Wednesday Treasures

Was anyone else awake last night and notice the full moon?
That is how it looked here over Still Waters Pond around 3:00 a.m.

I was up walking the floor and having a cup of "Cozy Chamomile" herbal tea. I was having some tummy discomforts and found this very soothing.  Soon I went back to bed and was able to sleep for a while. Still not quite up to par this morning however, so I am staying home and taking it easy. Sadly, I am having to miss our monthly women's group at the church, but I wouldn't be very good company anyway. I'll probably be taking an early nap soon.

We've been getting some wonderful and much needed rain showers in the afternoons so far this week:
My little "butterfly garden" says thank you, God!

So here's curious story.  As you know, we were all excited about having the Bluebird couple move back in to the birdhouse to start a new family.  This would be the 3rd nesting this year, although I believe we are dealing with two different couples.

Everything seemed to be going just fine, with Mama and Papa Bluebird being very attentive to their nest every day.
But then over the past weekend I noticed that they weren't going and to and fro to the nest anymore, and Mrs. Bluebird was no longer sitting in her little window watching the world go by as was her usual habit each day.

On Sunday morning I noticed this juvenile Bluebird in the tree nearby, who has to be an offspring of one of the previous nestings:

He just sat there for a long time, looking around, but there were no other adult bluebirds anywhere in sight.

I really thought that to be very unusual. But that was Sunday, and I haven't seen this youngster anytime since, nor have I seen the adult bluebirds either. I mean, there has been zero activity around the birdhouse.

There has, however, been a LOT of young Cardinal activity around the bird feeder all week long.

They even come up on our porch rail and look inside our windows:

Quite an awkward looking youngster, wouldn't you agree?

Sometimes there are as many as six different Cardinals of varying ages flying around the yard, and before this past week, normally the bluebirds would have driven them all away.  But now the Cardinals and the Tufted Titmice and Chickadees have all happily taken over the back yard and the bird feeder without fear of remonstrance from the Bluebirds.

And so, after watching for the bluebirds to return every day and seeing no sign of them anywhere, I decided to take a peek inside the birdhouse to see what was going on, and this is what I discovered:
Yes, four beautiful blue eggs, sitting there totally unattended for almost a week now.  I left them there intact for now, but if no one comes back to take care of them soon, I will have to remove them from the birdhouse and clean it out for the next family.  So this is the second time I've found abandoned eggs in a nest.  The last nesting did produce one baby bird who fledged from the nest, but left behind two eggs.   I'm thinking either it must be just too hot for them to properly develop, or something happened to the parents that they had to abandon the nest.  That hawk that keeps flying around here might have had something to do with it, but I hope not. But, again, I have to remind myself this is nature. I can't control what happens and I have to let nature take its course and try not to interfere too much.

So moving along to something else that IS developing nicely...our "kids" are getting their new store building ready for the big move,  which is scheduled to take place during the week of July 24-August 1st, and hopefully ready to open on August 2nd.

Here is our sweet DIL Rose, working on painting the walls inside the new building for Dixie Cottage.  This is just a primer coat:

And here is her nephew Charles and sister Tina helping out by putting the primer on another wall:

One wall finished:

And another one also done:
Little by little it is all coming together. But of course they are still having to run the store in St. Augustine until July 23rd while trying to get things ready here at the new store.  A lot of work yet to be done. I wish we could help more, but hubby and I both have been dealing with health issues and just have to stay out of the way right now. Hopefully we will be ready for action when the new store has its grand opening.

This really doesn't have anything to do with the store, but then again in a way it does. This is the Interlachen caboose, which is situated just down the street from their new store.

This is all a part of the park in the old historic area of town, and is situated on the old railroad line that used to run through the downtown years ago:

Here it was all decked out for the 4th of July celebration:

Even the children's park has a train for the kids to play on:

And here is our town hall and historical museum, which is also just down the street from their store:

And this is just one of the many old historic homes in the downtown area, also decked out for the 4th of July celebration.  Our town had quite a nice parade and all kinds of activities all day long in the downtown parks, ending the day with fireworks.
Next year our kids hope to be able to participate in all of the community events since their store is situated right on the edge of the downtown area, within walking distance.  We are hopeful that our store will inspire others to think more about bringing new businesses to our old downtown area.  More of that "pioneer spirit" we were talking about yesterday!

Now, in keeping with my theme of Wednesday Treasures, here are some treasures that I found while looking in a dresser drawer for something else...these were stuck in a folder of some of my old writings,  and I had forgotten that I had them.  I already shared these on Facebook, so please excuse me if you've already seen them:

This is my paternal Grandmother, Elva Sowers Hill Mursch.  She's the one I've written about so much who was adopted as an infant.  I had forgotten that I had this picture, which is probably the youngest picture I've ever seen of her.

And these two are her two oldest children, my Aunt Marion and my father William F. Mursch:

And this was my paternal Grandpa William H. Mursch:

So these are my treasures for today. I hope you enjoyed them!

Now, here are some "treasures" from God's Word that we read in our morning devotions:

Matthew 11:25-30
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent
and have revealed them to babes.
26 Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.
27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

In particular, I love those last three verses, 28-30...Jesus promises to give us rest and to carry our burdens.  That is very comforting...don't you agree?

Have a blessed and peaceful day my friends!!

  1. Beautiful bluebirds and cardinals. I hope it's not too late for those eggs and that someone will come back and take care of them. I also hope you get to feeling better really soon.

    1. thank you, Cathy. Yeah, I wish the bluebirds would come back, but I don't think they will at this point. They've been gone too many days already. I think it's just been way too hot for these eggs in that birdhouse. That's the only explanation that really makes sense. It's sad, but I guess I just have to accept the ways of nature. God is still in control no matter what!

  3. I did enjoy those photos, Pamela! You've really got me thinking about doing some Ancestry searches.
Looks like the store is coming along great! It will be a blessing to the downtown area, that's for sure. When you mentioned the Interlachen 4th of July parade, it took me back to all those parades we went to in Oxford while my parents lived there. My kids loved them, and I miss them. There's nothing like living in or near a small town.
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Martha. Yes, I think you would enjoy the Ancestry research. And yes, we love the small town life. Our little historic downtown doesn't have much in the way of "business"...most of it is out on the highways, but it is nice they have preserved the historic areas and made it more park-like so it can still be enjoyed. The store is right on the edge of the historic area but also facing the highway, so it is a great location for business. We just pray God will bless it and it will prosper.

  4. Boy there is a lot going on. I wish your son and wife good success in their newest business venture.
Awww the sweet abandoned eggs - breaks my heart. Something must have happened to the parents because birds are very protective over their nests.

    1. Yes, there is a lot going on, but it's all good. Our kids are still young enough to handle it. My hubby and I have to pace ourselves, but I think the new adventure will be good for us. And yes, I tend to agree with you about the bluebird parents...although it is so very hot here that maybe they just realized these eggs were "cooked" too much and had to abandon them. It's sad, but everything seems to balance out in nature. I just miss seeing them out there.

  5. Just look at all the Red, White and Blue! Exciting times a'coming! I'm so sorry you've been under the weather; something's going around our Bible study group, as well. Seeing those sweet blue eggs grieves me; I know all is well in God's divine plan, but sometimes nature just hurts.

    1. Yes, exciting times are coming...busy times for certain! And yes, those pretty blue eggs grieve me too, but yes, we just have to let nature take its course no matter how difficult it may seem to us.

  6. Wonder if you'll ever know the mystery of the bluebirds. Your kids are crazy busy. Glad they have some help. I had to look twice at the photo of your paternal grandmother. You've probably been told this before...you favor her. She's a lovely lady.

    1. I don't think I will know the mystery of the bluebirds. I just have to wait and see if anyone comes back...but I seriously doubt it. It's been too long now. So much about nature we just don't understand, but somehow God seems to have it all under control. Yes, our kids are crazy busy. Between operating the existing store, preparing the new, still painting and building custom furniture for people all the time, and my DIL still works PT at Home Depot. Yes, they do stay too busy. This move will help eliminate the extra hours of driving time at least! Actually, until I saw this photo of my grandmother as a younger woman I did not realize how much I do favor her. I take after my father mostly, and he looks more like her than he did his father. Although I never saw it, my grandmother said her hair was reddish brown before it turned gray. My dad's was also very red and then dark auburn before gray, and that is what mine did. I still am not very gray, but it's coming a little at a time. LOL. Thank you for the sweet compliment. You are very kind.

  7. The birds are just lovely! I used to be a monitor for the bluebirds program at work and it was so sad to see those "not so lovely" parts of nature. We used to have starlings that would do horrible things to blusbird eggs and babies - UGH! Not sure if you have ever tried it, but my favorite drink when I have an upset stomach or am sick I drink hot ginger and honey crystals. You can get them on amazon I think.

    1. Thank you, Annsterw. We don't have Starlings here, but we have crows and hawks. But I kind of think the heat was just too high for these eggs. We've been having so much high 90's every day and I think it gets too hot in that birdhouse. I wish I could put it in a shadier spot, but then the other predators could get to it from the trees. Thank you for the tip on the drink. I may have to try it sometime when my tummy is upset. My issues are a bit further down the track than just the tummy, however. Some chronic issues that are sometimes difficult to manage. But thank you for the tip. That sounds like a good idea.

    2. I sure hope you both start feeling better soon!! The new store looks like it is coming along! It is kind of exciting, I think! Seems like a good location for them!! Do please keep us posted. I love the old pictures you shared! I missed them on FB so am happy to see them here. Love & hugs!!

  8. Thank you, Annie. I also get attached to my little nature "pets", and want to "fix" things, but I've learned I just have to let nature do its own thing. God has a way of taking care of them in ways we don't always understand.

  9. Beautiful bird photos but very sad about the eggs. I hope one of the parents returns to take care of them in time. I also liked the photos of the store and your town. I love to see places decorated up for the 4th of July. Some people think we shouldn't be patriotic for some odd reason in these strange times we're living in.
The family photos are wonderful. Your grandmother was lovely. Thanks for sharing all of this with us. The Bible verse is also one of my favorites. My problem is remembering not to pick my burdens back up after I've placed them in His care.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

    1. Thank you, Betsy! Yes, it is sad about the bird eggs, but I really don't think they will be back. It's already been too many days. They must have known there was something wrong with the eggs or they would never have left them I'm sure. Yes, I heard such rumblings about not celebrating Independence Day in the wake of the Roe v. Wade being overturned. So very sad for those who feel that way. You are correct, these are strange times we are living in, but all a part of what I believe are "the last days" before Christ comes for His church. Thank you for the kind words regarding my grandmother and the old family photos. They are very special to me indeed. I'm so glad I found them. Yes, leaving our burdens in Jesus' care is difficult for us. We tend to want to handle things "our way", not realizing how much better it would be for us to let God handle things His Way. It's all about trust and faith. Thank you for visiting. I'm so glad we've met. God bless you, Betsy.

  10. I don't know which I like better, the Bluebirds or the Cardinals. I would be so thrilled to have a Cardinal show up on my yard. Hope you feel better soon.

    1. I know you said you've never had a Cardinal come visit you. I guess they must be a more eastern bird. I've always seen them for as long as I can remember, but I've never lived any further west than Kansas or Michigan. If I could send you one, I would!

  11. Yes, the full moon kept me awake last night, shining brightly into our room. It was beautiful.

I wish Benton and Rose all the best as they move into their new location. I'm sure their shop will be a most welcome and delightful addition to Interlachen!

I hope you and John feel much better very soon. Among other things, this very hot and humid weather can make a person feel poorly.

    1. Thank you, Barbara! Maybe when the new store is up and running you and Gary can come up and visit sometime! You know we'd love to meet him! And thank you, we are getting better day by day. Not sure what's been going on exactly, but thankfully it's nothing serious...just aggravating. Take care and may God bless you both.

  12. Love the photos…Mother had a huge travel camper in a trailer park at Interlachen…she later moved it to property her brother bought in the area…then To her back yard…In The 1980’s my husband and kids and I preferred Myrtle Beach but on our second or third trip to Disney…we spent a eeek at the trailer going to St Augustine, Daytona, Crescent Beach, water park in Ocala etc…we spent a week at Disney in hotel…we liked the Interlachen Ocala areas, but when I moved here, I was glad son is on the Gulf…it is cooler and always a breeze…almost always…my condo is within walking distance of ocean and son family…I enjoy your blog..

    1. Interesting that your mother had a camper here in Interlachen. Small world! Yes, I am sure it is cooler on the coast with the sea breezes. But we are thankful to be here, not so close to the hurricane region when they happen. We seem to be just far enough inland and north to miss the worst of them. But it is a small town and not much happening around here...but then again, we kind of like that too. But yes, the Gulf is so lovely. I am sure you have a beautiful place. What a blessing!

    2. Prayers please but there has not been a severe hurricane in this area in years and years…or so…my family lived here during one but nothing happened…I do like your area but love the coast…love this blog

    1. Thank you, Annie. Oh, I knew you'd love the train! I just wish it was still in operation, but the tracks are gone and replaced with a nice walking trail through town. I'm glad at least they did something nice for the community if they had to remove the trains/tracks. Yes, chronic health issues are no fun, but we are thankful that it isn't anything terribly serious, just aggravating! And we are both starting to feel much better already, praise God.

    1. Thank you, Diane. I love the old clothing too. Such a pretty and genteel time, but I can imagine their clothes were very HOT, especially if they lived in the south! And the undergarments they had to wear...whew! We don't know how blessed we are to be able to wear what we do today. My grandmother (above) never did wear anything but dresses and even wore a kind of corset for many years, she said because it helped support her back. However, I think because she wore one for so many years her back couldn't easily support itself. And they did move to Florida in the late 50's and never had AC in their house! She used to keep what she called her "crying towel" nearby to wipe off the perspiration! LOL. Thank you for the words of encouragement for the kids' store. We are very optimistic and praying it will do well. Time will tell! I am feeling much better today, thank you. Still kind of taking it easy, however. Too hot to do anything else. Have a blessed day.

  15. Wonderful treasures! I gained a few today when my mom was cleaning out some things in her basement. I was kind of made to take them, but I did put my foot down and only took the things I really liked. Maybe tomorrow I will get some photos posted.
