Processing Christmas-Day Two

If you read my last POST HERE, you will know that our Christmas celebration came in two parts. I thought I'd take a little break between posts to give you (& me!) a chance to get caught up with everyone else. We are all sharing our Christmas stories and it's so wonderful to see and hear how you all celebrated The Birth of Christ in your homes.  We each have our own special traditions and foods and decorations and things that we like to do at Christmas time...it's fun to hear all about it.  And even for those who don't have a lot of family nearby, it is good to do something to commemorate the day and honor Christ's birthday in whatever way is meaningful to you.  I've really enjoyed reading your posts. We are like one big family here!

So speaking of family...on our "Day Two" of Christmas, my sister and her hubby and daughter and her hubby traveled a couple of hours to spend the afternoon with us. This was the only picture I got of our family together, as the rest of the time we were too busy either eating or opening gifts, or just enjoying visiting and I totally forgot about taking pictures! (Something must be wrong with me! LOL)

I love this picture because our son Scott, who you see at the very top of steps in a teal colored shirt on the left side, actually set up my phone camera with a timer on the bumper of a truck in the driveway, and ran and leaped up to the top of the steps between all of us and managed to pose for the picture before it snapped! Amazing! And it still turned out this good! These young people with such quick minds and agility just blow me away! LOL.

Anyway, our original plan had been to go out to eat for lunch at a local BBQ place since my hubby and I would be going to church (he teaches the Adult Sunday School class and I sing in the choir, so we didn't feel like we could skip it just because company was coming), and I knew I wouldn't have time to prepare any kind of meal for everyone who would be arriving right at noon.  However, the day before, after our own family's Christmas dinner was over we determined that we had a LOT of leftovers, and I called my sister and asked her what they had for leftovers, and we decided we both had enough that we could put them together and have a great pot-luck dinner instead of having to go out to eat!! Great idea! And it worked out perfectly. We still had leftovers! LOL.
One fun thing we did was make a bowl of Christmas punch, with lime sherbet, cranberry juice, ginger ale and orange juice. (or you could use pineapple juice, but I didn't have any). We used this beautiful green punch bowl set that my mother in law gave me years ago. It has been used for many Christmas parties at church and our home over the years.  I put my niece to work making the punch right away and she laughed and said now she felt like "an old church lady" making the "church lady punch".  I guess that's what we'll call it from now on! LOL. (Sorry, forgot to take a picture of the finished product).

Lunch being done, our next event was our annual "White Elephant Gift" exchange...where each person brings a wrapped gift  that is something you'd like to get rid of...or it could be something nice, but the idea is to not have to go out and buy gifts for everyone.  We play this game, which is like what some of you call a "Chinese Auction" or "Dirty Santa", where people can take your gift if they want it and you have to get another one, etc., etc., but everyone still ends up with a gift, whether you like it or not! LOL.
There were some very "interesting" gifts passed around.
Like this "Mark the Moose". LOL

Or this "Ginger and Chili Chutney" and other interesting delicacies...
Which really aren't bad, but their expiration date is next month, so we'd  better eat them up fast! LOL.
Anybody want some marmalade or chutney or relish? You have to come here and get it!

But we did also exchange some very special gifts between us...
One thing that is a tradition from my family is that my father used to buy each of the ladies one of these Amaryllis plant kits each Christmas, so we could plant it and watch it grow:
So, I have kind of taken over that tradition and make sure to find these every year for each of the women who will be present at our Christmas gatherings.  Sometimes they aren't as easy to find, or they may be already starting to grow in the box, like that one above was doing...I just planted it in the pot yesterday, and look at it already!!  But it will grow and have beautiful flowers, and then in the spring you can plant it outdoors and it might bloom again later. They do come back each year as well. (here in Florida)

I also received some very special and meaningful gifts from my sister and my niece as well. They just really touched my heart.
The "Devotions from the Front Porch" (by Stacy Edwards) book was from my sister, and the "O Holy Night" book was from my niece. Just a couple of examples of what is inside these books will show you how special they are:
"A Rocking Chair" on the front porch invites you to
"Come unto Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."  Matthew 11:28

And, can you imagine why I was drawn to read this one?  "The Lily Tree", a special tree planted in loving memory of an infant named Lily who never got to be held in her mother's arms...
"His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."
Lamentations 3:22-23

The other book, "O Holy Night",  (illustrated by Sarah Cray) has beautiful water color paintings accompanying the lyrics to several different beloved Christmas carols, including "O Holy Night",

And "Joy to the World"

Amazing to me how my sister and my niece both knew what I would love and enjoy. I was very humbled by these sweet gifts.

But I've been talking too much here and not getting to the very best gift of all, that literally brought me to tears!

Can you read what is engraved on the handle of this little baby spoon?

Yes, it says "Pamela Anne".  My sister gave this to me...and when I saw it I just couldn't believe it. This was my baby spoon!  Somehow she ended up with it among other silverware from our mother's things, and she said it was so tarnished she didn't realize what it was until she polished it. I'm not sure why it affected me so much, but I couldn't help but shed some tears as I held this tiny little silver spoon in my hand and thought about how my mother had actually fed me with this spoon when I was a baby...and the fact that it had my name engraved on it...well, that just blew me away. Then someone broke the spell and said, "Gee Mom, now you can say you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth!" LOL. Yeah, right!  I don't know who gave this spoon to my mother when I was born, maybe my grandparents.  I wish I knew. But no matter who...it just made me think about the baby Jesus, and how there were no silver baby spoons for Him when He was born in a manger, and yet He was the King of kings! He left the Ivory Palaces of Heaven to come to earth, to be born among the cattle and sheep and in a lowly feed trough...the Bread of Heaven, given for all mankind. And He did it for me, and for you! He knows my name!  It is written down in His Lamb's book of life...and He knows your name too...
How special is that???

Well, there were other special gifts in addition to this, but I think I will stop here. Maybe some others will show up in future posts. But I just want us to stop and think here about how much Jesus loves us!
He knows your name. It is written down in His book of those who love Him and those for whom He gave up His life.

"Greater love has no one than this,
than to lay down one’s life for his friends."
John 15:13

Now maybe you see why I am still "processing Christmas" in my mind.
It's been rather "mind-blowing".

It's almost New Year's...and I still haven't come up with my "One Word for 2022".
Have you? I am praying about it. I am sure God will reveal it to me on time.
He always does.

Until next time,
be blessed my friends...Jesus loves you.

  1. There's quite a bit of Indian foods that I like. Chutney is tasty. Very exotic. I've been reading a lo about India. Archeologists have proven that their society or culture goes back about 50,000 years. It's very ancient. I've learned what happened to them under the Raj as well (British occupancy). They do have a long and interesting history.
Such beautiful thoughtful gifts. I really like the "O Holy Night" book. That's one of my favorite Hymns/Christmas Carols.
We DO need to all meet in 2022 after the Conley's get moved down. Maybe some place between us all so we don't have to spend the night? I think that would be super.
    Happy New Year!

    1. You are welcome to come get the Chutney!! And yes, the society of India , etc., is very interesting...there's so much we just don't know about our world civilization. And YES , we will meet when the Conley's come down. We'll figure it out when they get "landed" somewhere. Can't wait to see them, and YOU!!! Blessings in the New Year to you and Steve. It's going to be a good year.

  4. The baby spoon reall touched my heart. What a precious gift to receive and have those memories. I loveit. OH my goodness we make punch too. I love your green punch bowl. I was a Princess HOuse consultant for many years so I have a huge handblown punchbowl we use and it for Hannah;'s 30th birthdya this summer. Our favorite punch is Raspberry sherbert, Vanilla ice cream and Hawaiian Punch (berry flavored) with 7 up or Ginger Ale. You can switch it up to orange sherbert and vanilla ice cream with the Orange flavored Hawaiian Punch. I guess I am a kid at heart. I often have a small glass of Hawaiian Punch with my pure Vitamin C which is in powder form. Your home is lovely and your family too. I am always so grateful to see friends and their loved ones together. Beautiful blessings. Thank you for sharing. It is late and I will be back. I am catching up ewith everyone and miss visiting so I will be back to see older posts too. Hoping you are doing well since your surgery. I was praying with my app and came across your name. Made me smile. You are a kind heart. Have a beautiful week and I will come back to wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR 2022. HUGS AND LOVE

    1. Thank you so much! Are you Anne? I am trying to connect the dots with another comment on my last post, and am thinking you are one and the same.? If not, let me know. I remember Princess House...such beautiful things. I used to have a lovely carafe, we a copper stand. Not sure what happened to it. Your punch recipes sound good too. Anything with sherbet is good if you ask me. I love them all. And yes, I am a "kid at heart" as well. Jesus said that unless we have the faith of a little child we will not enter the kingdom of heaven, so I try to keep my faith sweet and simple like a child...He understand me I am sure. I do hope you will be back to visit again. Thank you so much. Happy New Year to you too!

  6. That silver spoon is an amazing gift. Your sister, btw, sure looks like you. You can't deny that you belong to the family. That description of your son setting up the camera and then leaping into place to be a part of the photo himself was very good. I can almost see it.

    1. Thank you. Ha Ha, people often think my sister and I must be twins, but we definitely are not...there are 4 1/2 years between us...and she is petite and was a brunette, and I am (was) almost 5'8" and was a redhead. Somehow we have "morphed" into each other over the years. It's funny. We don't think we look alike, but even if we do, it's okay. And yes, Scott has always been quite light on his feet..."He can leap tall buildings in a single bound...", oh wait, that was Superman...well...he can definitely leap tall fences in a single bound and jump over couches and let's just say his very agile, even at age 44! Amazing. Have a blessed day my friend!

  7. Oh, Pam, what a sentimental and precious gift that baby spoon is! I know you will treasure it - you have such a thoughtful sister. Loved seeing the photo of the whole gang, and that you were able to get by with just leftovers from the day before. I hate it when food goes to waste, and eating out is getting to be so expensive these days.
I'm so enjoying processing Christmas with you.
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Martha. Yes, I will treasure the baby spoon. I'm so glad my sister discovered it and gave it to me now. It just really touched my heart. And yes, the leftovers were really good and we all were well fed and satisfied and ate too much! Still trying to get rid of a few things. I guess we just really over-cooked!! But it's the holidays and that is just what happens! LOL. I do hope that your Christmas was very special. I know it was difficult because of it being the first Christmas without your own dear mother. My heart goes out to you as I know exactly how that feels. My mother has been gone for 15 years, and I still can't quite believe it...maybe that's why the baby spoon hit me so hard. It's the "little things" that mean a lot. Treasured memories that give us joy even if there are a few tears in the process...it's okay. (((hugs))) to you my friend. And have a blessed New Year!

  8. What a lovely post!
The spoon gift is very touching and was so kind of your sister to give it to you.
About the jelly and marmalade. Don't worry about using them by the expirations date. They still have at least a year afterward to still be safely consumed. .

    1. Thank you, Anne. Yes, the baby spoon really got to me! My mother has been gone 15 years, which I can't believe, and then something like this just blows me away! I am sure she was smiling down at us two sisters enjoying that moment. Regarding the marmalade, etc., yes, I am sure it will be good for a while as they haven't been opened. We just don't eat much of that kind of stuff even though I am sure they are very good. If I knew someone locally who would enjoy them I would gladly share them rather than see them go to waste. Oh well, maybe I should have a tea party and use them on some kind of scones or biscuits or something fun...idea!! Happy New year!!

  11. OMW, what a remarkable celebration! I don't know where to begin ... except if I were part of that Dirty Santa exchange I'd be looking to steal the garlic and chili chutney! (Never mind that I've never tasted chutney; it just sounds delish!) I love the idea of you sisters settling on a combo pot-luck dinner; no muss, no fuss! As others have remarked, your baby spoon touched my heart! I don't know that people do that sort of thing anymore? I know I didn't when my son was a baby. Might be a fun tradition to (re)start, wouldn't it?

    1. It would be a fun tradition, if I knew any of any new babies coming along. Alas, I think my grandbaby days are over after having only one. Maybe eventually there will be a great-grandbaby...But I don't think modern mothers want to polish silver...LOL. Yes, the pot-luck leftover dinner was perfect. And you are welcome to come get the chutney!!! Just tell me when you're coming!! I leave a light on for you. LOL. Love ya, and Happy New Year!

  12. Your holiday looked like a wonderful celebration of family, good food and surprises, Pamela. Pot luck meals are always wonderful too! The silver spoon was lovely to see and I can tell it was your favorite gift of Christmas. I rather liked Mark the Moose myself. We have done gift exchanges like the one you mentioned, only here it New England it was called a Yankee Swap and I actually wound up with something I liked after all the swapping was done. It has been my pleasure to read your posts this past year. Thank you for visiting and commenting on my posts as well. Sending our best wishes to you and John for a Happy New Year.

I think every part of the country has some variety of this fun game, and we have had some very fun times with it through the years...and have gotten some pretty funny gifts along with a few good ones thrown in as well. It's all in good fun. Oh, I've enjoyed getting to know you as well, and look forward to even better times in the new year!! Happy New Year to you and yours!!

  13. Yes, indeed, you had a very special Christmas. I like the idea of you having a "Pot Luck" dinner with your family. I prefer eating at home on the holidays. It's more special. We have had a few "eating out" holidays. The imoportant thing is that you and your family were together. Peace and blessings.

If I'd ever seen it before I'd forgotten all about it, and it was such a pleasant surprise to have it once again. My mother's been gone to heaven for 15 years, and it just seemed to bring her closer to me to be able to hold this spoon that she fed me with. Yes, very priceless! And yes, my son is quite agile and quick...always has been...and I am amazed that we all look like we've been standing there waiting for someone to take the picture. It really did turn out good. Yes, it was a wonderful Christmas. I trust that you also had a wonderful Christmas with your family? And here we are almost to New Years!! Happy New Year!
