Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!

Friday Foto Friends...Chia Pets, Anyone?
Who remembers these? Or maybe you have one or have had one? I never have had one...
but now...
When I went to see the Dr. the other day he told me to start eating Chia Seeds. He said they would be good for what ails me. In moderation, of course...sprinkled on yogurt or cereal or pudding or in a smoothie. But all I could think of was would I turn into one of these?
Or any of these?
Has anyone else had any experience with eating chia seeds? Did you suddenly sprout green hair? Frankly, I am a bit concerned...
Maybe some of you could join me and we could become the "Golden Girls Chia Pets"
LOL.
Just a little silly humor today. Seriously, if you have had any experience with eating Chia Seeds, I'd love to hear your ideas and thoughts and recipes. I'm not really into this whole eating seeds kind of thing, but if it helps keep things running like clockwork, it might be worth it.
Meanwhile, before I start sprouting green hair, let's get serious.
There's really nothing new to report. The baby bluebirds are still apparently in the birdhouse. They just aren't quite ready yet to make their debut into the big world beyond. Can't say as I blame them. There are times when we all would rather not venture out into the big world beyond our doorsteps.
On the other hand, the Sand Hill Crane Family seems to have left the "nest" again, off wandering around the countryside. I believe "Colt" is now able to fly, so perhaps they are letting him test his wings a bit.
Here are some selected verses from Psalm 27 that are comforting when we find ourselves becoming fearful in the face of so many foes out there in the world:
Psalm 27:1-3, 11-14
"1 The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked came against me
To eat up my flesh,
My enemies and foes,
They stumbled and fell.
3 Though an army may encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear;
Though war may rise against me,
In this I will be confident."
"11 Teach me Your way, O Lord,
And lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies.
12 Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries;
For false witnesses have risen against me,
And such as breathe out violence.
13 I would have lost heart, unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.
14 Wait on the Lord;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord!"
Now, back to watching for those green hairs to start sprouting...LOL. Have a blessed and peaceful day my friends.

So you're not going to try it? My dear mother-in-law gifted me with a chia pet circa Christmas 198? I thought he was hideous, but I did not mind the chia sprouts on my salad. I don't know what ultimately happened to my hideous chia pet, but I haven't seen him for years. Thankfully, I have a number of lovely gifts from my mother-in-law to remember her by.
ReplyDeleteLOL. That sounds like something my mother in law would do. One year she gave the boys some of that silly puddy like stuff in a jar that if you put your fingers down in the jar and pull them out it sounds like someone is passing gas (I'm being polite here). It was hilarious. She thought that was great. We did have a lot of fun with her, and yes, she also gave me some wonderful gifts...most of all, her son. I am very thankful for my mother in law. She was quite a character, but a very lovable one.
DeleteI have never owned a chia pet, always wanted one, but did not want the kitties eating it. One day when you're not expecting those babies will come out, I can't wait to see them. Thank you for always stopping by my place. Love the bible verses today one of my favorites is Isaiah 40:31 But thos who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall walk and not faint. ( Again when we wait on the LORD, he will make all things possible)
ReplyDeleteIsaiah 40:31 is one of my most favorite verses ever. Very comforting. Yes, waiting on the Lord is the key to many things in life. He knows our needs and He will answer in due time. Re: the bluebirds, I hope I get to see them leave the nest. They tend to do it when we aren't looking. But I keep trying to watch, but then I get busy. So we shall see what happens. I know they will be fine whether I get to see them or not, but still... LOL. Have a great weekend my friend.
DeleteMy grandmother got our son a Chia Pet for Christmas one year. I tried to help him grow the green stuff. Hubby decided it was drawing bugs. So the thing went bye-bye.
ReplyDeleteLOL. That's funny. It might have been drawing bugs. Those "pets" sure are funny. I can't believe I've never had one. I may need to get one now. LOL.
DeleteI love the Psalm and the verse 14 as well "Wait on the Lord;
ReplyDeleteBe of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord!" I need that gentle reminder sometimes to be still and wait , the Good Lord has all under control. I like 1 Peter 5:7 too about casting our cares upon the Lord.
I never actually tried those chia pet things but it looks like it be fun to watch. My grandkids play with a playdoh barber shop I have here and the plaaydoh hair comes out of the head and there's plastic scissors to cut it, So fun
I wonder how many times God tells us in the Bible to wait on the Lord...and to be still before Him...and to put our trust in Him. He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, and that we forget...and yet He loves us so much and is always there for us no matter what. (((hugs))) Oh, the playdoh barber shop sounds like such fun. I want to be a little kid again. LOL.
DeleteIf we don’t get to be kids anymore we can still play like one sometimes! We had our 2 year old grandsons birthday today. We all did some playing! Resting in the Lord is good and we gain strength waiting upon him as well and sometimes God blesses us with the laughter and giggles of children. It’s all good
DeleteI have a tendency toward diverticulitis so I don't know about chia seeds for me. I hope it works for you. You sure bought a big bag.
ReplyDeleteWe've given chia pets as gag gifts before.
These days, I really need to feel God's strength in my heart. I am just so down. I keep busy not to think about it, but the elephant is till in the room.
Yes, you might want to ask your Dr. before eating them. The dr. recommended them to me for regularity issues that I have. He said they will cure the problem. We shall see. However, one shouldn't eat them just as they are...they need to be stirred into yogurt or a pudding or made into a smoothie or something like that. I bought the big bag because I'm supposed to do two tablespoons twice a day, and it was cheaper to buy it that way. I am sorry about the feelings you have that make you feel so down. I pray that God will indeed give you the peace and comfort you need as you seek His face to help you in every situation. He is there for you...just ask, and wait patiently for Him. He will not fail you.
DeleteInteresting! I never thought about actually consuming chia seeds! When I worked at the TV station in the 80's we were all the time getting boxes of those as 'freebies.' While I wasn't especially interesting, I always took one to give my mother. All these years later, now I'm wondering what the heck SHE did with them ... I never saw them when I'd go visit. Ha!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update on the bluebird babies and Colt!
Waiting on the Lord.
Ha ha, maybe your mother was eating the seeds instead of planting them. LOL.
DeleteHi Pamela, I've never owned a chia pet but I did own a pet rock way back in the day, lol. I do however have experience with chia seeds. The easiest way to incorporate them into your daily routine is to put a heaping teaspoonful into a large glass of water. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes. The chia seeds will soften and expand into a gel like substance. Then drink it. I also make chia pudding from time to time. Boil some milk and add a bit of honey and a few spoons of chia. Boil it together and stir it. Then let it sit for a while to thicken. You can eat this as is or add it to something like strawberries. Last but not least you can sprinkle some chia seeds on top of salad or yogurt but if you do it this way, the seeds, in my opinion are not going to 'break down' a bit before you eat. In my mind this means they are not as effective however I'm not an expert. Whenever anything needs to expand to work, I think it's better to have that happen outside of our bodies not inside. All the best with it.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this information. I appreciate the hints about how to eat chia seeds. I tried it today on yogurt with some strawberries and blueberries. I let it sit for a while before I ate it and it did soften a bit and it was easy to eat. The pudding idea sounds good. Not sure I could drink the water/seed combo as is. I tend to have texture issues with drinks and don't like smoothies, etc. But eating it like a pudding would be better for me. Thank you for reading and commenting. I know you are "on vacation" from blogging, so I feel very honored that you would take the time to answer these questions. God bless you dear friend!
DeleteI have been sprinkling on yogurt, cottage cheese and sometimes with oatmeal. I hope that these will help you with your health issue. I always enjoy your blog and photos. We recently purchased a home in keystone heights with similar waterfront and I look forward to landscaping an area like yours after we get settled.
ReplyDeleteDear Betty, My mind is racing...do I know you? You live very near us if you are in Keystone Heights...Please introduce yourself to me, and if I already know you, please forgive my ignorance! Thank you for this kind comment. Oh, I bet the chia seeds would be good with cottage cheese! I hadn't thought of that one yet. I am just getting started and need ideas. I tried yogurt yesterday and that was good. I was thinking of trying oatmeal this morning. Thank you for writing...please do let me know who you are. I don't see where you have a blog so I am at a loss and scratching my head! Have a blessed day. I look forward to getting better acquainted.
DeleteI have never had a chia pet and I don't think I've eaten chia seeds but they do seem to be a healthy addition to your diet. Keep us posted, please!! xo
ReplyDeleteI will keep you posted. And if I sprout green hair you all will be the first to know! LOL.
DeleteSeeing all those chia pet ads around Christmas time only punctuated the fact that it was the perfect gift for someone whose tastes you had no knowledge of. Can we say, white elephant? Now, I'm sure that on their own, they are nutritious, and if your doctor recommended them, I would give them a try. Sounds like you already have. Let us know if you feel a difference once you've eaten them for several weeks.
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Pamela!
Yes, your thoughts about the "chia pets" are the same as mine. They would make a wonderful white elephant gift, and I may have to remember that this year when we do our annual gift exchange. LOL. I am hopeful that the seeds will be beneficial to my overall physical well being. Time will tell, and I will report when I have a suitable report to make. So far so good... Thank you!
DeleteI don't know anything about eating chia seeds, but this made me laugh! ☺ Hope you have a wonderful weekend! 💜
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debbie! I'm so glad you are back here visiting again!! And I am glad this brought a laugh to your heart and a smile to your face! God bless you my friend!
DeleteDoes not sound tasty to me at all. Gross actually but then I am also one who does not eat animals either. 30 year vegetarian
ReplyDeleteGee, I would think chia seeds would be high on the list for a vegetarian! They are a kind of super food from what I've read, high in a lot of good vitamins and minerals, etc. etc. But I am still just getting acquainted with them and how to eat them to give me the most benefits. They are an excellent source of fiber, which is what I need most.
DeleteCute post, Pam, along with excellent scripture (it's all excellent, I know). Chia seeds, oh yes, I've been eating them for a very long time and my hair has yet to turn green. One word of caution, after eating them, check to see if any are embedded between your teeth when you smile. A problem easily remedied with a toothpick or floss.
ReplyDeleteFunny girl. Yes, I have the same issue with celery seeds that are in my favorite salad dressing. Please tell me some ideas of how you eat the chia seeds. I would love to hear your ideas and how it "works" for you! Well, maybe the "works for you" part is personal and you could send me an email. LOL.
Deletegrinning. Chia gives you gas, don't ask how I know, LOOLOL. Thanks for the many smiles my friend.
ReplyDeleteLOL...nowadays free gas could be a good thing. Wish I could bottle that stuff! LOL. Good to hear from you. I miss you!!!!
DeleteOh my, so many to choose from. I've never had one but I do remember them. I remember buying some but I don't believe I ever used them. I'm going to do some research and see what they are really good for. Hope you have enjoyed your weekend.
ReplyDeleteI needed to read this post. Thank you so much. Regine

I've had no experience with chia seeds - either a pet or in consuming but I wish you luck!
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted a Chia pet, just never would spend the money for one! I didn't even realize you could eat chia seeds. WoW, learn something new every day.
