Saturday Randomness

Happy Saturday! Nothing particularly special about today, except that it started out around 39 degrees this morning, with a beautiful bright sun shining through the American Flag as we put it out for the day.

I love how the sunshine makes our flag glow so beautifully!!  Made me feel like singing the Star Spangled Banner, but I will spare you that...just imagine it in your own mind and sing along! Be sure to stand and place your hand over your heart when you do!  We are very thankful and proud that our flag is still standing!! Amen?

Yesterday afternoon I picked this tiny little bouquet of wildflowers from our back yard. Actually, we can thank Sandra, A.K.A. "MadSnapper", from her Friday post HERE, where she showed some of these little red flowers from her yard and said they were named Emilia, or Red Tassel Flower. I knew I had to run right outside and see if I could find any in my yard, as I knew they had been there before. And sure enough, there were many of them out there blooming, along with these other little wildflowers, so of course I had to bring a little bouquet inside to enjoy in my kitchen.  Thank you, Sandra, for sharing them with us. I love these!!

And then, once again, we can thank Sandra at MadSnapper for inspiring this random picture. In her Thursday post HERE, she shared a "Make Do Tip" for a jar or bottle opener made from some rubber shelf liner that she bought at the dollar store. That was a very clever idea, and it reminded me of this thing that I have in my utensil drawer. Does anyone know what it is?

Yes it is a jar and bottle opener, and I've had it for years. I thought I originally got it from the Fuller Brush Company or Stanley Home Products. I used to sell for both of those companies many years ago.  But I don't see it listed in their products, so now I'm not sure where I got it, but it does do the job. We always called it a "husband beater", because it could even beat a husband's grip when necessary! However, even this is getting difficult for me in my "old age", and I like Sandra's Made Do Tip of using the rubber gripper stuff that she got from the dollar store even more.  Thank you again, Sandra, for giving me lots of interesting ideas!  If you don't already know Sandra, you might want to get acquainted with her. She's a very special lady!! And she's also from Florida!!

Okay, more randomness...Where do you think these came from?  If you guessed popsicles in my freezer, you'd be right.  I had two of these strawberry popsicles left in my freezer, but they were old and kind of frostbitten, and I needed to make room for the FREE turkey I got at our grocery store for buying $100.00 worth of groceries yesterday! That's right! A FREE 12 lb. turkey!  Anyway, I am not planning to use it right now as our DIL has a 20 lb. turkey that she is thawing out from HER freezer that we need to use, so I had to move things around in my freezer to make room for the turkey,  and these popsicles were in the way. So they melted in the sink and I preserved the sticks so I could share them with you. I knew you'd want to see these little riddles. Perhaps you can share them with your family around the Thanksgiving table.  Well, maybe NOT the one about vampires...that's not exactly proper table talk. LOL.

Since today was such a nice cool day, it was a good day for doing a little bit of baking. I had a couple of overripe bananas sitting on the counter that needed to be used, and so of course they became Banana Nut Bread.  HERE is a link to an OLD post where you can find my recipe.  The banana nut bread baking sure smelled better than those overripe bananas!  I've gotten to a point in life where I simply can NOT tolerate the smell or taste of overripe bananas. By overripe I mean any banana that no longer has any shade of green still on the peeling! LOL.

Back to pleasant smells in the kitchen...I do love the smell of fried onions and squash cooking. Here they are cooking in my husband's grandmother's very old iron skillet! That skillet has to be at least 100 years old, and it still cooks everything just fine!  Can you even begin to imagine the good food that has been cooked in that skillet over the past 100 years?  I believe it probably started out being used on a wood cookstove in Nanny Martin's kitchen, and then gradually she got a gas stove.  Eventually when I got it  I had an electric stove, but now I also have a gas stove, and I believe the skillet is happier here on this stove. It is also great to use for baking cornbread in the oven, among other things...

And speaking of Nanny Martin, I just found this OLD post where I talked about these same two items! And I gave you more of the history in that post.  Below is her lovely old platter, and I had it out tonight because I was cooking a pork loin roast in the oven (after I took out the banana nut bread), and the platter was waiting to hold the roast when it came out of the oven.  I love using these old family "heirlooms".  They make me feel connected to them in a very special way. Especially as we come to Thanksgiving, and I think about all of our family members who have gone on before us who we used to celebrate Thanksgiving with...times have changed. The faces around the table have changed, but there are still these things that bring back memories and reconnect us to those who meant so much to us in our lives.   Cherish your loved ones while you have them near. Don't let anything come between you to keep you from enjoying one another's presence while you can. Life is short, and someday all we have left are old pots and pans and dishes, but hopefully lots of good memories.

Oh, another random picture as I was sitting here at my computer this afternoon and looking out the window from  my "room with a view". This was the view:

I love how that geranium is blooming, and the afternoon sun is making it glow!  The Christmas cactus is also starting to get more buds on it, so hopefully it will be blooming by Christmas if not sooner.

While I was waiting for the pork roast to roast, I took a little walk outside for a few minutes just to get some fresh air and enjoy the beauty of this lovely cool afternoon.  I walked over to my little "hiding place", where I can see the cove of Still Waters Pond. And guess who was there?

Yep, the Canada Goose couple was resting there in the afternoon sun...can you see them?

This is a little blurry, but can you see the goose hiding behind the bushes in the water?

There's the other one, sitting out in the water a little further:

I couldn't get the focus on this one because of the weeds in the foreground...but I didn't want to blow my cover either and scare them away...

I am excited to see them over in that area, as that is the same area where perhaps this same couple built their nest last year. Time will tell. It may be too early for nesting just yet, but the fact that they are hanging around there tells me that they may be staking out their territory before any others come to claim it.  I hope so! It always makes things so exciting around here!

Oh, last night when it started getting so chilly, I decided it was time for my first official cup of hot Ovaltine for the season.  Yes, I said Ovaltine...
This is what I use, and I highly recommend it. I can tolerate this much better than pure hot chocolate, and this actually has vitamins and minerals in it so it is good for you! It's lower in sugar too than regular hot chocolate.  It can be drunk hot or cold, but I much prefer hot. And I find that it relaxes me before I go to bed at night. It doesn't hype me up like real chocolate would do, and it actually acts more like a warm cup of milk before bedtime...very soothing and comforting.  At least that's how I feel about it!

This was the devotional reading from this little calendar from the other day. I liked what it said, and wanted to share it with you.
That "heavenly fire" comes from God's Holy Spirit, and when we are faced with struggles or adversity, or if someone is attacking or hurting our children or other members of our family or our friends,  the Holy Spirit kindles up that "heavenly fire" and gives us the spark and energy to face our enemies and be strong in the Armor of Christ (Ephesians 6:10-17)  I am very thankful for this strength that comes only from God when needed most.  And yes,
"Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord."
Psalm 144:15
Nothing random about that.  God's love and strength and blessings toward us, His children, is very intentional.  And I am very thankful for that special blessing.

Happy Thanksgiving week! I do hope you will have a blessed and wonderful and happy time with family and/or friends...or even just you and the Lord...a special day of thankfulness!
Amen.

  1. We also use Ovaltine, and it makes great malted chocolate shakes, smiles. Wishing you a beautiful evening, my friend.

    1. Oh yes, and I even like to sprinkle it on top of a dish of vanilla ice cream! Hope you have a lovely day tomorrow! Did your heat get fixed yet?

  2. Hi Pam. I haven't thought of Ovaltine in years. Hubs loves a cup of hot chocolate but all the mixes are so high in sugar and he complains of them being too sweet. We are both diabetics so I will check your suggestion out soon. I'm taking a break from FB and considering whether I will return or not. At least I can still keep up with you and your family via your blog. Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and blessing to ya'll. ~~ Carol Talbot Smith

    1. Thank you for commenting and also letting me know it was you! I am sorry you are leaving FB, but I do understand. I toy with it, but it's the best way for me to stay in touch with extended family. I do hope you will pop in here when you can. Have a blessed and beautiful Thanksgiving!!

  3. Your photo of the flag in the sun is stunning and moving. Yes, I'm thankful it's still waving over our country!
I have some ovaltine in the cupboard. I rarely use it, but now will have to try it hot. I've never even thought of doing that.
I have a jar opener too, looks different than yours but it works!
Looks like you had a very nice and productive day. Now I'm off to see what Sandra had to say about jar openers.

    1. Amen to the Flag still waving!! Oh, drinking Ovaltine HOT is the BEST way to drink it. I also sometimes sprinkle it dry onto vanilla ice cream, but I prefer to drink it hot. Sandra is always full of interesting thoughts and ideas!!

  4. Hello Pamela, you have shared a lot of beautiful photos today. I especially love the wild flowers and the view from your patio to the pond. Just beautiful. I couldn't believe it when you posted the temperature where you live. That sounds quite cold for your in Florida. I'm glad you are enjoying the cooler temperatures and you are smart to take advantage of the time for baking. I couldn't agree more with you when you say how the smell of overripe bananas is such a turn off. I well remember when I was a child how the overripe bananas were my favourite for eating. Now I won't even use them for baking if they are too ripe. I make sure to put ripe ones in the freezer before they start smelling 'gassy'.

    1. "smelling gassy". LOL. I hadn't thought of it that way, but they sure do "stink". LOL.

  5. I forgot to ask if you know of another tip for opening hard to open jars. I hold the far well in one hand and use the palm of my other hand to hit the bottom. This dislodges the vacuum and you should hear a pop and then it will be easier to open. I also use the hand of a heavy knife or other implement and gently knock against the jar cover in a sideways motion. Just two or three taps maximum and the jar opens like a charm.

    1. Thank you, Penny. I've tried the knife and knocking ideas before, but I have really lost a lot of strength in my hands and arms over the past few years due to issues with my shoulders and arms, etc., and also arthritis. I find that I am not strong enough to do those things very well, and I am afraid of breaking the jar also by doing the tapping/knocking thing. It's one of those things that is frustrating about getting "old". :)

  6. I haven't seen Ovaltine since I was a kid. I loved that stuff! Now that I know you can still buy it I'm going to put it on by grocery list. Fuller Brush is another blast from the past. What an interesting post.

    1. Thank you, Connie. Sometimes you have to look for the Ovaltine. Not every store carries it. And Fuller Brush does still exist online. They just don't do the door to door sales anymore. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  7. How I would love to have a gas stove again. We can't put one here so when our stove recently went kaput, we had to buy another electric. I've cooked on gas for the last 30+ years and found it hard to adjust when we moved back here to Omaha. All our places here have had electric. Love that skillet. The stories it could tell you if only it could talk. I don't remember ever having Ovaltine. I love hot chocolate so I'll have to look for it.
Amen to the flag and to all who have sacrificed to have her still flying. Thank you for the reminder again.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

    1. This is my first gas stove ever. I was afraid of it at first, but now that I am used to it I do like it a lot. Although this one isn't fancy...no timer, light in the oven, etc., just bare bones stuff. But I have adapted and I am happy I have it. Plus, if the power goes off, I can still cook on the top burners, just not the oven. So that is a plus! I hope you will try the Ovaltine. I can't drink regular chocolate, as it upsets my tummy and is too sweet for me. But this is just right. Of course you do have to add it to milk...it's not like an instant hot chocolate that you just add water. It's the only way I can drink milk! Hope you are having a blessed Sunday, and I hope your Thanksgiving will be extra wonderful!

  8. My grandma gave me a cast iron skillet for a wedding gift along with pots and pans. I still have the skillet and passed on the cookware to my daughter. I haven't had Ovaltine in ages. I just bought some dark chocolate chips for baking, and I like to add it to yogurt too. Have a Happy Sunday!

    1. Cast Iron skillets are very special and should last a life time! The only complaint I have is how heavy it is, but still it cooks things so well I do enjoy using it. I hope you are having a Happy Sunday too!

  9. A lovely blog, Pamela, thank you so much. It’s really becoming quite special: we did the same thing, we both baked a banana bread on the same day. Isn't that special? I really enjoy your blog and wish I could write better English (expand my vocabulary) to tell you that. The kind of hot chocolate you have, I don’t know it. And what lovely photos of ordinary things and nature, the pond, the waterfowl. Have a blessed Sunday.

    Lots of Love: Aritha

    1. Your comments are always so special, and your English vocabulary is perfect! Plus I can figure out a way to translate it if I need to. Just please keep writing. I always love to hear from you and I truly enjoy reading your posts. We do many things very similar and it seems that we do them often around the same time. I sometimes wonder if we are related and don't know it! One of those long lost 4th or 5th or 6th cousins that I've discovered on Ancestry.com that I will never really know, but I seem to have lots of them all around the world! That would be so interesting if it turned out that we were distantly related! Happy thought! But we are sisters in Christ, and that's good enough!! I hope your Sunday has been blessed as well.

  10. thanks for the shout out, I had two of your friends stop by and leave a comment. bananas were my favorite food and green to black I love them. IBS will not allow them or nut bread or Ovaltine or hot chocolate, dairy is a no... I used to have swiss miss after dinner every night, I still can not find anything to replace it.
I am so jealous at all your red tassel flowers. I am going to buy a package of seeds and sew them on my stump hill. the 2 I transplanted are growing quickly and yesterday I found a purple tassel flower and transplanted it. I LOVE wild flowers.

    1. Come up here and visit and you can dig up as many little red tassel flowers as we can find. They seem to keep popping up in all kinds of places in our yard. I love them too, plus also the little wild Portulaca Purslane flowers. The ones I put in the flower pot are dying out. I need to probably let them go back to the wild so they can survive. Oh, I hope the two of my friends who visited will be good friends to you> I do have some of the best blogging friends ever...you included. (((hugs)))

  11. How warm and welcoming your posts make me feel! (Just wish we had 'scratch-and-sniff' technology.) Sadly, I no longer have any of mother's Revere Ware pans -- yet her baking accessories always fill my heart ... memories overflowing. You're so right about cherishing our loved ones while we have the chance. Sadly, there still exists some unexplained animosity with a certain family member, but I'm determined not to let her diminish what love remains. Wishing you and John and "the kids" a blessed SONday!

I know they have to be older than I am, and they are still great pans! Oh, I am sorry about the "unexplained animosity with a certain family member". Praying for that relationship to be healed in God's time. (((hugs)))

  14. What a delightful post again Pam. I love all the twists and turns you write about.
Your wildflower bouquet is adorable. I would love to have some of those red tassel flowers in our yard. I wonder if they grow in our area of CA. I wil have to look them up.
Umm, banana bread is my favorite. Now you are making me hungry. All I need is some over ripe bananas..actually, all I need is bananas !!! I see a trip to the store in my future...
I haven't thought about Ovaltine in ages. Think I will add that to my shopping list.
The photo of the early morning sunrise behind the flag is gorgeous. We had to take our flag down since we have had lots of days of rain. It will go back up when the weather cooperates.
Hope your Sonday is blessed. We stayed home to fully recover from the gastly flu bug we had. Sunday just doesn't feel like Sunday when we miss church.

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed the post. Sometimes the most "random" posts are the best! Just a day in the life... I am glad you are feeling better, but understand the need to stay home from church until you feel 100%. You sure don't want to pass it on to others, plus it's just hard to be comfortable when you still don't feel 100% better. God understands, but I know how you feel about missing church. It's the highlight of our week!!

    1. Thank you, Martha. I do hope the geese will hang around and build another nest, and hopefully this time they will have better results. Not sure what happened last year, but both eggs did not hatch. So maybe this year will be their year for a successful birth! I hope you and yours will also have a wonderful Thanksgiving. We will be a small group here, just our immediate family. I've invited one couple from church, but she is one who is going through some cancer treatments still and is not sure yet how she will feel on Thursday, so I told her to come if they feel like it, but not to worry if she isn't up to it. I just wanted her to know that we love them and want them to be somewhere if they are up to it. We shall see what happens. God knows best.
