A little abstract beginning to our day...
What's that, you say? Well, believe it or not, that is the three sand hill cranes flying over Still Waters Pond this morning. I couldn't capture them quickly enough with my "real camera", which is VERY SLOW, and so that is what I got. But I think it makes for a very interesting photo, nonetheless, don't you? It might just win a prize or something somewhere. LOL.
Now this is what I was really watching, but it was still too low of light and the pictures are not very clear. This is the Great White Egret having her breakfast on Still Waters Pond:
Still not too clear, but you can see her shadow!
Getting a little better as the sun was rising behind us...
Actually, she flew away when those Sand Hill Cranes flew over top of her. I was watching this bird when they flew over, and that is why everything was so blurred. Too much excitement all at once! LOL.
Also, way across the pond was the Great Blue Heron, sitting on that fallen tree over the water, watching for something good to appear for his breakfast:
Again, it was still kind of dark and cloudy, so these pictures are not very clear, but you get the idea:
I thought it was interesting that he chose that fallen tree to stand on, like a balance beam or a tight rope!
I'd say he's very sure footed, and of course, heights don't bother him! LOL.
Meanwhile, this is what the sun was doing behind us over in the east on the front side of the house:
Kind of a dramatic sun rising, shining on the accumulated clouds above...
It was a beautiful start to the day, which soon became just a cloudy kind of morning with some unexpected rain showers a little later on. Started out around 68 degrees, and the high is now 82 as I write this afternoon. (Tuesday) Thankfully that is about has hot as it has been getting lately, and we are very thankful for the "cooling" down little by little day by day. Fall is definitely trying to get here...
Now let's switch to the afternoon, when the Sand Hill Cranes came back "home" to roost for the evening. They often check in with us to see if we've left them any treats on the lawn...
There were in luck on this day, as hubby decided to throw out a little cup of bird seed when we saw them out there waiting for us...
So of course they marched right up there to check it out. I wonder if you can tell which one is Abe, the "colt" ? It's pretty hard to do now that he is pretty much a full adult, and should soon be taking off on his own...
Well, did you figure it out? He is the one on the left. His top notch is still just a little duller in color than the other two. That's the only way I can tell. Soon the parents will be forcing him to move on by himself so they can get back to nesting again, probably after Christmas. It will be interesting to see if they build their nest out there on the marshy island again as they have done the past few years. So stay tuned for further "developments".
But wait! Still Waters Pond wasn't finished giving us blessings for the day! As I was cleaning up after supper and preparing to go to choir practice, I couldn't help but notice the beautiful sunset developing in the skies over the pond...so back outside I ran with my camera (actually, the cell phone camera does best on the sunsets and sunrises I've discovered) So stand in awe with me as we witness the beauty of God's changing of the color guard at the close of day:
As I stood there celebrating the glorious artistry of God's masterpiece in the skies, this Psalm came to my mind:
Psalm 8
The Glory of the Lord in Creation
To the Chief Musician. On the instrument of Gath.
A Psalm of David.
1 "O Lord, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth,
Who have set Your glory above the heavens!
2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have ordained strength,
Because of Your enemies,
That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
4 What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?
5 For You have made him a little lower than the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet,
7 All sheep and oxen—
Even the beasts of the field,
8 The birds of the air,
(just thought I'd put that one back in there to go along with the Psalm!)
And the fish of the sea
That pass through the paths of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth!"
Amen!
I hope you enjoyed these "special blessings from Still Waters Pond". These pictures were all taken in one day, from sunrise to sunset! In between these special moments we lived our lives, went to town, ran errands, fixed breakfast, ate lunch, (took a nap), prepared supper, went to choir practice, came home and found out a dear friend had called me, so I called her back and we talked for over an hour. She lives in Ohio and we try to stay in touch several times a year, and our conversations are always long and enjoyable. She wanted to know all about our trip and the wedding and life in general, and I enjoyed hearing about things that she has been doing...a recent trip to Italy, a "retreat" with special friends in Minnesota, a road trip to Massachusetts with friends, and sadly the recent death of one of her best friends of over 50 years. We've known each other approximately 35 years, and our boys were in high school together. Her son is now a pastor, and he was especially a good friend of our son Matthew. There's another story tucked inside that one, but I won't go into that now. Our friendship is very special and unique indeed. I treasure all of my friends, and I find that the older we get, the more valuable they become.
And you are each very valuable to me as well. Thank you for being my friends.
Have a blessed and beautiful day. Look for the special blessings God has waiting for you outside your window!
I love the smeared and oh so beautiful photo at the beginning. its like a painting not a photo. that sunset outdid the sunrise but all of them are amazing and glorious.
ReplyDeleteStill Water Pond is stunning in that sunset... just a little jealous, thanks for sharing these.
I thought of YOU as I posted that "smeared" photo of the birds in flight. I'm glad you liked it. I knew you would. Your sunrises and sunsets are beautiful too! We both look at the same sun every day! Isn't that amazing? God bless you dear friend.
DeleteWhat a super image you created 'by accident' (lol)! My first thought was a flock of white doves taking flight. As ever, your images fill my heart. It reminds me of something an old friend once wrote, "Genesis, rewritten with every dawn."
ReplyDeleteWishing you and John a blessed day!
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the photos. I love that quote at the end especially! "Genesis, rewritten with every dawn." I am going to hang on to that one. I love the thought behind it!! Hope you and Tom also have a blessed day!
DeleteSuch a beautiful day on Stillwaters Pond. Love the first photo too. I'm amazed at the different birds on your pond. The Crane family obviously trusts the two of you very much. It saddens me that the colt will soon have to leave Mom and Dad. Do you think he/she will visit Mom and Dad?
ReplyDeleteIt's a gorgeous place that you live and get to see God's creation every day. I hope you have a wonderful day my friend.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
Thank you, Betsy. I don't know if the colt will visit "Mom and Dad" after he leaves the fold. I really don't know how that works...once he leaves, they will start another new family and we will only see them with the new colt(s) once they are born. They do take off for the day and go to other places, but I don't know if their former "children" are somewhere local where they can congregate. We never see them with more than their immediate current family. Hope you have a blessed day too.
DeleteBeautiful blessing and lovely photos. I love seeing the sky. Have a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteThank you!! I hope your day was lovely as well!
DeleteI did receive blessings from the pictures of Still Water Pond - I think ALL of them would get an award. Weren't there 2 kids from the Sand Hill Cranes? If you posted about losing one I missed it. :( Maybe my memory has failed me, that happens often these days. :) ☺♥
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mary. Yes, there were two colts when they started out, but after a couple of months one of them disappeared. I am thinking he could have been hit by a car, because they are notorious for walking very slowly across the road and their gray coloring blends in with the road and so often drivers don't see them until it is too late. I am assuming that is what happened, because he was already too big for a hawk or owl to get him by that time. It's sad, but that is nature. I understand that they rarely are able to keep both colts all the way to adulthood.
DeleteThank you for my special blessings this morning too. Your day was filled with beauty and special gifts with all the birds you watched.
ReplyDeleteYou suggested I look out my window for God's blessings today..I just did. We have a gusty wind blowing the leaves around. It almost looks like colorful snow falling (:0)
The tree in front is finally beginning to turn color and I say Thank you Lord.
I'm thankful for doing the mundane routine things with my Dave today too. Walmart, Costco and maybe stopping for a donut as it is our "Wednesdate" today.
So thankful for being one of your newer blog friends too.
Sue
I can well imagine the gusty wind blowing the colorful leaves around. Such a lovely fall scene...like a colorful "snow globe". Sounds like you had a busy day...that donut sounds good. Hubby wanted a danish or something like that today, but we never made it anywhere to find one. Maybe tomorrow. We did actually go out to lunch with our kids to help them celebrate their anniversary a few days late. And then they came over here this evening to play a game and we had rootbeer floats (Rose and I) and Benton had ice cream and oreos. John was good and didn't eat either one. LOL. So thankful to have you as a "newer blog friend."
DeleteI wonder if the young cranes ever come back and visit? Do the cranes recognize their relatives when they are all up there flying around? These are important questions! 😄
ReplyDeleteI wish I could answer your questions. I've often wondered that myself. We never see the adults with any other of their former "colts" once they start a new family. I am not sure where the colts go once they are adults and are forced out of the family fold. I guess they look for a mate and start their own family. I don't know if they ever have family reunions. I wish they would answer these questions. If I ever find out, I will be sure to let you know!
DeleteHow wonderful to have the cranes there. Beautiful sunsets. It's supposed to rain our way and bring colder weather. Sure hope. That would be nice. 😊
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sparky. It is getting cooler here too. It will be 64 in the morning, and the next day 57, and then 52. The afternoon temps are gradually going down too, into the mid 70's. So that is what I call nice fall weather for here. Bring it on!!
DeleteWhat a lovely blog, Pam, from sunrise to sunset. I really enjoyed it. Beautiful colors in the cloudy sky. And yes, you're right... it seems that friendships become more precious as we get older.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Aritha. I am so glad you came by for a visit all the way from your homeland! I appreciate your blog so much, and marvel at how much we both appreciate many of the same kinds of things. Thank you for sharing your world with us!!
DeleteHi Pamela. You do have many beautiful blessings there in your cozy home on Still Waters Pond. The pictures are wonderful! So glad you could chat with a wonderful friend of many years. Those friends who stick with us as the years go by are special indeed. I hope you are having a good week. See you again soon!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Deb. I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures! And yes, the older we get, the more we appreciate those special "old friends" who have been by us through thick and thin. It seems they are getting fewer and fewer as we get older, which is sad. I hope your week is blessed as well!
DeleteYour pictures are just beautiful. Nature will always give you something to look at. Will we have any fall temps this year or go straight to winter? That is what I am beginning to think. Maybe it will help me get through the winter better as I don't like cold...just a middle of the road temperatures.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping for some fall temps...it will be going down in the low 50's over the next few mornings, and the afternoons will be in the mid 70's. That's pretty nice to me! Hopefully it will stay that way for a while before the real cold sets in. It's nice to have some fall weather for a change!
DeleteLove all the pretty pictures, Pam! Love seeing those Sand Hill cranes and all the various activities around the Pond. I did like the first blurry picture, I like mysterious pictures like that, lOL. Makes you wonder what it is. Your sunrises and sunsets are so pretty. I'm ready for a bit cooler weather here, it's been pretty hot and muggy, so many "skeeters", I'll be glad when they are gone for the Season, LOL. Looking forward to Thanksgiving now, it won't be long. Time just rushes by......Hugs!
ReplyDeleteThank you Debbi. I'm so glad you stopped by for a visit! Our hot and muggy weather seems to be going away for a little while...it will be cooler in the mornings and lower temps in the afternoons too, so I will be happy to have that for a change. I hope it sticks around for a while! Get rid of those skeeters!! They are such pests! Yes, we are looking forward to Thanksgiving too. I know yours will be extra special this year...so many answered prayers! (((hugs))) and love to you and yours.
DeleteOh my goodness, Pam!! Such beauty right there in your back yard! I just love that the Sandhill Cranes are still feeling at home there. The colors in the sky are beyond lovely. God's pallet is amazing. Thanks for sharing your photos and scriptures that represent them so well. xo
ReplyDeleteThank you, Terri. Some days are much better than others! Yesterday just happened to be one of them! Today was a little more ordinary, but it has started cooling down a bit, and I'll take that any time!! Hope things are getting finished at your house! I know you are getting anxious to get your house back in order! (((hugs)))
DeleteHi Pamela, I always enjoy the beautiful picture you post of Still Waters Pond. I think it is great how the Cranes some right into your yard. I like your Psalm 8 too! Nice that you could catch up with your friend!
ReplyDeleteThose sunrise and sunset pictures are beautiful. especially with the trees silhouetted against them. And I also enjoy Still Waters Pond and the wildlife there.
ReplyDeleteYou asked about Christmas cake. Yes it is a fruit cake, I use 2 lb fruit and half pound butter along with sugar spices etc. Mine is a boiled cake and I use condensed milk in place of eggs. An 8inch square tin to bake it in (except when I'm trying to make mini cakes). Iced with almond icing and then plain icing and people often decorate them with a Christmas theme.
Have a good week.
