Okay, I am going to try and give this "new blogger" format another try, as I understand we will have to all migrate to it soon anyway. I did send them some comments after my last attempt, so let's see if they have listened and improved anything. First of all, I am going to try to post some pictures, because if you have known me for long, you know that is what I love to do.
You may have already seen this picture of my mother on my Facebook page this week. My cousin found it in some family photos and sent it to me. I had never seen this picture before, and I just love it.
Here's my mother, driving the tractor on our farm in PA., way back in the early 1950's I assume, because we left the farm to move to Florida in 1956. My mother really did not want to leave the farm. I heard her say many times, "I always wanted to marry a farmer, and I did. And then he decided to give up farming and move to Florida". She never really totally forgave my dad for that, although they lived happily ever after for about 64 years.

This next picture is of my paternal grandparents, when they were still living in PA., before they also retired and moved to Florida to live about 10 miles from us. Here again, my cousin sent me this picture and it was totally new to me. I love how they look so happy and even kind of playful in this picture. I had never seen my grandparents like this before. They always seemed so sedate and proper when we kids were around. This gives me a whole new insight into their loving relationship. (Even though they are dressed up in the "Sunday Best" for this picture).
My grandmother has been on my mind a lot lately, even though she's been gone to heaven since 1984.
If you recall reading the following story on this link:
https://pamelasopenwindow.blogspot.com/2010/06/speaking-for-silent-ones.html , then you will know the history of my grandmother's life. Briefly, she was adopted as a six month old infant, and all we knew about her background was her birth name, and the city where she was adopted. Well, I've been working on a special project here lately. Several years ago someone gave me a DNA test kit for Ancestry.com as a birthday gift. I held off sending it in because I just wasn't sure if that was something that I really wanted to do. But with this forced period of isolation I got restless, and decided to go ahead and send it in and renew my membership with Ancestry to see where the DNA test would lead me. Years ago, my son (who is also now in heaven) had started working on our family genealogy, and I had collaborated on it with him. Then when he passed away, I never got around to working on it anymore. Thankfully, Ancestry does keep all of your information intact even if you don't continue your membership. So when I decided to renew my membership and do the test kit, I was able to pick up where we left off without having to totally start over.
So, a couple of weeks ago the results of my DNA test came in, and I have been amazed to discover just how many cousins I have all over the country (and some around the world!). Of course, they are distant relations that I will most likely never really communicate with, but it is fun to see how far and wide a little thing like spitting into a small plastic tube can take you!
Anyway, one of the most exciting parts of this event is that I believe I may have found my grandmother's birth parents! Of course, they are long gone to heaven too...but my DNA has matched people from that same community and with the same last name as my grandmother's birth name, (which was actually her mother's maiden name), and also has made a very good case for who the father is as well. I am reaching out to the descendants who are close matches to my DNA to see if anyone could possibly have any information that would be able to verify my speculations. It's a long shot, but it is exciting and very amazing to think that I could be on the verge of solving a mystery that is 125 years old!! Of course, it could also open up a can of worms too, but after 125 years I don't think anyone will be too shocked to find out that there was a great Aunt or cousin or half sister that they could have been blessed to have known.

My Grandma

So that is my exciting news and what I've been doing in my "spare time" here lately. I know some of you have done genealogy before and maybe you have some good tips that will help me in this pursuit. I feel like my Grandma is smiling down and cheering me on. Of course, by now I am sure she has actually met her birth parents in heaven and maybe they are all cheering me on! (Don't try to get too theological on me here and tell me that doesn't happen. Just let me have my fun and let my imagination play a little bit).
I hope you are all having a blessed and wonderful week so far. I'll have more pond and bird pictures on another day. God bless you all and take care of yourselves. Most of all, be happy!
❤️
ReplyDeleteThank you, Becky, for these great pictures. As you can tell, I really love them both. They came at just the right time! It's like they are all smiling at me and cheering me on from those pictures! Thanks again!!! Love you.
DeleteHave fun researching this. hope you come up with some solid answers.
ReplyDeleteThank you. It is a fun new hobby, and especially now that I feel like I am actually accomplishing something with it!
DeleteHow interesting! Hope you are able to get some information. I renew my ancestry membership from time to time and do a little work. My dad was the real genealogist in my family and he's been gone for 13 years.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it interesting to see where all the different clues lead you? I am enjoying the pursuit, especially now that I have so many new connections to work with. Blessings to you today!
DeleteI'm glad you found some family connections. I know it is exciting. I've done some family genealogy too but most of mine was by hook or by crook as there is/are no good historical records in my family background. I hired a genealogist at one point. He hit a wall at the same point I did. I'm glad to have the information I do have. All the best with your research.
ReplyDeleteI know I had hit a brick wall in regards to my grandmother's heritage until I did this DNA test, and then I was amazed at how it seemed to zoom right in on these relatives I never knew existed. Really fascinating how that DNA stuff works!! It is fun to do the research and to imagine just how those people lived and loved and worked. I hope you have a blessed and wonderful day.
DeleteThese are precious photos. Please keep us updated on your research.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I will report when I feel like I have a true story to tell. It may read like a mystery novel, however! Have a blessed day my friend.
DeleteLove your pictures; our past encourages our future. I have never researched my family but one of my daughters has and it is interesting for sure.
ReplyDeleteIt is fascinating to know that these people were just like us, only living in a time that was probably much more difficult to exist...no modern conveniences, etc., but they loved and laughed and cried and did all the things we do today.
DeleteOh, wow, Pamela, this is exciting! You've made me want to try this, too, just so I can know and share with the grandchildren one day. Also, these photos are wonderful - seems like the new blogger version is cooperating. I'll have to give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
I am finding it to be very interesting and eye-opening. Someday I will share more details, when things are a little more verified. As far as the new blogger goes, I am still having issues with putting "labels" on the post, posting the post, and they only allow you to line up one picture at a time. I don't like those changes at all. It is not more user friendly at all. Other than that it's just fine! LOL!!!
DeleteThe Ancestry DNA has been so much fun for Joe and me! Ancestry is amazing. Just this last week I have been messaging with a 4th cousin who lives in Washington state, is in his 80s, and he gave me three more generations for my family tree that I didn't have. Keep us posted on your progress! I really love genealogy!
ReplyDeleteOh that is wonderful, Terri! I hope some of my "relations" will get back with me. They may think I am crazy claiming that my grandmother was born of one of their distant relatives...but it's worth a try. I am hoping I will find someone who may actually have a picture of these people so I can see if my grandmother looked like any of them. Thank you for the encouragement.
DeleteGenealogy is a wonderful thing. After I retired I researched my family and found so many wonderful people along the way. Mr D and I would travel to old cemeteries and libraries seeking info to fill the pages. We enjoyed it so much. That was over 20 years ago and I need to get busy on some updates. Hope your genealogy journey opens many lovely and interesting doors. God Bless - btw, enjoyed the pictures.
ReplyDeleteHave you done the DNA test too? I am amazed at what it has uncovered. I have even discovered that I have a first cousin that no one knew about. I haven't contacted him yet, because I don't know if the rest of his "family" knows he exists and I don't want to stir up something. But that was pretty fascinating to discover!! You just never know what might turn up. Who knows, you and I might be related too! LOL. God bless you too, and have a great week.
DeleteLove seeing these pics from the past and hearing about your DNA research! I never knew any of my grandparents...my mom & dad were in their 40s when I was born and they had already passed on. I see others having such sweet memories of their grandmas and sometimes it makes me a bit sad. Your blog still looks great...is the new bloggers supposed to make it look different? I am holding off on doing it until I have to...but when I read the notice on Blogger, I understood it automatically defaulted to the new at the end of June but we still have the option of using the old one...may be I misunderstood. I have always been afraid to mess with a new format! Have a blessed day!
ReplyDeleteDear sweet Debby, I am just seeing this comment today. I am sorry that you never were able to know your Grandparents here in this life...thank the Lord for heaven, where we may all have some wonderful reunions and happy surprises! I've been thinking about you and praying for you. Hoping you are doing well during this process you are going through. May God give you grace and strength for each new day.
DeleteHow interesting Pam. It's insightful to learn about our heritage.
ReplyDeleteI am just seeing this comment today, Kim. Sorry...yes it is insightful. I hope to do an update on this story in the near future. So stay tuned.
DeleteI hope two things:
ReplyDelete1. That you finally uncover the story.
and
2. If it is too sad, I hope you don't.
It's been so many years, though, even a sad story may be...well...you never know. It is probably that her Mother was young, fell in love, and then did not marry the father. But it is heartbreaking to think that your Grandmother was given up at 6 months of age. Her mother must have been devastated.
I am just now seeing this comment, Sandi. I will update you on the story in a future post...Still working on the details, but I think it has a happy ending! Thank you for your thoughts about it...and your insights. I may have to write a little bit of "fiction" to make the story all come together, but it will mostly be non-fiction and/or historical fiction. Whatever, I am happy my grandmother existed and became who she was or I would not be here today!
