Friday Foto Friends...Hailstones and Barbie...

Good Friday morning! I am sure you are wondering what this picture is all about:
Have you figured it out yet?  Well, that round marble looking thing in the middle is a hailstone on our back porch! Yes, we had hail a couple of nights ago during a fierce thunderstorm that blew through here with many flashes of lightning and loud thunder and high winds and rain, and hail! Thankfully no damage was done here or anywhere around that I've heard of, but it was scary for a few minutes until it worked its way across the county. We could still see the frequent flashes of lightning in the distance for quite a while.  So, I would like to say "thank you" to the Lord for protecting us during that storm. It could have done some serious damage!

I really don't have any new pictures to share with you this week.  Seems like we've been busy with stuff and also just trying to stay inside where it's cool.  No exciting bird activity beyond what I've already shared earlier.  I'll show you this picture again of Mr. Bluebird on top of his house, looking rather angry about something! I posted this on Facebook yesterday and asked for people to come up with a caption.  There were a few good ones.  Actually, this is the last time I've seen this fella or his mate this week. They came back and checked out the house again, and then flew away and haven't been back since. I think they finally gave up on nesting this time.  It's just too doggone hot out there for man or beast! Maybe that's why he looks so angry! His wife was refusing to settled down on the nest and make new babies! LOL.

So, since I don't have any REAL pictures to talk about or share this week, how about this?

Did you know there was going to be a movie about Barbie? And Ken too, of course?

I've been hearing bits and pieces here and there from other Barbie fans. I am not really in the loop nor do I keep up with the latest Barbie trends.  But I was a huge Barbie fan way back in the beginning of her life.
***News flash***  Update: I did not know about the concerns regarding this movie when I posted this today.  I have been made aware that there are some issues that might make you want to think twice before taking your daughter or granddaughter to see this movie, or even watching it yourself! I apologize for not doing my homework first. Thank you, friends, who have shared this information with me.
This is when I got my first (and only) Barbie doll...for my 10th birthday, yes, that's me in the middle with my special friends who came to my party, and there's my Barbie doll down in front of me. She was a gift from my grandparents.  My cousin Becky, standing on my left as you look at the picture (but on my right in reality), also received a Barbie doll that year from our grandparents. And so the saga began.

Here's that same Barbie today, standing in her crystal palace (in my china cabinet), where she is being preserved for all time...

When one of my blogging and Facebook friends, Susie Klein, a.k.a. Walking Butterfly, showed a picture of her Barbie doll on FB the other day and mentioned this new movie, I had to go tell my Barbie the news, and she immediately wanted to get out of the crystal palace and come see the world around her...so I managed to find her old bathing suit (and amazingly at age almost 63 she can still fit into it!), because she said she was so pale and needed some sunshine before she gets ready to go see the "real world"...and she sat out in the sunshine for a little while, soaking up the sun and enjoying hearing the birds singing.

But that's as far as we got. No, I am not going to start a new blog about my Barbie. She is retired now and enjoying a quiet life out of the limelight.  But back in the day, when she was brand new, my cousin Becky and I spent many hours in the summertime together with our Barbies.  We created a wonderful little world for them. This was before Mattel went all out with all of the new fancy stuff they have for Barbie these days. We had to create our own Barbie houses and furniture, sew their own clothes, and make up their dialogue as we pretended where they were going and what they were doing. We didn't have any Ken dolls either.  We were still too young at age 10 to be pretending all that boy-girl stuff. LOL.  I wish I had pictures to show you how marvelous our houses were that we built out of pieces of cut wood paneling that we could tape together and make different rooms. We hung curtains on the walls, made furniture out of boxes and plastic dish detergent bottles, complete with upholstery, we found little dishes and things to make a kitchen and made appliances out of boxes.

Sadly, all I have left of my amazing creation is this box of some old Barbie clothes, mostly homemade by me, using scraps of material from what we had at home from making our own clothes.

The only remnant of our creative talents in making furniture and other items is this "radio", shown below:

I used an old Kodak black and white film box from the 60's to make that radio! That is a relic in itself!
(and look at that fabric on that skirt...definitely from the 60's!)

You may ask whatever happened to the Barbie house, etc.? Well, after I was married, my then 5 year old niece Debbie saw my Barbie doll and house stored at my parents' home,  and asked if she could "please, please, please play with it"? And so I cleaned it all up and did some necessary repairs and "refurnishing" after it had been packed away for quite a few years, and I gave it to her for her 5th birthday. She was beyond thrilled!!
I know she loved it and played with it for a long time, but then, like what happened to me, my niece grew up and put away her dolls and the Barbie house went someplace in their attic or who knows where. I was thrilled when my sister found this little box of clothes and my Barbie doll and they gave it back to me a few years ago.  I promised my niece that I will make sure her name is on it in my "will", but for now Barbie is in a safe place where she can live out her years in peace and quiet.

1 Corinthians 13:11-12

11 "When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, (or woman!) I put away childish things.
12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known."

So tell me, how many of you played with Barbies when you were young? Do any of you still have your dolls? I also had a "Midge" doll, but she disappeared somewhere along the way.  Do any of you plan to see the new Barbie movie? *** I am sure I won't, unless I can find it on TV someday,*** (see my update above) but it was still fun to walk  down memory lane and remember the happy days I spent so many years ago in the land of make believe with my Barbie doll and my cousin Becky.

Okay,  that's it for this Friday Foto Friends.  If I find something else more newsworthy to write about later, I will, but hopefully this will bring back some fun memories from your childhood days too...

  1. Oh ya, these summer storms seem particularly fierce this year. I'm a big coward when it comes to lightning. I loved seeing these old photos! You were totally the little girl my mother wished she had. (lol) How she loved giving me dolls, making their clothes, etc. -- and I could care less. There's a photo somewhere of my 11th(?) birthday, I'm holding my new Barbie and looking positively underwhelmed. While I didn't participate in the Hodgepodge, my 'back in the day' story would have been how we, as children, used to rely on our imaginations and materials to fashion our own virtual reality. One of my favorite toys was a rifle made out of scrap lumber and penny nails.

Nope, I've no interest in the new Barbie movie. Not b/c of the dolls, but the producers' WOKE agenda. Here a link to a Christian blog about them incorporating LGBQT+ into the show. Ugh.

    1. Thank you for sharing that info with me regarding the Barbie movie. I had no idea. I have updated my post above to reflect this new information. That makes me so sad. Why can't they leave this subject alone and out of every single decent thing??? Don't get me started. It is so disgusting what they are doing to our younger generation. It truly breaks my heart. Glad I'm not raising children or any young grandchildren...but I still worry about all those sweet innocent children out there. Oh, I made a "rifle" out of scrap lumber too. I used to play like I was a Pioneer at my fort fighting off the indians. LOL. Can't say that anymore either nor play like that. I'm glad we grew up when we did.

  2. I played with Barbies and my aunt made clothes for them and sold them for 10 cents each! I don't have many things from my childhood but I've bought some Barbie dolls and Skipper. I have 2 cases now too. I love dolls...as you know. I don't plan to see the movie though. We saw a feral cat and I remember you mentioned that you have seen them. Only one hike this past week! I had cabin fever and HAD to get out! Enjoy your day!

    1. Glad you were able to get out and take a hike this week. The storms have been wicked here, but usually late in the day, so we try to get out early. I never had a Skipper doll, but did have a Midge with red hair (like me). She's long gone now. Take care and don't get overheated or too bad of cabin fever! LOL.

  3. I also played with my Barbie doll which was much like yours and kept all of my Barbie things. My Dad made me a Barbie car out of an old sewing machine drawer that he welded wheels on. I put a box covered with a piece of fabric in it for a seat and was thrilled beyond measure with it. Mandy never showed much interest in Barbie's but Piper did. I gave my Barbies and case full of homemade clothes to her and she still plays with it. She also plays with her dolls a LOT.
As for the new Barbie movie, from some reviews I've read it is a very modern Barbie with modern ideas about marriage, LGBTQ views, traditional roles, etc. Make of that what you will. I haven't seen the movie and probably won't since I rarely go to them. However this morning is an exception. I'm going to see the Jim Cavieziel move about child trafficking with my sister. I think it's called "Freedom". I'm not sure.
I hope you have a wonderful Friday!
    Blessings,
    Betsy

    1. I did not know about the LGBTQ issues in the Barbie movie, so I have written an update above since I found that out. Why can't they leave things alone? It's so very sad and disgusting. I heard about the "Freedom" movie. That sounds like it would be eye opening, but from the right perspective. Praying about that message getting out there. I'm glad your Piper enjoys your Barbie things. I never had any little girls or granddaughter, so I was happy my niece wanted my Barbie house, etc. Now she's a grandmother herself! She never had any girls until she remarried and had two step-daughters. Now they are grown. Life goes on and on and on... So glad you are back home safe and sound!!

  4. I love your photos with Barbie. I enjoyed playing with Barbie. I don't have a great desire to see the movie. Hope you have a lovely weekend.

  5. I never had a Barbie doll. I think I was just a bit too old when they were introduced to the world. But my girls loved them and played with them all.the.time. There is a story here--- one Barbie kept losing her head, so my older girl taught my younger one how to play Guillotine Barbie aka Marie Antoinette.
About Amish country...last week's FFF. You will be amused by the python story!

  6. Wow, your Barbie looks good for her age. I guess I was rough on my Barbie dolls - I remember cutting Midge's flip off and gave her a pixie cut. I wasn't into Barbie that much because in the 4th grade, the Beatles came out and I went from being a girl who played with Barbies to a wannabe teenager. I put my dolls away for good. I was always more attached to my baby dolls, rather than the fashion dolls.

No I won't be seeing any Barbie movie. I wasn't that big of a Barbie fan to go as an adult. PLus I've heard about it and just won't subject myself to more wokeness. I'm sick of it.

  7. Hi Pamela! Thanks for visiting my blog today. I did play with Barbie in the 60's. I had Barbie, Ken, Midge and Allen. I remember using a Kleenex box for a bed. We made houses with cardboard. I loved my Babie clothes closet. I think I had a lot because my mom worked at a Toy Store. We even got to a special party hosted by Mattel and Paul Winchel and his character doll, Jerry Mahoney were there. My dolls disappeared after my mom found Ken in bed with Barbie! I don't plan on seeing the movie and I know my kids will not let my grands go. I do have an antique Barbie I got somewhere because it remind me of my mom. Wow on the huge hail. Take care!

  8. Good grief!! They just try ruining everything these days! Thank you for the info about the Barbie movie.
I never played with Barbies - I don't know if they even had them when I was a little girl but I did give Amber some when she was a child and she loved them. Her girls have played with Barbies in their younger years. No, we will not be going to see this movie!

  9. I had that same Barbie with the striped bathing suit, but mine had black shoes. For a time, I played with Barbie and even got a new Barbie with bendable legs when I was 12 or 13. I didn't play with her much after and all of that went to my little sisters. Fun memories!

    1. Thanks Susie! You got me started on this with your pictures of your pretty Barbie! My cousin Becky had one with the Blonde bubble haircut, similar to yours. We grew up in a much kinder, simpler time. So thankful for that!!

  11. Hi Pam. I had a Barbie that looked just like that. My daughters played with it, in addition to the many other Barbies they had. Don't have any of them any more. I kind of wish I had my original Barbie. So glad you kept yours. We don't go to many movies, so I won't see the Barbie movie, but I had not heard much about it, so thanks for the heads up. Have a good weekend.

    1. I was surprised that my Barbie survived the years with my young niece! I was happy she actually took really good care of her. I kind of wish she'd saved the Midge doll too, because she actually looked more like me...red hair, blue eyes and freckles. That's why I added her to my little Barbie "family". But she's long gone and I looked them up on Ebay and decided she'll have to stay long gone! LOL. Fun memories. Hope you have a good weekend too. I know you are getting anxious to get moved into your "new" house. It won't be long now, I guess!! Take care.

  12. I was a bit too old for Barbie when she was created. In 2000, we had a horrendous hailstorm hit our city. A huge amount of houses had roof damage. A neighbor at that time had her car totaled. Anyone in the south part of town either had roof damage or car damage. Peace and blessings to you and yours.

  13. We have had some storms, haven't we? I was a Barbie fan, but...well...yeah...all this political stuff etc. Wishing you a beautiful Sunday/coming. smiles

  14. Oh wow, your Barbie is beautiful! And I love that you have pictures of the day you received her! How special! Yes, playing Barbies with my cousins growing up was so much fun! My mom had a coworker who would make Barbie clothes for my Barbie dolls. One year my Barbie got some inflatable furniture for Christmas. Haha! I love the radio you made! That took a lot of creativity!

  15. We had hail recently. Thought we had a tornado at first but, thankfully, there doesn't seem to have been one. Startled me though. I kept watching the skies.
Our Bluebirds have raised several brood's so far. So have the Hummingbird's. They're all over our yard now. So pretty. I love watching the bird's.
Sorry I'm late with commenting. I haven't been well all weekend. Feeling better now.
    Love xx

    1. Glad to know you are feeling better. Sorry you were not feeling well all weekend. Sometimes I think the heat gets to us in one way or another. Take care and try to stay cool and well hydrated this week. You have seen baby hummingbirds? I've never seen a baby hummingbird before. But we have 4 females fighting over the feeder. I probably should have put out more feeders, but it's enough trying to keep up with one! Our bluebirds seem to have given up and moved on. I think it is just too hot for them. Take care my friend.
