Sermon Notes and a Prayer Request

Our beautiful little white church

Today our pastor preached a wonderful message from the book of Mark, chapter 6:30-44, about the feeding of the five thousand with a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish.  I will get into the "meat" of that in a minute, but first I want to request prayer for our pastor.  He was not feeling quite up to par all morning, but persevered to the end of the sermon, and then at the time of the benediction he started to sway, and collapsed down safely to the pew in front of him with the help of some quick thinking people.  He remained conscious, but very weak and faint.  9-11 was called, and he is now at the hospital having some tests run.  Please keep him in your prayers.  His name is "A.C."...which stands for something wonderful I am certain...not sure exactly what, so we just call him A.C.  Only a couple of weeks ago our pastor announced his plans to retire in June, so we were already feeling the sadness of seeing him leave our little church after seventeen years of ministry. Now we pray that he will be able to finish out his remaining months with us before his retirement commences, and that he will have a blessed and healthy retirement.  I know he and his wife (and our congregation) would appreciate everyone's prayers. So thank you!

Here are a few pictures of our little church. Most of these you may have already seen.  Our little flock is a very conservative, Bible believing, Spirit-filled and happy group of people.  I would ask you to pray for our church not only as our Pastor is recuperating from whatever illness this may be, but also as we begin the process of selecting a new pastor to lead our flock when he retires.  This will not be an easy transition for us since our pastor is dearly beloved and has been here, as I said, for about 17 years.

Also, please pray for the denomination of the United Methodist Church at large, as next week they will be voting on some very serious issues that plague many churches today. It seems as though Satan is trying to destroy God's church in any way that he can in these last days...causing division and strife and sorrow for many.   Pray for a strong and mighty movement of God's Holy Spirit in the hearts of the leaders of our denomination, pointing them to turn to God's Word for clear direction and to seek biblical, scriptural responses to those who would seek to have their own way regardless of the truth of God's Word. May God's Holy Spirit prevail, and may God's people stand strong in their faith in Jesus Christ and the truth of His Gospel.  Many of us are praying and watching and waiting to see what is going to be decided, and the results of that decision may bring about big changes for many of our churches.  And that will lead to each of us making personal decisions regarding the direction of our local churches.  May Jesus Christ be glorified and honored and exalted, and may His Church stand strong.

The Fellowship Hall...and the building on the far right is a little house that holds our church's Thrift Store Ministry, which supports several ministries in the church, including a housing ministry for recently released prisoners who need a place to live.

This little building  (above) used to be the parsonage many years ago, but now is used for our ladies' quilting ministry. They make beautiful lap quilts for use at the Ronald McDonald House, Hospice, and VA hospital.  (btw...the camellias are gorgeous all around the church right now!)

This is our Sunday School and office building, including a lovely prayer chapel.

Lovely camellias

The windows inside the sanctuary

Those same windows from outside.

Now, to the sermon notes. First of all...the Church is not really about the building at all...it is about the people inside the building...and also those same people inside taking the Gospel outside that building to the world.  That is essentially what our sermon was about today...here are the notes as best I can tell you:

  • The compassion that Jesus was showing to the multitudes of people who were following Him is an example of something He wanted us and His disciples to learn...
  • Look at Mark 6:30-44, and then especially at verses 34-36:
"34.  And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd.  So He began to teach them many things.
35.  When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, 'This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late.
36.  Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat."

But look at what Jesus told the disciples in verse 37:

"You give them something to eat."
Of course, the disciples were rather surprised at this idea...they could only think of the physical means of feeding all those people, when all they had was a few loaves of bread and few fish...they really didn't see how they could feed so many with so little...

But Jesus showed them how...and He is showing us how today...we are to be the church to the LOST...those who have not heard the gospel...those on the outside of the church walls who are waiting to hear the gospel. It's not about US, who already are the saved...but about those who are perishing without Christ.  We've already been "found"... but the Church isn't supposed to be just for the "found" ones, but for the "LOST and FOUND".  We are to take the Gospel outside the walls and feed the hungry...not just those who are physically hungry, but those who are hungry for the truth...hungry for the love of Christ to touch their lives.

We may be like the disciples who look at the multitude and say, it is too great a task for us to feed them...send them somewhere else.  We don't have the money or resources to take care of such needy people.  But when we listen to the call on our lives from Christ...when we answer that call and open ourselves to the Lord God Almighty...He will make a way..

Even though Jesus Himself was tired and hungry (see Mark 6:31), He still was moved with compassion on the multitudes (vs. 34), "because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things."

Have we ever been so tired or busy that we missed an opportunity to introduce someone to Christ?
When we decide to show the love of Jesus, we will never want to send them away...we'll never say we don't have enough.

  • Jesus took something, blessed it, and made it more...
  • We say to ourselves that we don't have enough time, desire, money, energy...
  • Rather than trust in Jesus we drown under our own fear of failure...we want to send them away to someplace else...
  • Jesus has called to each one of us in an appointed place of worship...to go out and reach people...
  • That's not the preacher's job...that's OUR job.  ("You give them something to eat!")
  • God wants to open our hearts to people who are hurting
  • We need to pray and ask Jesus..."Where do I go, how do I get there?"
  • He will lead us as we follow Him.
Our closing hymn was "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus"

Have YOU decided to follow Jesus?  No turning back, no turning back....

Thank you for your prayers for our pastor and our church.  May Jesus Christ be praised.

Sermon Notes: FUMC, Interlachen, FL, Pastor A.C. Myers, 2/17/2019

Please Note : I want to repeat this disclaimer here...the notes, outline, and content included here are based upon my own personal understanding of the message that was being given. I am not attempting to completely quote or reproduce this message or any other message I've shared previously. Just as each person reading these notes may glean insights and thoughts that seem to directly apply to one's own situation and interpretation, my own delivery of these messages is skewed by my hearing and translation of what is being said. Some may read my notes here and wonder if they were hearing the same message as I...and I say, God speaks to each of us as He wills...there are things He is trying to get across to each individual that may be entirely different than what the person sitting next to you in the pew is needing to hear... That is how the Holy Spirit works! He knows what we need to hear and how to apply it to our hearts. So it is with that understanding that I present these sermon notes to you.

  1. Your pretty church reminds me of the Methodist church of my childhood, a classic white wood building with a steeple. My church now has red camellias like the ones in your photo. I am praying your dear pastor recovers fully.

When I got saved I was a very modern person, liberal in my thinking...unholy. The Lord changed my heart. He showed me the truth. I went looking for a church that taught what the Holy Spirit had shown me to be true. When people seek the truth they will find the right church. If there is one not teaching it, they will wonder why no one comes to them. Maybe they'll turn back.

    Topic change...

If I had been there during the loaves and fishes miracle I think I would have been annoyed. Is that a funny thing to say? Ha ha. And it was a great miracle. Great! Now, what is happening that I would miss today...What opportunities would I miss? This is important to think about.

    1. I understand what you mean...sometimes I think we are missing many "miracles" in the making, because we are not seeing with "holy eyes". We are seeing with only our physical eyes and may be missing the beauty of what God is truly doing in our midst. We think of the immediate, physical needs, (esp. if we are hungry), and we try to satisfy those needs in the only way we know how. But Jesus wants to show us a better way, if we will just open our spiritual eyes. Thank you for your comments. I always love to hear what you are going to say. I'm never disappointed!

  5. Pam indeed I will be in prayer for your pastor's health and also for his wife. Please keep us posted on how things are going for/with him. And I also will be praying for the United Methodist church at large. I totally agree with you that Satan is trying his best to destroy the church any way he can...and it isn't just with the Methodists either. I have been amazed at some of the things I've been reading and hearing about/from men who have stood for righteousness that just make me know all the more that we truly are living in the last days. xo

    1. Yes, I agree with your thoughts re: The last days. We are living in possibly very exciting times if that is the case...but all the more reason to be praying diligently for all those who are still lost and don't seem to care. Yes, our churches are being attacked on all sides, not just mainstream denominations, but even more conservative evangelical churches. Satan knows his time is running out and he's trying every thing he can to hurt the cause of Christ. But we KNOW WHO wins!!! Praise God we are on the winning team, if we belong to Jesus!! Thank you for your prayers.

  6. Pam: I will pray for your pastor's health. Our pastor also announced his retirement fro the UMC this spring. After a conversation with the facilitator of my Sunday school class this morning, the thought came to me that we are in God's waiting room. After reading your requests, I realize the whole UMC, especially the traditionalists, are ALL in God's waiting room. Prayers, Peace and blessings.

    1. We must all unite in prayer for our churches...not just the UMC...there are many other denominations in very similar distress...Satan is a liar and is trying his best to destroy the church, but we know that Jesus Christ is the VICTOR. Praying for all those who don't know Him as Savior and Lord and who think they can have things their way. Much prayer is needed for the church in these last days.

  7. Praying for A.C., his family, the congregation, and for the special counsel coming up. Like you, Pamela, I am anxious about the conference and what will come out of it. Afraid that instead of unity, there will be schism. Praying that God will oversee it all, and that those in attendance will do His will, all for His glory.
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Martha. Yes, there are many of us praying for this general conference, that Jesus Christ will be glorified and that God's Word will be honored and exalted. We know that God is in control and that Jesus Christ is the Victor no matter what the churches do. Praying now in agreement with you. Thank you.

  8. Pam, I'm praying for Pastor A.C. that he will recover fully very soon. Hoping it's just a bug or something and not anything more serious.

And I pray for Christians everywhere that we will remain strong for the Lord in every respect. We know from Scripture that in the last days, some will fall away, but may we and all those we know (which encompasses a LOT of people!!!) be among those who persevere in living by God's Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

    1. Amen, Barbara. We know that the church is being attacked on all sides in these last days, but the true believers in Jesus Christ will still be victorious no matter which way it goes. We just pray that the leaders in all church denominations will stand strong in these perilous times, and that there will be an outpouring of God's Holy Spirit in the hearts of men and women like never before. Thank you for your prayers.

  9. Oh dear Pam, I will pray for the Pastor that God has for your sweet church and have been praying for the church at large. I served on our Pastor's search team when we elected the pastor we have now and I can assure you that many, many, many, months, prayers, and tears went into the selection. Tears of exhaustion at times, tears with laughter and then tears of JOY! Will pray for the Methodist church as well Pam. So many sad things happening in our world with our churches today and not just the Methodist dear friend. SO SAD. When God's not in it, it will fall because I believe that God will not be embarrassed. I pray that your Pastor will get well soon and very soon. So many needs we have dear friend but Praise God that He and He alone can answer our needs. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

    1. Thank you, Cindy, for your prayers and uplifting words. (btw, Happy Birthday today!). Yes, Satan is on a rampage because he knows his time is growing short. May the true believers in Christ stand strong in their convictions and upon the Word of God. We know that Jesus Christ is the Victor in this battle, but we pray that God's Holy Spirit will be poured out on God's people in a mighty way in these perilous times. Thank you again for your prayers.

  10. Pam, your post is a timely one. As a member in a traditional and conservative UMC my heart is grieved over how the progressive-liberals are trying to win the day. I've been praying and will continue to pray for the UMC (my thoughts are let's get the pain over with and part ways) and the upcoming special General Conference. John and Charles Wesley would be turning over in their graves if they knew what is happening "with the people called Methodists".

I'll be praying for your pastor too.

By the way, your church grounds are beautiful!

    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Kim. I was thinking the exact same thought this morning about John and Charles Wesley. I also rather agree with your thoughts about "let's get the pain over with and part ways". I don't think the UMC will ever be truly united again, and perhaps God is showing us that it is time to begin anew and get back to the truth of God's Word. We will be praying in agreement during this time. Thank you for standing for the truth. May Jesus Christ be praised!

  11. Such a beautiful message given by your pastor, and I have just prayed for him, and believing that the Lord will heal his body, and help your church to find just the right leader to continue to lead your sweet body of believers into whatever God has in store for you. Change is always so tough, but it can bring good things. Much to pray about for sure! Such a beautiful work of love and giving your church has, I love the idea of a prayer chapel, and a quilting hall, wow! Such blessings to be a part of such a loving group of people. Will be in prayer about the upcoming changes in your denomination as well. So much at stake in these days we are living in, so much to pray about! I have started a ladies prayer meeting in my home, as the Lord has laid on my heart the great need for us to bind together in prayer, pleading and praying for our families, our churches, our communities, our nation, and this world we live in. Even so come quickly Lord Jesus! Appreciate you and your precious love and devotion to the Lord! Blessings across the miles :)

  12. I hope your pastor regains his health quickly. Your church building is very sweet. Those little white buildings are very old fashioned and purely American in style.
I hope your church can find the true path.

  13. Hi, Pam! Just wanted to stop by and say hi. Your little church is absolutely beautiful. This decision being made by the UMC is a sad thing to have to even be voted on. Prayers for your church family. If anyone should decide to take over FFF let me know and I'll do a quick post sharing the blog link. 💜
