Tuesday 4: September

September

Welcome to Tuesday 4 where we honor the memory and legacy of our dear friend Toni Taddeo who started the concept of Tuesday 4 years ago.

Since this week is the first week in September and autumn is on the way, lets discuss that topic,
okay?

1.What memories does September bring back to you of school, autumn, songs, movies? Would you share with us?
September is probably my most favorite month of the year because it is also my birth month! I always got excited (and still do) when September rolls around because not only did we get to go back to school and see all our friends after being away for summer vacation, but I knew that my birthday would be a special day with a birthday cake, and many happy surprises. When I got a little older my mother would bake me an apple pie instead of a cake because that is what I asked for. (and she was an expert pie baker).

Here are a few "vintage pictures" from some September memories:

Me on my first day of school, first grade!

And this picture isn't very flattering, but it was me, blowing out the candles on my birthday cake when
I was 8 years old. I sort of resemble a monkey. LOL.

And here is my tenth birthday...L to R: neighbor Kim, my cousin Becky, me, my best friend Rhonda, and a former neighbor Linda. That was the birthday my grandma gave me my first (and only) Barbie doll! I still have it...and she will be 60 on this upcoming birthday, so that is a clue as to how old I will be...

And here I am many years later with an apple pie for my birthday. Sadly, my mother didn't bake this one.
She had already passed away, and so my sister Doris took over that job and now bakes
me an apple pie every year for my birthday! She's a good sister.

September also meant the beginning of football season at school, and cheerleading for me.
This was before cheerleaders had to do all those acrobatic/gymnastic feats to qualify.
I wouldn't have been able to do all of that back then. All we had to do was jump a lot and make lots of noise! I was good at that!

2. September is the first of what are called the "ber" months. and the end of summer and beginning of autumn. Which do you enjoy more, summer or autumn and why?

I definitely prefer autumn to summer. Here in Florida, where I live, summer is very very hot and humid.
I really do not enjoy being out in the heat or sun that much, being fair complected and I burn and
freckle very easily!
Autumn doesn't really get here until October, but September starts to change to a little bit cooler, or
a little less hot.  The nice thing about autumn in Florida is that it stays a lot longer than it does up
north. Our winters are very mild, and more like fall. So we enjoy about 6 months of very pleasant
weather normally.

3.Have you ever gone apple or pumpkin picking or gone into a corn maze? What was that like?

Oh yes, when we lived up north we went apple and pumpkin picking. I've never done a corn maze, however. Not sure I'd like that feeling of being lost in a corn field. I tend to be claustrophobic and that just doesn't appeal to me.  But when we lived up north our usual Saturday morning routine in the fall was to take a nice ride into the country in search of an apple orchard. They often also had pumpkin patches too. One place I remember in particular always had hot apple cider and fresh homemade donuts for sale. That was our "breakfast" while we looked for the right apples and pumpkins to take home.  And then of course the apples became a wonderful apple pie or applesauce. The pumpkins became a jack o lantern sometime around Halloween, but until then they just decorated the front porch.  I miss that so much. Yes, there are pumpkin patches here, but not where they actually grow the pumpkins.  They are still fun to to go to and pick out the perfect pumpkin.

4.Are fall weekends different for you than summer weekends? What do you enjoy in autumn?

We often have some kind of family get together on the weekends in the fall. I love bonfires and s'mores, hot dogs cooked on the fire and hikes in the woods.  Just being outside more because it is cooler.
S'more anyone?

A couple of years ago with my son Scott and my grandson Noah, roasting marshmallows and making s'mores.

I love gathering wildflowers and making pretty bouquets...

And this year I am really looking forward to doing some porch sitting now that we have a real porch to sit upon!

So those are some of my September memories and pleasures. How about you?
Most of all I pray that September will be a healthy and safe month for us all.

From today's devotional readings:

Psalm 145:18-19
18.  "The Lord is near to all who call upon Him,
To all who call upon Him in truth.
19.  He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him;
He also will hear their cry and save them."

Happy September everyone!

    1. Thank you, Linda. It was fun going back down memory lane. September is definitely my favorite month. And my decorations in these pictures are from last year. I haven't pulled anything out yet this year, but I am getting more inspired now. Have a blessed day.

  2. Happy Birthday to a September girl. I am one decade behind you as I am turning 60 in two weeks. Loved the pictures of you as a girl. I do remember the days of cheerleading like that. My aunt was one back in that time period in our wee small school. By the time I arrived to that age you had to do flips and I can't even do a cartwheel:)

    1. Well, happy early birthday to you! How exciting to know that you are also entering a new decade of life! It's kind of amazing to me that I could be this old already. I still feel like that little girl in the pictures in my mind...not my body. And no, we never did flips or cartwheels in our cheers. We jumped up and down and did little routines back and forth and with our arms, and yelled really loud. I was good at that part. I wasn't the most coordinated in the bunch, that's for certain! And I went to a very small school too...was there for all 12 years. There were 50 in my graduating class! We had our 50th class reunion in 2018. I think only about 20 of our classmates were there, plus their spouses, etc. But most of us are still living. Anyway, Happy September Birthday Girl!

  3. I loved all your birthday pictures!! We have some dear friends that have a daughter named Rhonda, and I had to take a second look because your Rhonda could be her twin!! Your fall decor is so pretty, I haven't done a thing yet. You have inspired me, I think I'll get busy and get some fall out too!!

    1. Thank you, Mary...how funny that your "Rhonda" could be a twin to my "Rhonda". That is really interesting. Would love to see a picture of her. I haven't seen my Rhonda in a few years...since our 50th class reunion, but we have stayed friends all these years. We went from 1st through 12th grades together. Also, these pictures of my fall decor are from last year. I haven't done anything yet either. But seeing these pictures again helped me to remember what I've got stored away and I should go look for it and get it out soon! LOL.

  4. Happy September birthday to you Pam! You were such a cute little girl and you're still cute. Loved all the pictures of you. You were a cheerleader and that is so cool. I always wanted to be, but I didn't have the nerve to try out. Oh well, it was fun doing it at home. lol Hope you have a great day!

    1. Oh thank you Cathy. I went to a very small school from 1st through 12th grades where everyone knew everyone. I was not the most coordinated cheerleader, but I made up for it in how loud I could cheer! Some things have not changed. LOL. Have a wonderful day.

  5. What a coincidence, Pamela - you were a cheerleading captain, and so was I in my senior year! And no, I never would have been one either if we had to do any gymnastics; as it was, I worked tirelessly on my jumps. I had "thunder thighs" to be sure!
Loved the old photos and like you, I love fall, too.
    Blessings!

    1. Hello fellow Cheerleader Captain! No wonder we have hit it off as friends! And yes, I had to work at my jumps and routines. Being a lefty I tend to do everything backwards, and often had to correct myself when the other girls were moving the opposite direction! But I made up for my lack of coordination with my very loud yellss. (cheers!) 2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits a dollar! All for the Bulldogs stand up and Holler!! Happy Fall to you!

    1. Thank you, Kim! So many of my friends seem to be born in September...maybe it's because we have that in common and it attracts us to each other! I don't know, but Happy early birthday to you too!!

  7. Pamela! It is my birth month too, I also prefer pie and I was also a cheerleader! We have so much in common! I learned so much about you today. Loved your answers! Have a nice Tuesday!

    1. Wow! That is amazing! You look much younger than I, so I bet you had to do all kinds of acrobatic/gymnastic type stunts to be a cheerleader, right? All I did was jump and yell a lot! Thank you for visiting. I will try to pop in at your place too.

  8. Happy September birthday to you! I love seeing all the photos of you when you were growing up, so adorable and all the other great photos today too. Of course I can relate to everything about our Florida weather. I miss the little bit of change of seasons back when I lived in Ocala and never any tourists up there either that I can recall. Happy September! :)

    1. Thank you Martha. There are snowbirds in and around Ocala, but not as many as further south. Of course, there's The Villages just south of Ocala, but I try to avoid that place as much as possible. Where we are there are some snowbirds, but this is a pretty quiet country community. Not something most city people from up north would like that much, but it suits me just fine! You have a happy September too!

  9. Great photos, Pam! I love your birthday and cheer leading memories! You do not look like a monkey... just a determined 8-year old who wants to blow out all the candles!! Great post!

    1. Thank you for your kind description of me at age 8. LOL. We have lots of those kinds of pictures of all of our family members, much to their chagrin. LOL. That's the fun of it all!

  10. Hi, It's always fun to read your posts and then to enjoy the comments too. Funny how many of your followers/friends have much in common with you! Autumn is also my favorite season. I was a very shy person until about age 30, so cheerleading was out of the question! lol It's always fun to see pumpkins and apples for sale in north GA and to enjoy a fried apple pie at one of the apple houses. I love seeing your photos over the years - you have always had that beautiful smile. Have a pleasant evening. Is your birthday the 25th?

    1. Thank you, Mildred. Apparently I was never a very shy person, so being a very loud cheerleader worked out well for me! LOL. I tried to be a majorette like my best friend Rhonda (seen above in one picture), but I was not very coordinated and kept hitting myself in the head with the baton. So cheerleading was much safer for me. Oh, I wish we could take a little trip north to north GA for apple season! Probably October? I would love that so much. Wish I could talk hubby into traveling...he just doesn't like to drive long distances esp. through Atlanta! Never again he said. Thank you for your kind words, and yes, the 25th is my birthday. It will be a "big one". Hope you are doing well this week. God bless you my friend.

    1. Thank you, Annie. I cheated on the fall decorations...these pictures were from last fall. I haven't done a lick of decorating yet. I usually wait until after Labor day, but since we won't be having any gatherings here this year for the holiday I guess I might as well pull out the fall decorations. It's time to think "cooler" thoughts! Thank you for doing the Tuesday 4. Have a blessed week my friend.

  13. Pam: I love the colors that the leaves turn. I like to go to an apple orchard and get apples. When our son was young, we found an orchard in the south part of our county. The man who waited on us allowed us to go up into the orchard itself. He did accompany us. Sometimes, I have decorated our coffee table with gourds and such. Hubby's birtday is this month. I just might do that again. Peace and blessings to you and yours.

    1. Yes, I love to decorate with fall leaves and gourds, etc. I haven't actually decorated yet. These pictures are from last year's decorations. I usually wait until after Labor Day to put up the fall decorations. It's just been too hot to even think about it right now. 93 degrees right now at almost 7 pm!
