Friday Foto Friends -Memories and Word Pictures

Good Morning and Happy Friday!  I really don't have any real photos for today...used them all up in the last couple of posts, so I guess I'll have to just make up something! LOL.  Actually, my mind started going this morning on Facebook when first of all I saw this video:

Video of Bear and the mirror.  This link will take you to a video that was on Facebook of a bear who sees himself in the mirror and thinks it's another bear.  I hope you can open it, because it really is funny. The person who posted it said that's how he feels every morning when he looks in the mirror. It's a good one.

The other video I watched was this one:

It's well worth the viewing, especially the song by all of those "stars" from days gone by. If you grew up in the 50's and 60's and even the 70's like I did, you will recognize these people and I bet it will bring a tear or two to your eyes like it did mine.  Take a few minutes to watch and enjoy.  It might even give you "goosebumps".  It also made me wonder how many of our so-called Hollywood Stars today would be willing to sing "God Bless America".  Sadly, I fear not that many of them.  But I want to keep this in a positive note.

But the photo that got me thinking was this one:

Photo used by permission

Just a simple photo of an airplane that my husband's distant cousin Lisa Steiner Schalago posted on her Facebook page.  She also had some lovely pictures of the clouds over her home in New Jersey this morning. Lisa always tries to start the day with a positive and encouraging thought to get us up and going. I appreciate her encouragement to "be kind" to others, which is a wonderful reminder and great way to start our day.  But in this post of the airplane she made the statement, "I wonder where the airplane is coming from".   And I commented the following:

"I always wonder about airplanes going over us, where they are going to or coming from, and who's on there, and are they looking down at us as we look up at them...and just think, they are the same size as we are but they look so tiny way up there in the sky, and we are the same size as they are, but I am sure we look tiny to them. Sometimes I wave at them, and I wonder if they are waving back! Added note: I also say a prayer for those people up there in that plane, that they reach their destination safely."

Some other people made some similar and thoughtful comments as well.  Got me to thinking...what do you think when you see an airplane going overhead?  Do you ever wonder about the people on there?  I know when I am up in a plane and looking down on the earth I often think about the people in those tiny little houses and buildings and cars and I wonder if they are noticing us flying way up there in the skies...and do they ever wave at us or pause to even think about who might be on that plane? It's mind boggling to me to think that there are sometimes 100-200 or more souls up in that airplane overhead, all with plans for their day...some all excited about going on vacation, others on business trips, or perhaps others traveling to see a loved one who is ill or may be dying.  This may be the last time they will see that person, and it is weighing heavily on their minds as they travel.  I know, I've been there before. I shared about one such trip here not long ago.  I'd love to hear your thoughts about what you think when you see an airplane overhead or when you are riding in one.  We truly never know just what other people on that plane may be thinking about, do we?  Just like people we meet in the grocery store or the mall or other public places.  I like Lisa's admonition to always "Be Kind".

The last "word picture" in my mind today occurred as we were taking a ride to our walking place this morning, and we passed the high school and middle school buildings, which are now closed for the summer.  My first thought was, "Oh, those halls are quiet now, and the classrooms are empty.  I bet the janitors are busy cleaning the floors and the building is starting to smell all clean like disinfectant and  floor wax. " I remember how strange it felt as a child when we would go to visit the school building in the summer for any reason...to get our new schedules or go to the office for some matter, and it always seemed so weird that no one else was there. It smelled and looked so different.  Do you remember how fresh and clean the school building was when you started back to school in the fall? It took a lot of work to get it that way and to try and keep it that way once school started back. Our school janitors have a difficult job that is often not appreciated as much as it should be.

This is a picture of my old High School, the way it looks now.  Really not much different than it was over 50 years ago, when I last attended there.

Well, I guess I need to go so I can get this posted. Just thought you'd like to know what I was thinking about today. Maybe it will stir up some happy memories or some "deep thoughts" for you as well!
Whatever you do today, like our cousin Lisa says,
"Be Kind."

Amen.

  1. Our house is in the flight path for planes approaching the airport from a southern route, but the planes are still quite high in the sky when they pass. When I swim laps I finish by floating on my back, looking at the sky and occasionally a plane flies overhead. I always wonder about the people on the plane, where they are coming from and what their final destination is. (Should I mention I also am thankful that they are so far from me that at best I would just appear as a small dot in the pool)

    1. Ha ha to your last statement. LOL! That's a good one! We don't get many planes overhead where we are now, so I don't get this opportunity often anymore, but it is a good thing to remember when we do see them.

  2. Good question about the airplane. I really don't often think about anything, except that Jake would love to see it.I have only been on a plane a few times, on a flight to and from Nashville, some years ago. I was busy trying to absorb all the sights and sounds around me.

  3. I hear planes overhead a lot. I pray for their safety as they pass. I have no definite thoughts about them.. just kind of an awareness of all onboard.

    1. I think the fact that you are aware of them and that you pray for their safety is a wonderful thing. We just never know do we? After 9-11, I've thought about those dear ones and how they were just thinking of flying to wherever, never guessing how their lives were about to end. So I think praying for them as they pass over us is always a good thing.

  4. Happy Friday, Pam! Yes, I laughed myself silly at the bear video ... poor guy. And what memories the second evoked. I know it's not wise to spend too much time in the past, but gosh, it's a comforting place to visit.
Unless a loved one is aboard a plane, I'm afraid saying a prayer for its occupants never occured to me. I'm glad you brought this up so I might rectify that; after all, being a white-knuckle flyer myself, I'd appreciate all the prayers I could get! Oh, and I learned something recently from another blogger -- how one can point their cell phone at a plane in the sky and get all sorts of information. I Googled that a little bit ago and was stunned to realize how long this technology's been around; and how many people already knew it except me. (Ha!) Here's a link to one such article: https://thepointsguy.com/news/how-to-use-flight-tracker-apps/

    I hope you're enjoying a great day!

    1. Oh, I'm glad you opened the bear video and enjoyed it. Wasn't that a hoot? And I enjoyed seeing all those old familiar faces on that video so much. It was a sad revelation, however, to realize that the majority of them are already gone on to glory. Perhaps we'll get to meet some of them someday. Now, about pointing your cell phone at a plane, etc., I never heard of that and am not sure how I feel about it. Gave me a weird "big brother is watching you" vibe. But hopefully it is only used for good purposes. Wow. So much we just don't know about the new technology. I find myself wanting to stay back in the good old days...LOL.

  5. A great question to ask ourselves every morning is, "How can I be kind today?" I don't know that I've thought much about the people riding in the plane overhead, but what a great opportunity that is to say a prayer for each of them? Since we do a lot of car travel, I'll catch myself looking at houses along the way and wondering, "Who lives there? What are their lives like? Are they happy, feeling blessed? Or are they sad and troubled?" Maybe, that's the writer's imagination in me!
I will take some time later today, too, to watch the John Wayne special. Yes, I remember all those folks.
    Blessings, Pamela!

    1. Yes, I love that idea about "be kind today..." something to definitely think about. And yes, we can all use more prayers, and wouldn't it be comforting to know there are people down here on earth praying for us when we are up in the air, and vice versa? I like your thoughts about looking at houses, etc. I've thought that too. We are all human in need of some prayers and love. Thank you for joining in.

  7. I have always wondered if anyone else thought about the people in airplanes the way I do. And you do! Since my husband and I have flown a lot and several times to London and Tokyo recently in the past few years, I find myself thinking of the different countries as we fly over. So many people going about their everyday lives, not realizing the many flying overhead. I often think of that when I look at the actual faces of the people in cars next to me. All of us going about our lives, thinking about how important our tasks and lives are and not even thinking that the person next to us is just as engrossed in their own lives. It certainly gives one a strange feeling. I marvel at the mind of God as He is capable of knowing each one of us and our thoughts and dreams. I take much comfort in that. I try to be kind to all I meet, especially in these crazy days that we're living in.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  8. Empty schools do have a strange sense of nobody there.
Airplanes, I admit to waving sometimes, saying a prayer, and, wondering when I will fly again. :)

  9. When the jet planes fly over us here in Lakeland, we know they are from Amazon. Our airport is a hub for Amazon and theirs are the only big planes that fly in and out of our airport. I occasionally wonder if one of my purchases is on the plane! LOL That bear video is very funny and I know how he feels!! LOL Thanks for the giggle, Pam. Happy weekend!! xo

  10. I have looked down on the small towns we fly over and love watching the cars - so much open spaces when you are flying over the mid west. I live 250 miles from the nearest international airport. We have 1 small airport. I do see, the little planes - sometimes they don't sound too good, and I'm hoping they don't crash on us.

I see on occasion the big planes - flying to Portland or Seattle. I wish I could go - I love the pacific northwest but the last 2 years, they have been crazy and dangerous places to visit - so we'll pass until things settle down. My husband's family are all up in Seattle. A very beautiful city, that has been taken over.

After 9-11 I do at times, think of the power behind those big commercial airliners as they fly over.

Thanks for the thought provoking post.

  11. Airplanes pass overhead toward the airport here; they look so small up there when I glimpse one. We have farm fields here also and it's fun to see the crop dusters, I've only been in a small airplane a few times. My first memory was with my childhood pastor after he took flying lessons. It was so pretty over the lake. My brother-in-law used to fly as a hobby but that was years ago and now, he is married with children and grandchildren and hasn't done it anymore. Expensive hobby . I went on a helicopter rise over Orange beach. It was a short ride but a beautiful memory

  12. We see all kinds of airplanes overhead and I usually feel thankful I'm not on them! lol I love being at home and going on day trips in my Jeep. I should look for recent pics of my old schools. I went to the same high school that my mother went to! Enjoy your weekend!

  13. We live not far from a hospital. We here the heliocopters taking patients there to be treated. It always makes me have mixed emotions about them. I am thankful that we have this service for those who need it. However, I often wonder if the injured passengers will be able to recover. Peace and blessings.

  14. Gary and I enjoyed the music video with John Wayne and so many other stars.

  15. Happy sunday my friend! I love this post and I LOVED THE VIDEO! Seen so many of the old favorites there, and yes, so many of them are sadly already gone. The "stars" of today are not really "stars" in my opinion. They are nothing like the good 'ole days and the music is even WORSE.....not much true talent to be found. They use some kind of synthesizer music, techno something.....alot dont even play real instruments anymore! Gosh in my day, they really DID PLAY guitars, pianos, (remember Elton John?) DRUMS, (classic rock and roll from the Seventies had drums! LOL) even organs. I recall the heavy organ sound of the 1960s and 1970s. I read articles where alot of their "singing" isn't even real, it's some voice-tune or auto-tune or something, where you can be even very "un-talented" and it makes you sound good! ha ha LOL Oh, I'm sure there is alot of real talent still around....it's just not as popular, or as much, I think maybe? We listen to our Christian music station here, and I love the stations that play the old pop music and Motown from the fifties, sixties, and seventies. IT'S POURING THE RAIN HERE, did y'all get rain today?

    1. Hi Debbi. Yes, we got a LOT of rain this afternoon, praise God! It was quite windy and rainy for a while, but we were so glad to see the rain we didn't mind the wind! Hope you had a good weekend. Ours was good. Nothing extra special, but just good.

  16. Pam, Thanks for the video link to the many long gone celebrities singing God Bless America. That show must have been something to see when originally broadcast and most likely anything similar would not be done now. We see planes quite often from out mill apt window, mostly smaller ones, as there is a local airfield nearby. And, I wonder many similar thoughts.

  17. My husband and I love evenings on our front proch - just front proch rocking:) We do not leave far from the airport and the evening flight paths often go right past us. We will often ask each other, "so where are they headed?" and try to envision the most exotic or inviting or exciting place we can (at the time, of course)! Then we wander, "would you want to go along?" Usually, we are quite happy right we are!!:)
