Tuesday 4 Summertime and The Living Is Easy

Sorry I'm a bit late to the "party" today. Got busy with other things and totally forgot it was Tuesday already!  I haven't written anything in a few days, so before you think I've flown the coop I'd better write something somewhat sensible...LOL.  So here goes with the Tuesday 4 for today...

♬ ♫ Summertime and the Living is Easy. ♩ ♪

Hey.. you're back! Welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 where we just want you to meet new folks and get to know the ones you already know a bit better. Besides, it gives you something to blog about too.

This week let's talk about Summertime.

1. What gave you the most fun in summer as a kid or as an adult?
Seems like just last week I was telling you HERE about my summer vacations as a child and our family camping trips through the mountains on our way to Ohio and back.  But in addition to that annual trek north, I also did some other fun things more locally throughout the rest of the summer. Sadly I don't seem to have any pictures of this special time, but every summer I would go spend at least a week with my other Aunt and Uncle and cousins who lived on Neptune Beach, Florida. (near Jacksonville).  My cousins were all younger than I was, so I was kind of like the big sister/baby sitter for the two boys while my Aunt Ruthie was busy with the the baby, 'Linda'.  We spent many hours going to the beach, which was right down the street from their house, and also going to the movie matinee' for kids whenever they had it...always fun with games and prizes and good movies.  We hunted for sharks' teeth on the beach, and I still have a nice little collection of them:
It was a happy time for me as I was the baby of our family and didn't have any little brothers or sisters to play with. Sometimes my other cousin Becky also went with me, so we had a great time. Sadly, all of my Aunt Ruthie's family are gone now. She developed Early Onset Alzheimer's disease and died in her early sixties after a long battle with it. Then, one by one each of her three children also developed this tragic disease and succumbed to it in their late 40's or 50's. My Uncle had to watch each member of his family pass away long before their time. He lived to be in his 80's. It truly was heart breaking.  But I have such good memories of those summers spent with them as a child, when life was much simpler and no such horrid future in sight.

Another fun time in the summer was our school's summer recreation program.  Every weekday during a few weeks in the summer we would gather at the school and get on buses to go to different swimming places for the day.  Our area of Florida has many natural springs, where the water is crystal clear and very cold, but so refreshing on a hot summer day.  We would go to places like Alexander Springs, Rock Springs,  and Juniper Springs. Then we also would sometimes go to some of the municipal swimming pools.  I remember that we had to have a "buddy", and we would line up with our buddy hand in hand to be counted before going in the water or when coming out. The rules were very strict and our bus driver lady was also a life guard and swimming teacher, so she kept a very close watch over us. When she blew her whistle, we had better come out of that water and make sure we had our buddy with us and line up together. Again, this was when life was so much simpler and more carefree. I look back and realize that we were truly blessed to have such experiences and also I don't recall anyone ever getting seriously hurt or any terrible calamities befalling us.  God was surely watching over us.

Just an example of the beauty of Alexander Springs... (not my picture)

Perfect place to cool off on a hot summer day!

2. Does summer heat get to you? How do you cope?
Well, yes, here in Florida the summer heat will really get to you, especially if your air conditioner goes out on you at 5:00 in the evening when the temperature is 95 degrees outside.  That's what happened to us just last night!  Actually at about 5 minutes before 5:00 I felt warm air blowing from the AC and looked at the thermostat. It said 81 when it was supposed to be 76.  I knew we were in trouble, as it would continue to rise. I called our trusted AC repairman on their cell phone, praying they would answer the call at so close to closing time. Yes! Thankfully they work out of their home as well as they have their cell phones with them all the time. I was told they had one more stop to make and then they would be at our house. Sure enough, they arrived here around 6:30 p.m., and by 7:00 p.m. we had a new fan motor installed and the AC was running perfectly!  Praise God!!! That was truly a blessing!! It pays to know a good AC repairman, who is not only skilled, but honest and has reasonable prices, and is willing to go the extra mile to keep their customers "cool".

However, I grew up in Florida at a time when no one had air conditioning. Not our schools, or our churches, or businesses, or cars, or any place anywhere! And it was just as hot back then as it is now, but for some reason we didn't realize it so much because we'd never known anything different! Our homes and schools were built with big windows that we'd open wide, and we had plenty of fans.  We wore as little as modestly possible in the summer time, and I was always barefoot. We drank koolaid that we made from those little packets and had to add our own sugar. We made our own popsicles with Koolaid in the tupperware popsicle containers.  We ate watermelon and drank water from the garden hose. We sprayed ourselves with that water any chance we could. (making sure it was cooled off first, of course). We played outside all day and I was freckled all over with a pink sunburn and bright red hair.

Here's my sister Doris (at the sink) and I  washing/drying dishes on a summer night. You can see we are barefoot and dressed as cool as we can.  Again, those were simpler times and happy days, even if I didn't really like having to do the dishes...I am looking at the pan I am holding. It is one of my mother's Revere Ware pots.

I believe I still have that pot today...that pot has to be at least 70 years old or more...and still keeps working.  They sure don't make things like they used to...

Even though I have a lot of happy memories from summertime before we had air conditioning, I am very thankful to have it today, and wouldn't want to go back to living without it.

3. Do you have summertime foods and drinks you really enjoy eating? Does your menu change in summer?
We do eat a lot more salads and fresh fruits in the summer, like cantaloupe and watermelon and strawberries and blueberries, and peaches when we can get good ones from a farm stand.  We like to grill chicken and hamburgers, and have fresh corn on the cob when it really is fresh. We drink iced tea here year round. I love fresh homemade lemonade, but haven't had any in ages. I don't drink soft drinks but once in a while I love a Root beer float. We eat ice cream, and on the 4th of July our family tradition  has always been to make homemade ice cream the old fashioned way, with a hand crank.  However, nowadays we cheat with an electric crank.  My Dad would NOT approve...LOL.   Here's the last time I cranked the ice cream maker at a family reunion:

4. Do you enjoy sitting outside or on the porch in summertime? How about some photos of where you enjoy being in summer.

Sadly, it is too hot here to sit outside in the summer.  We do most of our porch sitting in the fall/winter/spring.  In the summer I enjoy being inside in the air conditioning, but just last week hubby and I went to our favorite place for lunch and it was pleasant enough to sit on the deck by the river under a tree and eat our meal:

I know you already saw these pictures last week, but these are the most recent I have that answers the question.

But when I can, I enjoy sitting on our own porch, watching the birds out on Still Waters Pond:

I believe someone thinks it is time to ring the dinner bell! LOL.

I also love to sit in the "Secret Memorial Garden" when it is cooler and the mosquitoes aren't biting:

(The Crane family loves bird seed that they can find on the ground under the bird feeders)

And here is the most recent view of the Bluebird house...one of the babies asking for more food, please, but Mama and Papa Bluebird have been trying to coax the babies out of the nest all week long by bringing food and then taking it back away from them to try and get them to follow. I hope they hurry and leave the nest because today, just as I was writing this post, a big mean old crow flew to the door of the birdhouse and stuck his ugly face in there to try and get one of those babies! I saw Mama and Papa Bluebird flying at him and trying to chase him away, and I also ran to the door and started yelling at him. I sure hope and pray those babies make it out safely and on to better and happier places.

I think he wishes they had air conditioning in there. That's how I looked last night when our AC went out. I was gasping for cooler air and praying for it to get fixed right away, and thankfully my prayers were answered immediately. It would be nice if all our prayers could be answered so quickly.

I think I will close this post with a favorite passage about waiting on the Lord:

28 "Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the Lord,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
31 But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint."
Isaiah 40: 28-31

Again, our thanks to Annie for posting these questions each week. I hope you will join in the party with your own answers!  I'm happy for the "good old summertime", but truth be known, I can't wait for fall to get here with some cooler temperatures and porch sitting time again!

  1. Your answer to #2 is so true from the goodness of a good A/C guy to living here without air. How did we do it? I know we did and drank koolaid and everything you said in that paragraph I could have written. Yes, the time for porch sitting is gone for some months. It has been so humid this week. Whew! We will survive with fresh fruit especially watermelon.

    1. Yes, it sounds like you experienced the same kind of childhood that I did. Those were happy days. We were carefree and full of energy and fun. I'm glad we were able to enjoy those days while they lasted. Kids today really don't have the kind of freedom we had in the summertime (or anytime). It's sad. But it's a different world out there now. It has been very hot and humid this week. Oh, I think I need to go look for a good watermelon today. LOL. Take care my friend.

  2. I still have and use my mother's Revere Ware pots and pans. I liked summer in Utah because no matter how hot it got the humidity was always extremely low and it was easier to take than the hot humid days.

    1. Aren't those RW pots the best? I have several others too, my mother's and a few that I have picked up here and there in different sizes. They sure do beat all these new kinds of pots and pans that are made of cheap aluminum. I've never been to Utah or out west to experience their low humidity summers. I would like to at least visit. Humidity is what makes it feel so much hotter here. If I go outside to water my plants I have to come back inside and take a shower! Yeah, I'm a fall, winter, spring kind of gal for sure!

  3. Your summers were great, lots of vacations to enjoy. We always traveled because of my Dad's work, seemed like we were always on vacation, lol We haven't had homemade ice cream in so long, we love it so I don't know why. Oh well, we love Blue Bell too. It was so good visiting with you today, sending you a ((hug)) across the miles.

    1. Oh, we love Blue Bell ice cream too, and that is much simpler than trying to make our own. We try to do the homemade thing for the 4th of July, and that is a big event, but a lot of work, so we save it for special occasions like that! I'm so happy you are back to blogging! I've missed you!!!

  4. I enjoyed reading all your answers. I sure do miss the days of my childhood at times when life was seemingly much more innocent and simple pleasures abounded. It certainly sounds like you had a wonderful childhood and spent your summers in a perfectly good way. I am with you on the air conditioning. I've never been good in heat and especially with humidity and heat. Where I grew up one never needed air con and hardly ever needed a fan. In those days summers were very short and the actual hot weather was only 2 weeks long. After that the sun still shone but when there was a breeze it already had a chill in it. Your scenes beside the pond and at the restaurant look lovely. Do you get any mosquitoes or small flies at the waterfront or are they mostly kept at bay through spraying?

    1. Good Morning, Penny. So wonderful to hear from you. To answer your question, yes we do get mosquitoes this time of year, mostly in the evening. We don't do any spraying here as they aren't really that bad and we just stay inside in the evenings. There's another biting fly that I really do not like, the "deer fly". It is a yellow fly that buzzes around your legs and loves to bite. I am bothered more my them than the mosquitoes, so if I need to go outside for very long I do spray my legs with repellant first. Otherwise I have ugly red itchy welts when I come back inside. But again, they are mostly a summer thing, and when the weather starts to change again in the fall they go away, thankfully! My hubby is very susceptible to these bug bites, so we really try to avoid being outside once the sun goes down. It's too hot and muggy out there anyway. Fall and winter and spring are more our seasons to enjoy here in Florida. Thank you for visiting. I saw your pretty flower picture on FB. Looks like your garden is growing! Enjoy your summer!!!

  5. I can't imagine living in Florida without air conditioning! Although here in TN, it's no cooler so I stay inside where it's cool. The last time I had home made ice cream was when I was a child at my aunt and uncle's farm. I remember the brain freeze!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh yes, the "brain freeze" is real and painful! I've certainly experienced that many times. You'd think I'd learn! LOL. But the benefit of having such delicious real homemade ice cream makes you forget about the pain. Kind of like having a baby! LOL. Well, maybe not. It's funny that we lived in Florida w/o AC and yet we just went on with life like it was no big deal. Why? Because we didn't know anything different! Now we are so "conditioned" to living with the AC we think we are dying if we have to do without. Pretty crazy, but so true. It's just all about what we are used to. I hope you are staying cool as a cucumber where you are!! Thanks for visiting!

  6. What a fab childhood you enjoyed, Pam! I've never heard of those Springs, but it looks beautiful ... like something you'd see in the Caribbean. Yep, I remember those Kool-Ade packets ... agonizing (lol) what flavor to make. Our family either didn't know about the Tupperware popsicle things ... or was too scotch to buy. Oh wow. I'm so glad your A/C issue was corrected before too much time had passed. That's one of my greatest fears, on account I loathe the heat so much. Silly, isn't it? How on earth did our parents (and theirs) exist without it?! Prayers for the bluebird babies to take SAFE flight!

    1. Thank you, Myra. I'm still concerned about these baby bluebirds. That big old crow keeps poking his head in there and Mama and Daddy come screeching away at him...I sure hope he isn't successful in his attempts...I have to remind myself it is nature and I can't control what happens...but if I can, I will! Oh, I am sorry you never got to make popsicles with kool aid. They sure were good. We also made them with orange juice too. Those were more "healthy" treats. I wish I still had those things. I used them for my kids too, but they are long gone now. Re: A/C. My grandparents retired to Florida in the late 50's when we moved down here too, and they never did get air conditioning. I remember my grandmother with her little fans and a hand towel to wipe the perspiration away. We offered to install a window unit ac, but they didn't want it. They just preferred to "sweat it out". LOL.

  7. I still use my old Revere Ware pans and love them!! Your childhood memories are similar to mine, even though we grew up waaayy far away from each other! I love the cranes and that they visit your pond and garden! Sorry to be late getting here but I enjoyed your Tuesday 4 on Wednesday!! xo

    1. Were those your own Rever ware pans or did they belong to your mother? I guess you can still buy them, but they are so expensive. I'm glad they last forever. Yes, we grew up in different places, but we both have "Ohio" roots. My mother was raised in Ohio and we spent a lot of time there on vacations. So our "values" were very similar. Plus, childhood in the 50's-60's was just so much better everywhere. We were blessed to be of that generation.

  8. That photo of you and your mom in the kitchen - I have one very similar of my mom and me. Probably about the same age.

The mornings here are still cool - so we can sit on the patio until the morning sun starts glaring in. The heat of the day here is about 5pm - so far we are having a cool start which I am liking. Supposed to be 99 today but it's only 92.

I enjoyed your post, like always.

    1. Thank you, Debby. Actually that is my sister and me in the kitchen doing the dishes. Mom cooked the meals, and we did the dishes. She worked every day in an office and was ready to relax a bit after supper, although there was always something to do. I honestly don't know how she did it all. Oh, it was up to 99 here last evening. We went to go take a walk and decided to take a ride instead. It was just too hot for walking. Mornings aren't much better as it is so humid on top of the heat. This is a better time to do indoor projects or go swimming if you have a place to go. I don't, but I guess if I wanted to badly enough I could find a place. LOL. Have a blessed day today.

  9. wow what a great childhood. I hope the baby bluebirds get out safely and that mean old crow leaves them alone. I still drink koolaid - alot of the sugar. So glad you got your ac fixed quickly. I could not do without ac due to heart issues and meds that I take. I hope your week is going well. Isaiah 40:31 is my alltime favorite and go to verse, in fact I did a bible journal on it recently. have a new post up

    1. Thank you, Gina. I keep thinking the baby bluebirds will fledge any time now, but they seem to like being in the house where they are safe. I would think they are getting too warm in there now, however If I were them I'd want to fly and be free. I do pray they will be safe. I saw your post with the cute kitty. Love that picture and the verse you shared as well. Hope you are doing well. It is very hot right now. Stay cool.

  10. It's definitely too hot to sit outside this week...even if you're barefoot! I drove out to the sunflower farm again and I saw a papa, mama and two baby Sandhills! I saw them in the field and didn't get a photo but I ooohed and ahhhed and thought of you! Stay cool!

    1. Yes, it is definitely too hot. Are you still trying to hike every day? We went out last night around 6:00 to take our walk, and it was 99 degrees, so we took a ride instead. Definitely too hot for me right now. Oh, I love that you thought of me when you saw the baby Sandhill Cranes. They are so much fun to watch. Ours is flying now. I haven't been able to get a picture of him flying because they always take me by surprise when they come flying in for a landing. I need to be paying more attention. But they still come home to roost each evening on the marsh island on the pond. I guess it's cooler out there for them too! Have a blessed and wonderful cool day.

  11. Summertime is interesting around here. We have window AC units and pedistal fans. Back in the day, my parents had a window fan that had a reverse on it. In the daytime, it took the hot air out and, at night, it brought the cooler air inside.

This week in Idiana, we have almost set records with upper 90's temperatures. One night this week, I went out to roll up the windows in our car.The car thermometer showed 85 degrees. It didn't seem to cool down much through the night.

I haven't sat on my front porch this year, I need to find a way to clear it of the extra "stuff" that has accumulated over the winter. I prefer to sit out there when the temps are in the 70's. Peace and Blessings to you and yours.

  12. Even though I do not participate in this weekly event, it was great to read about your summertime experiences growing up, Pamela. Hot summer weather is one of the reasons why we decided to relocate from our former home on the Va eastern shore. We always enjoyed sitting outside on our front porch except for the mosquitoes on very warm summer eves. I didn't have any Revere Ware, but can remember Farberware pots which were my first ones. I hope the baby bluebirds do leave home before predators try to return.
