Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!

Fanning Away
Well, it happened again! The AC broke down last night, but this time it is a different problem. The good news is, help is on the way! If you live in our area, I highly recommend "Frosty's" for AC repair. Once you are an established customer, they will do their best to take care of you no matter when...including weekends!
(Pulling out all the fans...this woven palm fan is ancient! It could be more than 60 years old at least. It came with the buffet from John's grandmother's house, tucked in one of the drawers. No telling how many years it was in there, but it still works just fine!)
So, as I sit here "fanning away", I am very thankful that God has placed these special people in our midst. We learned about them through our church, as they take care of the church AC.
This lovely fan was a gift from one of our sweet blogging friends, the same sweet friend who sent Lily Grace to me, all the way from Charleston, SC. Thank you, dear "Auntie Debbi", from "Debbi's Front Porch". It would be nice to have a cool front porch to sit upon today, but alas! It is just as hot and humid outside as it is inside.
I've had this oriental fan and ginger jar forever. May have to break it out as well...
This one is in my "Room With a View", humming away and keeping me somewhat cool, but with the high humidity, I am still in a bit of a sweat...
Here's the view from my window. But it's too hot and humid to open the window...at least it is a cloudy day, with rain promised later on...
Thankfully we do have ceiling fans on the back porch too. The other day we noticed that a family of wasps had taken up residence inside this fan. When we turned it on, wasps flew every direction! So there was no sitting out there at that time. We waited until early morning before sunrise and sprayed it good with that long distance wasp sprayer, and by the time the sun came up we had dead wasps laying everywhere under the fan. Sorry, wasps...you picked the wrong place to set up housekeeping this time!
Here are the "Porch Rules"...and if I could "Feel the Breezes" I would take a nap out there and then read a book, converse with a friend, listen to (and watch) the birds, sip a cool drink and just RELAX! But there is NO breeze to feel on this sultry early summer day here in north central Florida.
Ahhh!! But I have some GREAT NEWS!!! While I've been sitting here typing this post, our friend Frosty came and found the problem and FIXED IT!! It was some kind of capacitor...and he only charged us for the service call since he'd been here recently two times for a different problem. We are all hoping and praying that we can keep this almost 20 year old air conditioner running a while longer. A new one would definitely break our piggy bank and then some!!!!
So now I am beginning to feel cooler air blowing on my back and neck while I sit here writing.
The humidity is starting to give way to dry cool air, and I can breathe again...
Praise God!
Now tonight I might be able to sleep well and enjoy my new
"My Pillow', which arrived yesterday afternoon. I did use it last night, and I must admit I woke up without any neck pain! The rest of my body was a wreck from tossing and turning in the heat and humidity, but my neck felt great, and still does! So praise God again for an answered prayer!
I believe I will definitely sleep in peace and comfort tonight...
(from the Devotional book, "Choose Grace")
"I will both lie down in peace, and sleep;
For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety."
Psalm 4:8 NKJV
And now I can put away my fans and stop "fanning away".
So thankful they were here when I needed them most, however!
God is good!

Oh no!!!! I certainty feel for you. We don't have central ac here, just window units and they are running. One thing I have learned thru out the years; close the drapes/blinds and keep the windows closed. I am so glad to know Frostys fixed whatever, grin. AND Thank you for your kind words, Pamela. smiles
ReplyDeleteYes, I was closing the window blinds this morning for sure. I wished we could open the windows, but when it is this humid it doesn't do any good. As you know, living here in Florida you really can't survive very well w/o AC. We managed when I was growing up, but that was because NO one had AC, not even school or church. So we didn't know any different. But now I am old and set in my ways, and I sweat! LOL. Yes, we thank the Lord for Frosty's!!
DeleteSo sorry to hear about the breakdown! This is why we went ahead and bought a brand new central A/C system a few months ago. Ours was still the original one installed in 1993. Also had all the original ducting re-taped and cleaned. We were heading down that road to doing without. No thanks! It gets super, duper, nasty hot here in SE Georgia. I've also bought a window unit from Chinese Mart that can be "quickly" installed for emergencies. Every room has a fan too. So far, we've only had to use the window unit once. God is good and I give Him the glory for all these blessings.
ReplyDeleteBlessings to y'all. xx
Oh, yes, Praise God for all His blessings. Yes, your AC was definitely due to be changed. Ours is from 2003, and if we can make it to the 20 year mark w/o replacing it, I will be happy. Hubby just said we need to set up an AC replacement fund and start putting money away for that day. You are smart to put in the window unit as needed. I was wishing I had one last night in our bedroom. We are so spoiled. I grew up w/o AC in Florida, and we survived, but NO one else had it either, so we didn't know the difference. But now we KNOW the difference, and I can't go back there again, at least not in Florida. We managed just fine up north because the heat doesn't stay around as long, but here it is most of the year. Thank you for your good ideas!!
DeleteI am glad to hear that your My Pillow worked on your neck! And that Frostie's was able to fix the AC quickly. We have decided that when ours goes kaput, we will not replace immediately. We will use our "mini splits" instead on a room-by-room basis and try to save up for a new system or maybe not even get one. As you know, central AC is astronomical in price. The people who owned the house before us put in some mini-splits and they work perfectly (and economically) for the room they are in. Since for some reason we seem to live in just 3 rooms, it works well for us! That palm fan you have is amazing. I love seeing handiwork from ages ago. Compare that to our throw-away society where things break as soon as they are home!
ReplyDeleteYes, I am very thankful for Frosty's and for my little fans when needed most. And I am happy that My Pillow really felt good to me last night...It was the ONLY thing that felt good as I lay there sweating in my bed, but tonight should be a different and better story! Mini-split AC's are a relatively new invention that seem to be a good deal for the right places. I am glad they work for you and hopefully they save $$ in the overall picture of things. It's funny how somehow we manage to live in just a small # of rooms in our homes, and yet we have all these other rooms to spare and collect dust...sort of. But when we need them we are glad we have them! Guest Room in particular. Yes, I love that little palm fan. It belonged to John's grandmother, and she died in 1983. I am sure she had it many many years before that, and I am sure she used it a lot as she did not have AC in her home until her more latter years, and then only a window unit. Amazing how we all survived before AC. That's one of the olden days that I would not want to go back to. LOL. Have a blessed weekend.
DeleteGlad to hear you got your AC fixed. We ran ours last year from June - Oct. We had 90 heat and higher. Luckily no humidity. We use portable fans too. I love the sound of it for sleeping.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susan. Yes, here in Florida, we run our AC almost year round. Maybe not so much in Dec.- March, but there have been days that we have needed it even then. Humidity is the biggest culprit here. Without AC it is very easy to have mildew take over in a house really quickly. I remember battling it when growing up in our bathrooms and closets, etc. So thankful for the invention of central AC. And yes, we use our fans here and there as well. I hope you are having a blessed weekend.
DeleteThank goodness your AC has been fixed, and so quickly, Pamela! Summer in Florida, or here in Georgia, is unbearable without the blessing of air conditioning. I have a My Pillow, too, and I absolutely love it. Just yesterday, Danny ordered some towels from there. We'll see if we like those, too.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Oh, I do hope the towels will be nice and just what you wanted. Do you also have their sheets? I am very happy with My Pillow. I may order one for John now too, but he doesn't seem to have the same issues that I have with a pillow. I never did either when I was younger, but lately I've gone through so many pillows. I hope this one will be THE one! Have a wonderful weekend.
DeleteI'm so glad they arrived and took care of everything quickly for you! *whew*
ReplyDeleteYes, that was a miracle in itself! I never dreamed they would come out on a Saturday! And didn't charge us a weekend rate either...they were very very good to us. We are thankful and blessed.
DeleteOh, thank God for ethical 'first responders' like Frosty! While living in Tarpon Springs with a house-full of company my a/c went belly-up ..... on Mother's Day ... and no-one would come out. My son was so cute, "That's ok, mom. We're from Alabama." You're such a trooper! Honestly, I don't know that I could have stayed there -- extreme heat seriously makes me ill. When our A/C tech was out for the Spring check-up she explained the labor portion is already out of warranty, but the parts is good 'til 2024. All the same, it wouldn't hurt to take a page from John and start planning for an emergency. Sad to say, I don't have much faith in what's being manufactured in this day and age.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to hear your new pillow seems to be a good fit! I tried sleeping with the 'octopus' for the first time last night and wound up throwing it on the floor. I was concerned it might be too hot, but no. It just lacks the firmness, the support I like.
Oh, how awful that Mother's Day event must have been. I know I do get headaches when having to live in the heat and humidity, and I was SO happy when Mr. Frosty called and said they'd be right over! I could hardly believe my ears! Oh, your "octopus" pillow is so funny, but I am sorry it didn't work out for you. But we never know til we try. My mother carried around a whole duffle bad of pillows when she traveled anywhere to stay overnight. I used to think it was funny, but now I totally understand. I just have three pillows and a teddy bear. LOL. Have a blessed weekend.
DeleteSo glad you are cool again! I'm also glad you got your pillow and it works as promised! I am allergic to wasp venom so would have been running like a track star from your porch!! Yikes! Pretty fans! Put them away! xo
ReplyDeleteOh, Terri, I am glad you weren't around these wasps. John did get a little glancing blow from one of the wasps when he turned the fan on...that's how we knew they were there. Thankfully it wasn't a full sting, but we put "afterbite" on it and it helped a lot. Do you keep one of those in your purse? If you are allergic to bee stings you probably should keep one handy, plus a benadryl tablet. Working where you do now in a more natural setting it might be a good idea to be prepared! Just a thought. Yes, the pretty fans are back where they belong, on display in my cabinets. Praise God for Frosty!!!
DeleteWonderful that you have Frosty to fix the AC.I feel about my furnace as you feel about the AC. Here's to good air to breathe and good sleep.
ReplyDeleteI know how one feels about their furnace in Maine, as we lived in NH and Maine and experienced winter in all its "glory". We didn't really need AC except for maybe a week or two in summer...but we sure needed that furnace/woodburner/whatever was available to heat the house. We had a wood-fired furnace at one house that could use wood or oil I think. I remember when we first moved to that house in NH, (it was the parsonage for the church we served), the church ordered a whole truck load of logs, and the men of the church had a work day and came and cut and split all those logs into firewood for the furnace. We had a picnic and fellowship time when the work was done. Many hands make light work! Thankfully those men were experienced woodsmen...my hubby was not, coming from the south. It was a great day!
DeleteThat terrible heat is not for me. we are having near 100F temps recently but the humidity is very low. Still that is too hot for me,thankfully we do have air conditioning .
ReplyDeleteWow, I never realized you would reach 100 degrees there so far north! I am glad you have low humidity...that is what really zaps us here. Yes, so very thankful for AC. What a wonderful invention that was!!!!
DeleteI'm so glad to hear your air con has been fixed. The combination of heat and humidity is one I can't handle well and just heat is hard enough. Right now I've got my patio door and windows open and 2 fans going so I am cooler where I may roam indoors, lol. I'm glad your pillow arrived and that your neck thanks you. Have a great Sunday!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Penny. Yes, we are VERY thankful the AC has been fixed, and that our serviceman did it so quickly on the weekend and also gave us a break on the cost. What a double blessing that was! And MY Pillow is doing great so far. I am very pleased with it. Now on to Sunday School and Church in a little while! Praise God! Thank you for your kind thoughts and words.
DeletePam: I am glad you got your AC fixed. We have four pedestal fans, one in each of our main rooms. They really put out the cool air. When I turned 40, my mother gav me a hand fan and told me after I unwrapped it,"Every 40 year old woman needs to have one of those." Since my surgery and my new medication, I need to find another hand fan. Peace and blessings to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Cecelia...I truly understand the meaning of your mother's very thoughtful gift! And it doesn't stop at 40, 50, 60, or even 70. I still wake up in the middle of the night wanting a "hand fan". And I often do just that! LOL.
DeleteThe words in your devotional book at the end of this post are perfect for day's end. I really liked that.
ReplyDeleteDid you ever see Back to the Future (the first of the 3 movies) with Michael J. Fox. I think the professor used a "flux capacitor" in his time-traveling car. I guess a "capacitor" can have multiple uses!! Ha-ha!
I 'm glad things got fixed.
Funny you should mention the "flux capacitor". I thought of that when the repairman said that is what it needed. I couldn't remember exactly where I'd heard it, but you are correct...Back to the Future! Are we there yet? Thank you for your kind words, and YES, we are VERY glad things got fixed! Praying for you and all of your latest "plans". God is definitely in control and is working all things together for your good. Can't wait to see the floor plans for your new home. Praying you through this next phase of life.
DeleteI am so sorry to hear you have been without AC. That Florida heat has started so I know what you mean about trying to stay cool. It will zap all your energy.
ReplyDeleteI have been a bit busy with Mom, Tucker, and Lindsay. All have been sick so I have been out of pocket on reading and catching up. I hope your pillow continues to help. I really do like mine.
Take care.
I am sorry to hear that your family has been sick. I do hope they are feeling better by now. I know Lindsay has a "big event" coming up soon, so I pray she will be totally well and ready for the arrival of her sweet new baby. Praying for you as well, that you will have the strength you need to help with Tucker, etc. I imagine your "reading and stitching" times will be getting harder to work in as the days go by. Yes, I do like My Pillow so far. I think it is helping, but I still have some back/neck issues. Old age catching up with me I think. Have a wonderful week and please take care.
DeleteGirl, so glad that ac is fixed! Lord help me Jesus! At least it's not 100 degrees! Praise the Lord. YES, any kind of fan works for me. Matter of fact, I run ac, fan at my bedside and ceiling fan when I go to bed. About freeze poor Marty too death sometimes. I can't stand being hot especially at night when I am trying to sleep. Wonder what in the world I done and how I made it before we had AC in which I can remember!!!! We sure get spoiled quick. Awe, nothing like a new pillow. I need to replace mine. It is starting to wear down. I bought one from Bed, bath and beyond some years back when I began having neck issues. Love it. Paid more money for it than I ever dreamed possible for a pillow but when having neck issues....MONEY AIN'T NO OBJECT but my neck sure was! LOL! Happy Week to you dear lady. Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteThank you. We are very thankful it is fixed as well. It wasn't 100, but it was in the 90's with high humidity, so it might as well be 120 if you ask me! LOL. We are truly praising the Lord for the quick response and repair by our AC man. God is so kind and good to us. Yes, I grew up in Florida w/o AC, and it was brutal, but we didn't know it because we didn't know any better! No one else had it either. But I'd hate to go back to that way now. And yes, we need to take care of our necks and backs and bones. The older we get the more they break down and cause all sorts of problems, so if a pillow can help, then Praise God for the pillow! I just have to also make myself get up and move around more often and not allow myself to sit in a slouched position too long. My mother was always telling us girls to stand up straight and tuck in our tummy and bottom and hold our heads high. She'd be appalled at my poor posture today! LOL. I hope you have a happy week too. God bless you dear friend.
DeleteSo sorry about your air conditioner going out. Glad you have the extra fans and the pretty hand held fans. We are about to turn our on for this year and we are holding our breath. There is one the always makes a grinding sound when it start up but it ran all last summer. Wish us luck. We have two units for this house.
ReplyDeletePraying your AC will work just fine...but you may want to have that one serviced before it "grinds" to a halt! Our last house had 2 units also, and we always prayed that they would not BOTH go down at the same time, and thankfully, they didn't, but they came close a few times! When you live in a very hot, humid climate, you pray a lot about your air conditioners! LOL. Have a blessed day.
