Friday Foto Friends

Happy Friday Morning! "Baby it's cold outside!"   Our early morning temperature was 34, but the "feels like" temperature was 23 F at 6 a.m.  Our high today will only be 55.  That's pretty doggone chilly for us here in north central Florida in the latter part of February! Not unheard of, but still a bit unusual, especially after we were lulled into a false sense of Spring a week ago!  But spring is definitely still in the air, just a bit on the cold side!

Mrs. Sand Hill Crane is all hunkered down on her nest on Still Waters Pond!  I walked around to where I could see her yesterday afternoon, hoping she would stand up long enough for me to see how many eggs she has...

But, alas! My camera memory card decided to announce that it was all full and I couldn't take any more pictures at that time. Thankfully, she didn't stand up so I didn't miss anything. I will have to try again today when it warms up a little bit.  Right now it's 34 degrees and I'm not going out for anything if I don't have to! LOL.  I know...you folks up north think I'm a big sissy! Well, maybe I am, but at least I'm a warm big sissy! LOL.

Yesterday wasn't quite as cold, thankfully, and hubby and I drove about an hour + south through the forest to meet up with his brother Billy and wife Peggy and their son Nicholaus for lunch, and to celebrate a belated hubby's birthday with them. They live about another hour south of that location, so this little favorite restaurant, "The Mason Jar", is a good half way meeting place.

Here's hubby and his brother Billy...it took a couple of pictures to get both of them to look at me... LOL.

Here's my sister in law Peggy and yours truly, with our friend the bear:
And here's Peggy and Nicholaus...who still loves to play this game with me when I want to take his picture.  He has a nice profile, don't you think? LOL.  We love Nick...he's such a good sport and a great young man, who is finishing up his bachelor's degree in Psychology (and something else, I'm not sure exactly).  It's always good to have a psychologist/counselor in our crazy family...LOL.

I took this picture of a picture hanging on the wall in the restaurant lobby.  This place is back in my home territory where I grew up, and this is a picture of the Lake County Sheriff's Department back in the late 1950's.  The man wearing the suit 2nd to the left is Sheriff Willis V. McCall, and those men are his deputies. That picture was taken in front of the county courthouse, and this is significant, because my mother used to work in that office  right behind them. She was a secretary to the Sheriff in the early 60's.  I knew most of those deputies as I used to go to her office after school a lot of the time, and also they became friends with our family.  However, if you look up the Sheriff, you will find that he was rather notorious in the history of Lake County, back during the days of segregation in the south prior to when the Civil Rights Act became the law of the land. Let's just say that my mother had her eyes opened to many unpleasant things when she took that job in that office, but she was an excellent secretary and handled her position very professionally.
It was interesting to see this bit of history from an era long gone now.

Speaking of history,  this is going on in our little town of Interlachen right now.  This old historical building, A.K.A. "The Brush Store", is finally being renovated after a bad fire several years ago.

These are photos below of how it used to look many years ago, when it was a prosperous little general store and the Post Office.  More recently it was a rental home until the fire.
1943-44

This is how it looked in 1885.  Our church is right down the street, on the right side, but this picture may have been taken even before our church was built in 1887.

 The same building in 1915

I don't know if the people doing the current renovation are going to restore it back to the original, or make it into a house again. Originally the owners of the store lived upstairs.  I would LOVE to see this restored back to the "original", with a store downstairs, but that probably wouldn't be cost effective for them, so we shall see what develops.  I'm just glad they aren't tearing it down as it has so much history.

This is also in our historical downtown:

And, as I mentioned in a previous post, our little town is growing again...we will soon have a Dunkin' Donuts:

I guess you could call that progress? Maybe...maybe not. LOL.

One of my blogging friends, Bernideen's Tea Time, Cottage and Garden, shares lovely photos of her tea parties and garden and beautiful table settings in her home "tea room".    In her latest post (linked above), she stated that "February Means Time for Violets".  Since I was wanting to put away my red Valentines decor and replace it with something else, her suggestion led me to look for the violet and other spring time tea sets that I have.  So here's what I came up with:

First of all, I just realized that this sweet little basket of flowers on the Susan Branch calendar for February this year is actually a basket of violets, although they are pink and not the traditional "violet" purple color:

This is a miniature tea set that was given to me by a dear friend from our church who was moving away and downsizing.  Isn't it beautiful?

Lily Grace thought so, and wanted to put on something purple to wear instead of her red Valentine's dress...

The other tea sets are gifts from family in the past...all special treasures to me!

Hubby gave me this beautiful little sugar and creamer (see below) from a trip he made to California one time for a Pastor's conference. He was able to take a tour of the Queen Mary ship that is docked there, and he bought these for me and had to carry them in his lap on the plane all the way back home to Ohio (I think that's where we lived at the time).  When he stepped off the plane to greet me, he handed me this little bag with these in it and said, "Here, take these quick before I drop them! I've been holding them for hours on this trip because I didn't want to pack them in my suitcase for fear they would get broken!"

So they are especially special to me!

This little violet small tea set was a gift from my Mother and Father years ago, so it is also a treasure.  The larger tea cup and saucer, I am not sure where it came from,
and the cannister behind it was a gift from a friend also.

Oh, and that "The Tea Party Book" was also a gift from one of my dear blogging friends! It has all kinds of fun ideas for tea parties for children and others as well.  And the sweet tea pot on the left was a gift from my sister Doris many years ago.

Since violets seem to be such a special flower, I looked it up to find out if there is any other information that was meaningful about the violet.  Here is a link to a post about Violet Flower Meaning & Symbolism, that certainly had a lot more information than I ever realized about the sweet little violet flower.   I thought this was interesting:

"Victorian Era

In the Victorian era, the “language of flowers” became popular, and violets were a significant part of this tradition. They symbolized modesty, faithfulness, and everlasting love. Violets were often included in bouquets and gifts to convey these sentiments.

The sweet fragrance of violets made them popular in the perfume industry. Violets were used to create perfumes and scented products, contributing to their popularity in Victorian society."
Speaking of everlasting love...
1 John 4:12 NKJV

"12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another,
God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us."

And also speaking of Lily Grace, her little wardrobe has expanded over the past few years, and the original box I had to hold all of her special things has become too small. (the one on the bottom).

I love these boxes that they sell at the Dollar General. They come in so many different colors, styles and sizes, and this one with the bluebirds on it seemed to be the perfect one to hold the extra shoes, hair ribbons, and other little things that little girls accumulate:

Now hopefully we can keep her things more organized and easier to find!  Whew! I never knew little girls could accumulate so much stuff! LOL.

Speaking of Bluebirds:  Our bluebirds are continuing to visit the birdhouse regularly, but to my knowledge they still haven't built a nest.  One day at a time.  I've already shared this picture before, but my camera was acting up again when I wanted to take a current picture of them a few minutes ago, and so I didn't think you'd mind seeing this one again...

Some words of wisdom from God's Word and others from yesterday's calendar page...

And with that I will close this post for today. Praying you will each have a blessed and faith-filled weekend.

  1. The pond and the blue birds are so lovely!
I don't think you're a wimp about the cold. It all depends on what you're used to! And I'm a wimp up here about our cold. :)
Glad you had that nice outing with family.
I love seeing those old pictures. You'll have to keep us up to date on the renovations.

  2. so now even dolls have storage problems. those boxes are perfect. I have 3 boxes from Dollar Tree, they are octagan shaped not rectangles. I love seeing the photos in the restaurant and my maiden name is McCall, from Georgia, Sparky found we are distant cousins.. the town just south of us, here is all McCall, streets and stores and avenues. and now there was a sheriff McCall. the house you love is gorgeous and so happy they saved it. there is one in Ormond Beach exactly like it. just north of 40 that comes from Ocala and ends at ormond beach. I have a photo but its in albums and not easy to find.
I do hope the cold doesn't harm the new eggs she is sitting on. the water in the photos of the crane is just spectacular.

    1. Yes, Lily Grace has accumulated a lot of "stuff". She is a favorite of doting aunties and other crazy old ladies like myself. LOL. Regarding the name "McCall", one of our school's most prized teachers was a lady named Doris McCall Ragan. She was a true character and probably the best English teacher ever. She taught at our school for at least 50 years I think. I don't know who her McCall people were, but if you could trace your roots to her stock, you'd have some really good stock for sure! LOL. She lived to be in her 90's and was still just as chipper as ever. She was a tiny little thing, but she could sure pack a wallop with the paddle, from what I've been told by those who were unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of it! LOL. I have been on that route 40 from Ocala to Ormond Beach many many times. I don't remember any such house, but if I ever go back that way again, I will certainly look for it. There's so much new development there now I just don't know if it is still there. But if you ever find the picture, let me know, and if I ever get back over there, I will look and see if it is still there. Oh, I don't think the cold will harm the baby crane egg. Mama and Papa Crane take turns sitting on the nest, and they are quite warm and insulating with all their feathers and big warm bodies. I hope to get back over there today to see if I can catch her standing up so I can count the eggs.
Have a lovely day my friend.

  3. Lovely photos. It's nice to see little towns gain some businesses but, I do wish they would use more authentic architecture when they build rather than the modern box stuff. I hope you will show us the development of the old post office building as they renovate it. How exciting that will be. I have never ever seen a blue bird. Everyone tells me they see them all the time but I just never have! Or a gold finch which is NJ's state bird. I think it's a conspiracy. I see eagles, hawks, seagulls and sea birds galore. cardinals, blue jays, chickadees, crows, ravens, owls , wrens you name it but never any of those. Do they just not like me?? Well, who knows.
Lily Grace looks nice in purpple and the quilt she is sitting on is one I have as well, though I may have given it away at one point. Hope you are doing well and that hubby is healing well too. Hugs.

    1. Yes, I agree with you regarding authentic architecture! But in today's economy, I don't think they care much about style...just numbers! And yes, I will be documenting the development of the old post office "Brush Store" building. It is right on our way to church, so I go by there quite often. I am happy to see it become something other than a buzzard's roost, as it has been that ever since they had a fire in upstairs a few years ago. I can only imagine what they've had to "clean out" of there! yuck. I do wish they'd make it back into a nice old fashioned general store, but our old historical downtown isn't really a business area anymore so I don't know how creative they will be. If I had the money to do so, that's what I would do. I am sorry you haven't seen a bluebird. Maybe if you put up an authentic bluebird house on a post in an open area, you might attract them! I got mine at Ace Hardware, and it's made by the Audubon society. But the pattern is simple and they sell them at Walmart too I think. If they are in the area, you may be able to attract them with a house. I don't feed them anything. They find their own food in nature. Now the Gold Finches only pass through here in the spring. I do put out a feeder of finch/niger seed for them when I know they are due, and they will flock to it for a few weeks and then be on their way, probably up to your area! Maybe when your spring arrives, hang out a "sock of niger (thistle) seed", they sell it wherever you can buy birdseed, and maybe they will show up at your house! Lily Grace says thank you! And that quilt is fairly old, as in maybe 20 years, and it was given to me by a friend who was "cleaning out her closets" and didn't need that one anymore. I said thank you very much! Thanks for coming by. Do come again.

  5. I have a couple of those boxes but I bought mine at Hobby Lobby. One has my mom’s paperdolls and the other holds vintage letters, post cards, old documents from my family from the late 19th century. I enjoy being whisked away to another time while looking through it all.
You sure have a lot of tea pots. I inherited my sisters tea pots which I gave to my daughter-in-law and kept one for me. I never use it.
I’ve never had a Dunkin donut. We don’t have any around here. But I’m sure they’re good because I’ve never met a donut I didn’t like. I hear their coffee is good.
So Mrs C has laid an egg? Awesome. All eyes and video cams are on our lady Liberty. Nothing yet.
    Always an enjoyable read

    1. I love that you have your mom's paperdolls! I used to play with paper dolls with my sister, mostly Betsy McCall from the magazine, but we had others too. They were a lot of fun! And yes, it is fun to go back in time and try to imagine how life was for our ancestors back in the late 19th century. I felt like I was living there when I was doing all the research on Ancestry regarding my paternal grandmother who was adopted. It was like going on a big scavenger hunt to figure out who all her birth relatives were. I hope she finally got to meet them all when she got to heaven. I look forward to that as well, to see if I got it right! LOL. Dunkin donuts are pretty good, but they can't beat a homemade donut or some from a real bakery. I'm not a huge donut fan because I just can't eat the sugar anymore, but I do love a good fresh hot apple cider donut in the fall, with a cup of hot apple cider to wash it down! Now that's a treat worth traveling to the North Georgia mountains in the fall to get! LOL. Yes, our Mrs. Crane has laid at least one egg. I've yet to see her stand up to count how many. Last year I was able to see their nest from my yard, but not this year. So it's a little more of an effort to get around to where I can see it and hope that she will stand up and show me how many eggs are there. Yesterday was too cold and windy to go, but maybe today. I hope your Lady Liberty will do her duty for God and Country and lay an egg!! Let us know!! Have a lovely weekend.

  6. Aww, Pamela... I definitely have teapot set envy. They are scrumptious.
My Mothers name is Violet and she fits the description to a T. or is it tea?
Eagerly awaiting the egg count for your Mrs. Crane.
To answer your question on my blog. The geese make their home several blocks away from us. They like the pond around the apartment complex over there. When we take a walk we often go that way to see how the geese are doing.. pretty messy and very territorial. I will try to take some photos when the next batch of goslings shows up.

    1. Oh, how lovely that your Mother's name is Violet! And I imagine she did live up to that description...to a TEA! LOL. Oh, so the geese in your neighborhood around the pond must be a large flock. I am thankful that we don't get that many over here on our pond, because I know how messy and territorial they can be. The most we've ever had at once is perhaps 10 or 12, but they don't usually stay a long time. Just this couple that comes back every year to nest...hopefully!! Oh, yes, I'd love to see your baby goslings when they appear!!

I love history and historical buildings. I'm glad to see that they are still being preserved and renovated. I enjoy learning the history of those places and I bet that if walls could talk, they'd have stories to tell!
Lily Grace is a sweet as ever! Such a perfect tea party hostess.
I'm glad that your cranes have done okay with all your cold weather. They are pretty resilient!
    Have a great weekend.

  9. Violets are so lovely, Pamela, and they will soon be blooming where we are if this cold weather ever goes away - LOL! Glad you could meet up with John's brother and his family, too. Thanks for giving us a glimpse, too, into the "olden" days of your town. I'm happy that they're going to restore that building and not tear it down. It's historical places like that that truly make a town special. Give Lily Grace a big hug from her Aunt Martha. :) Blessings!

  10. I absolutely enchanted by that "Brush Store" renovation! I didn't always used to feel this way, but I'm so drawn to olden structures. Oh, if those walls could talk; what stories!
Lily Grace looks so pretty in her purple, and I love how the Valentine's red has given way to violet. I'm going to have to peek inside my father's old Navy trunk where I keep the china and see if I don't spot a similar teacup. That's so cool that John hand-carried those pieces from Long Beach; not many men would think to do something like that.

  11. Cool old pics! I like history. That is nice.
    The violets are very pretty.
John and his brother sure look a lot alike. Steve and his sister look like siblings. I'm so similar to my birth-mother it's almost like I didn't have dad. lol
Hope y'all have a great weekend.
    Blessings. 💓

  14. My friend in FL called me yesterday and "complained" that it was cold at 52 degrees and I told her that I would trade that for our 25 degrees 😀 I liked seeing the vintage photos of the forer store and hope the renovation goes well. You are most likely right in that it would not be a store again because of it not being profitable enough in this economy, which is unfortunate as small stores were always the heart of a community.
