Still Processing Christmas...Day One

Technically, Christmas is over...at least the day we celebrate Christmas is over. But Christmas itself is not over!  It's still lingering in our minds and hearts and spirits...and probably still lingering in our homes in the decorations, leftovers in the fridge, gift wrap and packaging in the trash, cookies and pies and candies still lurking around tempting us to keep nibbling away at things we shouldn't...and hopefully in our memories...sweet memories especially...

Welcome to Christmas memories from our house and my heart...

Christmas morning started out with a lovely sunrise...

Which was only preceded by a magnificent sunset on Christmas Eve as we traveled to church for the Christmas Eve service:

And as we lit each of the Advent candles, it was so wonderful to sing the familiar Christmas carols and hear the Christmas story once again as we lit the candles of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love, and then we lit the center Christ Candle to remind us that the Light of the world was born this night. "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them a light has shined." Isaiah 9:2 "You, O Lord, have multiplied the nation, You have increased its joy. For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder. His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:3, 6) And we were once again reminded that Jesus is also called Emmanuel, for in Him God is with us.  This is what Christmas is really all about...and I am so thankful that we started out our Christmas Eve and Day with these special reminders of why we are celebrating.

As I sat in the choir loft singing a
(this video was actually from our church last year, but same song)

Celtic Silent night with our choir, the congregation was passing along the "light of Christ" to their neighbors

Such a beautiful and peaceful way to usher in Christmas...
On our way home we drove around our neighborhood to see if there were any Christmas lights shining, and we were surprised to find quite a few. Our neighborhood is a rather modest community of mostly manufactured homes.  There were no elaborate displays like one would expect in larger communities, but this one above touched my heart.  There in the middle of their Christmas candy cane lights and hanging icicle lights, was a beautifully lit cross, reminding us of why Jesus came to earth in the first place...to save us all from our sins. We must never forget the price He paid for our redemption.

And then we went home to prepare for what would come in the morning:
Son Scott, who had gotten home too late from work to go with us to church, was busily preparing one of his Christmas gifts for our family, a batch of my grandmother's Sand Tart cookies! (recipe can be found on that link to a much older post from past.)

I was amazed that he had these all baked and the kitchen cleaned up by the time we got home. What a great guy!!

And next, Santa Claus had to slip in and distribute the gifts for the "kids" who would be arriving in the morning for Christmas day...

Lily Grace and Baby Elva had fun watching Santa at work...

Oh, look who got a stocking hung by the chimney with care:

Next morning, the "kids" and Grandpuppies arrived, ready for fun:

Sugar and Spice saying hello to "Uncle Scott"...

And then discovering that they had a special stocking filled with new toys just for them, which kept them occupied and happy for the rest of the morning:

Sweet Daughter in Love Rose and Son Benton, opening their gifts...

And son Scott and Daddy  sharing a good laugh over a very "interesting" fun gift sent from a relative..."Pooh Ping Pong"...there's always gotta be a silly gift somewhere in the bunch...and this was the silliest ever...

Thankfully Lily Grace's gifts were much better...

She got a couple of new outfits sent from her Auntie Peggy and Uncle Billy, among other things...

Yes, I know, our family is a bit "touched in the head" sometimes, but we do have fun...

And we do love to eat.  While opening our gifts, the hamloaf was baking in the oven with the scalloped potatoes, and butternut squash, green beans, rolls...

And oh, I almost forgot, Rose also made some deviled eggs! It was a delicious and simple dinner, and I "believe" everyone was happy and quite satisfied!

We ate off of my "good Wedding China", on a plastic Christmas tablecloth, but I did use red cloth napkins...LOL.  Tried to keep things simple but still special.

Speaking of special, our sweet daughter in law, (with a little help from her hubby the carpenter) created some wonderful signs for us.  She asked us for a special verse or saying that was meaningful...and the above picture is exactly what my hubby said.

And then she looked on my blog somewhere and found this verse below and created this sign for me:

And also this one I mentioned particularly, because of course, we live "beside the still waters" (pond).

Another sweet gift was this set of jigsaw puzzles:

I said this is where I want to live someday:

Well, maybe not with the snow. LOL. Actually, I feel like we are pretty close to living there already.

Oh, one more very special thing that happened on Christmas day. For some time we have not had much communication with our grandson Noah, who is our only grandchild, and also the son of our son Matthew who passed away from cancer in 2014.  So staying in touch with him is especially meaningful to us. But he is 22 years old and a typical young man living his life and not really realizing just how much it means to us to hear from him.  And the fact that he lives in Maine makes it a bit more difficult to just run up and visit anytime.  So anyway, long story short...recently Noah and some friends have embarked on an adventure of a lifetime.  I told my hubby they are like the pioneers of old, searching for new lands to "conquer" and begin a new life.  Two couples have set out across the country in campers, working their way along as they head south to warmer and hopefully more economically productive locations. And recently he decided to start responding to my texts, by sending me a few pictures of the sunsets as he travels:
Ah, he's a young man after my own heart!! He loves the sunsets just like I do!

And better yet, on Christmas day he called us and talked and talked and talked, and excitedly told us all about their journey and their hopes and dreams and plans and schemes...and told us about his girlfriend that we realized we had actually met at his graduation party 3 years ago...and well, even though some things may not be exactly ideal about this trip, it is a new beginning and he is happy and full of the joy of the adventure...and you know what?  I believe God will take care of the rest of the details...I don't need to worry or "preach"...I just need to pray for their safety and that God will guide them and keep them on the right path as they seek their new adventures.  My hubby and I both agree that keeping the communication going with him is the most important thing we can do right now. And I have to tell you, this truly made my Christmas day complete.

After the hubbub died down and the "kids" went back to their house, our son Scott went to work on his next gift for the next Christmas family gathering that was arriving on Sunday afternoon...yes, you heard that right...

These cookies are my mother's famous "orange cookies", (click that link for the rest of that story) and she would bake these anytime the family was coming home.  Now not only Scott, but at least one of my nieces that I know of, carries on this same tradition in memory of my mom. And so he wanted to have them ready for my sister and her hubby and their daughter and her hubby when they arrived Sunday after church.

Oh, these pillows are a gift from our kids too.  And they say what I want to say right now...
"Merry Christmas to all...to all a good night"

Stay tuned for "Still Processing Christmas-Day Two" coming up in a day or two, as I continue to process everything. It's been a very beautiful and meaningful Christmas here.
I hope it has been for you as well. I look forward to hearing your stories.

So, until next time,

Amen!

  1. You and your family are such loving, beautiful, kind, and I will say it, CHARMING folks! What a fun time you all had, such good sports. Thank you so much for sharing the recipes, as the cookies that your son Scott whipped up just look extremely delicious. DIL Rose's new haircut is so pretty. I love pixie cuts on the younger set.

    1. Thank you so much Holly. (BTW, my DIL Rose's mother's name was Holly, and she passed away not too many months after Rose and Benton married, after a long illness. So Holly is a special name to her, and also she is very much a daughter to me. And the haircut was a necessity...She and Benton both had Covid in August, and they also got the antibody infusion, which I believe saved their lives. However, as a result, they are both losing their hair at quite an alarming rate! So she decided to cut her hair and hopefully it will help it to come back in better. I pray so. But given the choice of hair or life, we'll take life, right??? Praise God!) thank you for your kind words about our family. You are so sweet. We do have a good time together...we can be somewhat silly, but we are blessed and SO thankful to have each other. And yes, the cookies are great! The Sand Tarts are a lot of work to make, so I am glad he took that job over for me! He is a great cook too...worked in many restaurants over the years... I do hope you are doing well and that God is blessing you in many special ways. (((hugs))) to you my dear friend.

  2. Looks and sounds like you had a most wonderful Christmas dear Pam. I love it that your son baked those cookies and then cleaned up! YES! My kind of man! Oh I am thrilled that you heard from your grandson. What a true blessing from our Lord. You Christmas food looks delicious. And...I am hungry right about now too so those pictures are truly inviting. I pray that you and your precious family have a most wonderful New Year filled with God's blessings that will overflow your life. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

    1. Thank you, Cindy. We did have a wonderful time. And yes, Scott is a great cook and baker...and I am VERY thankful he cleans up well in all ways! LOL. He would make some lucky lady a wonderful hubby, but in God's good time. She will need to be a very special lady for certain. And yes, we are thrilled to hear from our grandson too, and we are praying the calls /texts keep coming. He is a very unique and special young man and we just pray God's very best for him in every way. We know God is able to "do exceedingly abundantly above all we could ask or think"...Eph. 3:20 Thank you again dear friend.

Y'alls food looks heavenly. Bet it was.
I noticed you "wrap" gifts with gift bags like I do! *lol* And your decorations are so pretty.
    Blessings. xx

    1. I'm so glad you were able to spend Christmas with family. I saw the pictures on Facebook and it looked like you had a wonderful time. And yes, I "wrap" gifts the easiest way I can...these boys just tear them open and don't care how they are wrapped. Although now they are good at saving the bags neatly for next year. LOL. Frugality is our middle name here. LOL. Thank you for your kind words. I hope we can get together in the New Year!!

  4. Dear Pam, This was such a sweet Christmas from the church service to the end. The cookies, the signs from that sweet Rose. All of it was so perfect. It is the mixture of old and new that makes Christmas so sweet. Good plates on a plastic tablecloth are perfect. We try hard to keep up the old. Now, for my thoughts on the grandson. I am so happy he called and you are right to just hope to keep the lines of communication open. He won't forget you and to get excited over those sunset pictures is a start. I pray those sunset pictures keep coming. My son was the one who worried senseless. When he and Katie moved in together before they were married I thought I was just burst with sadness, but I knew that Katie had been so good for him. I also knew they knew I didn't approve but I just bulked up and kept on a praying. God has blessed me ten fold there. They are married and doing so well and coming to church and surprised us Christmas Eve with news of a baby on the way. I can't put it on the blog yet because she wants to wait a little longer to tell her work place. So yes, sunset pictures are good!!!

    1. Oh, what wonderful news about the (whisper) baby on the way!!! Your home is going to be filled with so MUCH joy and laughter!! What a blessing! Shhhh, mums the word. And so thankful that God has blessed them and is showing them the best way. I pray that for our Noah. He was brought up in a Christian home and loved so much by all. When his daddy died Noah was only 14. It's been challenging for his mother, but she's a wonderful person and has done a great job. I guess times are so different these days for young people...and we just have to love them and live Christ before them the best way we can. God loves them even more than we do, and we know that He will work all things together for their good...even the things that we don't fully comprehend. So I am praying and trusting God to do exactly that...and yes, the sunset pictures are a great start. I'm so happy for you and your sweet family!!!!

  5. Well you may be a bit nutty, but you know how to have fun. I'm glad that your grandson has been in touch. Perhaps he is wending his way to Florida. What a good baker your son is. Not one thing was baked in this house and it felt strange.

    1. Thank you for seeing through the craziness to the real me. LOL. Yes, we do know how to have fun. Life is too short to be stuffy. I wish our grandson was headed toward Florida, but I think they are headed more toward the southwest instead of the southeast. But we shall see. Only God knows exactly what His plans are for them...and I am praying they "are good plans...to give them a future and a hope..." (Jeremiah 29:11) God is able. Yes, our son is a great baker. He enjoys doing that each Christmas. He's worked in many restaurants over the years, so cooking/baking is in his blood. But he prefers working outdoors these days. Less stressful. I am sorry nothing was baked at your house...but didn't you go to your sister's house or someplace? I'm sure there was plenty of good stuff. Sometimes we bake just because we think we're supposed to, but then I don't even eat half of the stuff I bake! LOL. Have a wonderful week my friend. Stay warm!

  6. I enjoyed my visit here tonight. We baked cookies too, but did not eat many. I hope to make some snowflake sugar cookies for our next women's Bible journaling event. Does Lily help you in the kitchen?

    1. My son baked a lot of cookies, but divided them up into packages for our family to take home. He didn't leave many for us, however, but probably that's for the best. We have too much stuff already! I would like to see your snowflake sugar cookies. And yes, "Lily" does love to help me in the kitchen! She's great little helper! LOL. Thank you for your visit. I hope you have a wonderful week.

Praying that God will dispel the shades of gloom in our country and bring us renewed hope and joy and peace! I hope you have a wonderful week. Wish I could send you an orange cookie, but alas...they are practically all gone! LOL.

  8. BEAUTIFUL!!! P.S. You are not loose in the head, my friend (grin)---that made me snort out loud, because if you are, I am, lolol. You tell Ms. Lily Grace the monkey family and the sloth are starting to behave themselves somewhat, wink.

    1. Oh dear, when the monkeys and sloths behave, better watch out. They may be plotting something...LOL. I know Lily Grace can't wait to meet them! They will make quite the little group, won't they? Hopefully they can keep their "parents" in line. LOL. Happy New Year, my friend. It's going to be a very wonderful year...God has such GOOD plans for you... (((hugs)))

  9. What a super Christmas you enJOYed! Everything looks so delicious. (Tom didn't get his Christmas ham until last night. Long story, but it's all good.) Those 'pooh' pongs are hysterical! So many things 'touch' my heart -- Scott's baking/clean up ... gifts for Sugar and Spice ... the personalized signs. And mostly, Noah's call. Having two 20-something grands wrapped in their own busy lives, I completely understand.

There's more to come, but I am trying to catch my breath before I start rambling again...LOL. God bless you dear friend. Happy New Year.

    1. Yes, we did have a wonderful Christmas. Seems like a miracle to me, because I was SO far behind in everything this year and didn't think it would come together, but God brought it all together perfectly...He always does. And yes, Lily had her own stocking and got a few little gifts, mostly from others. She is quite the little "star" around here. LOL. It's all good fun and pure joy. God delights in our joyfulness, even in the silly things. I do hope you had a pleasant and joyful Christmas as well. "Emmanuel, God with us!" Peace and blessings to you and yours as well...and Happy New Year!

Yes, this Christmas has been very special and I am savoring all of it as long as I can! Blessings to you and yours...and Happy New Year almost!

I have many Cabbage Patch dolls still in boxes and plan to give one to Ella and one to Shea when they are a bit older. My dolls are everywhere. My son Nick says he is going to take their shoes so they can not get up and walk around at night! I say you are a silly grown up thinking the dolls are watching you sleep. hahaha...I loce your phots, the shares and your son baking and cleaning the kitchen. WHat a great guy!Take care. I will be back. HUGS and LOVE

    1. Oh, I love that you enjoy your dolls too. I know, my husband often says he hears my dolls running around playing at night too. We all have fun with them, even the guys are really good sports. Since I never had a daughter or a granddaughter, this is my way of being a little girl again. I told my husband the other day that grandmothers are just antique little girls. (We had 3 sons, and we have one grandson, age 22 now, so no one wanted dolls but me!) Lily Grace thanks you for your kind compliment. I have yet to try on her new outfits as she is still in her Christmas dress until Christmas things are put away. Then she can dress up in something else. She's fine with that and enjoys being a part of the Christmas "decor". LOL. Yes, our son the baker is a great guy. He'll make some lucky girl a great husband, but so far no one has been quite special enough to capture his heart. God knows, and I leave it in His capable hands. Thank you for your visit today. I do hope you will come again! Blessings to you in the New Year!
