Wednesday Treasures: Vintage Easter Memories

Hello my friends! Here it is about a week and a half before Easter already!
And that got me to thinking about old family photos and happy Easter memories.

This was my family when I was just a very little girl...yes, that's me down in front with the red hair.
This was Easter Sunday, probably around 1953.  We were at my Aunt Audrey and Uncle Paul's house for Easter dinner apparently, because I know that is their house.  We were all dressed in our Easter Sunday finery. Since this was in Pennsylvania,  I'll bet we wore our winter coats over those pretty little spring dresses. As you can see, we kids all have our Easter baskets on display. We probably weren't allowed to eat any candy out of them until after we had our Easter dinner.   I am also thinking my Grandparents probably were there because my Grandpa always took pictures that became slides. Those were the only pictures that were in color back then, and I know this picture came from a slide because I took a picture of the slide when it was up on the screen at our last family reunion so I could get this photograph. That's probably why it isn't very clear.

Now I am sure that somewhere there are more pictures of Easter day between this one and the next one, but I don't have them...they are somewhere in boxes of photographs that are stored at my sister's house waiting for us to explore someday when she decides to retire and we have lots of time.

I just added this picture a little later...this was my Sunday School on Easter back in about 1957 probably. Notice many of us little girls are wearing hats. I am sitting down on the floor, on the left side, behind a little boy with a dark string bow tie and has on dark pants and light jacket. I have on a hat.

This one I had in my own little album, and here we are in Florida about 8 years after the previous picture.
This is me, my sister Doris, and my mother.  Mom made my dress, and it was a lavender tiny gingham check.  Don't you love the crinolines?
My sister made her own dress. She was a very good seamstress, especially for a teenager.  Her dress was also a lavender and white check. The jacket was lavender.  My Mother's dress was a light blue if I recall correctly. I don't think she made that dress, but she worked full time as a secretary at the Sheriff's Office, and I don't know how she had time to make my dress, let alone do everything else she did so wonderfully.
Please note that we are all wearing white gloves, have white purses and I am sure we had white shoes too.

Here I am again:

Now fast forward a few more years, to probably around 1966 or 67.  This is my cousin Becky and me.
We were always together for holidays (and have lots of fun memories of the things we did). She and her mother, "Aunt Marion", lived in the next town over from us. My grandparents also lived in that same town. We all moved to Florida in the late 1950's.
I believe this is in my grandparents' back yard.  Oh, and guess what?  I made my dress for that Easter. I remember it well.  It was a pale blue kind of a smooth crepe knit material, and the sleeves were a see- through chiffon material of the same color. (I think. I may have my fabrics confused, but I remember the sleeves were see-through, and I don't remember lining the dress, so it must have been something else, but then again, maybe I did line it. I kind of doubt it though. That would have been a lot of work!  That was a long time ago...)   ( just noticed my shoes matched my dress! Wow! I wonder how that happened?)

Fast forward a couple more years, and here I am with my fiance', (who is now my hubby of 51+ years) the Easter before we were to be married in August.  And again I am wearing a light blue dress with white polka dots on it. I made that dress as well. Since this was 1969, the skirt length was inched up a bit, but that was the style. I wish this picture wasn't so faded, but you can see that my hair was still quite red!  This is in the front yard at my parents' home.

That same Easter I gave John this card:

Please note that I circled the "Steiner" in Helen Steiner Rice's name above. I thought that was pretty cool that her name was Steiner, and soon my name would also be Steiner.  I also underlined words that were meaningful to us at that time as we made preparations for our marriage. John was soon to be a senior in college, and I was finishing my freshman year of college and looking for a job so we could get married in August.  I also love that this card showed that we were very much aware of seeking God's plan and purpose for our lives as well as believing in the real meaning of Easter.

Fast forward a few more years, about 9 or 10, and here is our little family on Easter, with my hubby's parents and his brother Billy.  I guess I took the picture since I'm not in it. The folks had come to visit us at our home in Ft. Pierce, where John pastoring our first church.  Precious memories...

And then fast forward another 26 years, and here we are at my parents' home, with most of my extended family...four generations.  Our one and only grandson is on the far left below on the front row, in a red shirt, holding his blue Easter basket. He was about four years old. He is now 21 years old and 6'4" tall.
This was a wonderful day, filled with Easter egg hunts and seeing who could find the golden egg with the prize $5.00 bill in it, along with many other eggs filled with candy and money. It was a lot of fun for all the little great-grandchildren. Priceless memories that still linger.

And now we come full circle from the beginning.  This is that same family that was up at the very top.
My Mom and Dad, (who are now both in heaven)
My oldest brother Russell (who is also now in heaven), me, my brother Clifford, and my sister Doris.
Sadly, this was the last Easter (2005) that our nuclear family was together for Easter, as my mother passed away the following spring.

Of course there are many other happy Easter days that I don't have time or space to share here. Our immediate family still gets together for Easter dinner, and our family tradition is to hide an Easter basket for each member of the family somewhere in the house. It gets pretty challenging for "the Easter Bunny" to find new places to hide the baskets each year so that it won't be too easy for these smart big kids to find them.  Yes, our kids are in their 40's now, but it just wouldn't be Easter without them having to look for their Easter basket. Some traditions just have to be kept. That is how my family did it when I was growing up as well, and so it is a happy tradition that must be continued.

Here's a few pictures of some of my favorite Easter bunnies:

These are each special...the little one with the butterfly on its foot belonged to our son Scott when he was little, the long dark brown one belonged to Benton, and the light brown one in the back belonged to Matthew. My mother had given them to them many years ago.

This green bunny is mine from my childhood. My maternal Grandma Tedlie gave it to me,
so it is a real treasure (and quite old).

These fun bunnies are swinging into Easter and having such a good time:
This was a gift from a good friend many years ago.

Just some more bunnies that I've accumulated, again, they were gifts.

But please rest assured, I know Easter is not about the Easter bunny or Easter baskets or Easter egg hunts, or even about new dresses or white gloves or a ham dinner with the family...
(my grandparents always had leg of lamb for Easter, which I loved, but my family doesn't care for it so I don't get it anymore)

Let's read "An Easter Meditation" that Helen Steiner Rice wrote once again:

That sums it up pretty well.

"There is comfort just in knowing
That God triumphed over sin,
For our Saviour's Resurrection
Was God's way of telling men
That in Christ we are eternal...
and in Him we live again..."

That is pretty good news, wouldn't you agree?

I hope you enjoyed this little walk down the Easter memory lane with me.
May God bless you as you prepare for and contemplate the real meaning of Easter as well.

Have a wonderful week.

  1. This brought back many memories for me. we were a simple and small family, only my sister, me and our parents, but Mom was firm on some traditions . My sister Becky and I always had a new outfit for Easter, which included, white shoes, socks, when we were younger, white gloves and the least liked part for me, an Easter bonnet. Yes, Mom always hid baskets of goodies for us, even into adulthood.

    1. Hi Ruth. After you commented I found another picture that I added up above of our Sunday School on Easter in 1957. You made me think about the Easter bonnet, and I am wearing an Easter bonnet in that picture. And yes, we still hide baskets for our sons and daughter in law. We have fun watching them try to figure out where they are hidden. It's getting harder and harder to fool them. I think traditions are important for families to keep. Those are the happiest memories. You had a sister Becky, and I had a cousin Becky who was closer in age to me than my sister, and we were more like sisters because she was an only child and I was the baby, so we played together a lot and have many happy memories of our childhood. Thank you for visiting and sharing your memories.

  2. I love all the years of beautiful family photos, so fun to see and brings back so many old memories. I think I'll see if I can dig up an Easter photo or two to post sometime this week. I love all of your adorable Easter decorations too!

    1. Oh, I hope you will find some pictures to share! I love to hear how other families celebrated the holidays, especially Easter. In my family, even though we had Easter Baskets and believed in the "Easter Bunny", so to speak, we also went to church and knew the real meaning of Easter and that was very very special to us. But I love having fun and happy family traditions as well. I hope you will share some with us!

  3. Oh Pam, I'm loving this journey down memory lane! Just about the only images of my childhood Easter are contained on 8mm film I keep meaning to have transferred onto a DVD.
Now I don't recall ever having had a crinoline, but the white shoes and gloves ... yep! I'm smiling at the way your feet were so perfectly posed, one in front of the other. How I'd practice that look in front of my mirror! Nowadays, both celebrities and girls have perfected that heel up half crouch. I tried that, but only succeeded in looking like I was desperately needing to use the bathroom. Ha! That pale blue dress with the bell sleeves looks so pretty! I had to make something similar for my final project in Home Ec, but wound up pleading with my BF to finish it for me. And no, she's never let me forget it!

PS - I almost forgot .... LOVE that card. Helen Steiner Rice always nailed it!

    1. Thank you, Myra! Oh, I hope you can have those 8mm films changed over so you can enjoy them again. I would love to see them too. I bet they would be so wonderful. I think we should all share our Easter traditions with each other. Family traditions are so important for making memories. Love your story about the dress in home ec. That's funny. Happy Easter!

  4. I enjoyed your Easter photos and memories thru the years. I have the same memories of crinolines, and Easter hate that pinched my head and ears! I remember one or two Easter baskets during childhood but it was my husband’s family who had a strong tradition of baskets. He gave me an. Easter basket our first year married. There were few restaurants to eat out at and mother always cooked a delicious, formal dinner for Easter. I enjoyed the lovely card you gave your husband and the figurines that are precious to you and your. Children, the home we shared with mother had MANY hidden plastic Easter eggs in the yard. Each time we planted a new plant, we would find an egg but there was never money or candy in it!!!

    1. No, we didn't have money or candy in our eggs as children either. We had the real hard boiled eggs that we died...and then we hid them. Our family rarely ever went out to eat either when I was a child. It was a very rare occasion as there were 4 kids, so 6 of us in all, and that was too much money to spend. We usually had our holiday dinners with my grandparents, and she loved to roast a leg of lamb for Easter and Ham for Christmas. I miss having lamb. It was good!! Thank you for visiting. I know you are busy getting ready for your big move!! Praying for you. Hope everything goes smoothly. Will you be in your new house for Easter? How exciting! Can't wait for you to take some pictures and share with us!! Bye bye for now. (((hugs)))

  5. So many wonderful memories, Pam! My mom made most of our clothes and I sewed in high school, too. Now it costs more to buy a pattern and fabric than it does to buy off the rack, but it wasn't that way back then. White gloves, paten leather shoes, lacy socks... those were the days!! I loved seeing your grow up in these photos! xo

    1. Thank you, Terri. Yes, we grew up in a great age...ladies were ladies, and young ladies were young ladies! We were taught how to dress properly and have manners too. Times sure have changed. I agree, it is much cheaper to buy a dress ready made now than to sew it. Sometimes I wish I could sew one again just to prove I can do it! But then I wonder if I could wear it! LOL. Blessings to you dear friend.

  6. Indeed, it is wonderful news. What precious photos and memories you shared; thank you. I so wish I had copies of our family photos. I sent you an email with a "fade correction" made to the photo of you and your soon-to-be hubby. Beautiful couple!

  7. I loved every single thing about this post. You shared your memories and brought back so many of my own, from dresses, to bunnies to family gatherings. I loved every single picture. You are adorable in your little hat...I found you. I had a hat for two Easters and I made sure my girl, Lindsay had a hat one year. One of mine is a bit more Jackie Kennedy who I am sure my mother was inspired by at the time. She had seen her in Germany when she came to Germany then. I am inspired by her style, but not her party's believes:) Oh and how I love Easter. It is just the basis of everything. He is Risen!
Oh, and I still have my first little bunny.

    1. Thank you, Sandy. I would love to see a picture of you in your "Jackie Kennedy" style hat. I bet you were so cute. Yes, we were inspired by her style...and even though they were of the Democratic party at that time, I have a feeling that President Kennedy would NOT agree with anything that party is doing today. They are not the same party at all...but I won't get off onto politics...but just saying that JFK would not recognize America today. Very sad. But we have hope because yes, Jesus Christ has risen as He said!! and "because He lives, I can face tomorrow! Because He lives...all fear is gone...because I know He holds the future, and life is worth the living just because He lives!" Oh, I'd love to see a picture of your first little bunny too!! Happy Easter.

  8. Y'all were married in August?! So were we, only it was August 11th, 1979. I was 23 and Steve was 31. It will be our 42nd this Summer.
That's wonderful that y'all got to grow up in such a strong, loving Christian family. Neither of us had that privilege but we're working on that now. I'm so thankful that we serve a God of second chances (and 3rd chances, and 4th chances, and 5th chances, and ...). *grin* Thanks for sharing your happy memories. I enjoyed it too.
    Blessings. xx

    1. Good Morning Sparky! Yes, we were married Aug. 16, 1969, so we have 10 years on you!! We will celebrate 52 years this August. I was almost 19 when we got married, and John was 21. We were very young, but we thought we were pretty mature and smart! LOL. We sure had a lot to learn, but God was with us and led us all the way. Yes, my family was a strong Christian family. My hubby's family had some rough spots along the way, but he was blessed by being surrounded by strong Christian grandparents and Aunts and Uncles who helped set good examples when his own parents were having difficulties...but it all turned out good in the end. Yes, I am also thankful that we serve a God of 2nd and 3rd chances...etc. None of us or our families were perfect, and we all had our struggles. Just being strong, loving Christians doesn't exempt us from troubles and trials, but it does give us the foundation to work through those trials when they come...and they DO come to all of us sooner or later. But at the end of our lives if we can look back and see that God was with us all the way, then we have had a very good life. Thank you for visiting and being a very special friend...another "Pamela"!!

  9. Dank je, Pamela. I enjoyed it! And what remains is: because He lives, we can face all our tomorrow's. Because He lives, we can live also. Christ's resurrection is the proof that those who put their faith in Him will also see victory over death (1 Corinthians 15:19–20).

    We shall meet them again.

    1. Thank you, Cecelia. I guess the older we get the more we look back at those memories and give thanks for the blessings that we had through Christ. I know not everyone has such pleasant childhood memories, but if we could only see the bigger picture that God sees, we would know that He was with us all the while, guiding and guarding our lives so that we would come to know Him as Savior and Lord...and that He is still with us, preparing the way for us to all join Him in heaven someday. "Because He lives, all fear is gone!"

    1. OH, my cousin Becky told me when she saw this picture that she also made her dress. The "tent" style was in fashion back then as well. I can imagine making that pleat down the front was pretty tricky, getting it to line up perfectly! We were much more patient back then, I guess. I pray God's blessings to you on Easter and always.

I guess keeping scrapbooks and photo albums isn't such a bad thing to do after all. I hope you and your hubby are feeling better now...you certainly had an "adventure" that I know you don't want to repeat, but God was truly with you. Have a blessed and beautiful Easter.

    1. Thank you, Debby! I am very glad that I saved these pictures and "treasures" to jog my memory! The older we get the more fuzzy our memories become, and it is good to have something to remind us of the happy times as children, etc., even though the memories are tucked away in our hearts...it just takes a little extra stimulus to bring them back out. I am very thankful for the ways God led us and took care of us throughout all the years. Praying you and yours have a blessed and beautiful Easter.

  15. I so enjoyed this post! I don't have many pictures of our Easters. Mom may have a few. I know there are a couple of us posed together in our matching dresses, complete with hats, gloves, and pocketbooks. Your last photo and comments make me realize that of my childhood Easters, if we had big family photos, only Mom and I are left to celebrate together. I have a few cousins floating around, but they are all scattered and far away. We miss them on the holidays, but we make new memories and life goes on. The bunnies aren't the reason for the season, but they sure are cute. I especially like the bunnies on the swings! Thanks for sharing you photos and memories...so precious and cool to see.

    1. Thank you, Stacy. I think that is why I write my blog and take so many pictures...to have a written/photograph memory of happy times with our family and friends to help me recall the good times. The older we get, the fuzzier our memories become, and like you said, our family numbers begin to dwindle and the newer generation just doesn't seem to care as much about getting together with extended family. So we do what we can with our immediate family...you have your precious grandchildren nearby and you are making lots of good memories...I am still praying for your son and his family to be reconciled. Oh, and I am glad you enjoyed seeing the bunnies. yes, they are cute and fun and bring smiles to faces...that is what it is all about...that, and rejoicing that Jesus is alive! And "Because He lives, I can face tomorrow!"...

  16. I enjoyed walking down memory lane with you Pamela! You shared some lovely photos, of priceless memories and times gone by. I enjoyed seeing you through the years, and the memories of the clothing your Mom made, as well as you. I sewed clothes for myself growing up as well. However, like others have said, now it is so much more expensive to sew your own clothes, and just easier to buy them. May you have a blessed and very special Easter this year :)

  17. I too greatly enjoyed walking with you down Memory Lane. You and I must be about the same age--I well remember the Easter hats, white gloves, and hemlines that crept upwards year by year through the 60s, etc. And I too treasure memories of extended family gathered each holiday (and in between). P.S. You and I have something else in common: we were both ministers' wives--in Florida! My husband retired after forty years in the pastorate; we moved back to our roots in the Midwest to be near family/grandchildren.

    1. Oh, how wonderful to know another minister's wife! Wow 40 years is a long time, but I know you have many wonderful memories together. What part of Florida were you in? Who knows? We may have crossed paths at some time. I am glad you are back near your family now. We kind of did the opposite...we were mostly pastoring in the Midwest and other parts north, and then came back home to Florida to be near family! But we started out in Florida as this was our home state. When you accept the call to follow Jesus, I know you sang the song, "Where He leads me I will follow...", and "I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back..." and so we go wherever the Lord leads, and it is quite the adventure! God bless you and your hubby and may you have many years yet to Praise our Lord and enjoy your family!! Happy Palm Sunday.

  19. I have enjoyed this post so much my friend! Love love LOVE all the beautiful Easter memories and seeing the pictures of your family especially the oldest pictures. That photo of you, your sister, and your Mother on Easter, all lined up is just gorgeous, I do hope you have that one framed and somewhere in your house? Love all the white pocketbooks and shoes and the white gloves, I still wear mine on Easter--I am hopelessly old fashioned, now that "i'm old" that's officially okay, right? LOL. You'll never believe it probably but I picked you out IMMEDIATELY from the Sunday school group picture where you're by the lil boy in the tie. I love all the pictures and all the time and work you put into this post. I am so glad Easter is almost here, it's definetly my most favorite holdiday of them all. Hope your weekend is going great. Thank you for visiting with me here and there and everywhere! I so love to hear from you and Tracie and Amybelle and of course Tansy. And Lily Grace is always SO thrilled to hear from all of you. Have a blessed Palm Sunday today!

They look so very similar, and I know when we had them here last year I had to look at them over and over again to be sure what they were...but that little band on the bill is what made the difference! I am glad you have them there. I wish ours would have come back this year, but maybe they liked your pretty pond better! It's nice of them to spread themselves around so we can all enjoy them!!
