Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!

Back "Porch" Living!
Remember I told you HERE last week that our handyman "Billy" was working on a major project on our back deck...Well, work he has done all week/weekend long, and today I think the "project" is finally finished!
This is a "before picture" of our deck, before anything was done. We had this deck built last summer before we moved into our house so we would have a back entrance into the house and also have a place to sit and watch the activities on "Still Waters Pond".
And we certainly have enjoyed it. You've seen many pictures throughout the year of the geese, herons, sunsets, etc. But what you haven't probably noticed is that the afternoon sun gets extremely bright on our back deck, as it faces west. And the backside of our house gets extremely hot from the hot sun beating down on it all afternoon, with no shade to break the sun's rays. We end up having to close our blinds for most of the afternoon, which spoils the whole purpose for living on the pond in the first place.
Our electric bill this summer was much higher than we anticipated, and we think it is because of the constant radiant heat bearing down on the house, causing the air conditioning to run constantly. Yes, we do live in Florida, so that is par for the course. But enough is enough!
And so, when we met "Billy" the handyman and he said that he could build us a roof over our deck, we decided to take him up on it, and this would be an "Anniversary Gift" to each other and to our house, since we just had our 51st wedding anniversary and we also celebrated our one year anniversary of living here in this house!
Here is Billy and one of his sons, who came to help "Pops" do the job.
They worked diligently in the blistering sun all weekend long to get this job done.
It was exciting to see the difference it made already as each panel of the metal roof was added. I was sitting inside in my little den looking out the window and could feel the difference right away...
We did leave one section open at this end so that we can use our BBQ grill on the deck and not have to worry about burning the roof down!
And now I can stand under the shade and look out at the pond!
And this is looking out from our living room through the glass doors, which now we don't have to cover in the middle of the day! There may be times when the glare is too bright off the pond and we may still have to close the blinds for a little while, but we can tell a difference in the heat against the windows and the wall already!! Hooray!! Mission Accomplished!
I will post more pictures when we finish setting up our deck , I mean porch furniture and adding some homey, comfy touches. (I think by adding the roof we can now call it a "porch" instead of a deck, right? I like the sound of a "porch" so much better.) We are debating also about painting or staining, but that will come later on. In the meantime, we are just rejoicing in having this wonderful shady spot...and can't wait for fall so we can really enjoy it! (the heat and humidity are still a bit too high to spend too much time out there right now, but fall is coming!)
Thinking about the sun and the shade reminds me of these verses from Psalm 121
5. "The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6. The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
8. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in
from this time forth, and even forevermore."
Good Night my friends!
Sweet Dreams!

I love your porch!! It's so nice, I see a lot of porch-sitting in your future!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mary! Yes, I want to sit out there all the time, but it is still a bit too hot/humid to stay for long. Fall is coming, and that lasts a LONG time here in Florida! I pray that storm is not headed your way this week. Stay safe!
DeleteYou will get so much enjoyment from your new back porch!! You can actually see that it is cooler just from the photos you shared! Nice anniversary gift!!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, I know we will enjoy it so much more than the way it was. Now maybe we can actually eat out there when the weather cools down a bit. Yes, I like these kinds of anniversary gifts...much better than cut roses that die in a few days! This gift will keep on giving!
DeleteI guessed it. I was almost certain it would be a roof over the deck! Looks great and now you can enjoy it a lot more through the seasons. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, you guessed it! It is something we have wanted to do ever since we moved in but had to many other priorities first. We struggled with umbrellas every day, trying to add some shade, but had to take them down every time the wind blew or they would go over the railing! So this is a gift that will keep on giving year after year!
DeleteThat should make a huge difference. That western sun is brutal. I am sure it will help tremendously plus it will be fun to sit out there now and observe the goings on in nature.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sandy. Yes, as a fellow Floridian you understand about that western sun! I think this porch roof will pay for itself in saved electric bills in no time! And we will enjoy the benefits thereof for a long time. Have a safe and blessed week...praying those storms stay away from our shores.
DeleteOh wow! I am so happy for you. You will love that porch. I can imagine sitting there when it rains and hearing the rain, but being protected. I love it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have already sat out there in the rain to listen to the rain on the tin roof. My favorite thing to do when it rains! We are very happy and thankful already for this blessing. Thank you!
DeleteWhat an awesome view and now the perfect deck to enjoy. Have fun decorating it. I wish I lived in the country.
ReplyDeleteThank you Susan. Yes, we will definitely enjoy the view more now that we don't have to stand or sit in the hot sun. Yes, we are very thankful to live in the country. I wish you could too! Have a blessed and beautiful week.
DeleteI think the roof over the veranda was an excellent idea. Now once you furnish to your liking you will really enjoying sitting outside and enjoying the pond. I hope it helps with the air con bill too. I think it will.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Penny! I like your term "veranda" also. Has an elegant Victorian sound to it! Yes, we are very happy about this new addition and trusting it will definitely pay for itself in reducing our air conditioning bills. Every little bit helps!
Deletereally looks nice, you will get a lot of enjoyment from the new shade and save on cooling bills.
ReplyDeleteThank you, "Unknown". I would love to know who you are! Thank you for visiting and appreciating the new porch with me! Have a blessed day!
DeletePerfect! We had the exact same problem at our house, back porch facing directly to the west. We added a screened porch. It made a huge difference, only have to close the blinds for maybe an hour late in the day now and definitely helped with the electric bills. It looks like they did an excellent job on yours - enjoy! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Martha! Yes, that western sun can be brutal here in the sunny south. We discussed screening our "porch", but we probably won't because I like to lean over and look up at the treetops. That's the only downside to the roof over top...I can't see as much of the trees and skies as I am used to seeing...but I will adjust. It's a good trade-off! Have a blessed day.
DeleteHow wonderful! You'll be able to use it year round now. I know a lot of people use fans on their porches and in the courtyards. It helps to keep that air moving! I'm so happy for you both. Enjoy your day...another hot one! Hugs! Oh and I promise not to eat any red seeds on the trail! heehee! Don't worry...I don't even touch anything when I'm out in nature. Take care!
ReplyDeleteHa Ha...I know you are well aware of the "dangers" of eating things on the trail, and as long as you don't have any little children around, they are pretty to look at and appreciate the beauty, even if they are poisonous! The flowers in the spring are so pretty!! And don't eat any unripe wild persimmons either! LOL.
DeleteHurray for the covered porch! Hey, our electric bill is higher too, thanks to the never ending summer (we have window ac's). It sure seems this summer has been the longest. Usually we only have 2-4 weeks of humidity -not this time-since late April. ANYWAYS, another great post, my friend. Have a beautiful day.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think the extra long hot summer is kind of a double whammy for people who are trapped inside. We are really looking forward to fall and winter here...we will have at least 6 -7 months of perfect porch weather. (If it doesn't get too cold! But that is what jackets are for, right?). Hope you have a beautiful day too!!
DeleteWhat a fantastic and practical addition to your home, Pamela! Now you can really enjoy your view of the pond, even when it's raining. I would love a roof over our deck, but don't think that will happen any time soon.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Thank you, Martha. We probably would have waited a while to do this, but God sent "Billy" to us, and it just seemed the perfect timing. Especially when we got our electric bill and realized how bad it really was! So we figure this roof will pay for itself over time in money saved on electricity...hey! and we are helping the planet! So it is a win-win! :)
DeleteGood for y'all! It looks super and what a joy it will be and bring!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Linda
Thank you, Linda. We are already appreciating the shadier afternoons even if it is still too hot to go outside and really enjoy it. That will come in due time. We are very thankful.
DeleteI love your porch and the ceiling fans! I would want to sit out there all the time. Looking forward to all the photographs you will be taking from there.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cathy. Yes, the ceiling fans were a must! We really didn't care so much if we had the lights, but we definitely wanted the fans. They do make a big difference. Yes, when it starts to cool down a little more I will be spending a lot more time out there. We are very thankful.
DeleteSuch a difference ... yay Billy! I suspect (that) in time, it may become your new favorite spot!
ReplyDeleteYes, I say "yay Billy!" too! He sure worked hard on this and did a great job. And yes, when it cools down some we will be spending a lot of time on the porch. Thank you!
DeleteWow! Your PORCH is beautiful! I'm so glad you were able to get this done! "I love what you've done with the place!"
ReplyDeleteThank you Barbara. We are really happy we were able to get this done. It is already a big improvement. We are very thankful!
DeleteOh I love your back porch! You will enjoy it so very much. I can see you now girl sitting on the porch, spending time with the Lord and your man and enjoying the beauty around you. How very blessed you are. So happy for you. Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cindy! Yes, I plan to do all of the above, just as soon as it cools down a bit. As you know, right now we are having some hot, humid days and not even a ceiling fan helps much out there. But fall is on its way and then we will have a nice long fall/winter to enjoy it. And yes, I do expect to spend time with the Lord there as well as "my man". We are very thankful and blessed.
DeleteYou're porch looks amazing as it is! I'm certain it's a blessing to you and may help on your electric bill! My only suggestion is to make sure the wood is treated to handle precipitation. Wood can behave (or should I say misbehave?) in some not so pleasant ways.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy!
Love and blessings!
Thank you Kim. Yes, the wood is all pressure treated, but we will definitely put a preservative on it of some kind in a little while. You have to wait for the wood to "dry out" before you can put anything on it. We just have to decide if we want to paint it or stain it. We will do that when the weather is a bit cooler. Too hot to think about that now. Hope you are doing well. I take it that Derecho did not affect you where you are? Sounds like it was really bad for so many. Praying for those in recovery mode now.
DeleteWOW!!--when y'all say you "live on the water" y'all weren't KIDDING!! ha ha LOL! I didn't realize your home was that close to the water. What a pretty view. But tell me about the "skeeters" AKA "air Jaws", ha ha. Do y'all have alot of those being right next to the water or not? I think y'all did the MOST PERFECT THING to celebrate your one year there plus the anniversary present to yourownselves plus your house......first getting the porch and now getting it covered. Oh my goodness I love it, it's so big and pretty. I can just see hanging ferns and hanging pots of some kind of red or pink flowers hanging up there, maybe? I know y'all are going to enjoy this new area so much, if not right now....then soon as Fall arrives, and winter too. We "porch sit" year round, even winter nights but of course here in Charleston and where y'all are in Florida---winter is mild so there is not much bundling up needed, LOL. Love your porch, please keep sharing pictures with us ok as you decorate it. Hugs! (oh, Ps--THAT IS SO NEAT Y'ALL HAVE BEEN TO EDISTO! We drive over that way from time to time just for fun)
ReplyDeleteYes, we are "on the water" quite close, but we sit up high enough that it isn't a problem. And actually "skeeters" haven't been a bad problem. Maybe because we do sit up high and the wind blows them away...or because they love the water and stay down there...or the dragonflies and frogs eat them before they get to us...I don't know, but we haven't been bothered too much with them. We don't usually sit out after dark though, and that is when they are the worst. I should have you come help me decorate! You have such colorful taste and ideas! The only thing about hanging baskets is the wind blows a lot on this side because of being on the water and up high. I don't know if they will stay put well enough. But either way, we are going to enjoy the natural beauty around us as much as possible once it cools down a bit. Thank you for popping in for a visit. I wish it were for real! :) Have a blessed day!
DeleteThank you for always ending with scripture! I love that. Hooray for Billy the handyman and his son! Your PORCH is looking good! What a blessing. Thanks for sharing.
