't notice, there is another new "little angel" added to the family, thanks to their kind Auntie from the city (a.k.a. my sister, who loves to give me these little dolls for Christmas each year). I expect this sweet little "Twinkling Star Angel" will add to the fun and excitement around Pamela's Victorian Cottage in the days and months to come.

We are working our way slowly through this Bible study book, because as is the case with most women's gatherings, we have lots of things to discuss and each week brings out more and more areas of need in the lives of our ladies...and we find ourselves spending more time encouraging one another in our walk of faith and life than in just plain old study. But God's Word is the foundation and backdrop for all of our conversation, and that is exactly how God intended it to be.   Here is one quote from the sidebar of our workbook from last week's lesson:

"If we remember God's generosity in those moments when we experience uncertainty,
then we can wait in faith for God to act."

And another one when we were studying in Joshua 7 about "fighting in fear", and it appears that even Joshua "melted in fear", or as we would call it, he had a "meltdown". But we saw that Joshua turned around his "meltdown" by turning toward God in his distress.  He expressed his truest emotions and brought his questions and concerns to God.  Our takeaway from that lesson was:

"When stress and fear are mounting, I can avoid a meltdown by pouring out my heart to God."

This little lesson actually helped me during the stress of the holidays by remembering that God is always there for me, and He is my strength and my refuge, even when my distresses are caused by my own lack of appropriate planning and preparation. I also have made a commitment that I will not allow myself to get into that same kind of panic situation again next Christmas. May God help me to remember this and start planning way in advance.

Speaking of having a "meltdown", if I don't move these snowmen away from in front of this fire, they may have a "meltdown" for sure! LOL!

I just realized that snowmen were playing an important part of our decorations this Christmas, and of course snowmen are fun to keep around even in January if it is cold enough!

Even in Florida you could work through your "worries" and anxieties a bit by having a snowball fight with the family:

Our family did do this, and it was fun until one landed in my hubby's cup of ice water and splashed it all over him...he actually thought we were outside in the snow it was so cold! LOL.

Yes, there were snowmen everywhere! Up at the cabin,

down on the pond,

and even up at the cabin in the hills above the train village...

Here's a little treat for you! I received a late "Christmas gift" (from myself) in the mail:
It takes a lot more breath than expected to make that thing work. LOL. Maybe that will be a good breathing exercise for me to work on each day.

I have seen this Bible verse floating around through our blogs and social media quite a bit lately. It is the theme verse for our Bible Study in Joshua:

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9 ESV

I believe (my One Word for 2021) this is also an excellent verse to carry with us into the New Year.  And the verse that precedes that one is also one that will help guide us so that we will learn more and more about trusting in the Lord and not giving in to worries and fears:

"Study this Book of Instruction continually.  Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it.  Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do." Joshua 1:8

Yes, study God's Word and BELIEVE what you read as you meditate on it day and night...and as you BELIEVE, you will want to OBEY...and only then will we prosper and succeed in all that we do and attempt to do!  If I were to make a New Year's resolution, it would be to do just that...

Well, since I can't really go outside and build a snowman or skate on the pond, I think I will take a lesson from these Canadian Geese who earlier landed on Still Waters Pond, and just glide gently into the new year with no worries or fears.  How about you?

    1. Our Florida snowball fight was fun until my hubby got soaked with ice water, but he was a good sport. He dried right up. LOL. I am glad you popped in for a visit. I hope you have a wonderful week too. we are blessed to be here in Florida with no real snow to deal with, right? Very thankful indeed. Happy New Year.

  2. I love this post Pam! We have lots of snowmen out this year, including a family of 3 out in front of my house (these 3 I plan to leave up for awhile). I'll probably take the ones inside down this week as I've slowly been working on taking our decorations down inside (slowly being the key).

Thanks for sharing the verse on fear. My word this year is "fearless". As I'm reading along in my Bible when I find a "fear not" verse I am making sure to mark it. As I have some big changes coming up this year, I am trying not to be fearful and just trust God with all the stuff. I keep remembering that He has never failed me yet and there is no way that He ever will fail me. So since I'm a daughter of the King of Kings exactly what do I have to fear? So fearless is the word and thoughts I'll be trying to cultivate this year.

Your photos of the geese on Still Water Ponds are gorgeous!

    1. Are the snowmen in your front yard real snowmen? I hope they can stay up for a while if it is cold enough! I am not quite ready to take our decorations down. Maybe a little at a time, but I am still enjoying the lights and the tree and the train and the snowmen...I guess I'm just not ready to shut it all down yet. I love your word "Fearless". I wrote to you on your post about it. Yes, as a daughter of the King of kings we have NOTHING to fear! God is always on our side and at our side! He will never let us go! Praise God!! Thank you again for visiting. I am so glad you came!

    1. Thank you, Linda. I am glad you popped in for a visit and enjoyed your stay! Please come back again. It doesn't take long to be cozy and warm here in Florida! And I can always put the kettle on for tea (or coffee) any time! Have a blessed week!

  4. Well just look at all of your cute snowmen! I used to collect Snowmen. Now....it's Santa's and I did refrain this year from buying one!!! LOL! But some folks may still have Christmas sales on....right????? LOL! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

    1. Somehow the snowmen have just gravitated toward me this year. I didn't realize I had so many until I started looking around. But they are cute, and at least these snowmen don't melt! LOL. Yes, there may still be Christmas sales on, but I tend to stay away from the after Christmas crowds. I know I may miss some good deals, but my sanity is more important. LOL. (what sanity some may say! LOL) Hugs and blessings to you and yours as well!

  5. I love the imagery of gliding into the new year, Pam, just like those beautiful geese. And thanks for sharing your cheerful snowmen with us, too. They are certainly a jolly sign of winter. Hoping we will have some snow here in Georgia before the winter ends.
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Martha. Yes, the geese just glide around on the pond like they haven't a care in the world, until a rival male shows up and then they drive him away. Or they take off with a lot of goose noise and fly away until later. Very entertaining. I do hope you will get some snow in GA too. Just praying for your state tomorrow to do THE RIGHT THING and get out and vote. (The RIGHT people, that is...and the real live people!) Praying for our nation so much. Take care and God bless you.

  6. What a fun visit! It sure brightened up my day. It's a dreary, drizzly day here. Even with the lights on it seems dark. I have Christmas all packed up and put away and am working on getting the house back in order...and in some new order since Tim got me a new desk. I am waiting on some organizing items I order for it from Amazon to arrive. I got the grandkids those boxed "snowballs" a couple of Christmases ago. My daughter made them go to the basement to play so I didn't see them do it and I have no idea what ever became of them. I thought they sounded like a lot of fun. Love my girl, but she stresses too much at the holidays to even enjoy herself. Hmmm...can I sign her up for your Bible study? I started a new one that will take me through the Bible in a year and my regular group continues. I got invited to join one at the church I started attending, but I don't know that I can fit in 3 studies. The two I'm already doing take a good bit of time every day. Being in the Word is good, but I think if it becomes a chore or burden it defeats the purpose! Love seeing the goose. The Canadians are among my favorite birds. We seem to have them here all year round. I love to see them fly overhead. Did I tell you a day or two after Christmas I saw a flock of snow geese fly over? Now that was cool. I've never seen that before! Thanks for the visit. I hope you have a great week!

    1. Oh, a flock of snow geese? I need to look them up so I would recognize them if I ever saw them. I wonder if they migrate this far south? Hmmm, I agree that 3 Bible studies at once might be a bit much. I have a hard time keeping up with one. But the fellowship is so good too. We need human connections so much...and when it is with God's Word as our focus, it is a special blessing for sure. Our kids usually get some kind of "toy" every Christmas that they can play with together one way or another. There have been air guns that shoot little ping pong balls, nerf wars, rubber dart guns and the old fashioned army soldiers, you know, with all boys...they need something to play with no matter how old they are. I just stay out of the way if I can...LOL. The snowballs were fun until my hubby got soaked. LOL. Can't wait to see your new desk. I hope you will post pictures when it is set up. It's nice to have your own space, isn't it? Have fun. Sorry it is so dreary and drizzly there. It was chilly here today, but nothing like what you have to deal with. The sun was shining. So we are thankful. Hope you have a great week too!

    1. Yes, it is freeing to know that God is still there for us even when we get ourselves into a mess. He knows just how to pull us out and get us back on track. I pray He will help me stay on track for this year so that I don't end up the same way again! I'm a slow learner about some things. Been missing your blog. Hope all is well with you? So happy to hear from you here, however!! Take care and have a blessed and wonderful New Year!

  8. What a cute whistle-blower you are! :) Gosh, I've not thrown a snowball since 1968. That sounds like such fun! Being a 'fretter' all my days, your new study sounds intriguing -- and so timely. Due to a couple members testing positive, our ladies group is on an indefinite hold. We're due to begin 'One Thousand Gifts' by Ann Voskamp, but I'm going to bring up your "Winning the Worry Battle" for their consideration. Just hope they won't ask me to facilitate. LOL!

    1. If you DO do the "Winning the Worry Battle" Bible Study, you will do just fine as a facilitator. It really isn't that hard of a study to do, and it lends itself to good discussion. Our leader really doesn't have to do that much. We take turns reading the lesson portions each week...we are taking our time because it is a rather long study...and we all share what the different questions mean to us or how this is impacting our own lives...You can do it! And yes, a good snowball fight should be in everyone's winter activity list. It is very cathartic! LOL. I hope your ladies are all getting well and not having serious issues with the Covid virus. Praying for you to stay safe and healthy. You will enjoy Ann Voskamp's study when you do get together. I love that book too.

  9. The geese are so lovely. That is one of the perks of Florida in the winter. All the extra birds, ducks, geese, pelicans, etc. You reminded me I haven't prepared anything for our Wednesday night small group. Hmmm. We are just picking up back up after the holidays and haven't decided what we are going to do for the next few months. Hubby charged me with finding a quick devotional to share. I better get after it. I always enjoy your posts.

I am glad you are able to get together again. Praying all stay well!! So glad your family is better! Thank you for visiting here today! Happy New Year!

    1. Wow! No snow for you? I am sorry! We were in the 40's this morning, which was chilly for us. This week will be a bit chilly again, after last week in the 70's and 80's. But the geese don't seem to mind and they appear to be enjoying our pond every day at some time or another. That makes me very happy! Happy New Year!!

I look forward to these times each day (or whenever I can sit still long enough!) Thank you for being a wonderful friend! I hope we can get together in 2021 for real!!Maybe a joint visit with Barbara sometime...something to think about. Take care and have a wonderful week.

  12. So much to enjoy on your blog today. You know I would love to have tea with you, and today I imagined myself sitting there in your warm home having a great visit. Oh how I'm missing my Bible Study/Glow group. We haven't met since last February. Most of us have health issues and are trying hard not to get covid. Alas, as you know, I got it. I sure don't want it again. I'm so happy for you that you're able to go and study God's Word with your friends. Mr D and I are doing a morning devotion from Billy Graham, afterwards we discuss how the message touches us, as a couple and individually. I love your little doll friends, I know they give you much pleasure.

    1. OH wouldn't that be "loverly"? To sit here in my warm home or yours and enjoy that cup of tea and a great visit! That would be such fun. I am sorry you are not able to have your Glow Group. I understand the reasons, but wish you could figure out a way to connect and encourage one another. I hope things will calm down enough soon for you to get together again. Thank you for understanding about me and my "little doll friends". They are sweet and they make me use my imagination, which is a good exercise to keep my brain functioning! LOL. Thank you, Mary. I've enjoyed this visit...and also at your kitchen table this morning!! What a pleasant way to spend the day.

I think I showed it in a previous post...maybe one or two back. I am blessed with good friends and family who keep me covered with fun gifts. I would love to see your Snowmen tree. I am still not quite ready to put things away. As long as I can still enjoy them without feeling like they are in the way, they will stay...probably until this weekend. LOL! Happy New Year to you too!
