The "Dixie Drive In" was a popular place for teens to go and hangout. They had curbside service with the trays on the windows and "Car-Hop" girls would bring out your order of hamburgers, cokes, milkshakes, or whatever you wanted. They also had indoor booth seating. I remember my older brothers and sister used to go there, but I was too young and was not allowed. By the time I was a teen ager it wasn't as popular as it was in the later 50's/early 60's. I did go there a few times, but it really wasn't a place that I enjoyed going to all that much. It was set between several different little towns that all kind of formed a "triangle", and so kids from other towns/high schools (Rivals!!) also hung out there. I really preferred staying with my friends from my own school.
The place I remember most was our downtown drug store, which had a soda fountain and tables. A lot of kids would go there after school and get a 5 cent cherry or vanilla coke, or french fries, or a milkshake and a hamburger. When I was a teen, I would go there after cheerleading practice after school, and wait there until my mother came and picked me up after she got off work at 5:00. It wasn't open at nights, so it really wasn't a hangout for the weekends or nights, but primarily an after school place.

2 Did you attend your high school varsity games? What high school activities did you enjoy the most? Yes, I attended all of our high school varsity games, football and basketball in particular, and sometimes baseball too. I was a cheerleader all through Jr. High and High School, so I had to go to the games! What activities did I enjoy the most? Hmm, well, I did enjoy being a cheerleader, and also I enjoyed our after game dances...
Our school and town was very small...there were only 50 in my graduating class, (1968), and I went to the same school from 1st - 12th grade, so everyone knew everyone. I still stay in touch with several of my school friends mostly via Facebook. Sadly, like most people our age, our class is starting to dwindle down with so many who have already passed away. Our last class reunion was our 50th. We need to have another while there's still some of us left.
3. Did you have any teen idols whose music or acting you just really enjoyed? What music did you enjoy most? What movies? Teen Idols...well I loved the Beatles, The Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkle, The Righteous Brothers, Sonny and Cher, gosh, there were so many back in the 60's...and I loved most all of them.
Acting or actors? Movies? I loved The Sound of Music with Julie Andrews. It's funny, but I really don't remember a lot of really great movies, but I did always like the ones that Charlton Heston was in, like Ben Hur, and The Ten Commandments, etc., I'm drawing a blank here...but I know there were a lot more movies that I saw...just can't think of them at the moment.
4. Did your school have dances or sock hops and did you attend?
Yes, we used to have dances after the football games at the Civic Center. There was always a live band, which was usually a teen age group of guys who learned how to play guitars and drums and sing the popular songs of the day. The dances were well chaperoned (mostly), and it was always fun to go even if you didn't have a date. And yes, I went to the proms too. The link below tells a lot more about some of those memories:
I guess that's all for this Tuesday 4. Sweet memories...(mostly!...lol...)
So now, since I haven't written in a few days, here's a few pictures to share from Still Waters Pond and around...
I decided to walk around the edge of the pond again this morning and check out the area where I think the Sand Hill Cranes may be building a nest, and at first this is who I saw...Yes, The Canada Geese Couple again...
But they are not on the same spot where they were the other day. They are not far from it, but just a short hop away. I don't think they are building a nest there, however, but maybe just sunning themselves because it was a pretty chilly day! (chilly for us anyway!)
But THEN, I looked back over to the spot where I originally thought the cranes would build their nest, and guess what??? Yep, There she is! Mrs. Crane is busily building her nest!! Often times they work alone to get the nest ready, and then Mr. and Mrs. Crane take turns attending to the nest once the eggs have been laid. I'm not sure if there is an egg yet or not. It looked more like she was still arranging things on the nest...but the sun was so bright it was hard for me to really see the details:
Look these pictures over and see what you think! If you see an egg, let me know!
I didn't stay long enough to see if she ever laid down on the nest. That would be a true tell if there is an egg there or not. I guess I'll be making more trips back and forth in the days ahead to see what is "developing".
I was just happy to see that I was at least right about this location!!
And much earlier this morning (writing this on Monday night), there was a small flock of Great White Egrets who flew in to the pond. They hung around for a while and even the Canada geese swam over to welcome them.
The light was not real good yet, since it was actually just at sunrise, but you get the idea! Always something wonderful happening on Still Waters Pond, no matter what time of day it is.
Like last night's sunset...
And here comes the Canada Geese flying in at sunset:
They flew around to the other side of the island, where they are apparently spending the nights and now most of the day as well...I hope they will build a nest, but time will tell.
I have probably 20 more pictures of this, but I won't bore you with all of them...just suffice it to say it was a magical time watching the beauty of the changing of the scenery as the sun continued to set in the west...no two sunsets are ever the same...each day is a new creation by God
Just as we are also a new creation when we accept Christ as our Savior...
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new.
So thankful for that truth, aren't you? And the older we get, the more like Christ we become as we continue to grow in grace and hopefully in wisdom. That is certainly my prayer. I'm thankful that I am not still that same girl that I was back in high school!
1 What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought
Since Jesus came into my heart!
I have light in my soul for which long I have sought,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Refrain:
Since Jesus came into my heart,
Since Jesus came into my heart,
Floods of joy o'er my soul like the sea billows roll,
Since Jesus came into my heart.
2 I have ceased from my wand'ring and going astray,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And my sins which were many are all washed away,
Since Jesus came into my heart! [Refrain]
3 I’m possessed of a hope that is steadfast and sure,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And no dark clouds of doubt now my pathway obscure,
Since Jesus came into my heart! [Refrain]
4 There's a light in the valley of death now for me,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And the gates of the City beyond I can see,
Since Jesus came into my heart! [Refrain]
5 I shall go there to dwell in that city, I know,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And I'm happy, so happy, as onward I go,
Since Jesus came into my heart! [Refrain]
Amen.
Tomorrow we will be headed back to the eye doctor who did the surgery on hubby's eye. He's having some issues with it and wants to make sure everything is okay. So we'll be getting up early and driving that hour+ away again early in the morning. Hopefully there won't be any fog this time! Someone asked me why we go so far away to the doctor. Well, we do live out in the country, but we also do have eye doctors and other doctors not that far away from us, but this is a cornea specialist because hubby has a condition that is affecting his cornea. So far they don't need to correct that as of yet, and we are hoping they won't have to, but time will tell. That, plus we have to go where they take our insurance!
Okay, that's all folks. I need to wrap this thing up! Have a wonderful day tomorrow. I'll be checking in with you all sometime later when we get back home again.
Best wishes on the eye trip and results.
ReplyDeleteI loved your answers. My town was small too. By my time we mostly sat outside our cars at Dairy Queen and Hardee’s and visited with friends.
I love your cheerleading pic!
ReplyDeleteYour sunset pics are absolutely gorgeous today.
Praying the appt goes well.
What nice memories of your school days. My mom went to a small school, too, with just about the same number of students as yours. She is 80 now and at their last get-together there were only 4 of them either still alive or well enough to make the trip. There were over 350 in my class and we hardly bother with reunions. Up until the informal outside dinner they had for our 40 year reunion they've never mustered more than 25 or so classmates showing up. I think they got 50-60 that last time. I think being connected through social media has killed the lure of the reunion. Well, that and we really weren't all that close as a class.
ReplyDeletePrayers for a safe trip and good answers tomorrow!
Thanks for joining in! Lovely memories and even nicer photos of the pond! I hope the appt goes well. Insurance is a nightmare for many. I have government ins because my husband was a gov agent and it pays everything and is accepted everywhere. I remember when a visit to the doctor was actually affordable! My hometown was tiny and only a mile square but there was lots to do. Again, thanks for joining in!!
ReplyDeleteThose sunset photos are truly wonderful and I'm so happy to see Mrs.(?) Crane working on her nest again. I don't see an egg yet, but hopefully soon. Love that hymn.
ReplyDelete"And I'm happy, so happy, as onward I go. Since Jesus came into my heart."
And here are my answers to the four questions this week.
1,2 & 4- No teen hangouts and I never went to a game or a dance when I was in school. I started working full-time when I was 14 and I never had the opportunity to go. My Dad required all of us to go to work early and begin paying room and board. We also had to buy all of our clothes and school expenses so there wasn't a lot of time to hang out or socialize.
3. When I was younger than that, I liked Bobby Sherman and Donny Osmond. :-)
I'll be praying for John's appointment in the morning.
Blessings,
Betsy
You were such a pretty and lovely cheerleader, smiles. Keeping you all in prayer, smiles.
ReplyDeletethat sunset outshines every thing else today. it is just so amazing and I am trying not to be jealous of where you live, with cranes building nests and all of nature out there. I would love it. yes we had 3 hang outs like the one above, and yes we did drive through them and stop and get a coke and fries and talk to others. our class of 1962 was either 300 or 500, I am leaning towards 300. it was big.. the school in Savannah now has almost 3000 students, all of Savannah highschool students went to 2 highschools other than 2 Catholic high schools..
ReplyDeleteyou look adorable in your cheerleader uniform. I just said to Bob yesterday while watching someone on TV where the cheerleaders were nearly naked, that when I was in school the uniforms were sweaters and skirts to the knee. just like what you have on, I was in the 50's though
Oh, I love your cheerleading photo. You were and still are so lovely.
ReplyDeleteI agree with MadSnapper about the outfits. What a difference between my era and nowadays...
I was never really part of the "hang-out" crowd and very rarely went to the drive-ins. There was a local one that was called Becky's. Wonderful for a while and then a more rowdy thug-ish crowd took things over and I was content to just be with my girlfriends from our youth group and do the things that were planned for us.
Loved Elvis, Tab Hunter and so many from the 50's era.
I graduated in 1961.. way back in the Dark Ages..haha..
Sue
P.S.
DeleteI forgot to say I hope and pray that you appointment goes well and thank you for printing all the words to that old hymn. I remembered most of it and now its going around in my brain..not a bad thing to have going around though.
Sue
What fun memories! If there were any 'teen' hangouts in Los Alamos, I sure wasn't aware of them ... no drive-ins, nada. I'm guessing the 'in' crowd hung out at the bowling alley, but that was forbidden territory by my so-strict parents. The only fun memories I have of socializing centered in and around MYF (Methodist Youth Fellowship). So tame by today's standards!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful blog post filled with memories and nature moments! I loved taking a trip back in time with you to your school days—what a special experience to grow up in such a close-knit community and still keep in touch with old classmates. And the music from the ‘60s… truly a golden era!
ReplyDeleteThe updates from Still Waters Pond are always so peaceful. How amazing to see the Sandhill Crane working on her nest! Moments like that make nature so special, don’t they? I hope you’ll soon discover if there’s already an egg. And that sunset… each day a new masterpiece from the Creator.
Your closing thoughts with 2 Corinthians 5:17 really touched me. What a beautiful truth—that we are made new in Him every day. Thank you for sharing such a warm and inspiring blog! I hope all goes well at the eye doctor. Wishing you a blessed day! 💛
I love your sunset photos over your pond. Always so beautiful!! We both had small schools and enjoyed our high school days! I'm glad the cranes are nesting again!! Keep us posted!! xo
ReplyDeleteHi Pam. It is always nice to read about what is going on there at Still Waters Pond. Prayers that all goes well with John's eye check-up and that you won't have any fog for your drive. I love this post and see your high school pictures and reading your memories. I hope you are having a good week. See you again soon!
ReplyDeleteThe Dixie Drive-In must have been a great spot back in its prime, and the soda fountain at the drugstore sounds like the perfect after-school hangout. Love hearing about these nostalgic places. new post: www.melodyjacob.com

ReplyDeleteLove the sunset photos. It's been so pretty lately. Won't be today, though, unless the rain lets up. It has poured all day. It's great! We're gonna have a pretty Spring me thinks.
Blessings. ❣️
