Friday Foto Friends: Let There Be Lights!

Yesterday afternoon and evening we had a real treat! We spent the afternoon with my hubby's brother and wife and their son and our son and his wife in St. Augustine!  Actually, this was our "Christmas get-together" with the "in-laws" since we can't actually be together with them on Christmas.
So I will proceed with the last pictures first and then move on to the first pictures last, because I know you want to see "the Lights" of St. Augustine!

These pictures were taken actually as we were leaving downtown St. Augustine.  We had already walked all around town before dark...it was such a lovely, perfect evening...

But we wanted to get out of town before the real crowds started pouring in for this festival of lights.

Sorry this is a little blurred as I was taking the pictures as we drove past these places...

"Nights of Lights"...they certainly were beautiful!

We had discussed the possibility of getting on the trolley and taking the tour around town to see all of the lights, but when we found out the cost, somewhere around $80.00 PER PERSON, we decided we could see all we wanted to see from our cars just fine!

This was taken as we went over the bridge...there were many boats in the intracoastal waters there, but we were moving too fast to get any good pictures

We finally made it back to our kids' store parking lot, where they had left their vehicle, and this is what we could see from there...the almost full moon and the St. Augustine Lighthouse lighting the way:

Now, here's a few pictures from our walkabout in downtown St. Augustine before dark:
Blimey! I think I see a Pirate!!!

Pretty trees and decorations everywhere

And these folks even took their monkey out for a stroll...they did give us permission to take these pictures...

It's not every day you see a monkey in a stroller, now is it???

Our son "Ben" thought perhaps he had another new business he didn't know about...and it even had a Rose at the top of the sign...it must be "a sign"....LOL.

While the Steiner women (excluding me) were doing a little shopping, the Steiner men sat down for a rest, and of course I couldn't resist this wonderful photo op:
Aren't they a handsome group of men? We were sorry our son Scott couldn't join us, but he had to work. This is our nephew Nicholaus, my hubby John, our son Benton, and my BIL, BILL!

Then they took a picture of me with my two guys.  I was being squeezed on that bench between two big handsome guys!

Next we walked around to the "Plaza de Constitucion", "The Oldest Public Space in America"! How's that for you history buffs? You do know that St. Augustine is the oldest city in America, don't you???

It was a beautiful park, and a perfect evening to enjoy it.

Here are some sights around the park:

They call this "The Treasury" building...I didn't get close enough to read the plaque telling the history, so I guess we should look it up. Here's the LINK.  I guess we should have had a looksy inside. I must be gorgeous!

And of course there are these lovely horse drawn carriages everywhere, if you'd like to do the tour that way:

And HERE, for your listening pleasure, are the church bells ringing at Trinity Parish, which has been there for nearly 200 years...

I wish Lily Grace had been with us to hear these church bells ringing...Did you read her post about "Christmas Bells Are Ringing Ringing yesterday?  She would have loved this!!

Here's Nicholaus and Benton, discussing the history of this cannon.  Oh, btw, these two "First Cousins" were born on the exact same day, just 31 years apart!!

Benton and Rose were enjoying this lovely night out on the town, away from work for a while!

And here's my BIL  Billy and his lovely wife Peggy, and Nicholaus again. Their daughter Shannon wasn't able to come, and we certainly missed her.  You might remember that we prayed for Shannon a few months ago after a serious car accident...she is doing very well now...walking again without the aid of a walker and also back to swimming again. She has a scholarship pending for swimming at a college in Georgia, but she still has a ways to go to get back to swimming that well...so please continue to pray for her. Thank you.

And as we were leaving the plaza, here were the towers at Flagler College in the waning sun:

Really beautiful scene...

Oh, here's a little bit of Florida scenery that you really need to see:

And this gorgeous balcony porch with the baskets of flowers hanging all over:

Well, I think I will close with this photo of the Lighthouse and the moon again...

A fitting reminder that at Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ,
"The Light of the World".

"Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying,
“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness,
but have the light of life.”
John 8:12

Merry Christmas!

    1. I hope you and Dave and Rose and Benton can become friends! And I love that you are able to laugh at silly stuff today. I pray you are having a good day. I know you were going shopping. I went shopping and had a meltdown and came home. Happens every year about this time. Just can't handle shopping...I'd rather have a root canal! LOL. Just kidding. Never had one of those and I don't want one. Love you, Linda. If I could buy you that flamingo I would, but I think he's too pricey for both of us! LOL.

    1. Yes, those are real petunias in those baskets! We have had a very mild winter thus far, and so flowers are still blooming. They were really lovely...I was amazed to see them too. Merry Christmas!

  3. Lovely pictures. I am so glad to hear Shannon is doing so well. St. Augustine is really pretty. I am sure the tourists will shell out the $80 for the trolley but yes, I would have just walked and driven my car. I love the photo of the lighthouse with the full moon.

    1. Thank you, Sandy. Yes, it was a lovely evening. And there were plenty of tourists about riding the trolley and the buggies, etc. We walked and walked and then drove by the lights as they turned them on. It was beautiful. A perfect evening with family. God is good.

  5. I so enjoyed taking this tour with you today, Pamela. No, I didn't know that St. Augustine is America's oldest city-how cool is that? You certainly got some beautiful photos, my friend. And I'm so glad to hear that Shannon is much improved. God is so good!
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Martha. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour. St. Augustine is rich in history. Most people who don't live in Florida don't realize its significance. It's a very interesting place to visit. I wish we could have done more, but we only live an hour away, so we have no excuse! LOL. Yes, Shannon is doing much better physically. Still needs prayers for her emotional state...but I believe God is at work for certain. Thank you for your continued prayer.

  7. Pam: I enjoyed your tour of St. Augustine. My mother, grandmother, and I were there when I was in 5th grade. I would not have taken the trolley tour, either. I love the lights of the city. Thank you for sharing your trip with us. Peace and blessings.

  10. What a fun time out with the family. I'm sure the brothers don't think of themselves as in-law's. 😁 The stores and lights are all so festive. Memory making times...

    1. That's true, the brothers aren't in-laws to each other, but some of us are in-laws...but we are one big happy family and so thankful to have each other. Yes, it was a wonderful day. To me, that was the best Christmas gift ever!

  11. It's lovely you got to spend time with your sister. Just today our province announced new restrictions on gatherings until the end of January due to the newest variant and it's rapid transmissions. I don't need to cancel any plans except maybe to go to the Christmas Market next week. I love all your photos and laughed out loud when I saw the big pretzel sign. Pretzels are on my mind right now.

    1. Oh dear, more restrictions...it's really such a shame, especially with the holidays upon us. So far no such restrictions here in Florida, and hopefully there won't be. Yes, we got a kick out of the pretzel sign too, and you are right, it would be nice to have a big pretzel right now!! A nice warm one, fresh baked would be wonderful! I do hope you will have a blessed and wonderful Christmas.

  12. Oh wow, Pam. I'd no idea the Christmas lights were a 'thing.' What a shame, they couldn't make the trolley tour more affordable. I can't believe I lived in Florida so long and never visited St. Augustine. Seeing your photos, now I want to visit even more. Hopefully (cross fingers) that will happen next summer!

  13. Our travel folks organize a bus trip and overnight stay in St. Augustine to see the lights. It's a little to expensive for my budget right now but it would be fun! Great photos, Pam, and nice to see Ben and Rose and your other family members! Merry Christmas! xo

    1. Oh, I am sure it would be fun, and I can imagine it would also be expensive to do. And be prepared for a LOT of walking if you do go!! But it is very interesting and I wouldn't mind going back when we have more time (and money) to see all the different sights. It's been a long time. Our senior class went there for our senior trip. That was a very long time ago!!! Merry Christmas to you dear friend.

    1. Thank you, Susan. We had a great time. Actually, I was resting with the men while the other two ladies shopped. I am not a great shopper, plus we had walked over a mile and I didn't want to have to carry anything back to the car! LOL. Have a blessed and wonderful Christmas!

  15. Pamela, I enjoyed the tour as it’s always a delight to see holiday lights and St Augustine did itself proud for sure with these displays. It’s always a challenge to get clear photos from a moving vehicle and when there are lights, even more so. That said, you did well in showing us the beauty of these displays, and I also learned something about the city that I didn’t know before. Also nice to see you and family members and glad to read your niece is doing better day by day.

And yes, St. Augustine is a city rich in history...well worth the visit!! Thank you for visiting, and I hope and pray you have a wonderful journey to visit with your loved ones these next few days, etc. Merry Christmas!

  16. Oh Pam you got some GREAT FAMILY PICTURES! Great shots. I've never been to st. augustine but my folks went with some high school pals many years ago, so I got to see their pictures. Looks like a real interesting city, OLD AND WITH LOTS OF HISTORY, so I would prolly love it. Looks like y'all had a fun fun time. Love all the pretty lights. In the evenings we either WALK if we feel like it....or drive to different neighborhoods to see all the lights. I love this festive season. Gets me through the EARLY DARK WINTER doldrums. I just hate the time change, I really do. (sigh.....) Hope you've been feeling better this week and getting better able to do some Christmas activities, I know how you enjoy them and hate just having to rest/sit/recover etc etc etc. It's no fun. Love that moon picture! My Mother loved the moon....she was always outside looking at it!! I love to see it over the ocean. I THINK it may be full this week??? Love ya, HUGS!!

    1. Yes, I understand about the early dark winter doldrums. I don't like it getting dark so early and it has really been harder on me this year than usual. I had a real hard time when we lived in Maine...because it was also so COLD, and winter lasted SO LONG! But here we have sunshine and beautiful days and it has been great especially this past week. I don't do a lot of just sitting. Actually I do better if I am up moving around, but then I tire out and go back and sit (or take a nap). But going to St. Augustine was wonderful...perfect evening for it, and it felt really good to be out walking. I know you would love it there. It is similar to your Charleston area, but in a different way...very old and historic.. Love you and thank you for writing. Lily sends her love too. xoxoxoxoo
