Tuesday 4 - Books and TV

Books/TV

Welcome to Tuesday 4 in memory of Toni Taddeo...

This week let's talk about books and TV programs you enjoy.

1. Are you enjoying a book right now and would you tell us about it?

I am sorry to say that I have not been doing much reading these past few months. Not sure why...I got out of the habit when the library was closed for Covid, and then when it opened back up I just never got around to checking out any books.  But I stay busy with our Ladies' Bible Study on Monday, studying the book of Joshua and the Bible study guide "Winning the Worry Battle", a Bible study by Barb Roose.  It is taking us many months to get through it as we spend as much time talking about our "worries" as we do studying how not to worry.  When you get 8 or 9 women together to study how not to worry, you can be assured we do a lot of talking about the worries that we shouldn't be worrying about. But thankfully our Bible study guide helps us learn how to handle those worries by putting our concerns and anxieties in God's capable hands. Our key verse for this study has been Joshua 1:9

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed,  for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

2. Do you have a list of books you are looking forward to reading in the near future?
Not at the moment.  Again, I seem to be stuck in a no-read-mode. I try to keep up with our blogging friends and writing my own posts, and just don't have a lot of "spare reading" time these days.

3. What's on television (or YouTube, etc.) at your house?
Well, I will answer that more completely with the next question.  One thing that is NOT on the TV these days is the news....we have pretty much stopped watching the news except for a little bit in the morning while we eat breakfast.  We might touch base with the news again in the late afternoon, early evening, but if we find it too distressful (which it most ALWAYS is) we turn it off.  My hubby has been watching a lot of ice hockey lately, and other sports. He has some YouTube things that he likes to watch, but I am not much of a TV person. I'd rather visit with you here, or be outside taking pictures with Lily Grace.

4.What series have you followed religiously and why? (can be TV or book series)
Okay, I wouldn't say religiously, but I do enjoy watching Hometown

on HGTV when it is on, and Maine Cabin Masters on DIY. They've been on a little break right now and I am getting anxious for them to start up again. I love that one in particular because we used to live in Maine, and I love to hear them talk and see how they do things because it reminds me of of my son Matthew, who lived in Maine before he passed away, and these people on Maine Cabin Masters just remind me of his friends and they way they all enjoyed life there. Plus I've always wanted a "cabin" or "camp" of our very own and seeing how they do those so wonderfully for people really makes me happy.

But right now the show hubby and I have been watching the most is the old British series, "The Saint", starring Roger Moore.

We have really enjoyed this old action/mystery/private eye series.  They call him "The Saint" because even though he gets involved in some pretty gritty stuff, he always ends up on the right side and does something good for somebody in the process.  Of course, he really isn't a "saint"...he loved women, gambling, and a little too much champagne for my taste, but the shows are fun to watch and Roger Moore as Simon Templar was pretty good looking too!  I told our son Scott that he reminds me a lot of him as I watch him in action...I could picture him playing that kind of a role if he was an actor.

But thankfully Scott doesn't have that same kind of lifestyle as "Simon Templar".
The Saint had six seasons, and we are in the sixth season now, so not sure what we will do when this is over.  We also have enjoyed watching the old Sherlock Holmes series, but there just weren't enough of them!

Well, I know this was a completely frivolous post, probably not in keeping with "Holy Week", but it is fun to do something a little different and fun once in a while.   Oh, hubby just called me from the living room and said it was time to watch "Simon" again (meaning "the Saint").  We usually watch one episode while we eat lunch...so I guess that is also my cue to get lunch ready.  Hey, trust me, it is better than watching the news any day!

I hope you are having a blessed and wonderful week.  The rose from the Memorial Garden is blooming for Holy Week. Just another special blessing from heaven...

Now let's go see what others are sharing today on Tuesday 4.

  1. I go through spits and spurts with my reading. I've never watched "The Saint". Sounds interesting. His pre-Bond days, it looks like.

    1. Yes, these are "pre-Bond" days for Roger Moore. I think we will look up his Bond movies after we are finished with this series and watch those. I never watched them before that I can remember because I preferred Sean Connery as Bond and didn't want to change...but now I want to see more of Roger Moore! LOL. We have enjoyed this series. Stories are somewhat reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes episodes, but with a more modern twist...as modern as the 1960's could be. LOL. We thought we were modern back then, but things are much more advanced now. I hope you have a blessed and wonderful Holy Week.

    1. Yes, I believe everyone enjoys doing these weekly questions. And I know Toni would be so pleased to see her legacy continuing on. Thank you for making it possible. Hope you are having a better week...still praying for you and your relative who is not well. Also hope the rain stopped before it did too much damage...

    2. Yes, the rain only creeped a bit under my back laundry room door.. the gutter is leaking badly there. It needs cleaning out I guess. :)

  3. I like Hometown and Maine Cabin Masters too. I'm actually watching them again since I just signed us up for Discovery+. Love that cute vignette at the end. It's a cute little setting for your son's picture. :) Hope you are having a happy and blessed Holy Week!

    1. I figured you would like those same shows! We had Discovery+ for a while, but I got frustrated because they didn't have the most recent episodes of Maine Cabin Masters, and that was the "main" one I wanted to see. But we also have Sling, and I can watch them on there, just have to watch the commercials too...boo! Have a blessed and wonderful Holy Week as well.

  4. I love Hometown and Main Cabin Masters also. Though I do DVR them, watch the beginning, then fast forward to the reveal most of the time.

    1. Yes, we also have them on "demand", which means we can watch them anytime, but I still can't get past the commercials...which is frustrating. But they are both an enjoyable series with happy people doing them. that is why I enjoy them so much.

  5. I'm glad you have your Bible Study. It's been years since I've been in one but I always got so much out of it. Yep, no news for me! We are new to Home Town are I love it. I think my husband has watch Maine Cabin Masters. Enjoy the rest of your week. Take care.

    1. I have enjoyed our Ladies' Bible Study primarily for the fellowship as we learn together from God's Word how to deal with "worry". There's a lot of "therapy" going on with encouraging one another...there are so many needy women...but God's Word is the place to get the help they need. Oh, I am glad you enjoy Home Town. Erin and Ben are so sweet, and they do a great job. It's a happy place to visit! Have a blessed Easter/Holy Week.

  6. Pam: I am watching "Murdoch Mysteries". It takes place in Toronto, Cananda. The lead player is Yannick Bisson. I record them and watch them when there is nothing else on that I want to see. I have done a lot of reading lately, I am reading three devotional books, actually one is a booklet. The booklet is what we would have studied if Sunday school class was able to meet. The class will be starting up again the Sunday after Easter. But I will be in quarantine, preparing for my surgery.Peace and blessings to you and yours.

    1. I wish you would send me a private message regarding your surgery...unless I missed something on your blog (I'll go check), I don't know what surgery you are having...and when exactly will it be? Praying for you for whatever the need is...God is in control and He knows exactly how to take care of you. Peace and blessings to you as well.

  7. I'm still re-reading a book on Queen Eleanor (1100's Medieval England). I'm such a slow reader.
Funny that y'all are studying about worry. One of the preachers I enjoy listening to on our local 88.3 FM (Good News Network) is Rev. Chuch Swindoll. He lives in Texas. His sermons have been about worry and being a Christian. I didn't know it's a sin to worry. Opps. I messed up there! Anyway, I love his sermons. They keep me going in the right direction and encouraging me to follow the LORD every day.
Home Town is one of my favorite home fixer shows. I wish I could decorate as good as that young lady. We don't have DirecTV anymore and that is the show I miss most.
    Have a blessed day! xx

    1. Oh, I love Chuck Swindoll. One of my favorite sayings about "worry" comes from him: "Don't sweat the small stuff, and remember, it's ALL small stuff!" Oh, I am sorry you can't get Hometown. What provider do you use for your TV? If you had a ROKU device and your wifi, you might be able to pull in a lot of other good programming for much less money than Direct TV or any other cable system. That's what we do. We had to ditch the cable...just too expensive. But don't ask me what all we do have, because hubby is constantly changing it to get the programming he wants. But it's all much cheaper than cable or dish. I've never heard of Queen Eleanor...I should look her up...she's before my time...lol. Have a blessed Easter dear friend!

  8. What a fun post! I don't recall ever having seen The Saint; but yes, your Scott certainly resembles 'Simon'! We watch entirely too much news, but at least Tom's not turned on CNN in months. Small comfort, but we enjoy Newsmax's points of view, knowing we're not alone.
Your Bible class sounds much like the one I attend. I'm not especially enjoying our current study (The Power of Jesus' Names by Tony Evans), but the ladies' camaraderie is something else! I remember telling someone, there's more caring and sharing going on than actual Biblical verses.

    1. Ha ha, the fun thing about our son Scott and "Simon" is they both love fast cars and are quick witted and agile. Of course, "Simon" uses a stunt man for all his stunts. When Scott was younger he could have done a lot of those stunts, but age is creeping up on him too. (I don't dare mention it to him, however. He still thinks he's 18). LOL. Yes, we also watch Newsmax and some Fox, but limit that to the Fox and Friends in the morning. Our ladies' Bible Study is more of a therapy session I think in some ways. I get a little frustrated sometimes that we don't stick to the "program" as much as we should and get off on side tracks, but I've found that we always find a way to bring it back to what the Lord is trying to teach us through the lesson from His Word, and that is how it should be. Women today are very needy, and this is the best place to get those needs addressed spiritually, with God's Word as the foundation. Have a blessed Holy Week, dear Myra! Lily Grace sends her love.

  9. I'm such a news junkie, Pamela, it's difficult for me to stay away, but I've really been trying. One show that I never want to miss, however, is The Five on Fox News. I love how the panel interacts with one another and always ends the show on a cheerful note, something we all need. Waiting for some books to come in to read as I'm kind of bored with what I have now.
In case you didn't see my response to your comment on my blog, Danny is now home and the kids are going to come visit us over spring break! God is so good!
    Blessings!

    1. Praise God that Danny is home safe and sound! And praise God again that the kids are coming to visit soon!!! That is wonderful news!! As far as news goes, we used to enjoy the Five, but it seems like all the news lately ends up in people arguing and the noise just gets to me and I cannot tolerate it. So we watch things that are more interesting and less stressful. And we pray for our country and our leaders and pray that God will open the eyes of the blind before it is too late. That is our one hope and prayer. Amen. Happy Easter and Blessed Holy week to you and yours. And I am so happy your kids are coming soon.

  10. I read a lot, but I am also on a reading break right now. Just for the past couple of weeks. I am reading a book a co-worker let me borrow, but I am going back on my break after that. Your Bible study sounds wonderful!
I always watch the local news because I need to know what the weather is going to do so I know how to dress (recess duty). Sometimes I will watch Tucker Carlson on Fox for some national news stories. Loved your answers! Have a nice week.

  11. Amen to Joshua 1:9! I would rather watch paint dry than watch the news!! I enjoyed your answers, Pam! Hello to your hubby and that handsome son of yours! xo

  12. I think your day, and the choices you have made in what you watch, sound delightful! I loved the old Ghost and Mrs. Muir series, but like many good shows, there weren't enough seasons!

  13. Interesting how our lives change over time. I used to read a lot, but now it seems to take forever to read a book. As for watching TV, I don’t. YouTube, now that’s a different story. I watch and listen to all my favorite Southern Gospel music.

  14. The rose! Isn't it wonderful how that happens. I don't watch a ton a TV these days. Nothing really interests me. There could be some wonderful shows on some of the subscription services but of course they have to push the envelope with stuff these days, so I have basically given up TV as entertainment. Jeff still tries but he is still working and just needs a relaxing thing to do in the evenings. I stitch to fill those hours. I love to read, but I got a little off track with that too. I am trying to find my mojo now. I have a new book that my son said was good to start today.
