Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!

Thursday Thankfulness and Friday Foto Friends
Here it is Thursday already...where does the time go? It's been a busy week, filled with mostly good things. Yesterday, June 14th, was Flag Day, the day we celebrate the adoption of our American Flag on June 14, 1777. (The two links above with give the history of Flag Day and the actual history of our American Flag.)
We proudly display our flag every day, however we have noticed that this particular flag has faded a bit in the sun, so I have ordered a new one to replace it. Hopefully it will arrive before Father's Day so I can give it to my hubby as a gift. He takes great pride and pleasure in putting the flag outside each morning. If he forgets or if I get to it first, I enjoy putting it out as well, and oftentimes you can hear me singing the Star Spangled Banner when I do. The birds in the treetops get very silent and listen attentively until I am done. Then they start their own songs again. (well, maybe not really, but it makes for a good story! LOL). Do you have an American Flag and do you put it out daily or just for holidays?
On Monday evening I was pleasantly surprised to receive a phone call from a couple of dear old friends, whom I have not seen in over 10 years, asking if we could meet for lunch on Tuesday. What a blessing! These ladies are sisters, and they used to be members of a church we ministered in many years ago, but they have since moved away from that area. Since that time they have both lost their husbands and have also been through so many other sorrows. Within the past year the friend on the right has lost (to natural causes), her only son, her husband, her sweet puppy dog, and then just a couple of weeks ago one of her grandsons in a tragic accident. The friend on the left lost her husband several years ago, and then more recently her son, and she recently had a hip replacement and is still recovering. But let me tell you, in spite of all that, they are still rejoicing in Jesus, and we spent such a beautiful time together giving thanks to the Lord for His love and faithfulness even in the hard times. I felt so blessed to be able to spend this time with them. Sonny's BBQ in Palatka was beginning to think we'd never leave, but they let us just sit and talk and talk. And then I grabbed a total stranger outside and asked him if he'd take our picture, and he was so gracious to do so. I'm so glad to have this picture to remind me to pray for these very sweet and special friends.
If you recall I mentioned in a previous post HERE, about hubby hurting his back...and I thank you all for your kind and gracious thoughts and prayers. He is feeling much better now, and we are so thankful. Especially because yesterday he had a pre-scheduled appointment for a special medical test that was going to require him to lay on a table for a period of time, and he was really dreading that with his hurt back. When he came out to the waiting room to meet me (after two hours), he was so thankful that it wasn't nearly as bad as he had feared. Part of the test was sitting up while a special infusion of dye went into his body, and then the laying down part only took about 15 or 20 minutes, so it really wasn't bad at all and he was SO relieved! Now we await the results, which we won't get for a week, but we continue to trust God for His grace and healing power. Prayers are still appreciated...
She took a little "catnap" out there and then went on her way. I guess the sunshine must have felt good.
Progress is coming to our little town. This building has been here for a long time, and used to be a bakery and deli/cafe'. It's been empty since the pandemic, and finally someone else has bought it and is putting a "Burger and Shakes" restaurant in there. It is actually done by the same people who own the Hog Wild Country Cafe' BBQ place on the outskirts of town, and they are expanding their business to be known as "Hog Wild Burgers and Shakes". We haven't tried it out yet, but it gives us another option for a place to get something to eat around here.
And MORE progress is being made in town...this lot is being cleared to make way for a Taco Bell! Even though I am not crazy about Taco Bell, still it is another option beside McDonalds for fast food. I fear our little town is growing...and even though we like to see more amenities and food places, that also means more people and traffic, so it is a mixed bag. However, I wish both of these places success and hope they will also mean more jobs for our local people.
Now here is a public service announcement. I kept noticing that little triangle with the exclamation mark in it on our thermostat, and also that little battery diagram in the top right corner that looked like it was "empty". Thankfully, so far, nothing had gone wrong with our AC system, but I was beginning to wonder what those symbols might mean.
Well, interestingly enough, one of my church friends mentioned on our church prayer warriors messenger page on Facebook that she had been having trouble with her AC and couldn't figure out why, and then someone told her to check the batteries in the thermostat. She did, and put in new batteries, and the AC started working again! So, I looked at our thermostat again and couldn't really figure out how to get it open so I called our AC repairman (they are very good and helpful), and they told me how to just pull the front section off and the batteries are inside that section. Two AA batteries! So I replaced them and then put it back together and now everything is just fine! It took a few minutes to bring the temperature back up to normal from when I took it apart, but soon everything was back to normal and we are cool as cucumbers! LOL.
So, have you looked at your thermostat lately? Does yours have a battery symbol showing? It only shows up when it is almost run out of juice. They said the batteries should be changed once a year. I wish they would have told me that when they installed this new thermostat a year ago! LOL. But at least I found out about it before I needed a service call! I am very thankful for that!
Now, as I mentioned before, our son and DIL are vacationing in her home state, and here's a few pictures they sent us:
Do you know who this is?
And Benton and the tiny fish!
They are having a good time, as you can see. We miss them here, but are happy for them to have this time away with her Dad and family.
And here's her Dad...you can see who really knows how to fish!!!
Well, I guess I'd better close this post...oh, one more thing, last night at midnight my sister texted me to tell me that we were under a severe thunderstorm warning. I was sound asleep, of course. She was awake and watching the weather and saw our area was under that warning. About the time I heard my phone ding for the text, I also heard a loud crack of thunder and saw the lightning, and then a LOT of rain came down. Although we did not sustain any damages or have any problems, I am thankful that my sister cared enough to send me that text to warn me of impending danger. That's a good Big Sister! I was too groggy, however, to send her back a text last night, so I waited until this morning to thank her for being our "Willy the Weatherman". (Does anyone remember him?) I am also thankful for the rain, as we needed it. I pray no one else was affected adversely in that storm last night...I saw that it apparently went across Alabama and Georgia, so I hope our friends up there are all okay.
One more thing (again)...I will close with this picture.
Dawn sent this to me the other day, and I just love it, and the fact that she sent it to me.
Thank you all again for your continued prayers for our grandson Noah and his fiance' Dawn, as they continue to seek God's direction for their lives. Seeing this gave me hope and peace of mind.
Okay, that's all folks!!
Have a blessed weekend!

The world does not need another Taco Bell. Yuck. *lol*
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what the triangle with the exclamation point means. Might wanna look at the directions that came with the A/C (if there are any). Hope it doesn't mean any problem. Maybe this will help:

Blessings xx
Thank you, Sparky. The triangle was a warning about the batteries about to go out. Once I replaced the batteries, the triangle warning went away along with the battery symbol. All is well now. But thank you for checking. How's your weather? Did you get any of those bad storms? We had more storms this afternoon, but it looks like it is up in GA too. Hope all is well with you. Blessings to you as well.
DeleteHow nice that you had a meet-up with old friends, those are the best type for sure. Looks like Benton and Rose could use some fishing lessons from her dad 😀 I did recognize Paul Bunyan and Babe. We also had thunderstorms Wednesday evening, but they were brief and without any incidents here.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Beatrice! Yes, the kids need to go fishing more often! They are having a good time, however. And I think her dad keeps them filled with good fresh fish to eat! Have a blessed and wonderful weekend!
DeleteYes, my flag is flying every day. Our street is well lighted, so all of us on this street leave out flags out 24/7. How fun to get that surprise visit from your old friends! We have construction going on everywhere here in Lakeland. Apartments, homes, and more business spaces are happening in every vacant spot. It's great that "the kids" are having such a good time and so nice to have quality time with Rose's family. Important and special!! Storms... we were spared last night but when I was on the phone with my sister, in Georgia, she lost power from that storm! Love & hugs, Pam!! xo
ReplyDeleteWe are still getting a lot of rain and storms already this morning. Looks like a stormy week ahead! We do need the rain, but I pray it will stay safe for everyone. I hope your sister's power came back on in a reasonable amount of time. That's always a bummer when it goes out! We just aren't the pioneer types anymore! LOL. Hope you are feeling better and that you will have a blessed weekend.
DeleteA friend I knew years ago had her birthday on flag day. Older lady I really liked especially being at church and knowing their family. I have a 🇺🇸 flag but not hung up now. I bought one to use when my daughter and I met with PGR for memorial service in a cemetery. I found you on a blog and I like your comments. I decided to read your blog which I like 👍. I hope we have rain soon as it's on the weather notes I have on my phone. We have batteries in our thermostat as well. I can still see the battery 🔋 is still full. We have a heat pump that is heater and air conditioning. Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteso happy you came to visit here on my blog, Becky! I just went over and got acquainted with you on your blog! I look forward to getting to know you better as the days go by!! I hope you have a blessed weekend too!! Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI'm so grateful to have Danny as my techie in the house as he is always in tune with things like thermostat issues and computer glitches. He can work wonders!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to hear that John's procedure didn't put too much stress on his back, and I will continue to pray for complete healing. It's hard enough getting hurt when you're young, but as we age, it seems, the cards can be stacked against us.
I have mixed feelings when a community succumbs to retail progress. Of course, it is good for business and employment, but we can always hope the integrity of the area won't be too compromised.
Blessings, Pamela!
Yes, you are blessed to have a resident "techie" in the house! We have to call on our kids and sometimes even they don't know the latest technology. When Noah was here he was pretty good with it, but he is the younger generation, so it is to be expected. Thank you for your kind words regarding John. Prayers are appreciated. I hope you have a blessed and wonderful weekend, Martha!
DeleteCautiously optimistic! What a relief that John was able to endure the procedure so well. Pam, I'm so humbled by your girlfriends' faith in spite of personal tragedies. Everyone has a story, and I know they're blessed you make time to listen.
ReplyDeleteWe recently had a similar life lesson with our thermostat. I've a habit of looking at the temperature every day (just to be sure I'm not having a hot flash, lol) -- but one morning the whole face was blank. Yep, we couldn't remember the last time we'd changed the batteries. Not only that, we couldn't remember where the instruction manual was. I finally found a .pdf on line + a YouTube how-to video. I know our service people would have had a good laugh if I'd called them to show us how to open the compartment.
Still praying!
Forgot to say, yes. We made it through the last 48 hours unscathed by the storms' wrath. Thanking the Lord for our weather radio and meteorologists who stay up all night keeping viewers' in the know. (Thank you for asking!)
ReplyDeleteSo many GOOD things about this post, but the best is that picture from Dawn. Both for what it says for us all, but most of all because it means that God is still on her mind, even so far away. He is SO good.
ReplyDeleteI'm also glad that the test went well without a lot of pain for John. I'm sure he was dreading it a bit and now it's over and done with for him. I'll continue to pray for good results.
To be able to see your friends again after so long must have been sweet indeed. I can't imagine the losses that they have both had, but I am very glad that you were all able to visit for a long time and catch up. They both look like wonderful ladies.
I read the thermostat information to Dennis because I'm sure to forget. Unfortunately I've noticed a big difference in my memory since I had covid and it's not for the better.
It was good of the AC guys to tell you what to do instead of charging for a visit. That's a good company to keep!
Rose and Benton look as though they're having a great time with her Dad. I'm so happy they are having this time with him. The older we get, the more I value time spent with those we love.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend my friend.
Blessings and love,
Betsy
Hi Pam. I do fly the American flag, but usually on holidays. I noticed on the news last night that there are bad storms in the south, so I am very glad you are OK. Thanks for that tip about the battery on the thermostat. I think most people get busy and never check that. So glad you had a nice lunch with your friends. Fun pictures of Rose and your son. Looks like they are having a nice visit with her family. I do hope that your grandson and his fiance find their way in life. It seems to be getting more and more difficult for young people of that generation. Prayers going out to them. It's always nice to catch-up with you. See you again soon!
ReplyDelete"...grandson Noah and his fiance' Dawn, as they continue to seek God's direction for their lives."
ReplyDeleteThey are wise to do this and God will lead them and bless them.
We don't have a flag. Our neighbors do. When the kids were younger we would start our homeschool day with the Pledge while looking out the window. These days I am in deep sorrow for the direction of our country and when I see the flag I remember my childhood, especially the 4th of July celebration of 1976, and count my blessings despite all that is going on. God help us.
Your sister IS good to you. I like that. Still have Noah and Dawn on my prayer list. It looks as though you will have some more options for getting a quick snack when you are out. Peace and blessings to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteOh I know how you feel about change - or progress. It's happening in my town as well and I don't like it. It reminds me of the hectic bay area that we left for a more quieter lifestyle. We even started this weekend, just talking about selling out and moving further into the mountains. I don't know - Seems every new house that sells on my street, single people have bought them - which brings in a different dynamic to the neighborhood. As well as loud music that we can now hear in our home. That never was the cause before. But after 16 years, I guess it is bound to change, as old neighbors sell out and move and others die.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.
