Wednesday Treasures From My Grandparents

So, here it is Wednesday again, and a time to share with you some of my special "treasures"...things that I've saved from childhood, or other collections of particular items of interest. And after last night's debate (did you stay up and watch it to the "bitter end"? I did....wow, what a brawl!) I thought we might need something pleasant and sweet to look at this morning to take our minds off of the craziness.
I wasn't sure what it would be for this week, until I thought of something that I hadn't seen in a while and wanted to pull it out of it's box in the closet and enjoy it for a little while.

Yes, that is a set of bunk beds, doll bunk beds to be specific, made especially for me by my Grandpa Mursch when I was a little girl. (My paternal grandpa).

He was a skilled craftsman, and built other nice toys and things for his other grandchildren too. I believe my sister had a lovely high-chair for her dollies. I'm not sure if she still has it, as when our family moved to Florida from Pennsylvania back in the 1950's, we had to leave some things behind in storage at my uncle's farm, and I'm not sure we ever got everything back from there that we had left behind.

But somehow I managed to keep my doll bunk beds. And I've managed to keep them well over 60 years, through many moves in my own adulthood.  I never had a little girl to play with them, so that is probably why they are still in such great shape.
(P.S. After getting ready to post this, I realized that those bookshelves behind the doll bed were also built by my grandpa!! They hold my collection of favorite old antique books. Another treasure!)

My grandfather doesn't get all the credit for this lovely set.
My grandmother also had a part in making it so nice and comfy for my dollies.

She made the lovely mattresses for the beds:

This is a closeup of the sweet little rosebud pattern on the mattresses:

This the underside, where she stitched them together with pink yarn:

Now doesn't my little "Sandra" doll look comfy and cozy? You met Sandra HERE last week. She was lovingly created for me by my maternal grandma Tedlie. Maybe my grandmas got together and collaborated on these special gifts...I really don't know, but I am happy I still have them!

The cover on the mattress above is an old embroidered pillowcase, made by my husband's grandma,
"Nanny Martin".  I thought it was cute to use as a sheet over the mattress.  So it seems I've gotten all the grandmas in the act here today! LOL.

But I actually wanted to focus on the things that came from my paternal grandparents.
Here they are in a more casual moment. I loved seeing this photo of them. I'd never really seen them this "playful" together before . Kind of gave me a new insight into their relationship.

Here is another treasure from my grandma.
She loved tea and teacups just like me. Or maybe I liked them just like her...probably that is the way it was...anyway, she gave me this delicate rosebud teacup and saucer one year for either my birthday or Christmas.  Isn't it lovely?  The pattern is "June Bouquet", by Duchess Bone China, made in England. My grandma must have also loved roses and rosebuds, since that is the pattern on the little doll bed mattresses as well as on this teacup!

And here is another special little treasure from my grandparents:

This is a Madame Alexander doll, "Wendy",  and she is so lovely in her pretty gold taffeta gown and brown velvet jacket. She used to have a little white fur muff and hat to go with the outfit, but they are long gone. She is a bit worse for the wear. This is the kind of Madame Alexander doll that could bend her legs at the knees. However, her little legs came apart and are no longer connected. I'm sure they could be restored with proper rubber bands and someone who knows what they are doing. But for now she must stay seated in the pretty glass bowl in the china cabinet. You will notice that she has red hair. That was because I also had red hair. I've probably had her since I was about seven or eight years old.
(I just noticed that there is a photo bomber in this picture! Ha ha. That was unplanned! The china closet has a mirrored back)

And this is another special little doll, "Ginger". I'm sure many of you remember the Ginny dolls.
She is also well loved and rather worn, but at least she still has her legs! LOL. Again, another special gift from my grandparents when I was a young girl.

One year for my birthday I received a lovely Cinderella Watch. (The watch is long gone). This pretty little china doll came with the watch. She has had her shares of calamities as well. I had to glue her head back on when she fell and broke her neck. Actually her arms were also broken when she fell, and it appears she had to be glued back together at her waist. Poor Cinderella! I do hope her Prince will come and love her just the way she is! She has had a very difficult life. But look! She's still smiling! Perhaps that young man with the bagpipes standing next to her is making her happy.
He must be a true Prince!

One last special treasure for this day:
This sweet little white teapot and teacup and saucer belonged to my Grandma. I didn't receive it until after she had passed away.  I'm not sure if my sister and I used this little set when we visited our Grandma as little girls. I do remember having a tea party on her front porch many, many years ago when we all still lived in Pennsylvania. Maybe my sister remembers better than I do. My memories from that far back are very fuzzy since I was still such a little girl.
The picture of the little girl having her breakfast with her Teddy Bear is a card that I found one time many years ago and loved it so much that I bought it and have kept it. I guess I like to pretend that was me once upon a time.

I hope you enjoyed this little walk back through my childhood memories. I hope to be sharing more about this particular Grandma in the next few months. She is the one I am focusing my genealogical research on since she was adopted as an infant. Her 125th birthday is coming up in December, and I am hoping to have a more complete story to tell about her by then. So stay tuned!

Here are some words of wisdom for those of us who are grandparents:

Deuteronomy 4:7-9
7.  "For what great nation is there that has God so near to it,
as the Lord our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him?
8.  And what great nation is there that has such statutes and righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set before you this day?
9.  Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life.
And teach them to your children and your grandchildren."

Also from Psalm 103:17-18

17.  "But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting
on those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children's children,
18.  To such as keep his covenant,
and to those who remember His commandments to do them."

The most important gift we can give our grandchildren is to teach them about the God Who loves them...about Jesus our Savior Who gave His life for them so that they can have eternal life and life more abundant.  My grandparents were devout Christian people who lived their lives as good stewards of the gifts He had given them. They were always active in their church, actually were founding members of their church when they moved to Florida and there was no church nearby where they lived. They were not showy or demonstrative people, but lived a peaceful, thoughtful life and set a good example for their children and their grandchildren. I appreciate that "gift" of living humbly and honestly before God most of all.

  1. I might describe the debate in a bit different way, but I sure enjoyed this post because I recognize so much of it. My sister, who is nearly four years younger than I, has such vague memories of childhood. Mine are much more vivid. What wonderful grandparents who obviously adored their grands and blessed them with just the sorts of toys a little girl could really appreciate. I love that you still have your dollies' bunk beds. I received a watch one year that had Alice in Wonderland as the figurine. She's still on my bookcase even though a hand has been lost over the years. Yes, I do remember the Ginny dolls. My sister was the one who received those. I wonder if she still has them somewhere. Have a pleasant day!

    1. Thank you, Vee. I am glad you stopped in for a visit back through childhood with me. We must be from the same era. It's fun to go back in time and think of pleasant times when life wasn't so complicated for us. You must check with your sister and see if she still has her Ginny Dolls. I have a couple of other dresses for mine...one was a nurse outfit...actually, it fit both of these dolls, and I think I used it interchangeably that way. Happy days. Hope you have a pleasant day too!

  2. Passing on the love of God to our grandchildren is certainly the greatest legacy we could leave, Pam. Thanks for the tour of all the lovely things your grandparents gave you when you were little. I'm amazed that you've been able to hang onto them for so long! They are treasures, indeed.
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Martha. Yes, that legacy of love of God is THE most important thing we can share with our children and grandchildren. My greatest hope is that they see "Christ living in me." Regarding the "treasures", I am amazed to still have them as well. We have moved more times than I can count and somehow these things survived. I guess because when we reach this age we have so few tangible reminders of our childhood, it is nice to still have something that links us to our loved ones. They stir up happy memories when we are struggling in a sad sad world. Have a blessed and beautiful day, my friend.

    1. Thank you, Cathy. That is the whole purpose of keeping them, to remember the dear ones who selected and/or created these special "treasures" just for me. It is a way of connecting with those that have gone on before and has helped me to appreciate them even more now that I am an adult.

  6. What lovely treasures you have dear lady! My mercy. I know these special things bring you so much love and many wonderful memories. I am such a sentimental person and the older I get the more I am sentimental. Maybe it's age...maybe it's pure out APPRECIATION! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

    1. Yes, I believe we do get more sentimental with age, because we begin to truly value the things our parents and grandparents taught us as well as the little gifts they may have given us along the way. Being grandparents ourselves, we know how much we love our grandchildren and want them to know Christ and to thrive in a pure and happy life...and I'll betcha our grandparents felt the same way about us! We just didn't understand when we were kids. Thank you, Cindy, for understanding!!

    1. The "things" that I have are material things, but they represent real live people who once lived and were such a big part of my life. It's good to have a few tangible reminders of the dear ones we called grandma and grandpa, or mom and dad. But even better to have the knowledge that they lived to help us have a better life and set a good example for us. That is the best treasure of all.

    1. They were special people. I wish now that I would have spent more time listening to their stories and asking more questions about their lives. I wish I'd known then what I know now about life and growing up and loving your kids and grandkids. I was too young to appreciate the real people they were, and now I wish I'd tried harder to know them better.

  9. Ohhhh, Pamela, what wonderful treasures built & made especially for you & your dolls!! A piece of Pamela history...fabulous. And those books...what are some of the titles?

    1. Oh, thank you Anni. They are special treasures to remind me of very dear people who once lived and loved and walked this life before me as an example of how to live. The books are collections I've accumulated. I have a collection of books from George Barr McCutcheon (Graustark series, Brewster's Millions), and another author, Mary J. Holmes, old fashioned novels/romance/mysteries written around the late 1800's early 1900's. I have some Louisa May Alcott, "Jane Eyre", and other less known authors but were all written around the turn of the 20th century.

    1. Thank you, Mary. I guess I am stubborn about holding on to these things, but they are a link to precious people that once lived and loved and set a good example for me growing up. I wish I had taken more time to ask them more about their lives...I was too young to appreciate all they had done and accomplished. Isn't that the way it always is? You have those precious little ones coming up. I hope you have the opportunity to share your life's precious treasures and memories with them...the things that really matter...your love of the Lord is the most important of all! Thank you for visiting today. Wondering if that new great granddaughter has made her appearance yet?

    1. Thank you, Ruth. I do cherish the memories of my dear grandparents. I think I appreciate them more now than I ever did as a child. Some things you just don't understand or appreciate until you are older.

  12. I enjoyed my visit here today. I love your antiques from your grandparents. I have a few special items too. My treasures items are my grandmother's Bibles. I have pearl necklace from one grandma and a diamond heart pendant from my other grandma. I have other things. I have a quilt from one grandma and a crocheted blanket from the other. They are all special to me. I love your book case and books. Have you read all the books? I like the picture of your grandma sitting on your grandpa's lap.

    1. Thank you Susan. I am so glad you came! Oh, your family "treasures" from your grandparents sound wonderful! You should share them some time on your blog! That would be lovely to see. As for my books...yes, I have read all of the ones in that bookcase. Some I have read several times. They are very old, most from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. I love old fashioned "romances", adventure stories and some mysteries. I have a few favorite old authors that are no longer in print and the books are about to fall apart, but I love the stories and hate to part with them. And yes, that picture of my grandparents was a surprise. My cousin sent it to me recently, and it was very special. I never saw my grandparents like that before and it was very endearing to me! Thank you again for your visit.

  13. I am late commenting today because I kept my grandson today. I love to get him every now and then and spend the day with him. How appropriate your verses were! Not too long ago I came to the conclusion there was very little I could do about the mess that happens in our country or the news, but I could pour into my children and grandchild.
As always, I love your treasure posts. I won't get one out this week, but maybe next week. That bunk bed is amazing and truly a treasure.

    1. Thank you Sandy. How wonderful that you are able to spend time with your precious grandson, and I know you are teaching him so much by your love and example. That is the most important gift we could ever give our children/grandchildren...teach them to love God and to love others. There can be no greater gift. Thank you for taking the time to visit. Always good to hear from you.

  14. What beautiful treasures you have and memories to go with them. I have special treasures too with memories. If anyone else saw them, they would see junk.

    1. Thank you, Kim. Our "treasures" may be "junk" to others, but not to us because we knew the people or the memories attached to them, and that is why they become treasures. If our little "trinket" reminds us of someone we loved or who loved us, it becomes very special as it invokes pleasant memories. There is nothing wrong with that. We always hope that we will leave some kind of special memory in the heart of someone when we leave this world, to know that we made some kind of difference in another person's life is very comforting when all is said and done. Blessings, my friend!
