Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!
What Do You See Outside YOUR Open Window Today?
Remember: "When God closes a door, He always opens a window!" You never know what might be out there waiting for you!

A Beautiful Saturday Afternoon in November
It was such a beautiful November afternoon, with a high of 75 and no real humidity or clouds, and so I wanted to go outside and sit in my "secret garden" on the swing. However when I stepped outside I saw that I had visitors in the yard:
Earlier I had cleaned out that bird feeder and put fresh bird seed in, and quite a bit was spilled on the ground in the process...and guess who discovered it? Yep, the Sand Hill Crane family must have a eagle eye or sixth sense when it comes to free birdseed on the ground!
And so, since they were so busily chomping on the seeds, they hardly even noticed me up on the porch above them.
However, when I came down on the ground and started to head that direction. the Daddy Crane stood guard and I wasn't quite brave enough to try and go around him to get to my swing...
I mean, they probably would have moved away, but I didn't want to disturb their feast either...
So I changed my plans and went the opposite direction, over to my little path in the woods down to Still Waters Pond.
This is my little "secret hiding place" when I want to see what birds are in the water on that end of the pond. That is where I would watch the Canada Geese nesting on the island last winter. I wonder if they will come back again? We haven't seen much of them lately.
It's also where I can see the back side of the new house next door
It's still available and waiting for new owners...so I still ask, "won't you be my neighbor?"
This would be part of your view if you lived there...
That's the goose island where they built their nest...
It's a very lovely, peaceful little cove...
I found some more holly trees blooming...
There are lots of holly berries in these woods and even over on the island...great natural food for the birds when they migrate through...
Back on the porch I noticed that my Christmas Cactus is starting to get buds! Yay! I can't wait to see it bloom again!
On another note, the other day I was putting away this 2022 John Sloane Country Seasons Calendar. I had it out because I was using another picture from it for Lily Grace's "school days" pictures that I took a couple of months ago. (You can read that post HERE if you missed it!)
I turned to the November calendar for that year, and this was the picture:
You see, it reminded me of when I was a little girl on the farm, and my mother and I used to take a walk on our "lane" down to the mailbox every day to get the mail. Our dog Laddie would walk with us. Here is a picture of our family on the farm, and Laddie is there in the middle. The "lane" we walked is behind us. I am the "baby" in the family. I was never that big (as in the picture above) when we lived on the farm, as we left when I was 5 going on 6. But my memories are very special about that daily walk with my mother and our dog.
And I wished I could go back there and walk with her again like we did when I was a child, but my mother has been in heaven for 18 years, my daddy for 13 years, my oldest brother Russell since 2019. Only my sister Doris and my brother Clifford and I are still living.
So I did the next best thing I could do here today...I "re-created" our walk with my little friend Lily Grace and her dog Bailey, and another doll that could stand in for my mother. Actually, I just realized that this doll's name is "Dorothy", and my mother's name is Dorothea. This particular doll is a part of my "Martin Sisters" family, which includes my husband's mother Vivian, and her three sisters, Nellie, Dorothy, and Daisy.
How'd we do? I didn't have hats, and I forgot about an apron, but you get the picture!
They are enjoying their walk on this beautiful Autumn/November day!
Oh hello!
That was fun. I hope you enjoyed it too.
Last night our real "kids" came over and brought us a real treat! Homemade Pizza! Rose made the pizza dough in my bread maker machine that I let her "borrow" for a while...I may just give it to her since she keeps making such good stuff in it and then shares it with us! LOL.
She brought all of the toppings and we each made our own pizzas with what we like on it.
They like an alfredo/garlic sauce on their pizza...
And we like a marinara sauce on ours...
They both turned out delicious!! And it was so much fun to do this together!
And then we celebrated their 7th anniversary, which was on November 11th. We are so thankful to have this precious couple living near us. They are such a joy and blessing to us!
After supper we went out to see the beautiful full moon! And then we played a game of dominoes (instead of having "Dominos" Pizza! LOL) and later had some delicious peach dump cake that I made. (You can click on that link for the recipe from when I made it once before). I noticed that I didn't mention the cinnamon on top in that recipe. I did sprinkle cinnamon on the top before baking, and it added a nice flavor.
The view of the moon from our front porch.
Today we received a huge "care package" from our Medicare Advantage Plan OTC allowance. I didn't realize that we each had a rather large amount of money that we could have been spending on OTC products throughout the year, and it needed to be used up before December. So I got busy and ordered for both of us all kinds of goodies, like bandaids, rubber gloves, all kinds of OTC medicines, a new bathroom scale for hubby, and a lumbar pillow for me to use at my desk (comfy, using it now). And I also ordered these arthritis compression gloves for me. I have been suffering with a trigger finger, and I heard these might help. So I am trying them, but I can't type very well with them, so I took them back off. I will sleep in them tonight, because that is when the trigger finger gets "stuck in place". We shall see if it helps.
While I was sitting here typing this, I looked out the window and noticed that the skies were turning purple. So I hurried out to see if I could get any good pictures of the sunset before it dropped down below the trees too far.
This is what I got, and it's pretty beautiful! I've heard of "Red skies at night, sailor's delight, and red skies at morning, sailors take warning", but what about purple skies? What does that mean?
Purple skies at night, sailors take flight? LOL. I don't know, but I think they were beautiful, and I'm so glad I saw them in time to share with you.
To close out our day with some positive thoughts from God's Word, I came upon these familiar and beloved verses:
Isaiah 54:10
Though the mountains be shaken
and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken
nor my covenant of peace be removed,”
says the Lord, who has compassion on you.
Psalm 84:5-7 NIV
"5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
6 As they pass through the Valley of Baka,
they make it a place of springs;
the autumn rains also cover it with pools.
7 They go from strength to strength,
till each appears before God in Zion."
Our choir sang a song last Sunday entitled "God's Covenant of Peace", based on those verses.
You can listen to it in the video above. This was recorded at our rehearsal, which may sound a little bit "shaky", but I know the Lord was with us as we sang it on Sunday morning, and it was truly a blessing. I hope you will enjoy it as well.
Have a blessed and peaceful evening and Happy SONday tomorrow!
I would love to be your neighbor, but you know, that is just a too far of a drive to work, LOL. It's enough that it already takes me 45-60 min from south Ocala to north Ocala, lol. Happy Anniversary to Benton and Rose!!! smiles
You might be surprised how close you would be to where you work from here. There are back roads that go that direction. And NO Traffic between here and there! Scott used to drive to Belleview every day from here and it took him one hour. But from here to the prison is a different road and I doubt it would be more than 45 minutes. I'm serious. And no traffic! It's a 4 br house with a family room...in case you have to bring down your MIL, it's a split BR plan...just saying...and there's a Dollar General in walking distance! How great is that??? LOL. The hospital is in Palatka, 20 minutes away, and Gainesville is 45 minutes away. Just saying...
I'm guessing it was a wise decision to bypass the Sandhill crane family. Daddy might not take kindly to a human too near his family. Although they may realize that it's you that gives them the seen and he was just as interested in you as you are in them. Who knows? Oh, how I would love to be your neighbor. The fun we would have together! I enjoyed the reenactment of your walk with your mom and dog with Lillie Grace and family. You did great, down to the baskets they were carrying. That pizza!!!! Oh my gosh it looks good. I would love to have a piece of either one. We're cutting down on carbs because Dennis was diagnosed with diabetes this week. Yikes! Every. Single. Person in his family has it. His Mom a tiny little thing and she has it too. He's been pre-diabetic for over 15 years and we've kept it controlled by diet, but obviously not strict enough. We got pretty lax since we moved here so we're back to the old way. He still wants to avoid medications and his doctor is willing to give him a couple of months to try to get it back down but his fasting and A1C numbers were both pretty high. I need to lose a LOT of pounds so I'm trying to do this with him for encouragment so no pizza for us. Boo-hoo. :-) Thank you for the scripture as it's very encouraging in these days isn't it/ Take care my friend. Blessings and hugs, Betsy
Those sandhill cranes are so cool! I loved your story about walking the lane with your mom. I too wish I could take a walk like that with my mom or just sit and talk to my dad one more time.
Nice. It's in the 40's up our way. The Gold Finches have arrived. I like it when they're here. It's lovely cool, sunny, low humidity. Yummy temps. Helps one feel festive. I like the glove. Hope it brings you comfort. We might have homemade keto pizza tonight. It's good weather for it. Blessings. 😊
On our morning walk yesterday I saw a family of 5 cranes just like your three flying over our heads and turned to watch them soar off towards the beaches and though of your beautiful family. these are amazing photos of them. I would have not walked to the swing either. I just read the story of the swing and your strong son, and how you got it on Lily's blog. I want another swing but the list of needs comes first. and grass and a fence first. our first swing, now no longer usable was a Chrismtas gift from my big strong son, Daniel. I would love to live in that house or any of the houses in your little piece of paradise. Lily and Dorothy are beautiful and so are the memories they stir up from the calendar. I love that red dress and the collar is awesome. I have had 2 blogs since 2009, but Fourpawsetc is the dog blog and written from their point of view and the past year has been more than I can handle to do 2 blogs. I am hoping to get back to it. right now I just post 1 or 2 times a week to keep it active.
Aw, I love that the Sand Hill family's adopted you as their own! That walk down (memory) lane evokes such feels. While I never did that, it reminds me of a sweeter, gentler time. I'm so glad you paused to recreate that with Lily Grace. Great idea about creating your own pizzas; I may do that next time Tom orders out and use low-carb tortillas instead of the regular pizza dough. Have a most blessed SONday!
PS - Almost forgot! Tom used to suffer from trigger finger, then a few years ago the VA gave him an injection of something(?) in the wrist that, aside from occasional flare-ups, made it go away.
Hi Pamela. I love the picture of the Sand Hill Crane family that lives by Still Waters Pond. Your pizza looks delicious. So glad you could share it with your son and daughter-in-law. Happy anniversary to them! It's wonderful that you have good memories of your early days on the family with your family. Finding that you have some extra money to spend on medical necessities is a win-win, so its good that you were able to get what you need. Have a great week. See you again soon!
Lovely photos, as always, and I love the way you recreated the photo with Lily Grace, Dorothy, and the dog!! Very cute. I had trigger thumb surgery (left hand) quite a few years ago and thought I was headed that way again with my right hand but the hand doctor just put a shot of steroids into it and it is good as new - and no surgery!! Perhaps all you need it a little jab!! Love & hugs!
I'm happy to hear you were able to get so many essential health items for free as this year is drawing to a close. What a perk! The pizzas look amazing - I would love a slice of each, please - LOL - and Rose and Benton are such wonderful "kids," for sure. Of course, we see now who is really in charge of Still Waters Pond: Mr. Sand Hill Crane! And yes, you imitated that calendar photo with perfection. Blessings always, Pamela!
Pam, I loved your choir song of the Covenant of Peace. Beautiful and such a promise. I also love the way your tiny choir sings to the Glory of God. Your calendar picture and your family photo and your recreation of it is too precious. I can see how your soul was and is touched by it. Thanks so much for sharing. Love the Crane family and your secret place for meditation. Its the perfect setting for a book. Sue
I enjoyed seeing your version of that calendar picture. Your pizzas look so inviting. I know they were delicious. Peace and blessings to you and yours.
Thank you for visiting here today. I would love for you to sign my guestbook and let me know you stopped by. I always enjoy reading your comments and words of encouragement! May you be blessed as you go on your way. Please come back and visit again soon.
The pizza looks so good! Your kids look so happy too. 😊

ReplyDeleteLet me know if those gloves work. I have trigger finger, too.
I'm glad you could enjoy watching the crane family.
