Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!

Thankful Thursday~Special Blessings
So much to be thankful for in these turbulent times. Thankful that Hurricane Sally, that went nearby yesterday, did not cause us any harm, and as far as I know, the people that I personally know in the panhandle area were not seriously affected, but there is much devastation around them. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who may be dealing with the effects of this storm.
I was blessed and thankful to see this little rose blooming in the Memorial Garden yesterday.
It is reaching toward the sun and the pond...
and toward the sign that is there in memory of our son. I am always thrilled to get a flower from his garden.
It is like a special gift from heaven, usually close to some special event. My birthday is coming up in a week, and as I don't see any other buds forming on the bush currently, I will accept this as my birthday rose from my son. Thank you, Matthew! I hope it will last all week. Sometimes they do.
Not sure what kind of bugs these are,* but they seem to be a pair and both are enjoying the nectar of this little yellow wildflower where we take our walks:
I am thankful for these special little blessings from nature. Always a treat to see something new and interesting. Another amazing part of God's Creation.
*Note: it is a "Notch-tipped Flower Longhorn" type of beetle.
Another special gift this week, as I was sitting inside at my computer in my "room with a view", all of a sudden this hawk flew up onto the porch railing outside my window. I wish the pictures were a little clearer, but I had to use my phone camera and zoom, and the shadows were kind of dark, so it isn't as clear as I'd like, but what a neat surprise!
I've never seen one come up this close to the house before.
At first I thought it was our usual Red Shouldered Hawk, but after looking at it more closely, I believe it is a Cooper's Hawk, because of his white throat and hooded forehead. Whatever he is, he was a total surprise and a blessing to me.
Another blessing was lighting this little fireplace the other night...
No, we didn't turn on the heat..., just the flame for the ambiance. The nights are getting darker a little earlier,
and it was fun to pretend it was cool enough for a fire:
We were celebrating the fact that our kids made it home safely from their trip to Minnesota.
Here is our sweet daughter in law Rose (right), with her sister Sherri, who came with them to stay for awhile.
Here is our wonderful son Benton:
And my handsome hubby John:
Thankful also for our son's help in spreading some dirt in our back yard.
We are dealing with some erosion issues because of all the rain, and adding dirt is a temporary solution, while we figure out a more permanent fix.
Just so thankful to have strong people to help us!
I am also thankful that my cold seems to have pretty much gone away. It really acted more like a bad allergy/sinusitis attack. Whatever it was, I am glad it is going, going, gone!
Our Psalm of praise from this morning's devotion came from Psalm 118
1. "Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever."
14. "The Lord is my strength and song,
and He has become my salvation.
15. The voice of rejoicing and salvation
is in the tents of the righteous;
The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
16. The right hand of t he Lord is exalted;
The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
17. I shall not die, but live,
and declare the works of the Lord.
18. The Lord has chastened me severely,
but He has not given me over to death.
19. Open to me the gates of righteousness;
I will go through them,
and I will praise the Lord.
20. This is the gate of the Lord,
Through which the righteous shall enter.
21. I will praise You,
For You have answered me,
and have become my salvation."
29. "Oh, give thanks to the Lord,
for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever."
Amen.

I am thankful for you and sharing your family with us. Smiles. Hope you have a beautiful day, friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting. You are always welcome here in "our neck of the woods". Please come again soon! :)
DeleteThe rose really is special and I love that beautiful hawk! What a neat sighting. I am having some seasonal allergies so that may be what you are experiencing! Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteYes, I think you are right about the allergies. They can still make you miserable, but I seem to be on the tail end of it, at least I hope so. 'Tis the season! LOL.
DeleteGlad you are feeling better and so glad you have so many things to be thankful for. I love that you got a beautiful birthday rose from Matthew, that is the most special blessing of all!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Martha. Yes, I love how this rosebush sends roses at just the right time always...that is why I know they are little heavenly gifts. I do need to actually plant it and fertilize it and it would probably bloom more often. I think we are settled enough now to actually go ahead and plant it, but I just wanted to be sure it liked that location before I planted it. I believe it does...
DeleteOhhhhh, yes! It's a Cooper's hawk. so beautiful. I cried a bit when I read about your memorial rose being a gift from your son...have you ever pressed them between the pages of a book? I think I would.
ReplyDeleteSo much happy people in your family Pamela...a good feeling knowing you're the matriarch isn't it?
Thank you, Anni. I haven't seen the Cooper's Hawk here before, but maybe he's been out there and I just didn't notice him, so he came up close and personal to let me know he's around. I will be watching for him more often now. No, I haven't pressed the roses into a book...but that is a nice idea. I used to always save the petals in a glass bowl, but we've moved so often that it became a problem to preserve. However, now I hope we are settled and maybe I will start doing that again. I never thought of myself as the "matriarch" before. I have an older sister...but it is our home they come to for holidays, etc., which kind of means that I must be the "one". I am certainly the matriarch of my own little family. I have two dear daughter in laws, but the one is in Maine and is the widow of our son Matthew, and sadly we don't get to see one another much anymore. The other lives here in town and is becoming more of a daughter to me, and I am so pleased to have her. God knew I needed a daughter.
DeleteThat precious red rose does qualify as a birthday gift from your son, how sweet. I like the glow from your fireplace, it makes the room cozy.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Terra. The rose bush always seems to know when to bloom. It was a gift to the memorial garden that we established right after our son passed away, and we brought it with us when we moved here last year, and even tho it is still in a pot, it keeps blooming right on time. Very special. I need to plant it in the ground. We enjoy our little fireplace during the fall and winter months. IT does make the house more cozy, even if we don't really need it for the heat here in Florida.
DeleteLove the Secret Garden gate! Was that once a headboard? Asking, on account I have one very similar languishing in the back yard; I've been trying to convince Tom to use it as a horizontal trellis. That fireplace looks so welcoming. I want one so very much!
ReplyDeleteYes, the gate was a headboard. I rescued it from our shed when we moved into our last house and established a "secret garden" and it became the gate. It came with us when we moved and is doing the same thing here. (You can check out the link in the sidebar for the Secret Garden and see what I wrote from there mostly at our last house). We have really enjoyed our little electric fireplace. You can use it with or without the heat, and the firelight is so peaceful and cozy. It really helps cozy up our living room during the long "winter nights". (in Florida...)!
DeleteLove all the pictures and ooh...that fireplace! LOVE IT! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cindy. We have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of that little fireplace. It really cozies up the place and we don't have to use the heat part either, which is a nice feature in Florida.
DeleteBeautiful, uplifting post. I just spent time at out local lake, enjoying the beauty there and praising God for who he is.So much beauty for my eyes to behold and my camera to capture.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you were able to get out and enjoy the beauty around you. We are blessed to have eyes to see these things that God has given us to enjoy! I will look forward to reading your post.
DeleteHow nice that Rose's sister is here for a visit! Glad their trip was a safe one! Sorry to see you are having erosion in your backyard! A retaining wall might be in your future... the you will need a dock for your kayak! Sending love & a hug!
ReplyDeleteYes, we know we will have to put up a retaining wall before our back yard washes away. It is just going to cost more $$ so we are trying to make do until we can figure out the best and most cost effective way to handle the problem. Yes, we will enjoy having Sherri here for a while. She is looking for a job and will probably be a "snowbird" here as she is making some transitions in her life. Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers.
DeleteSo thankful for the health of my family, Pamela, among many other things too numerous to count. So enjoyed your photos, as always - and that hawk? Wow! What a surprise! That's something to be thankful for, indeed.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Thank you, Martha. Isn't it wonderful how God sends us blessings when we least expect them? Even so, He can answer our prayers when we least expect Him to as well. We are so blessed to be His children.
DeleteThe rose in Matthew's Memorial Garden is a special gift, indeed. How exciting to see the hawk right outside your window. I'm thankful Rose and Benton had a safe trip. It is lovely to read in the comments above how she is like a daughter to you. You and Rose are blessed to have one another. It is raining here but no damage or flooding. Wishing you a nice evening. I love your fireplace.
ReplyDeleteWe are indeed blessed. Rose's mother passed away not too long after the "kids" got married (almost 3 years ago). She was pretty close to her mother and it was hard on her. So I am glad that we are able to be close. she is a real blessing to our family. Thank you...
DeleteI'm glad your sinus problem has cleared up. ('tis the season!!)
ReplyDeleteI'm thankful for having had a good day here at home when I didn't need to go anywhere at all. Got all the things on my To Do List crossed off and now can take it easy.
I love days when I really don't have to do anything at all except what I really want to do. You'd think since we are retired it would always be that way, but no so, as you well know! "Things happen"! Thank you for popping in to say hello!!
DeleteI am thankful for good blogging friend and nature pictures. I am thankful for safety from the storm and sweet Scripture to comfort.
ReplyDeleteOh, Sandy! So happy to hear from you! I've had you on my mind and heart and have been praying for you since we heard the storm headed in your direction. So thankful to know you are okay, praise God!! I hope you will share the details with us. I'll have to check your blog to see. Yay!
DeleteThat hawk is amazing! What a great gift that you got those pictures. Your fireplace looks so nice and cozy. I'm ready for fall and winter, bring it on!
ReplyDeleteOh, I know you are anxious to use your new fireplace! Have you used it yet? And yes, I was amazed to see that hawk on our porch rail! Totally surprised me. So glad I was here to get a picture!! Have a blessed weekend.
DeletePam, this is a beautiful post, as always. I'm thankful that you are feeling better. And the fireplace does seem to provide some ambiance (ones like you have are likely safer than the real thing).
ReplyDeleteLove and blessings!
Thank you, Kim. Yes, we enjoy our little electric fireplace. Not only is it safer, but so much less work and not as messy as the real thing! Just push a button and bingo! You have a lovely fire! push another button, and it will actually heat up your room! I love it! Thank you for visiting and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Are the leaves getting pretty up there yet? I bet they are.
