In my humble opinion, Labor Day is the end of summer, and the day after Labor Day is the beginning of Fall...that's just how it is in my mind...September means people go back to work from their vacations, kids go back to school, the air starts a perceptible shift toward "cooler"...(well, here in Florida it may be a bit imaginary, but a girl can hope, can't she?) and I start to celebrate my favorite season of the year...Autumn, fall...my birth-month (September)! When I was in school I remember football games and cheerleading,
(for those who do "black and white Wednesday blog posts, this will be my B&W offering for this week...) |
But nowadays, I'm just getting a little bit into the spirit of fall...little dabs here and there, nothing quite so active as in days of yore...
Brought out a few fall things for the table and the china cabinet
And the front door...
The local flea market got a bit more active this past weekend after a sluggish, hot summer...and I found this lovely item that I just couldn't resist:
Yes it is an aluminum old tea kettle...and no, I'm not using it on my stove to boil my water for tea, but I am reserving it for use if we need it for a campfire...or if the power goes out and we need to boil water on the Coleman stove we bought last year for the hurricane...You just never know when you might need it...and I trust there will not be any hurricanes this year...please, Lord? I know some are already suffering from the effects of tropical storm Gordon, which missed us except for some rain...but I pray for those who are in its path that they will be safe.
Another sign of "fall" are these "Sand Pears", which were given to me this morning by our friends who attend our home Bible Study.
You can read the link for more information on this type of pear...they are very hard and not quite ripe yet, so they will sit out for a few days and see when they ripen if they are edible. I understand they are quite crisp and not like the kind you buy in the store...but they should make good pear sauce or maybe even a cobbler once they ripen...I'll let you know...
And fall also means churches get more actively preparing for their fall and winter ministries...the choir resumes practice after a summer break...and hubby and I decided to join our church choir. Last night was the first practice, and this is what I brought home...homework!
These are just a few of the songs we'll be working on...and then we will soon begin practicing for the Christmas Cantata as well.
I saw this article on Facebook yesterday: "Singing as a Natural Form of Therapy" by Professor Sarah Wilson and what I gather from this is that singing is really good for your brain and for you personally. After last night's workout/ introduction of these songs, I can say that I haven't worked my brain quite that hard in a long time...or my voice! This could make for an interesting autumn!! But singing for the glory of the Lord is something that I have always enjoyed doing, and haven't been able to do much of in a long time, so I am looking forward to the challenge! May God be glorified and the people be blessed by our choir's offering of praise. Kudos to our director and our pianist and the sound man! They have a lot to keep up with as well!!
So, what things are you looking forward to this fall? Taking any trips? I would love to do a fall trip to the mountains, but I'm not seeing it in our foreseeable future. But I think we will be busy enough practicing our scales and tuning our "instruments'" (voices) for singing...
Whatever you enjoy doing, make it memorable! Take pictures and share them with us! And have a blessed and happy autumn!!
Singing can indeed by therapeutic. Glad you joined your choir! I sang for years and miss it now.
ReplyDeleteRiver of Life is gorgeous. I found it here.. https://www.jwpepper.com/sheet-music/media-player.jsp?&type=audio&productID=10444073
I am glad I found it. So pretty.
I took singing lessons for years. My teacher sang at the Metropolitan opera chorus and drowned me out easily. Auditioning for her was nerve wracking to say the least. I like your fall decorations. I am not ready just yet as its still just too warm and beachy.
I like that kettle too! So old timey and homey. How I wish I could hear your choir singing that lovely song. :)
Thank you, Annie. I will let you know when we do sing it. It will be a few weeks, I'm sure. We need to work on it for a while first... I would love to hear YOU sing! I can imagine you have a lovely voice. They say that art and music go together, and you are an amazing artist, so I would imagine you are a wonderful singer as well. It is still too warm here for fall as well, but I am ready in my head for it, so I figure if I put out the decorations, fall will come. (Kind of like, "If you build it they will come...") Thank you again for your thoughts. I haven't sung in a choir in many years, since we had my MIL on the weekends for so long we weren't able to attend a regular church, so had a home church while she was with us. I also directed our choir in the last church my hubby pastored some years ago...that was an experience! Thankfully they were an old southern gospel kind of church choir and that made it pretty simple. They just loved to sing...and didn't really read notes...so we did simple songs with a lot of heart and spirit! This choir will be a little step up, but still a small country church...with they seem to enjoy the challenge of more difficult pieces. Should be fun. Have a blessed day my friend. Thank you again for popping in.
DeletePam: I enjoy hearing gospel music. I used to sing in a choir. I had an eardrum burst and that put me on the sidelines. My late friend Loretta's daughter leads our church choir and always has some wonderful songs. She also plays the piano for congregational songs and then the keyboard for the praise team.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry about your eardrum. That must have been very painful. Wow. I am glad that your church does have some good music and musicians. That means a lot! Worship and Praise with music is such an important part of the church service. Thank you for your thoughts.
DeleteI love music and always sang in the choir and our church praise and worship team for many years. I love your black and white photo! You were such a pretty teen! And now you're a pretty lady!
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you Nonnie. That was so long ago...over 50 years! Hard to believe...it seems like yesterday, and then again, it seems like that must have been a different lifetime ago! But thank you for your kind thoughts. I would love to sing with you sometime!! That would be so neat!!!!
DeleteSinging and laughing are the best medicines in the world to me. Love the Autumn decor too Pamela. Have a day od blessings my friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Toni. Yes, I agree that laughter is the best medicine, and I believe singing is right there beside it. I often sing in the shower or as I drive down the road by myself, listening to music on the radio. I'm sure people watching me as I drive and sing are wondering who I'm talking to... Thank you for popping in. Blessings to you today too!!
DeleteI love to decorate for fall also. Your table is very nice in autumn colors. I sang in the choir for many years. I have fond memories of Easter and Christmas cantatas. Thank you for you comment on my post. Hope you get to visit the mountains!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Karen. Decorating for fall makes me feel cooler, even if it isn't outside yet...it brings back fond memories of apple picking, apple pies, pumpkins, hayrides...so many things. Perhaps you should take the plunge and join your choir also...or does your church have one? Many churches don't today as they have changed the style of music away from traditional to totally contemporary. Our church still does mostly traditional, but with some contemporary thrown in. It is a good blend. I am hoping for a trip to the mountains...but we shall see...gotta convince hubby first...
DeleteI love the tea kettle and all your Fall colors coming out! I'm even more anxious for cooler temps and less humidity!! Very cute photo of you as Captain of the cheerleaders!! Love it!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Terri. Little by little I am bringing out fall. I've had enough of summer...and yes...especially the humidity. Praying those storms stay out to sea and don't swing our way. Thank you regarding the photo of me..that was many moons ago!!Couldn't quite get up in the air with a jump or cheer today. Thankfully, this was before the time that cheerleaders had to be gymnasts! LOL. I would never have made it! I was loud...that was my claim to fame. LOL.
DeleteThis is our second autumn in this location in Florida. It's still a little odd for me as my family and friends in colder climes talk about cooler temps. I feel a little "left behind" in that respect -- ha ha. I say that as I enjoy the comfort of my capri pants, short sleeves and sandals. And I do enjoy wearing them!
ReplyDeleteYour front door is lovely.
Fall is my favorite time of the year, too, Pamela. And coincidence? I think not! I, too, was a cheerleader in high school as well as captain my senior year. Such fun memories!
ReplyDeleteLove all your fall decor, too. Maybe if I did the same, I'd talk myself into believing that the temperatures outside were dropping. This has been a long, hot summer!
Blessings!
