Me: "Prayer is just the beginning. Listening to God's voice and not all the voices of the world is the next step. Tune in to Christ, and tune out all the "noise" of the media and chatterboxes out here in social media telling us how to think and what to do. I don't pretend to have all the answers, but I know Who does, and praying helps me to hear what He has to say on these matters. Then I am better prepared for appropriate action. I like the saying "What would Jesus do?" and prayerfully seek His direction before acting and/or speaking out."
Friend of Friend: "But to recommend prayer and faith, even as a starting point, is to assume that anyone who reads your message has the same beliefs that you do. I respect your right to belief what you will, but do remember that there are those of us who carry different beliefs, and that we are not all starting from the same place."
Me: "I appreciate and respect your response. And I certainly respect the fact that many do not share the same faith and beliefs. Perhaps it should be better said that we all need to take a deep breath, and give serious contemplation to what is truly best for all. I realize that many will come up with totally opposite responses, but we can at least agree to talk rationally and calmly and peacefully to come up with some reasonable solutions. "Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me". That is a good starting place."
Friend of Friend: "Thank you. Yes, we can agree on that. There's so much going on, so much agony, and I just feel absolutely lost. I've walked in demonstrations, I've called my Congresspeople, I vote in every single election. I rant and rave on Facebook! And yet none of it seems to matter. It's all so dismal."
Me: "There is a lot of sorrow in our world/nation these days, about many things. And sadly, we are often not given all of the information about all of the positive things that are also happening in our country. There are good things happening, and many many good people working hard to restore our nation to peace and a place of promise and hope for our children's future. When all we listen to or hear are the negative voices we miss out on the positive news. This has been a very sad and disturbing week for our country. Mental illness and people with evil hearts do so much hurt and damage. But these people are not the norm. They are the disturbed exceptions. Our nation is filled with so many really wonderful, good, hard working, loving people. Let us unite together to overcome the forces of evil that are trying to dismantle and destroy our nation."
No further response.
What I wish I could have said: The reason people feel so lost and like nothing seems to matter and "it's all so dismal" is because you are correct. When people do not have faith in God and do not have the hope that faith in Jesus Christ gives us, everything must look dismal. Without Christ in our world and hearts, there is no hope. Those of us who have faith in Christ can get down on our knees and pray and know that God does hear our prayers, and He WILL give us answers and appropriate ways to help those in need and respond to the crisis around us. I have hope in my heart because I know that God is with us. He is in the midst of all suffering and trials and sorrows, and He is giving comfort to those who grieve. Without faith in God we can never combat the evil presence that is in the world. Sadly, so many have become a part of that greater evil because they are fighting for the wrong cause...they have allied themselves with the forces of darkness when they continue to fight against all forms of godliness and righteousness.
I have shared all of this conversation as a prelude to my sermon notes for this week.
Our message on Sunday was taken from the book of Matthew, chapter 9:35 - chapter 10:8
- We have great news! I am a part of the church that knows The Shepherd...where people's lives are being transformed! (We do have the answer to all that is wrong with the world!)
- I want to bring them in so they can hear the Good News of Jesus Christ!
- Who do we belong to?
- We become harassed by the world (social media especially these days)...and sometimes we give up, lay down, play dead.
- Jesus said seek out those who are without a shepherd...
- Without Jesus in my heart: pills won't help take away the anxiety and fear...(neither will Marching, ranting, calling our congressmen),
- People are powerless to change their own lives...
- Are we reaching out to our "cranky neighbors" (wherever they may be...not necessarily next door)...perhaps they are family members...Who are the harassed and hopeless in our own community?
- Jesus' response is compassion...
- When He sees our world...it through His eyes of compassion.
- Compassion is the complete opposite of indifference
- Our life as a Christian is more important than football games or other social event...
- Jesus is the only One who can solve the problems of our world today...
- Jesus is the only answer.
- We need to prepare ourselves to live as a follower of Christ...we are called to reach out, step up and step out to His people...
- But we get greedy...we have been given a gift and we want to hold onto it and not share it...the knowledge of Jesus Christ as our Savior and healer and redeemer...Our only hope in this world...
- If Jesus is calling you...and you just sit back...then who will go?
- Our activities at our churches need to be rooted in the gospel...shared with others... we should share the gospel with others as we share food, clothing, or whatever we give to the needy.
- If not you, then who?
- We may say, "that's not my calling..."
- Then, what is your calling?
- Your calling is not to sit back and watch...
- Compassion is not a spectator sport...it requires action.
- If not you, who then?
I've been born again in Jesus' name
And in Jesus' name I come to you
To share his love as he told me to.
He said 'Freely, freely you have received;, freely, freely give.
Go in my name, and because you believe others will know that I live.
All pow'r is giv'n in Jesus' name
in earth and heav'n in jesus name
And in Jesus' name I come to you
To share his pow'r as he told me to.
He said 'Freely, freely you have received;, freely, freely give.
Go in my name, and because you believe others will know that I live.
God gives us life in Jesus' name
he lives in us in Jesus' name
And in Jesus' name I come to you
To share his peace as he told me to."
Thank you Pamela. I always enjoy your messages/posts. I don't always comment but today you have put out a very thoughtful and thought provoking message. It is very easy living 'down under' to not get involved in what is happening in the rest of the world, it only rarely touches us in a real/physical way. But we are all part of God's creation and so have a 'duty of care' I guess. Thanks for today's post :)

Thank you, Diana, for taking the time to comment today. It is always wonderful to hear from you, my neighbor from "down under" on the other side of the world! We are neighbors even though we may never meet in this life...but we share common needs and goals and desires in life...and, as you said, "we are all part of God's creation and so have a duty of care" for one another. We can encourage one another through this venue as well as face to face. So thankful for this blessing. Hope you are doing well. It is so good to hear from you today. Thank you again.
DeletePamela, your social media conversation with that friend of a friend was so compelling. She had genuine questions, and you had the Christ-provided genuine answers to offer. After my last blog about the sad state of incivility in this nation, this was a breath of fresh air for my soul. She obviously is suffering from the anxiety and fear we have when we aren't putting our full trust in the Lord. I do pray that your kind and understanding words planted the seed of faith within her, enough to find out more about the love of God.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, if not me, than who? May we all heed God's voice when He calls to us to move forward and spread the Good News of His Kingdom, His salvation and His blessings.
Blessings, my friend, and thank you for the inspiration here today!
Our work is becoming more and more difficult in these last days...the last days of this election season as well as the last days of the kingdom on earth. I really believe the Lord is preparing our hearts and our nation for His soon return. We need to be ready and to speak the truth in love wherever we can. We have the good news that others are dying to hear.
DeleteSuch a good post-thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jan. I thank the Lord for His message to us. I am just the messenger.
DeleteBlessings here!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Terri. You are a blessing to me. Hope you are having a good week. I'm trying to get caught up on reading, etc.
DeleteReally great post. I was thinking about the scripture that said Jesus couldn't do much in His town because of unbelief. People also pray thinking God should answer the prayer the way they think God should handle the problems. Your sermon notes sound very similar to what I heard this weekend at church, too. We have something most valuable to share wth the world ... the gospel. We are rich. We have the greatest treasure and can't keep it to ourselves. That photo is lovely.
ReplyDeleteYes, we do have a great treasure in the Gospel...Jesus Christ...the greatest gift and treasure of all. We truly are rich. Thank you for visiting. I love that God is teaching this to many across the land at the same time!!
DeleteAmen Pamela. We may hear the same message or sermon, and yes we all grow spiritually at different times, so the message can be received differently as the Holy Spirit reveals it to us. Many do have different beliefs, but there is only one True God and his message is the same...believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved and become his child. Afterwards we grow depending on seeking Him with our whole heart and reading the Bible (His Word to us) and obeying it in faith!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sylvia. Yes, I believe we are always in a growing process in our walk with the Lord. Every season brings a new lesson in one direction or another. This past year my "word" was renew...and I do believe God has been doing exactly that through these messages and the changes we are anticipating in moving, etc. New lessons all the time. God isn't finished with us yet!
DeleteFirst, love the picture and I seen the deer...peaceful picture. You put so much truth into your post, I am impressed. You laid out the gospel right on and gave understanding to how to walk with Him. Good post.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Betty. This was my weekly "sermon notes" based on the Sunday message at church. It helps me to take notes and remember the message better, and hopefully it also becomes a blessing to others here. Thank you for taking the time to visit and comment. It is always good to hear from you.
DeleteSometimes people think of faith as a vain hope and trying so hard but getting nothing in return, like they have to work and lean towards and make themselves kinda sort believe... but Jesus is real and He answers us back. Sometimes people don't know that and so they say these things.
ReplyDeleteI hope you can still post to her what you wished you could say, though I think what you did say was fire enough.
It only takes a spark when the heart is dry.
DeleteThank you, Sandi. I wish I could have said more, but sometimes the Spirit says just let it go and pray. You have said as much as she can understand at this point. I just have to trust that she was given some food for thought and that at some point in time someone else will provide the next level of "food" for her. God knows who she is and where her heart is. You are right...it only takes a spark to get a fire going...
DeletePam, Thank you for sharing this, especially the conversation with a friend of a friend. Jesus is truly the answer for this crazy, out of control world. Sadly, satan has blinded many eyes, and believers sometimes get it wrong too. It's truly impossible to legislate morality or even being a decent person--it's truly a heart issue.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Amen to that. And God knows exactly how to reach that person's heart. One little step at a time. I am praying for her to have a hunger and thirst for God that will keep her searching for answers. Good to hear from you today, Kim. Keep up the good work!!!
DeleteIts very nice post, really I read and like this blog post.
