Friday Foto Friends ~ Humbled and Blessed

Happy Friday, Friends!  Time for some "fotos" from the week, and yes, I actually have a few this week!

Can you guess where we were yesterday?  Maybe these lovely ladies serenading us on the mandolin by the light of the moon with a basket of beautiful flowers (lilacs, maybe?) will give you a clue!

Or perhaps this cute Flapper Girl, enjoying a delicious Sundae with a cherry on top will help you to figure it out...

Perhaps this handsome fella sitting on the rocking chairs on the "front porch" will give you a better clue...

Give up? Well, maybe seeing these two smiling faces from their rocking chairs on the front porch will certainly give it away! Of course! We were at Cracker Barrel! Now if you live in an area of the country where they don't have a Cracker Barrel, I am truly sorry for you!

Anyway, yes, we were enjoying a late breakfast yesterday morning at Cracker Barrel in between my appointments at the Univ. of Florida Neuromedicine Hospital in Gainesville, FL.  We had a lot of time to kill in between appointments.  My first appt. with the neurosurgeon was at 9:30 a.m., and then he sent me for more x-rays, and after that I was blessed to actually get an appointment at 2:30 p.m. for a Nerve Conduction Velocity test, followed by and Electromyography Test (EMG). I say "blessed" because this appointment only became available due to a cancellation that morning. Otherwise, the next available appointment would not be until December!  So, even though it meant a long wait, we knew we could not pass up on that opportunity.

Therefore, hubby and I spent the intervening time enjoying a late breakfast because they did not serve lunch until 11:00 and we got there at 10:30. After that we shopped a little in the store of the Cracker Barrel, and then went on to do a little more shopping at a couple of other stores in a nearby shopping center.  After that we went back to the hospital to just wait it out...and it turned out my 2:30 appointment did not actually happen until about 3:30, so it really was a long wait.

While we waited for my appointment we had time to just sit and observe people around us. I can tell you it was a humbling experience. My problems seem so small when I see what others have to live  and deal with in their lives. One young woman in a wheelchair, totally incapacitated and who could only make low guttural sounds to make her needs known, was being lovingly cared for by, I assume her mother, who had to be at least my age.  After watching this dear soul for a while from a distance, we both concluded that she was actually an intelligent young woman, trapped in a physical body that she had no control over. It was very heart breaking, and as I said, humbling.  Her image has not left my mind even yet this morning, and so I lift up a prayer for her and her mother, that God would somehow brighten their day and give them a sense of His presence and peace in their lives.

Regarding my own situation, I will have to wait on the neurosurgeon to get back to me with the results of the tests to determine what is next. His first thought before seeing the test results was that he does NOT think I am a candidate for surgery yet.  However, from what I was able to ascertain from the neurologist conducting the nerve tests, there is nerve damage in my arm, and so something will have to be addressed. I will wait and see just what that "something" will be.  Meanwhile, I guess I keep going to physical therapy...

So now for some more happy photos from my back yard on Still Waters Pond:

The Sand Hill Crane Family flew in again for some dessert. It was fun to watch them poking around in the grass, digging up whatever it is they like so much.

There actually were three of them, the mother, father, and grown baby, but it was hard to get all three of them together in one photo.

I always feel honored when they come to visit.

We do enjoy what God provides to bring some beauty and joy to our days.

And that would include this Rose of Sharon, that continues to blossom in the "Secret Memorial Garden".

The leaves are starting to turn yellow from the heat and sun and also because it is "fall" approaching. But even that variegated color is lovely, don't you think?

And these little red maple leaves are growing up from the stump of the tree that was cut down recently when we had some tree work done. I was not thrilled that they cut down this tree, but they were trying to open up more light into that area so the trees in the "secret garden" could get more sunshine and actually be healthier.  However, I intend to let this maple tree just grow right back up if it so pleases.  It looks like it wants to, don't you agree???

Oh look! We have a new inhabitant in the birdhouse!!! Actually, there are two interesting creatures on this picture!! I wonder who would win that battle...the lizard or the wasp?

Yes, this lizard has taken up residence in the Bluebird house. He pokes his head out throughout the day to catch some bugs and say hello!

He has claimed it as his own, but when the bluebirds come back to roost in the spring I hope he knows he will have to move out!!! This is their house, and he is just a squatter who has no proper lease!
But I guess it's okay for him to stay and take care of the place until they return.
Even little lizards need a warm, dry place to live.

Here's some thoughts for today:

Romans 12:9-16
9.  "Let love be without hypocrisy.
Abhor what is evil,
cling to what is good.
10.  Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love,
in honor giving preference to one another;
11.  not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;
12.  Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer;
13.  distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.
14.  Bless those who persecute you;
bless and do not curse.
15.  Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.
16.  Be of the same mind toward one another.
Do not set your mind on high things,
but associate with the humble.
Do not be wise in your own opinion."

Thank You, Lord, for these thoughts and lessons today.
I am humbled and blessed.

Some Morning Retrospection

ret·ro·spec·tion  (definition via internet)
ˌretrəˈspekSHən/
noun
noun: retrospection; plural noun: retrospections
  1. "The action of looking back on or reviewing past events or situations, especially those in one's own life."

My morning "retrospection" is a reflection on thoughts, actions, and "dreams" from yesterday that have lingered into today.  I will elaborate as we go...

We took a little ride yesterday, and as we passed by this old "Florida Cracker-style house" , I begged my hubby to pull over so I could take a picture. He did so, a bit reluctantly, because there wasn't much room alongside the road to do so safely, but he finally managed to stop, and I stepped out of the car for a brief moment and snapped this photo. Why? Because I love the style, the historical value, and the enchanting charm of this old house with its rusty tin roof and rambling front porch overgrown with sprawling vines and summer grasses.  Something about this old homeplace just spoke to my heart as I contemplated the memories of days gone by and the lives of those who lived, laughed, and loved in this place and called it "home"..."be it ever so humble, there's no place like home."

Of course, when I got back home I immediately placed this picture on my Facebook page, and mentioned how much I'd love to "explore" it further and perhaps get a picture of the side view of the house, as I could barely glimpse a back extension of a breezeway and an  attached summer kitchen--a typical type of structure for that day and time. I further stated that it didn't appear to be inhabited. Several of my friends commented right away about the charm of this place, and a few even had further insights into the historical significance of the summer kitchen...
From my friend Mirl: "They would build the kitchen away from the house in case of fire. Also to cut down on the heat!"
And regarding the double front doors on the porch...
From my friend Lonnie: "Notice two front doors. This was to allow the parents access to the porch after the young'ins went to sleep."

Also about the front porch:
From my friend Judy: "Shelled peas many times on a porch like that."
Others gave good advice about being careful for "critters" and/or "snakes" in the grass...which is a real possibility here in Florida.

But one friend made a comment that rather caught me off guard and kind of spoiled the happy mood of the moment.
She said, "Do you own that property? Aren't there No Trespassing laws in every state?"

My first thought was not kind, so I had to pray before answering, but even that came with some difficulty.  Finally I just responded this way: "No I don't. Yes there are. I merely said I would "like" to explore and take more pictures. My Goodness! Can't a girl dream?"

She later retracted her comment, so perhaps she realized that she came across rather strongly...but I must admit, it made me think.  Was I wrong to want to "explore" this place?  Was I truly "trespassing" by stepping out of my car to take pictures?  I realize that sometimes in my zeal to get the best pictures there are times that I may "step over the line" to get a little bit closer, or to get a better perspective...but I guess I never honestly thought I was trespassing!  So this morning I am doing some internal retrospection into my heart, my motives, and my thoughts.  I certainly don't want to give even the appearance of doing something wrong or inappropriate at any time, even if my intentions were honest and noble...or just wanting to get the "BEST" shot!!  (hmmm, maybe a little pride there?)

Here are a few scriptural passages that came to my attention on this subject:

"Test all things;
hold fast what is good.
Abstain from every form of evil"
I Thessalonians 5:21-22

"Let love be without hypocrisy.
Abhor what is evil.
Cling to what is good."
Romans 12:9

"Be of the same mind toward one another.
Do not set your mind on high things,
but associate with the humble.
Do not be wise in your own opinion."
Romans 12:16

"If it is possible, as much as depends on you,
live peaceably with all men."
Romans 12:18

"Love does no harm to a neighbor;
therefore love is the fulfillment of the law."
Romans 13:10

Okay, Lord, I get it.  Pride is something I need to work on, as is my own opinion of myself and what I think.  Perhaps this friend, even in what I considered to be an unfair judgment, was sent to remind me to be more careful in my "zeal"...watch out that I do not "step across that line"... not just in taking the "best pictures", but in all of my life.  It is so easy to sometimes blur the lines a little bit here and there, and before we know it we have stepped too far out of line.

Romans 13:12-14 says:

"The night is far spent,
the day is at hand.
Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness,
and let us put on the armor of LIGHT.
Let us walk properly, as in the day,
not in revelry and drunkenness,
not in lewdness and lust,
not in strife and envy.
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ,
and make NO provision for the flesh,
to fulfill its lusts."

So, I may never get that perfect picture of the backside of that house...unless there is someone to give me permission to do so.  Perhaps the Lord has given me this little "warning" to protect me from harm!  Who knows? There may be some critters hiding there after all!

Thank You, Lord, for your watchcare over my body as well as my soul.  Amen.

Happy 4th of July! Some Random Thoughts and Memories - UPDATED 7-4-16

I originally posted this on 7/3/2013.  A lot of things have changed in our lives since that Independence Day three years ago.  But some things have not changed and hopefully never will.  We still gather with whatever family and friends we can bring together to celebrate the holiday, holding fast to as many of the old family traditions as we can.  I am so thankful that we still have that freedom in our country...and I pray we never lose the freedoms that we hold most precious.  This is a presidential election year, and it  would appear that a lot of those freedoms and rights are being tested and tried in our country's midst.  We need to pray for our nation as we make decisions that will affect our future generations in ways that could mean a great loss of many freedoms that we take for granted right now.

Original Post 7/3/2013 (with a few additional current pictures and comments):

I know you may not understand why I am posting a picture of a doll for the 4th of July, but that's okay. You don't have to understand. I just wanted to take her picture all dressed up for the holiday! This is my "Margie Doll", named after my Aunt Margie, who gave the beautiful doll to me for my 7th birthday! I won't tell you how old that makes my Margie Doll. Let's just say that she would qualify for a senior discount at most restaurants.

The Original "Margie"...My Aunt Margaret Tedlie Moss a  "real doll"!
I don't know how I found such favor in the sight of my sweet Aunt Margie to receive such a wonderful gift for my seventh birthday, but as you can see, it is a gift I have treasured.  My mother actually made the dress that my Margie doll is wearing.  She also made her a couple of other dresses that she wears for other occasions. (Click for picture of Margie in her Christmas Dress, with her friend "Valerie", another special doll)
(see the Page "A Few of My Favorite Things")

Here is a picture of my wonderful Mother, all decked out for the 4th of July also:
My Mother, Always the patriot!!
(1917-2006)

This is one of my favorite pictures of my mother, Dorothea Tedlie Mursch, waving her flag proudly on the 4th of July! I sure do miss her.

Tomorrow (2016- we already did on 7/2/16! Couldn't wait!)  we will celebrate the 4th of July in the traditional family manner...we will have a gathering of some friends and family, bar-b-que some chicken, eat potato salad, deviled eggs, baked beans, and all the other good stuff that goes along with that...and then we will make homemade ice-cream, following my mother's recipe.(Click on link to go to "It's Recipe Thyme-some of My Mother's Recipes" , and then scroll down on the page until you come to the recipe.

Yes, holidays and birthdays have always been special occasions in our family.  I am so thankful to have grown up in such a family.  Here are some pictures from some of our 4th of July memories from the past.  These are pretty special to me, as now my Daddy is in heaven,(4/19/2011) and so is our son Matthew. (5/28/2014) *UPDATE 7/4/2026...Since this was written, my oldest brother Russell also went to heaven on  4/29/2019, and my mother in law Vivian also entered heaven in August of 2018.
Our son Matthew, 7/4/2009

My grand-nephew Jack, 7/4/2009

Our grandson Noah - 7/4/2009

I come by my doll interests honestly...my mother loved dolls too...so that is another family "tradition" passed down to me.

This is my "Baby Elva" doll, all dressed up for the holiday  (7/4/2016)

I guess you could say that I am just an old fashioned girl.
yeah, that's me, "several" years ago, dressed up
like an old fashioned girl
I like doing things the way we did when I was growing up.  I enjoy carrying on the family traditions, playing with my dollies, dressing up for fun, having tea parties, acting silly, laughing and enjoying life with my family and friends. I also look forward to sharing these thoughts with you, because you are my special friends.  Many of you may never actually visit with me in person, but we share many wonderful treasures of memories and dreams together through our journals and daily posts. (weekly, monthly, whatever, whenever!)

So thank you for indulging me this evening while I allowed you a little glimpse into my childish heart. You know, Jesus said

"Unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:3)

In another place He said,

"Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven."
(Matthew 19:14)

I know He didn't mean that we should play with dolls and act childish, but He was speaking of the faith and humility of a little child...that we should trust in God like a child, and not worry ourselves about things over which we have no control. We ought to:

"become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain." (Philippians 2:15-16)

Some final words to us personally as we celebrate our independence as a nation in a time of great turmoil and anxiety and disappointment in our current national and world situation:

"Rejoice in the Lord always.  Again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to all men.  The Lord is at hand.  Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;  and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:4-7
Amen...and Have a Blessed and Happy 4th of July!

Moments of Grace-Humility

"God resists the proud,
but gives grace to the humble."
James 4:6

The lovely flower pictured above is a "Pink Perfection" Camellia...the first blossom of the year on the bush in my yard.  This flower truly lives up to its name...perfectly pink, and perfect in its form and shape and beauty. As I posted this picture on my Facebook page yesterday, there were several comments written about its beauty and what a wonderful picture this was. One dear friend even complimented me on my photography skills.  I was extremely humbled by this comment because that particular friend is truly a gifted and professional photographer, and her photos bless me every day. This was my first lesson of the new year to experience grace and humility.  The photograph is beautiful, but I do not take any credit for that. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...and God knows how to use even this amateur photographer to bring glory to His name in sharing pictures of His marvelous creation.  That is my purpose and goal with every picture that is posted here or anywhere else.

Moments of GRACE - One Word for 2016

Okay, drum roll......I have been deliberating what my "One Word" for 2016 should be.  A couple of months ago, while listening to the radio on my way to work, I heard a song that seemed to "speak" to me...along with other thoughts and insights hitting me at the same time...and the word GRACE just seemed to leap out at me, so much so that I grabbed something from my purse to write on, found a pen, and as I was driving down the road (I know, dangerous), I wrote this note to myself:

Not the part about the "coupons due to expire soon", but the note scribbled on the end..."One word 2016 GRACE and  "Your Grace Finds Me"  was the song.  Click HERE for "Your Grace Finds Me" by Matt Redman.  The song was a part of the interview that the radio (JoyFm) station was having with Louie Giglio about his new book entitled "The Comeback".  I haven't read the book yet, but it is on my list of books to read for 2016.

Anyway, back to the "One Word" event...that day I determined that my One Word for 2016 would be "GRACE".  I even wrote another note and put it in my Bible so I wouldn't forget...along with some other notes from the book of Esther 4:14, which really didn't have anything to do with grace, but it definitely had something to do with what I was going through at that moment in time, and it was definitely a test of "grace".

But here we are in the first week of January, 2016, and I still was not exactly sure that this was supposed to be my "One Word" for 2016.  I kept trying to come up with something better. Why? I don't know. Not sure why I am trying to avoid the word "Grace".  But I have been. So tonight I thought to myself, "Okay Pam, you need to nail this down. It is time to quit playing around with this and get down to business.  The year will be half over before you discover your One Word if you don't pay attention to what God has been trying to tell you all along."

So I thought I would do the old open up the Bible and find some kind of answer trick. You know the one, where you open the Bible and point to any verse that happens to appear and proclaim that to be God's message to you today? Who hasn't ever done that?  I admit, I have.  Well, anyway, I actually opened up one of my little devotional books that I like to read, and this bookmark fell out on my lap:

Well, would you look at that???? What does that verse say at the bottom?
"The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you."  Romans 16:20

and THEN it says "Moments of GRACE"

Still not totally convinced, (yeah, I know, dense, stubborn, not full of GRACE), I turned the little bookmark over to the back and what does it say?

Need I say more? God got His message through to me.  My ONE WORD for 2016 is

GRACE
and I expect that He will be demonstrating many moments of GRACE to me throughout the year.  As I become aware of this "great Grace, such grace", I hope to share these special moments with you. I have a feeling I have some things to learn.  We'll start with this verse:

"But He gives more grace.  Therefore He says:
God resists the proud,
but gives GRACE to the humble."
James 4:6

Yes, I expect I have a LOT to learn.  Humility is not one of my better traits.

So, are you ready to join me?  Let's start watching for those special "Moments of Grace"...and

"May these fill your cup of blessing as you reflect on the love of Christ Jesus for you today and always!"  (bookmark from CTA, Inc.)
