O Christmas Tree Saga and "Winter Nature Scenes"

Well, we finally got our Christmas tree put up after a few complications...There's a story here...it's a bit long so pull up a chair and get a cup of coffee or tea and settle in for the saga...

I didn't take pictures of what happened before we got to this moment, where Hubby is hugging our "old tree"...

And I am saying "well, we live and learn..."

You see, this tree that you see above we have had for about 20 years. It is one of those artificial trees that you have to insert every single branch on the tree individually, and of course you also have to put the lights on manually.  Every year in the recent past I have been saying that after Christmas we need to take advantage of a sale on Christmas trees and replace this one (that also is shedding badly if you look at the floor above) and get one of those lovely pre-lit trees that also just come in three sections and you don't have to individually insert each and every branch, which is very time consuming and difficult to do for us old folks, namely me, because I am the one who normally does all of the above...

Well, just recently at our local flea market one of the vendors had a beautiful Christmas tree standing there for sale. It was the type that came in three sections, very pretty and full, and it was one of the "pre-lit" types, although they did not have it lit at the flea market because it is an outdoor market with no electricity available.  But the lady vendor said she "thought the lights worked just fine."  They only wanted $25.00 for the tree, and there was another man standing there ready to buy it if we didn't, and so,  after a minute or two of deliberation, we decided to take a chance on it. After all, even if the lights didn't work, we could always put lights on it since we have plenty. I mainly wanted it for the fact that it would be easy to put together and save myself some energy and time.

And so, finally the day came for us to bring the tree into the house and set it up. First we laid it out on the front porch and sprayed it with some bug spray, because it had been stored in an old box that looked questionable, and in Florida you just never know what might have taken up residence in the tree.  And then we left it on the porch for a while to air out before bringing it inside.

We got everything ready to put the tree together inside, and it was indeed very easy to do. I was thrilled. Except for figuring out how to connect the lights from section to section...that was a little tricky, but I finally figured that out, and then came the moment of truth...would the lights work? Well...yes and no.  I'd say about 1/4 of the lights worked and that was it. But still, I was undaunted. I would make it work.
Hubby had to go run an errand,  and I thought I would start putting some lights on the tree. However, I am still having issues with my right arm since my surgery, and I realized that I could not reach up and stretch around the tree as normal, and so I decided to wait for help. Meanwhile I was getting a headache. The tree had a peculiar odor...not the bug spray because it was unscented, but a perfumy strong odor that just seemed to be getting stronger and stronger the longer I was in the room with the tree. I opened up the back door behind the tree to bring in some fresh air. I went out on the porch and breathed the air, but when I came back inside my headache was getting worse and I was feeling nauseous. (I am very "scents-itive" to scents)  I looked at the tree and said, "you are making me sick! I can't have you in this house!" If I could have gotten it out of the house by myself I would have, but I didn't have the strength to take it back apart and do that. So I stayed on the back porch until hubby got back home and then together we got that tree out of the house asap.
Again, I don't know if the bug spray exacerbated an already toxic issue, or if it was something else, but the tree had to go.  When our son came home we asked him to put it back in the box and put it out on the curb for the trash men to pick up. And so he did, but it was already after dark.
By morning, before daylight, that box and tree were gone!  I guess someone passing by decided to see just what we had put on our curb and they decided they wanted it badly enough to take it. Which is fine with me, but I do hope that whatever that odor was wasn't really toxic enough to make someone else sick. And mainly, I just don't want them to bring it back to our house! LOL.

And so, we got our old tree out of the shed and hubby actually helped me put it all together, one branch at a time.  Our son Scott thankfully put all the lights on for us, and then I was able to finally put on the decorations a little at a time.
And that's the saga of the Christmas Tree.
It looks so pretty, I think it will just have to last us another 20 years...
Oh, and guess what?  The kids are coming over tomorrow night to set up the train and village under the tree like we did last year for the first time in over 30 years! A new tradition has been started, and this little girl is so happy!

Okay, so now, what else is new?

Well, we were in Walmart the other day and I saw these plates, and I 'believe' they were calling my name...I only bought two. I believe that will do, but don't you agree that I needed these plates? I am glad you agree...

This morning we woke up to a very foggy morning...

This is how it looked out on Still Waters Pond. My son said it looked very "wintry" to him...one could just imagine that was all snow and ice out there...a blizzard blowing in from the north...

I noticed these yellow hearts on the tree by the pond...grapevine leaves changing color for fall/winter, and red maple leaves make a nice contrast against the green tree and foggy background...

The fog also showed me where I need to sweep down some cobwebs on the back porch:

Oh, and also I checked something else we've been concerned about. Lately we've had a lot of wasps swarming on the back porch in the afternoon sun. They appeared to be flying in behind that thermometer attached over there on that post. I looked behind it since it was so cool and foggy this morning, and sure enough, there was quite a large nest of wasps sitting there sleeping in on this cool morning.  So I sent out our Ninja Warrior son to take care the enemy wasps whilst they slept:

Armed with two cans of long distance wasp spray, he knocked them out of that nest in no time at all:

And those mean old wasps started dropping like "flies".

The thermometer may never be the same...

And there is one lone witness to the massacre sitting out there in the tree on this foggy wintry day:

A little later, when the fog lifted and the sun broke through, we decided to take a walk. I ventured onto a path less traveled through the woods and made another new discovery:

This strange looking plant is known as a Ghost plant, or Indian Pipes

Have you ever seen such a plant before? I never have in my life, and this was the only one anywhere around that I could see.  Another of God's mysteries and interesting parts of His creation.

Then, not far from this I saw this empty tortoise shell:

I am thinking it is from a Gopher Tortoise, because we have many of their holes and tunnels all around in these woods.

Now for more "winter nature scenes" from here in Florida...

My hubby discovered these two beautiful white/gray feathery plumes in our yard. I believe they came from a Sand Hill Crane, but they are so light and feathery and pretty, I just had to keep them.

Not sure what to do with them, but I decided to temporarily at least add them to the Tea cup tree as "Angel Wings"...

Okay, now for the most interesting Christmas gift I think I've ever received...
This came in the mail today, and it had no name attached as to who it was from, but I had been given a heads up earlier in the week from one of my dear old "fun" friends to expect a gift in the mail coming from Montana. Now, she was not in Montana, but the gift was being sent from Montana. She then sent me pictures of several things from Montana, like buffalo and elk. I asked if she was sending me some "Buffalo Chips", because in the past I have received Moose Poop from Maine (actually it was candy), and many Pink Flamingoes from Florida and other unusual gift items throughout the years. She is the kind of friend that you just never know what to expect.
So when this arrived today in the mail, I wasn't too surprised, but yet, it was certainly not something I'd ever expected to receive, that's for certain! LOL

Yes, this is a "Bird Nesting Globe", filled with 100% natural Alpaca fleece.

Lots of varieties of Alpaca wool went into this very interesting and unusual gift.

And so, of course I set about right away to find a place to hang it.

However, the little branch I tried to hang it on broke, so I had to come up with another idea, at least for now.

My son is like my hubby...he loves to take funny pictures of me.

Finally we decided to hang it on this bird feeder hook until we can come up with a better plan for hanging it in a tree.

So now the birds have their very own Alpaca nesting globe,  so they should be all set for winter!

Tell, me what is the most unusual Christmas gift you've ever received?
Can you top this one?

Yesterday I told my hubby I was tired of waiting for my arm to get better and for my energy to return following my surgery 5 weeks ago. I no sooner said that than we sat down to read our morning devotions, and this was the verse that came up in the devotions:

"Wait on the Lord;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord!"
Psalm 27:14

So there you go. That's what Advent is all about...waiting for the coming of the Lord into our homes, hearts, lives, world.  The Good News is, He's already here...Emmanuel means, "God with us".  Jesus is already here...so let us just be patient and wait on Him to strengthen our hearts, our bodies, and our lives...He will not fail us.

Merry Christmas everyone!
Have a blessed and wonderful Advent season...preparing for the Birthday of Jesus!

  1. Cool turtle shell. I would have guessed it was a Box Turtle but what'a I know. *giggle* I'm not a herpetologist. It is kinda hard to tell when it's only a shell. I found a WHOPPING big Rat Snake shed the other day. That was neat. I like our Rat Snakes (they eat rodents).
I got rid of our old artificial when the pre-lit's came out. It was shedding too. Now at the end of Christmas I put a big plastic bag over each tree, label the bag, then store them As Is. I'm so lazy. *lol*
    I enjoyed the post.
    Blessings. xx

    1. I was not sure either about the type of turtle, but because this was far from water, and we do have a LOT of gopher holes on the property there where we walk, I just assumed it was that. Yes, I like rat snakes too, as long as they don't slither past me and scare me. But yes, we appreciate the work they do, unless they eat baby birds... Re: your pre-lit tree. Have you had any problem with the lights going out? What do you do if they do? That's my only concern with the pre-lits. Thanks for visiting. I always love for you to spend some time here with me! :)

  2. That nesting globe is SO cool! Nope, I wouldn't begin to try and think of something to top that story ... but I'm mighty impressed by your secret friend's ingenuity.
That's a bit unsettling about the tree's odor. So glad your super sensitivity kicked in when it did, prompting y'all to get whatever it is OUT of your home. Yep, those plates? I do BELIEVE you were meant to have them. They add just the perfect touch.
PS - We had fog all about this morning, too. I love it!

    1. Thank you, Myra! Ha Ha, I bet you could come up with a few fun stories if you tried! My friend does have a lot of ingenuity and creativity. She has given me some very lovely special gifts throughout the years as well. We've been friends for a long time and it's been a lot of fun. Yes, the tree's odor was very unsettling...like a strong air freshener or something, that I cannot abide...and it could have been the combination of that with the bug spray chemicals...anyway, it's gone, and I'm fine now I BELIEVE God was definitely watching over me. Hey, it's foggy again this morning too! Have a blessed day.

    1. I am not sure. It smelled a lot like some kind of strong air freshener or something like that, which I cannot tolerate, and it may have also been the effects of the bug spray combined with that. Either way, it was too much for me and I definitely glad we hadn't decorated it yet. God is good. He gave me the wisdom to realize it needed to GO!!!

  5. Oh my! What a saga about putting up the Christmas Tree. You know I never knew there was such a thing as an artificial tree which required branch installation to be done one by one. When I bought my first artificial tree over 20 years ago it came in 2 parts (for the branches) as it wasn't a very tall tree. I gave it away 2 years ago in favour of an even smaller pre-lit tree. It looks so pretty with the lights on and since I don't much enjoy decorating trees, I just put on a few baubles and that's it. What I like is the cosy glow of lights and I haven't had any problem with lights yet as this is only the 2nd or 3rd year with the pre-lit tree. Like most pre-lit trees, they come with a few replacement bulbs so that helps for awhile. It's a good thing there was a Ninja in the neighbourhood to get rid of the wasps. I had a huge wasp nest on one of my trees and for about 2 years I couldn't figure out why wasps would always come around whenever we tried to have a meal outside. Finally we spotted the big nest and someone from pest control came out and took care of it pronto. I like the baby bird nest. I'm sure the birds will like it too. I don't think I can top receiving such a gift. Now that you have your tree up you can enjoy the rest of December. The lights, the Believe plates, the remembrance of Jesus, and family and friends will give you a cosy glow.

    1. Thank you, Penny. Now that the decorating is done, I now can concentrate on gifts...that is my next big adventure. Yes, I do put things off to the last minute it seems, especially shopping...I do not like to shop and I am not crafty enough to make things, so it becomes a real conundrum for me of my own making. But somehow I always manage to come up with something for everyone when the day comes, thanks to Jesus' help. This year, since I recently had surgery, I am just not quite up to par yet and don't have the energy to do much shopping, and I'm not trusting online shopping to make it on time, so it may be gift card gift for everyone this year. We shall see. God is good and He will help me. Yes, Jesus is the reason for the season, and I prefer to focus on Him. That's is what keeps me going. God bless you today my friend.

    2. I think gift cards are a great idea. I'm thinking of getting one or two this year for some male family members since the things I would buy or make are not things they would probably like. All the best dear friend with the shopping. I'm sure you will pick just the right things.

  6. WoW, that was some episode with that tree!! I just wonder what that smell was...I just can't imagine. Since it was making you sick I'm glad it's gone. You always look so happy, I bet you lift spirits wherever you go. And you know I loved all the nature scenes, God's art is beautiful. :)

    1. Oh thank you Mary. I am not sure what the smell was, but it was a very strong perfumy smell kind of like a strong air freshener, which I cannot tolerate at all. I am wondering also if the bug spray was a part of the problem once indoors, but whatever it was, it was unbearable for me and it had to go! Thank you for the sweet compliment about me looking happy. I do have my moments when I can probably scare a bear away (I actually have done that!), but generally I am a happy person and am so thankful to be so, all because of Jesus! And yes, God's ART is the very best of all!!!! Thank you, and so glad to see you writing in your blog again. I miss you when you aren't here in Blogland with us!

  7. The nesting globe that your friend sent you is such a great idea. Your tree looks pretty. We haven't put up a big tree in several years. Our house is so small and the tree takes up so much room. In the past I wanted to buy a 3 part pre-lit Christmas tree, but it hasn't happened yet. I've had several health problems in recent years and when I recall how much work it was for me to get the lights on and then all of the ornaments we had collected through the years, and that was back when I had a lot of get up and go, I wonder if I could even accomplish all of that now.

Your home, Christmas decoration, plate collection all look so pretty.

    1. Thank you, Susie. I think you may be new to my blog? If so, Welcome! I must come visit you as well. Yes, the tree is a lot of work to do, especially with the kind we have, but when it is all said and done I am always so glad we did it. But I am going to get more serious about looking for the right tree at an after Christmas sale for next year. Yes, I understand about the health issues as I have also had them in the past few years, which is why I am becoming more persistent in wanting to fix this problem. As long as I have help here I can manage, but my hubby isn't in much better shape than I am, and I don't know how long our adult son will stay around to be here when I need him. He's a wonderful help when he is here, but I can't expect him to stay forever. Anyway, Christmas is all about celebrating the birth of Jesus our Savior, and if we let these other issues get in the way of that it takes away the real meaning of the season. So I have to keep things in perspective. Thank you for visiting, and I do hope you will come back again soon!

  8. I've never even heard of a nesting globe, let alone seen one until now, Pam. How cool is that? Sorry to hear that the new tree didn't work out, and can't fathom what that strange smell if gave could be. I'm very sensitive to scents, too, and I'm sure I would have joined you in the headache department. I know I sound like Scrooge, but we've opted not to put our tree up this year, mainly because it's so much work and we have no grands here over the holidays to enjoy it. Maybe next year . . .
    Blessings and continue to heal!

    1. I think the strange scent was a combination of some kind of air freshener and maybe the bug spray together didn't get along...they certainly didn't get along with me whatever it was. I understand your feelings about not putting up a tree this year. We each have to decide what we enjoy and don't enjoy about the Christmas season and decorations. Will you get to see your Grands again for Christmas at all? I know you had a good visit with them for Thanksgiving, and I am sure that was enough to fill you up for a while... But anyway, I am sure you and your hubby and doesn't your son live there too? , anyway, I am sure you will have a blessed and wonderful Christmas with or without a tree. For me, I'm a real sentimentalist when it comes to a Christmas tree. Even though it's a lot of work, somehow I just can't bring myself to do without it. Not yet, anyway. Maybe when I get old. LOL. Thank you for the blessings and good wishes. You are a dear friend and I appreciate you so much.

  9. Your Christmas tree is beautiful. I had not heard of a tree that individual branches needed to be inserted. We have a 4 foot Christmas tree that has two sections, I believe. I think we will be putting up our tree sometime today.

    1. Well, our tree is so old that that is the way they made them back then I guess. It's a very pretty tree and has held up well in spite of its years, although it is shedding a bit more each year I think. But I am ready to start looking for a new one perhaps after the season is over if they have any good sales. That's how we got this one in the first place. Oh, I hope you are having fun putting up your tree today!! Be sure to post some pictures when you do! Have a blessed Christmas /Advent season.

  10. What a delightful post to read. Where do I start? First, I have never seen an Indian plant. I love finding interesting things such as this. I also am with Scott on wearing a hoodie for those little monsters. They can be vicious. After your story I would hold onto the 20 year old tree. It still looks good to me. I bought one of hose prelim ones one year after Christmas and it gave me two good years. Then the lights went out on the morning of Christmas Eve. Nothing I did made those lights ever work. I tried to take them off to use without the lights it came with. That was a bear and impossible so I threw it away. I swore off prelim trees and would rather add my own but as we age they do get harder to do. Thank goodness for children who help.

    1. Thank you for this info on the prelit trees. I have feared that they would do that, and so I would prefer not to have the prelit kind, but I do want the kind that is in just three sections if I can find one without the lights. This tree is still nice but it is shedding a lot and putting every single branch on there is a job. Thankfully hubby helped me this year and that made it go a lot better. I hope he will continue to do so now that he sees how much help I need. Before this year I've always been able to manage it, but getting older does have its drawbacks. Yes, the kids are good to help when they are available! I know I can't always depend on them to be available, however. They have their own things to do...such is life!! And we are blessed to have such problems. Right?

      Delete
  11. I remember very well having to do that with each branch and put the lights on too! I'm so happy for prelit trees that have about 3 sections to put together. So sorry that it didn't work out for you. Thankfully you also had the help from your son. Maybe look for a sale after Christmas. Hope you have fun with the family today.

I can't get down on the floor like I used to, (well, it's the getting back UP that's the problem...) so I hope they will be able to do the hard part of setting it up, then all I have to do is play with it. LOL. Yes, I am definitely in my 2nd childhood. LOL. Have a wonderful day!

What a crazy tree story you told us and wouldn't it be fun to know what happens to that stinky tree now? 1. Funny, we went to the flea market yesterday and wondered if it would show up there again, but there was no sign of it. LOL. I hope someone is able to use it because it is a very pretty tree even with its issues. Maybe if it was aired out a while longer it might help. I do hope the birds will find the nesting globe and use it. I will be watching and if I can catch any snatching wool from it I will try to get a picture and share it. I hope you have a fun and blessed week too.

  13. That old tree looks lovely, Pam, and I am rather glad that it was not tossed out and able to help you celebrate another holiday season. Perhaps, you will buy a pre-lit tree after the holidays (if any are left) or next season. That experience with the other tree was quite the disaster and I thought you might have wished the other interested person bought it first! The nesting globe was quite interesting and something new to me. It's wonderful that your family will be helping to set up the holiday village and trains. This year, we are putting up a tree, but not the village because it's one or the other due to space restrictions and we will be on the road visiting family for a week or more before Christmas.

    1. Thank you, "Beatrice". Yes, I am glad we didn't toss out the old tree either. It is working just fine this year, and I don't know if I can convince hubby to replace it. He seems quite attached to it now. We did have a great time tonight setting up the train and village. I will do a little more tweaking before sharing, but we had such fun. I am glad you still put up a tree even though you will be away a lot. The tree just brings so much joy with the lights, etc....a real bright spot in the long dark nights of December! And yes, the nesting globe is a new idea to me too. Not sure if the birds will figure it out or not, but I am watching to see what happens. Have a blessed week ahead.

  14. I don't think I can top that unique bird nest wool globe you received! How nice! The birds gather my dog's hair sometimes, including trying to sneak up on her tail! Bad idea, as she is very fast and likes to snap at them. I am sorry about the stinky tree. It sounds like a very bad tree from top to bottom and I'm glad it's gone! I agree with you, you HAD to get those plates, they were really pretty and something you might not see again!

    1. Thank you so much Holly! So good to hear from you. I hope you are doing okay. I've been thinking about you and missing you and praying for you. I am glad you like the bird nest wool globe. I am watching it daily to see if there is any action, but I'm not sure the birds have seen it yet. I may need to move it closer to the trees, but then I won't be able to see it as well. I thought I'd let them get used to it first and maybe then they will get curious enough to check it out. Yes, I was sorry about the stinky tree too, but am glad it is gone. It might have been a loss of $25.00, but it was worth the loss to be rid of it. And I am glad you agree and BELIEVE that I needed those plates. They were only $2.98 ea., so that isn't too much to brighten a day is it? Thank you for visiting. Now I must go see if you have written something new so I can see what you've been doing. Take care my friend, and Happy Advent/Merry Christmas!

  16. Pam: When we moved into our house in 1975, Hubby decided we needed to get an artificial tree. We picked a corner of our living room for it. We bought on that the sides were sections. They attached to a circular piece of wood that sat on the center pole. The top of the tree was one section. We could have used the top as a smaller tree, if we chose to. We passed it on to a single mother and her children after they had lost everything in a house fire. We also gave them most of the decorations we used on that tree. Peace and blessings to you and yours.

    1. That was really sweet to pass your tree on to a single mother, etc. I know she appreciated that very kind gesture. Do you have another tree now? Hard to believe ow long ago 1975 was! Our first two babies were little and our third one came along in 1977. Now he is 44 going on 45. my baby. Wow. time flies. I know that young mother and her family appreciated that gift so much. I hope whoever got this "stinky tree" will be able to air it out and enjoy it for a long time. It really was a pretty tree...just not for me. Have a blessed and wonderful Christmas.

  17. Now that is a unique gift Pam...the Alpaca nesting globe. WOW! I have never seen one of those. I love the pictures of you and adore your sweet smile. Girl....I would have gotten rid that tree too as I too am sensitive with smells and etc. With Asthma I have to be really careful too! Girl, I was outside once while Marty was spraying for bugs, actually I was on the other side of our house on my front porch and he was in the back yard...but anyways, the wind caught that mess just right and it darn near sent me into an attack! Anyway, back to the tree.....You might have been out $25 but at least you had your old faithful tree to fall back on and it's lovely. I LOVE that beautiful Believe Plate! You know that is right up my ally. I bought a new tree this year for the living girl and choose not to buy pre-lit. Lordy, I've never had good luck with those type trees and maybe you can catch a tree on sale after Christmas this year. I too love my skinny tree I use in the kitchen and I would have been satisfied with using it again in the living room but Marty wanted a fat tree. Hope it last a long, long time. Will pray for your complete healing Pam. Bless your heart. Nothing like Pain!!! I have had a time lately with my neck pain and hip pain than usual. Trusting the Lord each day is a must for us all. Hugs and blessings to you dear lady. Cindy

My hubby is attached to it and probably won't let me get a new one after what we went through this year...and I don't want a pre-lit one if they don't last that long. We do live and learn. Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers. and I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with your neck and hip. I hope you can get some good relief. My old Daddy used to say, "Pammy, don't get old! And I'd say, "well Daddy, what' my alternative?" and he'd smile and say, "Oh, I see what you mean." LOL. He was such a sweetheart. Lived to be almost 93 and was a very dear man. I miss him all the time. Have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy your beautiful family!

  18. Oh, I am so glad you finally got your tree up - and didn't lose every ounce of Christmas spirit in the process!! There never seems to be a shortage of Christmas tree sagas! Everyone seems to have at least one! And I do love those Believe plates! I even believe a trip to Walmart might be in my future - I need to look for those:) Yes, I believe I do!
