Friday Foto Friends and a Dirty Little Secret

Good Friday Morning Everyone!  I skipped yesterday as I had some business to take care of, which I will explain as we move along here today.

When I last wrote you on Tuesday HERE, I was anticipating that this week I would begin to exchange my October decorations for the November and Thanksgiving decorations of Pilgrims and turkeys and such.  But we've had a little change of plans.

You may think I am planning a Tea Party, by the looks of all those teacups and teapots stacked up on the counter.  That would certainly be lovely, but that is not what's happening.

No, instead, we are taking care of a "dirty little secret" that has been bugging me for quite sometime. I usually make sure to crop this ugly thing out of the pictures that I share with you so you won't see it, but I can't hide it anymore! I've had enough!!!  See the photo below and I am sure you will "get the picture".

Yes, we have awful, wrinkled, terrible carpet in this house, and it is driving me crazy!

It goes throughout the great room (living & dining), the little den that is "My Room with a view",

And even into our master bedroom, which is visible from the great room.

When we bought this house a little over 3 years ago, the carpet was new, so we opted to leave it in place even though we would have preferred hard floors, but we had so many other necessities that needed to be repaired or upgraded in the house at that time and we just didn't have the money to go ahead and change the floors then. What we didn't know was that the carpet, although new, was very cheap, and that also it was not properly installed so that in time it began to stretch and wrinkle and show wear patterns much too soon.  Of course, once the furniture is in place, it is very difficult to do anything about that.

So anyway, to make a long story short, we have been discussing this situation for some time. I was at the point of wanting to just rip up the carpet and pull it out from under the furniture and live with bare plywood floors until something could be done. The carpet was becoming hazardous to my mental health as well as my physical health, because I have a tendency to trip over the ripples in my path if I don't consciously remember to pick up my feet.  And so, my hubby finally got tired of hearing me complain about this ugly carpet and the fact that I don't even want to invite people over because of it, blah, blah blah...and he, being the frugal one, was finally convinced that sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do and find a way to make it work.

And so we called a person who advertised that he installed flooring and invited him over to discuss this subject.  After being in sticker shock over his initial quote for the labor and me proclaiming that would be impossible for us...we never dreamed it would be so much and me practically starting to break down into tears in front of this fellow...he pulled out his calculator and started reworking his figures and finally after a lot of calculations he came up with a much better figure. But then we had to also find out the cost of the flooring itself...much to my chagrin, the one I had picked out some time ago had practically doubled in price...and also this man said he didn't particularly like that product and preferred another from a different store, blah blah blah...So here we go again...Anyway, to try and make this long story short (I'm not doing a very good job of that, am I?) we ended up going to the other big box home improvement store and actually found a different product at a lower price and yes they had enough of it in stock and it could be picked up on the selected date, which happens to be this coming Monday...and this man and his crew happen to be available next week to do this...and SO, guess what I am doing?

Yes, that is why all the teapots and teacups, etc. were stacked up on the kitchen counter...we have to pack up all of the "stuff" in all these rooms so they can move the furniture around to install the new flooring beginning on Tuesday morning!
So here we go!  This is as far as I've gotten so far...

I still have all of this...

and this...

And Pamela's Victorian Cottage and friends...

And this...

and this...

and this...

Not to mention all of the stuff in our bedroom on top of the dressers and vanity, etc....
Yeah, we might as well be moving! LOL. But no, thank you. That would be MUCH more!

And so, if you don't hear from me for a week, you will know why...we will be packing up all this stuff and then as they complete the flooring in one room we can begin to put things back in place, but we will be camping out in our son's old bedroom ; no change that...we will be camping out in the "Guest Room", and storing boxes of stuff in our son's old bedroom for a few days until the dust settles and we can move back into our own room. And speaking of dust settling...I am counting on there being a lot less dust in the house once that nasty carpet is out of here.  Carpet holds dust and sand and dirt that no vacuum cleaner can ever get out...and so I am hoping for a much more dust free environment once this is all said and done!

Oh, one more thing...I wanted to mention God's perfect timing in all of this.  Several weeks ago our kids had decided to take a few days off from Dixie Cottage and have a little "vacation". They have a friend who fills in for them occasionally at the store and she was willing to work for a few more days so they could get away.  We had originally talked about taking a little trip together for a few days, but then decided not to do that due to cost, etc., and so the kids are just going to do some little day trips and also celebrate their 5th anniversary, which is next week, and we don't have to work at the store since the other lady is taking care of it, and therefore we are free to take on this project next week!  The man doing the work also had a break in his other projects and next week was perfect for him...
And there you have it!

Romans 8:28
"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."

I truly believe that when it is time to take care of something, God helps all the pieces fall into place to work it all out for our best.  He knows our needs...and even though this may seem frivolous to some, I can assure you it isn't...it needs to be done, and it is going to take a lot of work to make it happen, but I thank God for giving us the strength and the means to go ahead and get it done...even before the holidays! That was an added bonus!  I had to pack away my extra fall decorations to make room for the other things, but that doesn't mean we are packing away our gratitude and thankfulness!
We give thanks to God for all blessings that He so kindly provides.
Amen.
Hopefully the next time I write I can show you pictures of the finished product. Until then, I'll be busy packing and unpacking...and my computer will have to be disconnected at some point as well!  Have a blessed and wonderful week everyone!!!

    1. Thank you, Brenda. I know we will love it when done. It is a lot of work right now getting everything ready, and I am pretty tired tonight, but I know it's for a good cause. Just taking a little break here to say hello and goodnight!

  2. Oh my! It is these big projects creating lots of work that keep me stuck in mental instability. 😁 For a while, it seemed as if my home would receive similar treatment, but it fell through. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

It will be worth all your efforts. Of that I am sure. Pace yourselves. Many blessings as you go through the process.

    1. Trust me, I've felt a bit unstable lately with all the mess around me. The house really needs cleaning thoroughly and this is a good start, but it is a LOT of work. Oh, the book I ordered about Annie Wilton arrived. I'm trying to take little breaks to read it, but right now I don't have much time. It looks really good, however, and I think I am going to love it. Good night for now.

  3. Take care with all of the moving things around. It's a tough job, but it will be so worth it to get that new flooring in!

    1. Thankfully the guys doing the installation will move the furniture, but we have to get everything off of it first, and that is a big job. I'm pooped and ready for bed now. Yes, it will be worth it when complete. I am looking forward to that for sure! Thank you!!

  4. We have real wood floors that I love - even in the kitchen. I have 6 year old carpet in our living room and our bedroom. I know what a big expense that was.

Think of it this way, you’re doing a deep clean in house just before the holidays. I can’t wait to see the finished product.

    1. Yes, this is a deep clean project for sure, and it needed it. All this stuff needed to be cleaned, dusted, etc., so hopefully everything will look a lot better when it is all done. I am taking a little break tonight from packing, but am about ready to crash...so good night.

  5. How I love the way you chat! But I want to know, how did our carpeting get in your pictures? Yep, they bear a striking resemblance except ours may be far dirtier. Never mind the cost, I've been vacillating for more than a year what home improvement project needs attending first.
You're right -- God's timing is always perfect. I need to take my hands off His steering wheel.

    1. LOL. I am sorry if this carpet reminds you of yours...this carpet is plenty dirty, trust me. Living in Florida with all the sand and dirt and acorns stuck in our shoes...well, let's just say the carpet needs to go. And our shoes need to stay at the door when we come in! Yes, God's timing is right and when we let Him take control, everything works out. I like to do things in my time, but He has a way of leading me that is always best. I'm taking a little break tonight from the packing. About ready for bed now. Good night.

  6. When I do my floors, my kids will put it in for me. My daughter did her old house a few years back and now in her new home she did her kitchen and office rooms by herself. It isn't hard to install at all and even I can help. I know it will be lovely when you are finished and can't wait to see how nice it looks. Will Lily Grace be overseeing the job while you are holed up in the bedroom?

    1. I commented on your post a few minutes ago. Yes, Lily Grace is overseeing everything and wants to know what is going on. I had to put her other dolly friends away today so they won't get knocked over and broken in all the activity, so she is a bit lonely without them. But she's a big helper. LOL. I am taking a break tonight from packing. This old gal ain't what she used to be and my body is telling me all about it. Thank you for visiting. I'll talk to you later when all is done...

  7. Oh my! It looks much like the way our house has looked recently. I don't envy you the task, but moving wouldn't be much harder would it? It's going to be wonderful when it's all done. Take care.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

    1. I know you are quite experienced with packing and unpacking lately. It's a job for sure. But it's also giving me a chance to do some much needed cleaning as I go. However, I am tired tonight and am taking a break. Tomorrow is another day. Yes, it will be wonderful when done. Praying I survive! LOL>

  8. What an overwhelming project, Pamela, but God will give you the strength to get it all done. We got rid of all carpet in the upstairs bedrooms a while back, and I've never been happier. Yes, the house is so much easier to keep clean when it's just hardwood floors.
Ironically, I've just resumed blogging today, so I'm glad to know why you might not be able to comment with all that's going on. May God bless this endeavor!

  9. Oh my! That is such a huge project! We have some wrinkles but they are not bothering us so I hope we don't ever have to deal with them. We have such BIG bookcases and furniture....I don't even want to think about it. But I know you'll be so happy to have it done! It will be GREAT!!! Hugs, Diane

    1. Our wrinkles are growing more and more it seems and it is just so unsightly. Plus it is just not good carpet to begin with, so out it must go! This is a big job and I am very tired tonight from packing all day. Still have a ways to go, but I have to pace myself as I am older than the last time I packed this stuff up. LOL. Thank you for your kind words.

  10. Oh my! This is akin to producing a Broadway production! Not that I've ever done that but it will certainly take a lot of work and coordination. But so worth it in the end. I understand if you don't peek out from under all that for a few days. Have a busy but blessed weekend.

    1. It is a big production. I haven't slept much the past few nights, thinking about what needs to be done and where to put everything out of the way...Thankfully the men doing the floor will move the furniture around, but we have to get all the stuff off of it first, which in our house is a huge job. Maybe if we sang and danced our way through it could make a real Broadway production! LOL. Taking a break right now because I'm pooped. Good night.

    1. THank you so much for visiting! I just went over and visited your blog and see that you live on a farm in PA! I was born on a farm in PA many moons ago, but left there when I was almost six, so I don't have a lot of "farm experience". Oh, the Hoosier Cabinet belonged to my hubby's grandmother. I refinished it, which was a big job, but I was much younger then. LOL It had six layers of paint on it! And yes, God IS good...all the time, God is good!! Amen. I see on your profile that you like Grace Livingston Hill books. I used to have a collection of them but donated them to a church library years ago. Now I wish I could go back and read them again. They were so good. Have a blessed day, and do come visit again sometime.

  12. Hello. You will really love the new flooring. It is overwhelming to move everything, but you will feel that it is well worth it, I know. The pictures of your bookshelves remind me of our home - we have lots of bookcases and books. I hope everything with the flooring project goes well. I will look forward to pictures when all is finished. See you again soon!

    1. Thank you, Deb. I know we will love it when it is done, but right now I'm tired of packing! Taking a little break while I can. Yes, we have lots of books and bookcases. We keep trying to give away books, but somehow manage to still have too many. LOL. I really need to let go of a few more. Yes, I will definitely post the "after" pictures when the job is done...but I may need to take a vacation first. LOL.

  14. Pam: You are one brave lady. Our kitchen project is still "on hold". The people we asked to 'clean up' the mess the first person left us with are ill. The man has issues partly due to cancer treatments he received several years ago. His wife has vertigo and can't get into a specialist until the end of next month at the earliest. Our kitchen flooring will have to wait until after the holidays. Peace and blessings to you and yours.

  15. There’s no denying that this is a big project, Pam, just from seeing the photos and reading about this project. As others have commented, the end result will be worth the effort and flooring will be easier to keep tidy than carpeting. There is wall to wall carpeting in the apt here and thankfully is seems sturdy enough and we can request a yearly cleaning (no charge) which we always do. Take all the time you need to get all of your things moved and put back in place as blogging can take a back seat to all of that.

    1. While I can still get to my computer I will take little breaks now and then to relax and visit with friends. that helps keep me sane! LOL. Yes, it IS a bigger project than I allowed myself to think about beforehand or I wouldn't have done it, but it will be worth it all when it is done. How nice that you can get a yearly cleaning at no charge for your carpet! That's a real benefit! Plus, you don't live on the ground floor where you can track in a lot of sand and dirt. Here in Florida it is very difficult to keep from tracking in dirt. We try to drop the shoes at the door, but that isn't always practical and it's a constant battle to keep the floors clean. But at least without the carpet I will be able to see the dirt and sweep it up before it gets settled in. LOL. I'll be back when this is over to show the after pics. Have a good week.

  17. Thank you for the fits of giggles...we have been living with boxes galore for a week now since moving in and as you know, we have wood/ laminate flooring throughout. With that said, I am looking forward to seeing your new flooring soon. OH, and I found that your house was very lovely already--smiles.

    1. Were you in our house? I'm thinking not, but I guess you've seen the pictures online...but thank you for the kind words. Yes, I am thinking about you and all your boxes galore! I hope by now they are getting trimmed down and you are beginning to feel a little more "at home". We are looking forward to seeing you next weekend. That will be a blessing after our week of work! The house may still be a BIG mess, however, next Saturday, as I'm not sure what day they will finish and then we have to put it all back together again! So be prepared! LOL.

  18. Our carpet is starting to wrinkle up too. We could have it stretched, but I think we need new carpet or hardwood flooring. It needs to be changed anyway. It will be so nice when you get it changed out. I know it is a lot of work though. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend!

  19. I've lived in "wrinkled carpet" places. Not good for a husband with mobolity issues, but when you lack means for better, you learn to live with it. There's carpet in our current apartment, but only in the tiny livingroom and bedroom... and it's the kind that apartment builders install for landlords of rental places... it has NO padding of any sort. And it's ugly. But as they say, beggars can't be choosers. We make do. What few breakables I own are always a pain to pack unpack pack unpack, and of course, there always seems to be at least one thing broken during the moves. Bleah. I will pray for all your goodies that they remain in excellent condition!! Blessings, my friend!

  21. Yay! I'm excited for you that you are getting new flooring, but ugh...moving all those other things. It was bad enough this past week when we moved furniture in and out. 24. I'm tired thinking of all the work! But it is true that God's timing is best and everything seems to have worked out for that. I know what you mean about the carpet issue being bad for your mental and physical health. I have that feeling about my 'stuff'. I'm glad God took care of that issue for you.

  25. Like Joyful said, your dilemma made me tired too! It's such a chore to replace flooring! My sister who works in real estate told me when we moved into our current home, (which was to be temporary), to replace the flooring. She said it's one expense you will never regret. I'm glad we listened to her. We did carpet and laminate. We have now been in the home going on 8 years and the carpet and flooring are still in excellent condition as we did an upgrade on the padding. I'm so happy for you to get the flooring done, your home will feel like new again!
