Tuesday 4: Personal Snapshot

 Personal Snapshot

Welcome back to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 where we try to get you talking, thinking and making new friends while you get to know old friends better.

Today is a hodgepodge of question for you to ponder:

1. What TV programs that everyone else loved/loves did/do you dislike and why? Conversely, what program did you love while everyone else thought it was awful? (or maybe a song, book..etc)
I didn't like "the Wizard of Oz" as a child. It always made me very anxious, and honestly, to this day, if I were to watch it (which I probably won't) it still makes me feel very anxious.   As far as a program or song or book that I liked but others didn't...I will have to think about that one for a while.  For once I am drawing a blank.

2 Do you resent serving without thanks or do you see a higher purpose behind it?   No, I don't resent serving others without thanks...as a mother we often have had to do things for our children or families that no one ever thought to say thank you for...but when you love your family you do things without expecting to be thanked.  The same goes for our jobs in the outside world...yes, we get paid to work, but oftentimes we find we have to go beyond the call of duty to get the job done and do things behind the scene that others don't realize or ever recognize.  When I think about the things I've had to do throughout the years that went without recognition, I think about this verse in the Bible:
I Corinthians 10:31
"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."

If I do these things as serving the Lord, I know that even if I never receive recognition or thanks here for my work, God knows my heart and He sees what I do and I will be blessed in ways that are eternal. I don't need man's recognition to make my life better.

"Let all that you do be done in love"
I Corinthians 16:14

3. What flavor ice cream is your favorite and how do you like it served? (Sunday, Blizzard, cone, dish?) What toppings make your day?
At this point in life my favorite flavor of ice cream is vanilla, because you can do so much more with it...like add peaches or strawberries, or hot fudge and chopped nuts and whipped cream, or make a Root Beer Float or a chocolate milkshake by adding chocolate to it.  I actually don't each much ice cream anymore. I think I must be lactose intolerant and so I have pretty much given up ice cream, except for an occasional scoop on pie or cake.  I prefer yogurt, and usually add fresh fruit and granola to it to make it extra good.  However, we usually make homemade vanilla ice cream for the 4th of July if we have a family gathering at our house.  Not sure yet what we are doing this year.

Here I am last year, pretending to be cranking the ice cream maker.  We now use an electric "crank", so we have to take our turns pretending to crank it. It's a family tradition.

And here's the taste test!

I hope we can do something together this year, but not sure who can come. My sister's hubby just had some major back surgery TODAY (Monday), and I don't think he will be ready for a two hour ride to our house by the 4th of July.  He did come through the surgery very well, according to the Doctor, but when my sister called me he was still in recovery.  If you would, please say a little prayer for my BIL Art.  He's older than I am, and the older we get, the more difficult recovery of any kind of surgery can be, so I know he will appreciate all the prayers.

Here's a recent picture of my brother in law Art and my sister Doris, when we got together in April for their birthdays.

Okay, Back to the questions:

4. How many pairs of shoes do you own? How many handbags? Do you use/wear them all? Should you weed them out?
I am not a shoe or purse fanatic.  I have basic shoes for every day and church. I recently bought a new pair of casual sandals for summer,

but I prefer to wear my Skechers walking shoes.  And I probably have some old shoes in the closet that could be thrown out...some old pairs of heels that I never wear, even though they aren't high heels, they just aren't comfortable. I have one pair of navy blue low heels and one pair of black low heels that I wear with dresses for church. I never wear white shoes because I have "big feet", and white makes them look bigger. LOL.  ("Vanity, thy name is woman..." LOL).

Handbags...I usually just use one bag at a time, unless I am going someplace fancy, which I rarely do. I carry my every day bag to church because It's just too much trouble to keep shifting things back and forth for two hours.  I've gotten lazy in my old age.  I do have some clutch bags that I used to use for church, but I probably should just get rid of them because I never use them anymore.

I've probably talked about this handbag before.  I carried this bag with me to work for probably close to 15 years, I'm not kidding! I bought it from an elderly woman who actually made this bag. It was the best purse I ever had...it was perfect for my job as a bookkeeper, because I could put the bank bag inside to go make the deposit at the bank and no one would ever suspect I was carrying a large sum of money with me!  It is washable and the straps are made of a very tough nylon that has never frayed or torn.  I only finally quit using it because the lining started to fall apart, but after being used for so many years literally EVERY day...it was time to retire when I retired.  I still have it and hate to get rid of it. I keep thinking maybe I'll find someone who can sew in a new lining for me and I can carry it another 15 years. LOL.   Isn't it beautiful????  LOL.

Okay, I've probably driven you all crazy with my stories, so it is time to quit for the night.   Now be sure to go visit the other friends who are sharing their "Personal Snapshot" HERE.  Thank you, Annie, for these fun and thought provoking questions each week!

  1. I do love that purse, Pamela, and I can certainly understand why you've hung onto it. I'm not a purse-picky person; I'm using the same one Danny gave to me several years ago for my birthday, although I do have more. I agree that it's just too much trouble to change out purses - I'm always worried that I'll forget something in the re-packing.
Praying for Art and for Doris!
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you for the prayers for Art and Doris. Art actually called us on the phone this morning and sounded great! he had a lot of work done and I am amazed he could even find his phone, let alone call us! LOL. Either they have him on some pretty good medicine, or he's truly a miracle! Maybe a bit of both. Yes, changing purses is always an ordeal...I carry a lot of little emergency items for both myself and hubby. As sure as I leave something out, we'll need it. I hope you have a blessed and wonderful rest of your week.

  2. First, I had to pause and say a prayer on behalf of Art. Since Tom had spinal surgery 18 months ago (for osteomylitis), I sure can empathize with what they're going through. Will he have to wear that 'flack jacket' (brace)?
I've mixed feelings about 'serving.' At my last workplace, we were mandated to perform a certain number of hours in charitable service -- sometimes to organizations I didn't especially care for -- and our boss made sure to broadcast what good employees she had. Your comment, " I don't need man's recognition to make my life better." is so perfect.
I think I've less than a dozen pair of shoes, and 3 purses. Probably the most I've ever owned at one time, but they were estate sale bargains. Yes, that bag is gorgeous. I'd love to have something like that!

    1. Thank you for the prayer for Art. Amazingly, he called us this morning to tell us how great he was doing already! With the amount of work they did, I am thinking they must have him on some pretty good medicine to be feeling that good already! LOL. But he was in great spirits. He doesn't know yet about the brace. He said the Dr. will talk to him about that and other things tomorrow before he goes home. Re: serving being mandated...that usually doesn't go over very well, especially if it is to places you don't always appreciate their purpose. I may not be quite as "charitable" about that either. But then again, if we remember the verse about doing it all for the glory of God, we can focus on Him rather than on what is around us, and that helps make unpleasant situations much better. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves to do that, however. I do understand that. Sounds like our shoes and purse numbers are very similar. And several of my shoes need to be discarded for lack of use. Thank you for liking my very old bag. It's amazing how well it has held up for so long. I really do wish I could get the lining redone and then continue using it! LOL. That's just the way I am when I find something I really like! Have a blessed day my friend.

  3. I agree with you about The Wizard of Oz. I truly disliked it and was so frightened by the flying monkeys and witch. Awful movie for children I think. Lovely purse. Once we get used to a pair of shoes or a bag we tend to just rely on them I think. We love our comfort!!

    1. Yes, you expressed exactly what I felt about the Wizard of Oz! Just thinking about it makes my hands sweat! LOL. And yes, we do love our comfort. At this stage in life comfort is much more important to me than style. Thankfully, we live in an area with many retired folks and we all pretty much feel the same way, so no pressure to keep up with the "Joneses"! LOL.

    1. I do have a pair of skechers, black leather-look flats, that I wear to church quite often. Especially because I sing in the choir I need to have comfortable shoes on for the many times we are standing to sing. But our church is also very casual and since we are in Florida, you may see just about anything, but always clean and modest. We are not as big about fashion as we are about hearts and souls.

  6. I know what you mean about some films unsettling. I've had some do that to me also and they weren't even horror movies. For me, I don't like dolls. They are just too creepy for me. I didn't play with them as a young girl either. I know ... another piece of the puzzle. *lol*
    Fun post.
    Blessings xx

    1. I understand your feelings about dolls. Since I have a LOT of dolls in my house, I've noticed that not everyone is as comfortable around them as I am. Although there are some dolls that do creep me out as well, but the ones I have are all sweet and have good memories attached to them. If you ever come to visit give me a little notice and I will make the sure dolls are all out of sight. I prefer to enjoy live company anytime I can have it! :)

  7. I have written Art and Doris' names on a list right by my computer. I love that purse. It looks like you. My purse right now is a teal (my favorite color) Vera Bradley purse. I have three of them. One I bought on sale, another one was given to me, actually I got to pick it out. I just donated a different purse to the church rummage sale. I decided I didn't like it. Shoes, I am not sure of. Now winter boots, I have several pairs. (Long story!) About your celebration with Doris and Art, you can celebrate anytime. Just think up a reason. Peace and blessings to you and yours.

  8. I am late getting to Monday's posts and am trying to catch up with all my friends this evening. Your question about white shoes... I do wear white sneakers and I have a pair of white croc-like sandals that I wear. My feet are big so it doesn't really matter what color my shoes are... they still look big! LOL I enjoyed your post and think you should find someone to re-line your purse. It is very pretty!! xo

  12. I'm surprised to hear that about The Wizard of Oz. I agree, when you love your family you don't need to be thanked for helping them. I love Costco Kirkland vanilla ice cream. I'm glad your brother in law is doing okay. Cute shoes and a beautiful bag.

  13. When I read about your BIL, I thought, Getting older is not for the weak. We oldies are tough.
Love your answer for resenting doing good things-- all for the glory of God.

  14. I live on the Gulf Coast. Finally getting rain. Family was in Ireland-and Scotland with two little grandsons, so I watered for them. They return and the Lord sends rain. Lol. I love it. I sent videos of the palm trees in my yard swaying and the whistling of the wind to my prayer text group…friends said they could smell ocean. Almost always a breeze here in paradise in Florida. This is perfect area. Love your sweet blog. I do not love the canned questions at all but you make your blog interesting.
