Simplify My Abundance

This may be in deep contrast to my "One Word" for 2019, which is "Abundance", but in my search for abundant living, I am finding that I need to "simplify" my life first.  I'm also thinking that I should have made "simplify" my "One Word", and maybe it would have spurred me on to an abundance of simplicity...or simplifying my abundance...well...whatever or whichever, I need to get moving in this direction.

(one of my new t-shirts I got for Christmas)

As many of you know, we are trying to sell our house with the intention of "downsizing" to a smaller home.  So far we still have no takers for this big old house. And I've been rather lazy about getting started on the downsizing process.

But spring is springing abundantly all around us, and it seems as though with that new vitality of spring, it is time for me to begin some serious spring housecleaning.

(and try not to be distracted by the sweet little white wildflowers growing like a carpet in our yard)

Or by the abundance of azaleas that are really opening up and showing their pretty faces to the sunlight in the Secret Garden (above), and the Memorial Garden (below)

My hubby actually got the cleaning bug last week and reorganized and cleaned out his side of the closet. I was so impressed...

that I had to get busy and start reorganizing and simplifying the abundance of too many things in my side of the closet.  We were both happy to take bags of clothes to the church's thrift store, as well as take bags of old t-shirts that make great rags for painting/woodworking to our woodworking son and daughter in law for their business.

Next...well, I kept smelling an unpleasant musty odor coming from under the kitchen sink.  Usually I would just hurry up and get what I needed or put back what I used and shut the door really quick.
But it was getting worse and worse, and I knew I had to address the problem if I ever want to sell this house...

So I got down on my fanny and sat on the floor and started pulling everything out from under the sink cabinets, and discovered that the floor of the cabinets under the sink was quite wet, and it was spreading to the cabinet next to the sink as well, and it was quite a wet and stinky mess under there.

So everything is out on the kitchen floor, and I cleaned the cabinet floors and put a pan under the sink to see if we can catch the leak and figure out where it is coming from.  It wasn't real obvious, but I think it is coming from the hot water faucet...so we will check again in the morning and then determine if it is something we  can fix on our own or if we need to call someone.   I'm hoping we can do it, but then again...sometimes it is simpler in the long run to call a professional...can I get a witness on that???

Yes, it is time to simplify the abundance of things and clean and organize and refresh this old house.
It may be time to simplify the abundance of things in my mind and heart and clean and organize and refresh this old house that holds me together as well.

Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, or the beginning of Lent...the 40 days leading up to Easter.  My husband has been asked to lead the Ash Wednesday service next week, as our Pastor is still not well...(Thank you for your continued prayers for him and for my hubby as well, as he will also be preaching again this Sunday).  This will be a first time for my hubby to lead an Ash Wednesday service, as we did not officially observe Ash Wednesday as such in our previous churches.  So we've been doing some reading up on the order of service and significance thereof.  One of the key sets of verses that stand out to me goes along real well with what I am experiencing in my pursuit of simplifying and cleaning up the "abundance" of too much...

Psalm 51:7-12
7.  "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8.  Make me hear joy and gladness,
that the bones You have broken may rejoice.
9.  Hide Your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
10.  Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11.  Do not cast me away from Your Presence,
and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
12.  Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
and uphold me by Your generous Spirit."

This is also a wonderful song, written and sung by Keith Green:

Thank you also for your prayers for the United Methodist Church denomination this week.  God has indeed answered our prayers, but the denomination still faces some difficult days ahead, and there may possibly be a split at some point. But we believe that God is at work and we will keep praying for those who have been hurt through this process...that they will seek God's face and find grace and forgiveness and peace.

So what about you? Are you working on any spring cleaning projects yet? I know many of you are still dealing with old man winter.  I pray that you will soon experience the joy of springtime in your home and in your heart as well...

Have a simply abundantly blessed rest of your week!!!

  1. I love that song by Keith Green. It is a great prayer. Your flowers are so pretty. I have been working on 'spring cleaning' and organizing closets too! Have a wonderful day.

    1. I'm glad you love the song. Keith Green was especially our son Matthew's favorite Christian artist, so any song by him is a blessed reminder to me of our precious son, who is probably singing along with Keith in heaven today. Glad to know I am not alone in cleaning closets. That makes me feel better. LOL. Blessings.

  2. Ohhhhhh, a water leak. I hope the fix is easy and painless (or at the least, not expensive). That is one problem a homeowner simply cannot ignore, much as we wish we could!

Thank you for the flora and fauna photos -- I especially like it when you can identify the flowers for us since much of what grows here in Florida would never survive in Colorado. I have much to learn!

    Love Keith Green's music.

    1. Plumber will be here in the morning. Hopefully it is a simple fix, but we have other "issues" we need him to check as well if we are ever going to sell this house! I know you've been experiencing this yourself. It's always something! I'm glad you love K.G.'s music. He was our son Matthew's favorite Christian artist. I believe they are singing duets in heaven.

  3. Pam: When we have a suspected water leak, Hubby puts down newspapers to see where the leak is.
We are still dealing with winter and it's friends, snow and cold temperatures. I am still with a cold and have a doctor's appointment this afternoon to get this 'stuff' seen about.
The new Lenten traditions is to substitute something positive into our lives. I intend to clean out a closet and a free standing wardrobe of things I no longer need or wear. Plus, giving up something I have grown attached to.

    1. So sorry you have a cold. I hope the Dr. is able to help you feel better soon. I agree with your Lenten idea of bringing something positive into our lives rather than giving up, although I do need to give up quite a lot, and this is a good time to get started. It's not going to be easy, but God will help. Thank you for your support this past week re: UMC. Praise God for a good result, and still praying for all those who are affected and hurting.

  4. "...sometimes it is simpler in the long run to call a professional...can I get a witness on that???"

Amen from the backrow! Ha ha... YES to this. The guy comes, fixes things, tears things out, gets his hands dirty, and all you have to do is write numbers on a little rectangle of paper and hand it to him. Amen!

What will you do with your memorial garden when you move?

    1. Ha ha. The plumber arrives tomorrow morning. Right before I have company for lunch. I've decided we are going out to lunch instead. The Memorial Garden will be taken with us for the most part...can't take the flowers or the arbor, but the fountain and sign, etc., and we will create a new place wherever we go. It's a special spot for us to be reminded of our sweet son everytime we look at it, not that I really need a reminder...but it softens the blow and the memories are sweeter that way. Thank you for asking.

  5. Yes, I am still working on my closet in the guest room (over-flow stuff). Slow but sure! I agree that it is good to call a professional with it is a plumbing or electrical problem. Best to have it done right the first time! (Experience speaking!) Good luck!

    1. Plumber will be here in the morning, right before we have company for lunch. I've decided we are taking them out to lunch. Good for me!! The cleaning of closets will be a long slow process here...unless we sell the house, and then it will be a fast hurry up and get it out of here process...Not sure which I like best. I do work better under pressure, however....

  6. We will have our fair share of cleaning and purging in the weeks to come in order to get Mimi's house ready to sell. I'm not looking forward to it whatsoever, but it must be done. Lent is the season for spiritual cleansing, though, and getting rid of the clutter in our hearts.
And I vote for getting professional help with the lead, Pam.
    Blessings!

    1. Oh I know what that is like...never easy. Don't know how sentimental your family is, but do make sure that everyone gets something special to remember her by. Sometimes we think when we are in a hurry to get a job done that we don't "need" this or that, but after things calm down you may find that you wish you'd kept this or that afterall...so be sure before you get rid of everything. Yes, we have a plumber coming tomorrow morning...Thank you!

  7. It is amazing to me, Pam, that it really is MORE when we simplify. I have found that so true as I've been working on spring cleaning...in the pantry, mudroom, bathroom, and kitchen. Next is our bedroom. I've purged a good deal of material things and the more I've worked on this the more calm and peaceful those areas of our home are...not to mention how much more "free" I feel in my own being.

    1. I am happy for you to be able to do that. My problem is that so much of what we have belonged to family members who are departed from this earth. I seem to be the heirloom keeper. No one else really wants them...but yet if I try to let them go, there is some reluctance...so I have to be careful about that. I would love to start over from scratch...but then again, I love the character and memories...so I pray God will help me find a happy medium. Thank you for your prayers and thoughts on this.

  8. Pam, thank you for sharing your heart here. There really is an abundance in simplicity. An old Shaker (yes, Shaker!) song suddenly sprang to mind, "Tis a gift to be simple, tis a gift...". I have a very long way to go in simplifying things in my life. Less really is MORE.

Simplicity gives us margin--margin--the "white space" in writing, in art work that allows us to see what the creator wants us to see. Simplifying our lives gives us room for spiritual white space which allows God to work in and through us.

Ash Wednesday is an interesting time to consider life and God's place in your life. Joel 2 is a powerful Scripture for this time too.

    Blessings!

    1. I love that old Shaker Hymn...yes I know it.I like what you said about "simplicity gives us margin...the white space in writing, etc. ..." that is beautiful. You need to write that in a book or something and keep that. Very good thought. I may have to save it. Joel 2, etc. , yes, we have that scripture reference on our list as well. This will be a very meaningful service for us. Prayers appreciated. Thank you for your prayer support this past week. It's been difficult for all those in the UMC, but God is in control and He will bless us for being faithful to His Word. Praying for those who are hurt that they will turn to the TRUE and Living God for direction and comfort.
