I really didn't have a lot to share tonight, but thought I should at least share some blessings! There is ALWAYS something to be thankful for, right? We just need to stop and think about it and praise God for all He has done for us.
Yesterday afternoon we were both pretty tired. Just haven't really been sleeping well and we still seem to be catching up since we were sick for a couple of weeks following our trip. So we took a nap and we were both pretty sound asleep, and then we were awakened by a knock on what sounded like our bedroom wall, which is on the end of the house. It kept knocking, so I jumped up and looked out the window and didn't see anything. I went around to the doors and checked, and there was no sign of anyone anywhere. So I went back to bed, and we started to doze off and it started up again. This time we both got up and went outside and walked all the way around the house and still didn't see anything. We finally decided it must've been a woodpecker in the tree outside our bedroom window. That's the only thing we could figure out. I am thankful it wasn't anything else and there was no real cause for alarm, but you know how those strange things that happen kind of unnerve you? Yeah, well, Praise God everything was fine. However I did see this while I was outside looking for "intruders".
This beautiful "Gulf Fritillary" butterfly was fluttering around in the Butterfly garden. She was so lovely, and it made the wake up call worth all the "anxiety" of the moment...Perhaps God was knocking and wanted me to see this beauty before it flew away...
I thanked the Lord for allowing me to enjoy these few moments of peace and joy in the garden.
This verse was in our devotions for yesterday:
John 14:27 NKJV
27 "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
Perfect, right?
A little later that afternoon a young boy from our neighborhood came to the door and asked if we had any kind of little jobs he could do for us. What a surprise! He actually just recently moved into the little yellow house over across the way from us. He seemed like a very polite and sweet young man of about 11 years old. We told him to come back today after he gets out of school and we would have something for him to do. And so he did. We have lots of little branches that are constantly falling from our big oak trees into the yard, and we always have to rake them up before we can mow the grass. Especially after the recent storms, we have had a LOT of raking to do, and quite frankly, we are getting too old for that! So when he came this afternoon we gave him a rake and set him to work raking up some branches. He was so happy! After he had completed the job so very nicely, we paid him a reasonable amount, and he was thrilled. He said he is wanting to do little jobs so he can earn some money to buy himself a phone. We thought that was very refreshing to see a young person willing to work and save his money so he can buy something, rather than expecting his parents to buy it for him. I am impressed with this young man, and we told him that we will have other jobs periodically for him to do, especially when we have any storms that knock down more branches! He was very excited and happy and did a very good job. Hubby and I both felt blessed to have this young man come to our door in such a manner. God knew we needed the help! Next time I will ask if he minds if I take his picture. Maybe I should ask his parents first. Yeah, that's probably a good idea.
Speaking of jobs getting done, over the past weekend we had some fellows who are actually from our church come over and do some work for us under the house. This is a manufactured home, and because we sit on a bit of a slope overlooking the pond, there is a tendency for rains to kind of erode the grounds around us. We wanted to doublecheck to make sure things weren't getting unlevel under there, so they came and checked everything and did some work on the jacks that are already installed under the house just for that purpose. Then they reset some of the block columns and secured them better than before, and everything is now in much better shape. It wasn't really all that bad, but we just wanted to be sure. We are thankful for skilled men who knew just what to do and did it efficiently and reasonably!
While they were doing that, I found this strange looking fella on the skirting of the house around the corner:
Wheel Bug "
The wheel bug, Arilus cristatus (Linnaeus), is a moderately common, widely distributed, beneficial assassin bug that preys on pest insects. However, its bite can be more severe than a bee sting, and both nymphs and adults should be avoided or handled with caution."
You can be assured that I did not try to pick him up or handle him. I do, however, like that he preys on pest insects. He is welcome to all the pests out there anytime! LOL. I haven't seen him since that day, however.
Since I really haven't been out and about all that much the past couple of days, I didn't have a whole lot of anything new to share in the way of photos. And so I thought you might like to see how our little family in Pamela's Victorian Cottage are doing these days! They sit right here beside me in my "Room with a View" where I do all of my writing, and I sometimes look over at them to see what they are doing...and then I realize that they can't do anything unless I pay them some attention. Otherwise they just kind of stand around looking at me with that look of "why don't you come over and play with us sometimes?" LOL. And so tonight I thought it was about time they started getting ready for Thanksgiving. Oh, if you aren't familiar with Pamela's Victorian Cottage, you can click on the link for it over on the right column of this blog under the heading of "Some Special Topics". That will take you to all the blog posts I've written about them since Pamela's Victorian Cottage first came into existence. Maybe you will enjoy reading about their special place.
Here's the whole family, bustling around and getting the house prepared for the Thanksgiving holiday that is coming up very soon...
There's the little mother, looking at the giant pumpkins and turkey that the two little friends from the farm down the road brought over to help out with the Thanksgiving dinner.
Here's our little farm friends at their house just before they took the turkey and pumpkin to the big house...
Everyone is always excited when company comes!
They have set up the table for tea and cookies...
For the family in Pamela's Victorian Cottage,"Life is one big tea party" all the time! LOL.
See here? Mama has already put the teakettle on the stove!
It's so much fun having guests for Thanksgiving Dinner!
The children upstairs are playing dress up and actually thinking about Christmas, but they need to remember that Thanksgiving comes first, and we should always set aside a special time to give thanks to God for all His wonderful blessings. The only little boy who lives in the house is already saying his prayers of Thanks!
Yes, these are happy and exciting days at Pamela's Victorian Cottage! They can hardly wait for Thanksgiving day to come!
And now they are all reciting the 100th Psalm, a Thanksgiving tradition that has been around since we were all children!
Let's all recite it together:
Psalm 100 KJV
1 "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
2 Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
3 Know ye that the Lord he is God:
it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise:
be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting;
and his truth endureth to all generations."
I hope you enjoyed this little story from Pamela's Victorian Cottage. Stay tuned for future adventures!
Good Night Friends!
Hi Pamela, I had a nice visit with you today. How nice that the young man could help you out and earn some extra money for himself. Nice also that the men helped you with your home. I love the Madame Alexander dolls. They make me think of you mom. I have started decorating for Christmas now. Enjoy decorating your Victorian home!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susan! I also love the Madame Alexander little dolls. They are actually Christmas ornaments (Hallmark), and my sister gives me a new one every year for Christmas! That's why I have so many and the family keeps growing! And yes, my mother did collect the real Madame Alexander dolls, and had quite a collection of them. I wish I had a picture of them all! The only one I have from her collection is my Anne of Green Gables Doll. Plus I have a few other of the smaller 8" dolls that were gifts to me as a child. Oh, I know how you love to decorate for Christmas! I can't wait to see what you are going to do! Be sure to share your pictures when it is done! Happy Thanksgiving in the meantime!
DeleteI think you may get be right about God wanting you to see that magnificent butterfly! Wow!
ReplyDeleteYou know, maybe the little boy came to your house for Halloween! You’re right how you just don’t see such a young child with a cheerful work ethic. His parents are doing something right!
I’m all for the good bugs as long as they don’t land on me!
Thankyou, Debby. And yes, I think our neighbor boy may have been one of the kids on Halloween. I'm glad you mentioned that, because I wonder if he felt safe to come here because of how we received him then...and also gave him the little "prayer Scripture card" with his candy. I hope that it is so, but either way, I pray we can be good neighbors to him and perhaps his whole family, whom I haven't met yet. And yes, about the "good bugs" not landing on me either! LOL. But the butterfly was truly a gift! Hope you have a lovely day!
DeleteI smiled, reading about the young man who came to rake at your house. It reminded me of our Mandy and Jamie when they were young, maybe 7 and 12. Alex would have only been about 2, so too young to help. Whenever we had snow, they would go over to our neighbors across the street while they were still at work and shovel their sidewalks and driveway. They had a corner lot so it was a LOT of sidewalks. They were a bit older and the kids loved to surprise them. They would come home and stand outside looking all around trying to figure out who shoveled for them. The kids would be hiding and peeking out of a window where they couldn't be seen. They never did tell them who shoveled and I don't thing they ever figured it out. All three used to do things like this as they grew up. Very sneakily though. If they got caught, they would be so disappointed. Once Alex was going to mow a single ladies grass down the street while she was at work. Well, she had stayed home that day because she didn't feel well and she caught him at it. :-) He was so sad that she knew who had been mowing her grass all summer.
ReplyDeleteGosh, I miss having my kids close by.
I enjoyed seeing your cottage all decked out for Thankgiving. The family definitely has a lot of work to do preparing food for that many people!
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
What a sweet thing for your children to do when they were kids! That shows that they had good parents, who taught by example. I am sorry that your kids aren't all close by. Doesn't one of them live near you? I know your sweet granddaughter spends a lot of time with you, which is truly a blessing. I know it is hard to not have them all close. We are blessed to have our Benton and Rose here near us, and Scott is not that far. Of course our middle son, Matthew, is in heaven, but I wonder if that really isn't all that far away? Someday we will see him again and be together for eternity, so we look forward to that day. Thank you for visiting. Thanksgiving is coming very soon!!
DeleteI love all things minature, and as a child loved doll houses and doll furniture, I never had a doll house but did get a few pieces of doll furniture. I LOVE THIS HOUSE. its just too precious for words. my favorite part is the tea party, the little girls all dressed up. and the kitchen I love.
ReplyDeletethis is so sweet that the child is working for money. not common these days.. this is something my brother, who is 4 years younger than I am would do back when he was that age. he started cutting the grass at Daddy's church when he was 12 and did it for years. it was a huge place to cut and took him half a day every Saturday. he saved and saved and at age 15 went to work as a bag boy in David's supermarket. the old ladies loved him, and would pay him to walk them home and carry their purchases. at age 16 he got his license and bought a car for cash, 500 dollars he had saved from 12 to 16 years old. this little boy will go far for sure.. great post, love it
Your new young neighbor is being raised to understand that hard work has benefits. Good for his parents raising him well!! In a couple of years, he will be old enough to mow for you, too! I enjoyed seeing your little house full of holiday makers!! Always fun, Pam. I'm glad you now have your home well secured and can rest easier because of it. Love & hugs!!
ReplyDeleteI looks like you have an ambitious, young entrepreneur in your neighborhood, Pamela. What a blessing to see kids willing to work for something and not just expect their parents to give it to them. I'll bet his parents are so proud! I love the whimsy and joy in your Victorian cottage family, too. As adults, we can still nurture our imaginations and be happy in the little things. Blessings always!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fright, hearing that knocking on the bedroom wall! So glad that happened during the daylight; I wouldn't dare step outside in the pitch dark.
ReplyDeleteYes, like others have said, I'm so impressed by that young man's "can do" attitude. I wish someone like him would come along and offer to clean up our own yard. Those little tree branches can be such a nuisance. At least we no longer live in an HOA community. Always a reason to give thanks, lol.
Hi Pamela! I loved visiting you today! That butterfly is so beautiful. The knocking that startled brought you quite a blessing and I am glad you shared it. You took some great pictures! So glad you had some skilled people from your church to help you get your home secured and leveled. It's so nice that the little neighbor boy helped you out. Sounds like he is a young man with good work ethic. Kudos to him and his parents. I love your Victorian Cottage. What fun. I have always loved doll houses. I hope that you continue to feel better and that you have a good weekend! See you again soon!
ReplyDeleteI've finally had to succumb to age and will hire a yard service to deal with our kazillion leaves this year. I just can't work all day long anymore. Hurts too much. I cried "Uncle!" 😂
ReplyDeleteAssassin bugs will give one a nasty bite. I only handle with thick gloves.😊
Happy to hear that you are feeling better. Glad that everything was okay outside. Beautiful butterfly. That is sweet of the boy asking if he can do some work for you. That was nice of the men from church too. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteWe had a similar knocking a couple of months ago. It got me out of bed, and I was freaked out for a bit, but we concluded it was a woodpecker too. Had never before heard one pecking in the dark.
ReplyDeleteWe would be thrilled for a young person to present themselves for odd jobs to make some money. We've had that relationship in the past with a few young men, but they've grown up.
Afternoon naps are restful, except when you are awoken unexpectedly, but then you did have the chance to see the beautiful butterfly, Pam. That neighborhood youngster sounded delightful and your thought of meeting his parents is a good one. It’s always good to do preventative maintenance when there’s no problems so hopefully there will be none in the future. The dollhouse residents and friends look prepared for the upcoming holiday.
ReplyDeleteHow refreshing to read about the young man who did some work for you to buy a phone! He's being brought up right!
ReplyDeleteThe butterflies are beautiful. One of most memorable experiences was being taken to a butterfly garden on the UF campus in Gainesville. Tons of butterflies! It was amazing.
I'm always loving seeing your doll house. I've thought at times of getting one to decorate but never have. So cute!
Have a nice weekend.
I am in awe of your little friends and the entire tableau. Your dolls and figurines are one of a kind gems. I love how you weave the story into them and you are so creative, both in writing and in your decor.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are feeling better and taking it easy to fully recover. What a place you have to do that!!
Wonderful preventative work done on your home by trusted friends. We sure don't want you two slip sliding away in the storms.
Sue
P.S.
DeleteOh yes, That young boy is a real treasure and has been brought up right. I would have found jobs for him too. Blessed to be a blessing.
