Birds, Bugs, and Summertime

Here it is Thursday evening already...I cannot keep up with the days anymore. I think I will have to start making and X on each day of the calendar so I can keep up with the date. Does anyone else have this problem? Be honest!  I know I can't be the only one!  I can't believe we are just a little over a week away from the 4th of July! We haven't made any plans yet for that day. Have you? I wonder what people will be able to do this year. It certainly is a different time these days...

We are into summer full swing...hot humid days, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and daylight almost until bedtime! I find myself waking up earlier because the sun is rising...and then going to bed later because the sun just doesn't seem to set.  But we are thankful for the rhythm of each day....thankful to be alive and well and praising God for His protection from the storms of "life".

Since tomorrow is Friday, I might as well show you whatever photos I have managed to take this week. Not a lot going on, but then again...God's creation is always active all around us...we just need to be observant!

This Red Shouldered Hawk was sitting up on the top of the biggest pine tree, minding his own business, and that Blue Jay kept pestering him, flying all around and making lots of noise because he didn't want him there.  After quite a few minutes of this, the hawk finally had enough and flew away. Don't you sometimes wish you could just fly away from all the noise of this world?

One evening this week we had a pretty severe thunderstorm right about suppertime. So we had to wait awhile to go take our evening walk.  I'm glad we did, as we arrived just in time to see this young deer coming out of the woods...

And actually there were two of them! This is the other, which I believe is the mother to the younger one above.
She gave me a good look before she ran on into the woods in search of her youngster.

I saw this "Florida Deep Digger Scarab Beetle" crossing the road this morning. I thought he was pretty interesting. He stopped dead in his tracks and waited on me to examine him and take his picture, and then he went on his way. Pretty cool!
Seeing that this beetle is called a "Scarab Beetle" reminded me of my paternal grandmother's "Scarab Bracelet" that I was given after her death.  Have you ever seen one of these before?  Each of the stones has a "Scarab" design etched into it on the top:

and then the back side is flat, but has these special little x's or stars etched into the stone.
Here is some information about the "meaning of a Scarab Bracelet":

"In ancient Egyptian religion the scarab was also a symbol of immortality, resurrection, transformation and protection much used in funerary art. The life of the scarab beetle revolved around the dung balls that the beetles consumed, laid their eggs in, and fed their young represented a cycle of rebirth."

"Amulets in the form of scarab beetles were very popular in Ancient Egypt from 2,000 BC onwards; soldiers often wore scarab beetles into battle as the insects were thought to have supernatural powers of protection against enemies."

Interesting, huh?

I don't think my grandmother used her scarab bracelet for any kind of "good luck", as she was a Christian woman and certainly not superstitious. This was popular jewelry back in the 1950's, which is when I think she may have received this bracelet. I remember her wearing it a lot, and I was very pleased to receive it in memory of her.  Interesting...this is the same grandmother that I am doing so much genealogical research on right now.  Remember me telling you about her HERE? As an update, I am making very good progress and believe I am truly zeroing in on who her birth parents were. I have also contacted the authorities in the location where she was adopted and have requested  to have her adoption file opened if at all possible.  There are some genetic issues in our extended family that are being researched and this information could be very helpful for some of our family members. So please say a little prayer with me that they will consider this request. You would think that after 125 years it wouldn't be such an issue, but apparently it is.

Back to nature...This cute tiny little dragonfly was flying around the edge of the pond this afternoon.
"As Nymphs, the dragonflies eat mosquito larvae, other aquatic insects and worms, and for a little variety even small aquatic vertebrates like tadpoles and small fish. ... The adult dragonfly likes to eat gnats, mayflies, flies, mosquitoes and other small flying insects. They sometimes eat butterflies, moths and bees too."

So these little guys are eating mosquito larvae around the pond, and I say, "Be my guest! Eat all the mosquito larvae you can!"  The dragonflies are our friends!

Here is a Psalm for us to meditate upon as we ponder life these days:

Psalm 61
"A Psalm of David"
"1.  Hear my cry, O God;
attend to my prayer.
2.  From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3.  For You have been a shelter for me,
A strong tower from the enemy.
4.  I will abide in Your tabernacle forever;
I will trust in the shelter of your wings.
5.  For You, O God, have heard my vows;
You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name.
6.  You will prolong the king's life,
His years as many generations.
7.  He shall abide before God forever.
Oh prepare mercy and truth,
which may preserve him!
8.  So I will sing praise to Your name forever,
that I may daily perform my vows."

Have a blessed and beautiful day my friends.

    1. Thank you, Terri. I actually only recently rediscovered it in my old jewelry box that was buried in a box in a closet. So I cleaned it really well, and I hope to wear it when we go back to church. It's a little bulky to wear all the time, but I feel like it is a "link" back to her especially now that I am working on this research into her family history so much. I feel like she is cheering me on to get it done!!

  2. Pam, I so rarely run across your posts on Facebook, but today, it showed up. Hooray! Yes, I will pray that your ancestry search goes well, and that you can find out more about your grandmother's biological family. Knowing those things brings a peaceful closure to ancestral uncertainty. And your photos? Wonderful as always! I love the info you shared about the dragonfly. Glad to know that they eat those pesky mosquitoes! They are the summertime scourge, especially in the hot, humid climate of Florida.
    Blessings to you!

    1. I am enjoying the search on Ancestry, esp. since I had my DNA tested and have discovered so many people that I would never have known about otherwise. It really is an amazing tool! I just wish Grandma could be here to be in on the discovery...but she probably already has met her family in heaven and knows all about them first hand! And yes, the dragonflies are our friends!

  3. I will fully admit to not knowing what day it is lately. It annoys my husband who is still working and he takes it as sign of retirement that he has not yet reached:) The last year I taught, I put x's on the calendar. I continued for the remainder of that summer, but along about fall I thought to myself I didn't want to count the days away anymore. HOWEVER, I seriously just had that thought the other day because I completely forgot what day it was and took the dog to the vet on the day before. The sweet little girl came out and said, Mrs. Palmer, your appointment is tomorrow. All day long I had thought it was one day instead of the other. I don't know what that says about me:)
    Love the nature pictures always because it is truly so interesting.
    I got one of those bracelets in 3rd grade from a cute little boy in the Christmas gift exchange. I was totally smitten.

    1. Please don't feel badly about forgetting the days...apparently we are in good company! My cousin saw this post and told me that she looks at her cell phone to tell the date. I had to think about that a while. I look at it for the time, but never thought about the date, but it does have a calendar on it and today's date is always on top. Not so sure about the day of the week, however! Oh my! That little boy must have really liked you a lot to give you such a nice bracelet! Yes, I would have been "smitten" as well! Have a good day! It's Friday now!!

  4. I have to double check to make sure I have the right day and date almost every day. My husband is the same way now, so I can't check with him. I know it is because he now works from home and we don't have a schedule of going anywhere now days to keep track of.

    i very much enjoyed seeing and
    about your grandmother's scarab bracelet. It is lovely, and so interesting. I found the little stars engraved on the back of them to be interesting. I had an inexpensive scarab bracelet when I was a young girl, but I have no idea where it is now.

    When I was a little girl my Dad used to call the big dragonflies we would see out along the Mississippi River Snake Doctors. My child's mind could so imagine them flying in to take care of all of the various snakes all along the banks of the river. I don't know where Dad got that name for what everyone else calls dragon flies.

    1. Welcome to my blog today, Susie! Thank you for visiting! That is interesting that your Dad called the dragonflies "Snake Doctors". I can imagine wondering and thinking just like you, trying to figure out what they do for the snakes! Funny. I'm sure he heard it somewhere too. I'm just glad they are here on our pond, eating up the mosquitoes! That is just fine with me!! They can have the snakes too, if they could figure that out! LOL.

    1. Yay! It's Friday! So you must be off today! I hope you will do something fun, speaking of which, the 4th of July is coming right up! We need to talk, sister!! As for the bracelet, I can see it on Grandma's arm to this day. I think she wore it a lot. It has a little guard chain on it to keep it from falling open and getting lost too. It's a very nice bracelet, and I feel like it is another "link" to getting closer to solving the mysteries regarding her family tree! Talk to you later sis!! Love you.

  6. Those bracelets were very popular a while back and many girls opened the links and inserted a watch into them. That was really nice looking. As a little girl I liked what the teen girls were doing with them. Your bracelet is particularly lovely.
    I enjoyed the photos of the deer quite a lot.

    1. The bracelet would make a lovely watch bracelet! That's a neat idea! I am very pleased to have this "link" back to my grandmother. I feel so connected to her right now as I work on this genealogy regarding her family tree almost every day! It's fascinating to discover new "family" we never knew existed! Regarding the deer, I was so happy to see them venturing out of the woods after the storm! They were just like us!

  7. Funny about the blue jay pestering the hawk! Reminds me of my little dog growling at the BIG dogs on our street! lol I do remember the bracelets. You are blessed to have this keepsake from your grandmother. The deer and dragonfly photos are beautiful.

    1. Yes, those Blue Jays will pester the hawk constantly until he flies away. They are trying to keep him away from their youngsters. We have had many young blue jays and cardinals in the yard and at the feeders here lately...so I can imagine they would be quite concerned to have that hawk lingering nearby. Yes, I am thankful to have this "link" to my grandmother through her bracelet. I feel so connected to her right now as I work on her birth family tree almost every day lately. It is fascinating to discover so many people we never knew existed that we are actually related to! Thank you for visiting today. I am so glad you are "back".

  8. You certainly have some beautiful photos of nature today Pamela. I know living so close to wildlife would make me very happy and so many photo ops too. As long as big, scary animal didn't come my way I'd be fine. We have a lot of scary wildlife in the bush where I live so I never want to get close to the animals, he he. I learned something about Scarab today which I had never heard about. I also don't think I've ever seen a bracelet like the one your grandmother and now you own. It is quite beautiful. I wish you all the best in your research and pray you get the information you need.

    1. Just always remember Who is with you when you must go out into the "bush", and He will never leave you nor forsake you, so you are safe in His care! praise God! I am not sure of the history of my grandmother's bracelet...I am assuming it is something my grandfather gave her. I just remember her wearing it a lot and I was so honored to receive it from her estate. It is like a "link" to her as I do this research in search of her family. Thank you for your kind words!!

  9. I love your photos today as always. Those dragonfly photos are amazing! So is the hawk in the first picture. I can just imagine that blue jay hollering at him. They are such noisy and demanding birds. I've never seen a scarab bracelet, but that is beautiful.

    1. Thank you, Cathy. Yes, those blue jays are quite noisy, but so is the hawk! They kind try to see who can outdo the other in the noise department, I think! LOL. Thank you for your kind words today. Hope you have a blessed day.

    1. Thank you, Linda. Yes, I think calendars are definitely making a "comeback" during these days of confinement. We all seem to be losing our perspective on dates and time, etc. Time keeps marching on regardless of whether or not we can keep track of it! LOL. have a blessed and wonderful day today.

  11. One way I try to remember what day it is is to remember that our newspaper doesn't publish on Tuesdays or Sundays. Another way is to remember if I have an appointment or a meeting. I put that information in my smartphone calendar. The day before and the day of my appointment. A message shows up on my lockscreen. It's a big help to this old lady. Peace and blessings to you and yours.

    1. We don't get a daily newspaper here. There is one available, but I'm not sure if it prints every day or not. I only need newspapers when we are moving so I can use them for packing. LOL. The grocery ads get sent to us free so that is all I really care about anyway. Yes, I try to remember to put my appts. in my phone calendar too. That is a big help to have that reminder. yes, these things do help us "old ladies". LOL. Peace and blessings to you and yours as well.

  12. Pam, I enjoyed this post. It's so fun to see photos of God's creation. The bracelet is beautiful! I don't recall having seen one before--my mom graduated from high school in 1953, so she may have seen them.

    Yes, I can struggle with the day and date, especially when the weather is super bad in the winter and it's not wise for me to venture out or during the time we're currently experiencing. It helps that I have some devices that have the correct day/date.

    I have no plans for July 4; I can't remember the last time I did something on the 4th. Most things around here are canceled due to the virus. However, my community is having fireworks July 3 (I don't plan to go, because driving after dark is challenging for me; my body also doesn't do well with heat and humidity.)

    Love and blessings!

    1. I'm sure your mother probably saw these bracelets back in the 50's. They seem to have been very popular then. I expect many cities have cancelled their 4th of July celebrations. That is so sad...so many things have been cancelled this year. I try not to think about it too much as it becomes depressing. We just keep moving along doing the best we can with what we can. Has your church started back yet? We are supposed to July 5th, but that is still up in the air with the current spike in the virus positive test results. Praying for God to intervene in this pandemic and help us get back to "normal"...in a lot of areas. Praying for you too. (((hugs)))
