A Few of My Favorite Things
Welcome back to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 and if it's your first time its great that you are here and helping make it fun for everyone.
1. Do you have a favorite family recipe? Would you share it?
It's not necessarily a favorite "family" recipe, but it is a favorite of my hubby's and mine. The kids never cared about it much, but we enjoy it and often eat this for breakfast when we have a nice fresh loaf. Banana Nut Bread! I can share this right now because I just baked this today! Whenever we buy a large bunch of bananas you can usually be certain that there will be some banana nut bread happening in a few days. I can only stand to eat bananas when they are still just barely green. When they start developing "freckles" on the peel, I can no longer tolerate them. Hubby might eat them for another day or so on his cereal, but if I can smell them, they're ready to become banana nut bread!
Normally I only have enough bananas for one loaf of bread, (three bananas), so I only do half of this recipe. Also, when I mix up the ingredients, I usually mix all the wet ingredients together first and then add the flour, salt, baking soda and nuts. Mix the shortening and sugar first, then add the eggs and beat them in good, and then add the bananas and continue to beat them well. Once the mixture is fairly smooth, then add the dry ingredients. This recipe is always very moist and delicious. I also always test it with a toothpick once it has baked for about 50 minutes. Often times it needs to bake for 55 minutes. I store it in the refrigerator once it has cooled. We slice pieces and hubby likes his with butter and I like mine with cream cheese. Makes a good quick breakfast with a cup of tea or coffee.
2. Do you have a favorite book? How about a movie? TV program?
Well, the Bible is my favorite book...it is more than a book...it is the only guide for my life. As far as other books go, it would be difficult for me to narrow it down to one book. I really don't know where to begin. I have some favorite old authors from way back and I have collections of their books...most of which I'm sure you've probably never heard of, they are so old.
Here are some of my favorites:
This is a series of books written by Mary J. Holmes, mostly back in the late 1800's.
I love these old fashioned romance and adventure novels...they are always written from a wholesome perspective with strong Christian values, but are full of mystery and intrigue.
Then there's a series of books written by George Barr McCutcheon that I love as well...most of them are in the "Graustark" Series, which again are high adventure, romance and mystery...and again written around the turn of the century.
This is one of the books:
And here's another book I love, written by Arthur Hornblow.
I particularly love this one because it is one of three books given to me by my maternal grandfather following the death of my grandmother. They were books that belonged to her that she loved, and so I love them. This is just one of them:
This was such a great story about a shipwreck, and this high society young woman and a young man from down in the fire stokers of the engine of the ship are both survivors and land on a deserted island. He takes care of her but doesn't feel worthy of her, and she is so helpless...they fall in love but then are finally rescued and she has to go back to her family and he knows he can't go with her...he's not worthy of her and her family would never accept him...but later it turns out that he is actually a son of a very wealthy family who had gone astray and that is why he was where he was on that ship...and long story short, it turns out they end up living happily ever after after all...but it sure took a long time for all of that to happen! It's a great story, and I love that it is one my grandmother loved and I think of her when I read it...
So you can see why I love these old books...and sadly you will not find them in any library today I'm sure. That's why I hang on to them so they aren't lost forever. Many of them are so old they are literally falling apart, but I keep taping the covers and trying to hold them together. Someday I'm sure they'll get thrown away, but it's too bad. The stories are all so good.
As far as movies go, I've told you before my favorite movie is "The Bishop's Wife", with Loretta Young and Cary Grant and David Niven. If you haven't seen that version of it, you need to watch it. It's a classic.
TV programs...Not much too good on Tv anymore, but I do love Maine Cabin Masters and Hometown., and I watch them each week. I am not the one in control of the tv remote at our house, so I really don't care that much about watching tv.
3. What is your favorite snack? Favorite sandwich?
Snacks? Hmmm, Does a peanut butter sandwich count? Or how about yogurt and fresh fruit and granola? Those are my go to snacks nowadays. Favorite sandwich besides peanut butter is probably ham and swiss on pumpernickle bread, lightly toasted until the cheese melts. I like mustard on it and a little bit of mayonnaise. I also love good chicken salad, whether in a sandwich or without bread, either way...or on a croissant...now that's good!
4. What is your favorite color for a home exterior...a car...a room ?
Favorite color for a home exterior? I guess I like what we currently have okay, a light taupe with bright blue shutters and door. But I like lots of other colors too.
A car? A deep midnight blue would be pretty, or a deep burgundy/maroon. Our current vehicle is a dark charcoal grey. We took what we could afford. Color wasn't really that important. A deal is a deal.
A room? I tend to like more neutral colors than bold. Something calming and that goes with a lot of different colors or styles of furniture. Our current walls in our house are a light buttery very light tannish color. It suits me fine. I wouldn't mind having a light pine cabin style accent wall. I love the warm feeling of a cabin, but not all walls, which can be too much wood.
Random thought:
After looking at that picture of our front porch above with the bright blue shutters and door, I realized that the blue is about the same color as this bluebird! And the birdhouse is close to the same color as our house! I guess you could say I like bluebird blue and bluebird house colors for my house! LOL.
And with that I will close this post. Tuesday is almost over and I'm just getting it done.
But it was a busy day...spent the morning at Dixie Cottage and the evening at choir practice.
Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent!
Do you practice Lent? What does it mean to you? Do you "give up something for Lent", or do you try to do something meaningful to observe the preparation for the Easter season?
I try to do the latter...as I "listen" to God's Word and seek His direction for my life, I pray that He will guide me to live more fully in His presence during this special time of preparation for the remembrance of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection.
My prayer is that the miracle of Christ's sacrifice for our sins and resurrection from the dead will bring me a new and refreshing hope in my walk with Him during these next 40 days.
Jesus said in John 8:12
“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness,
but have the light of life.”
May the Light of Life that comes only through Jesus guide me in this part of my life's journey.
Amen.
Yes, I do lent because it was done by the church fathers including Polycarp the disciple of John who argued about when to stop the fast of lent.
ReplyDeleteYour bluebird blue is very nice on the house! Isn't it cool how we seem to love bringing nature into our homes? I hope you get your pine cabin wall. What a nice idea that would be.
Thank you, Annie. I keep wanting to make our house more "cabinesque", as I call it. It's always been my dream to have a cabin by a pond or lake. I have the pond, and I think this is as close to having a cabin I will ever get, so why not create the space the way I want it to be? Well, it all takes money and know-how. I may have the know how, but no money. So we will be content with what we have and be thankful. God is good.
DeleteI think the colors of your house are very pretty and so is the bluebird.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cathy. It's funny I never noticed that before today! LOL.
DeleteWell that was interesting. We are very different, except for liking Maine Cabin Masters. ☺️ No, not that different...I like your house colors and the bluebird. I can't stand a banana that is still green...ewww. My daughter is picking up her new vehicle today. The color is pretty iffy, but a deal is a deal as you say.
ReplyDeleteLoved seeing the old books with authors I have never heard of. You have a real treasure trove there!
What am I leaving out? Oh...Lent. I respect those who feel they must "do something" to honor the season. I am from the camp of "Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe." There's nothing that I can do in terms of giving up things that changes that. PTL!
I totally agree with you regarding "Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe", etc. That's why I don't feel the need to 'give up something for Lent", but I do appreciate setting aside this period of time preceding Easter to focus on just what Christ's great sacrifice for my sins and His resurrection from the dead really means...and why it makes a difference in my life. yes, I should do that year round all the time, but having this time to focus on it more intently is helpful to me to get recentered in my faith and purpose in life...and a time of recommitment to Christ. To quote another favorite old hymn: "All to Jesus, I surrender, all to Him I freely give..." I think we actually agree on everything except the best time to eat a banana! LOL.
DeleteMy heart ... I love that old recipe card. We love banana nut bread; not sure why I only make it during the holidays. And those books! My grandmother was a big fan of Grace Livingston Hill. As a little girl when I'd visit their farm in Minnesota, I'd make a beeline for one of her books. I'm touched how your grandfather passed on your g'mas favorite books and the inscription ... how her presence lives on when you hold that one in your hands. Gosh, I'm growing a lump in my throat. Anyway! No, I've never seen The Bishop's Wife, but will put it on the (ever-growing) list. Most of the time I could care less about television. Your front porch looks so bright and welcoming. We need some serious touch-ups done, but like the movie -- it's going on The List!
ReplyDeleteOh, Grace Livingston Hill! I once had a whole collection of her books...my mother was also a fan and helped collect them for me. But eventually during one of our many moves I decided to donate them to our church library so other women and young girls could read them. The last time I visited that particular church I looked in their library and there were none of them to be seen. I was very disappointed...all they had were theology books, which of course are important, but it's also important to foster reading good Christian life stories, whether they be fiction or nonfiction. From now on I donate my books to the public library where people who really NEED them will see them! Oh, if you could see my front porch now you would say I need some serious touch ups done too. That picture was taken right after we moved here and had restored the decking. It doesn't look that nice now. Needs a serious cleaning and probably we will paint the deck and railing instead of putting whatever we put on it last time that didn't last long. It was supposed to preserve the wood, etc., but you'd never know it now. That plus zillions of oak leaves and acorns keep falling on it and it is constant upkeep. Yep, I only let you see what I want you to see in pictures! The ugly truth is sometimes kept under wraps. LOL.
DeletePeanut Butter sandwiches are common here, or even a big spoonful of just peanut butter will do.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Lent season, it's crept up on me this year. Thanks for the reminder.
Oh, I love that you are a peanut butter sandwich fan! One more thing we have in common!!
DeleteLent...no, sadly, I do not give up anything. I was thinking coffee---but I had to fast, and it was a total of 15 hrs and I was without coffee and honestly, I can't do it, grin. But giving up something is on my mind. ANYWAYS, I love old books and your books are plum lovely. Wishing you a beautiful Wednesday. smiles
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to hear from you mid-week!! That's a treat we don't get very often anymore. I hope everything is okay? Were you fasting for a reason? Lab work maybe? Take care my friend, and have a beautiful day. It's a warm and windy one here!
DeleteEnjoyed reading this post.
ReplyDeleteThe banana bread recipe immediately caught my attention. I'm allergic to most nuts, but you can wake me up for bananas. The dietician made my diet around a banana for breakfast. LOL! Maybe I'll try your recipe, without the nuts.
Old books are so special. I'm from a family of bookprinters and binders, so my heart skipped a few beats with the tape! You can repair with linnen and a special kind of glue which doesn't harm the paper. That way the books will last even longer.
The birdblue is fabulous!!
As I am not Catholic anymore. Lent is not something main in my life.
It's Losar right at this moment, Tibetan new year. Cleanliness is part of it. That means not only a clean house, but also a clean mind and a heart open for others. Something that is practiced all days of the year, eveny day of our lives.
One of the things I didn't like was the time limits on certain behaviours: peaceful around christmas, saving food and/or sweets during lent, and then overeating at easter.
There were so many outward behaviours, followed in detail, which didn't change the person into a better person.
I have the luxury of having hardly any money. So eating less is not an option, nor is overeating. I have made it my normal life to be busy for others.
In a discussion at school about Lent I said that fastig, being nice, following the rules of the religion is not about being a good person, it's just about yourself. To me religion was a way to create a better world. So fasting should be sharing, and we shouldn't do it because we had to, but because we wanted to. That was the second time I was told to leave the classroom and wait outside until the end of the lesson.
So no Lent for me, just life as it is.
Yes, certainly you can leave out the nuts in the recipe. It would still be nice and moist and a good way to use up overripe bananas. Oh, I wish you could come show me how to preserve these old books. But honestly, they are so old some of them are disintegrating. I have to be so careful when I open them that they don't just fall apart. The paper is so old and brittle and turning dark. Most of them are well over 100 years old. Re: Lent. I am not a Catholic. Never was. I don't "do Lent" because I am forced to. I wasn't even raised to observe it in a real way. But I like the discipline of refocusing my thoughts and attention to the real meaning of Easter and not allowing myself to get caught up in the world secular view of Easter. It's a time for me to kind of take stock of myself and my relationship to Christ, and remember how great a sacrifice He made for me so that I could have eternal life and be with Him forever in heaven. He loves us that much that He was willing to lay down His life for us because we could never be good enough or do enough to atone for our sins. It's not about "following the rules of religion" for me, it's about building a stronger relationship with Jesus, drawing closer to Him and giving thanks to Him for saving my soul...and also about sharing His love with others and when possible, introducing others to Him so that they may have the joy of salvation as well. And you are so right...fasting shouldn't be because we had to, but because we wanted to. It's a personal and private decision between us and God, and really no one else needs to know about it. If it is forced, it really loses the deeper meaning.
DeleteThank you so much for visiting and sharing your thoughts with me. I enjoy talking with you and getting to know you better. Have a blessed and beautiful day.
P. S. I don't "do" Lent...I do it all year, every single day.
DeleteBrenda, that is the "ideal" way to live, by all means, and what we should each be practicing. But sometimes we get caught up in life and living and don't take time to focus on a time of reflection and renewal in our relationship with God. This is a good time to take the time to examine our hearts and lives and see if there is any room for improvement spiritually speaking. Perhaps a revival of sorts may break out even in our own hearts and homes! Certainly can't do any harm!
DeleteYes, I do observe Lent, Pamela, but like you, it really crept up on me. I suppose that's because we just got back from a trip to St. Simon's, and I was diagnosed with Covid on Tuesday. Not fun! Prayers for both Danny and me are so appreciated. :)
ReplyDeleteI do love me some homemade banana bread; I no longer make it because it isn't a favorite of Danny's.
Blessings!
I am so very sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with Covid. It has been going around here like wildfire again. I do hope you will be extra careful after your battle with pneumonia last year. I will be praying that it will be a very light case and that you will soon be well. I hope your time in St. Simon's was pleasant before you got sick. (((hugs))). I pray that Danny doesn't also get it. Stay in touch as you are able.
DeleteBanana Nut Bread is one of my favorites. Can't eat it anymore 'cause it's too many carbs. I do miss it though.
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't do lent. It's an ancient Catholic hangover and has no place in Christianity, like many other traditions of men.
I'm a fan of old books too. I've got shelves of them all over the house.
Blessings. xx
Thank you for visiting. I just came home from our church's Ash Wednesday service, and I can assure you it was very meaningful and completely based on God's Word. But we do not make it a mandate as it was done in the Roman Catholic church. It is a time of prayer, repentance and reflection on our relationship with Christ and His sacrifice for our sins. I find it very meaningful and appreciate that our Pastor presents this to us totally from the standpoint of repentance and renewal in our relationship to God. It's a beautiful way to prepare our hearts for the Easter season. But to each his own. It may not be for everyone, but for me it is very meaningful and totally Christ-centered in every way.
DeleteHi Pamela. I love this post. It was fun to learn more about you. I really like your front porch and the entrance to your home. That color of blue is my favorite. I love old books too, and how special that many of them came from your grandmother. They are priceless! Our church doesn't specifically celebrate Lent, but we do celebrate Easter - the most important event ever - the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Have a good week!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Deb. Oh, I am glad you like my Bluebird blue house! :) It's funny I'd never noticed that before I wrote this post! And yes, my old books are very special, even if they are dusty and musty and almost falling apart. I still like to re-read them every so often to justify still having them! LOL. I am sure someday my kids will probably throw them in the trash because they are in such sad condition, but I won't be around to care then. LOl. Yes, Easter IS the most important event ever. Because Jesus Christ LIVES, we too shall live!! "Lent" is just a way of preparing our hearts and and for me, a time of renewal and reflection of just how much Jesus loves us. I hope you have a great week as well!!
DeleteI enjoyed reading these answers. I had to chuckle at the mention of the car colors (we had a deep blue Gran Prix once) because just yesterday Prof and I were talking about car colors and decided we would like a camo colored Jeep.
ReplyDeleteDuring Lent each year four friends and I read a book together and since we are now scattered around the globe, we zoom every Friday to discuss it. This year it is Brother Lawrence's Practice of the Presence of God.
A camo colored Jeep sounds like FUN!! I would expect to see you in the woods and jungles with that one! LOL. I love the idea of four friends around the globe zooming in to discuss the Practice of the Presence of God! And yes, God is present even in our zoom calls..."Wherever two or three or more are gathered in My Name, there I am in the midst of them...." Matthew 18:20. Sounds wonderful. Enjoy and maybe share a book review with us someday.
DeleteBanana bread looks yummy. Glad you enjoy your books. I like PB in my yogurt.
ReplyDeleteI never would have thought of putting PB in my yogurt! Interesting!!I may have to try it sometime, but not sure it is something I would like...Maybe I'll try a little tiny bit first. LOL. Have a great weekend.
DeleteI love your blog. Love it. Love those books. Oh my goodness. I have given all of my classics, specials, and antique books to kids and grands. As to the banana nut bread...I made banana bread when kids were growing up...I can't handle the smell of bananas at all anymore. I don't bake anymore much...my family and I are such health nuts...lol...however, that is a healthy snack. Thank you for your lovely blog...about your and your family and your shop. How nice it is.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any kids who would appreciate my old books...no grands except one 23 yr. old grandson in Maine. I don't think any of them want any of this stuff, so when I die I am sure they will dispose of it "properly". Until then, I will enjoy these things as long as I am able and they last...or until I find someone else who would enjoy them like I do. I just hate to see them go into the trash, which is probably where they will end up because they are so old and fragile. As for bananas, I can't tolerate the smell of overripe bananas either, hence they become banana nut bread. Hubby loves it and I enjoy it as well, so it's a win win. I think banana nut bread is a healthy snack...bananas and nuts! What could be healthier than that? LOL.
DeleteSince I am new to your blog. Kind of...I would like to suggest that some day, instead of doing the canned blogs that others choose, do one of your own and suggest your readers answer the same.
ReplyDeleteYour birthplace...your family growing up...where is your favorite place to live? Your favorite book...movie...song...your favorite vacation spot...your favorite hobby...your favorite outside activity...your favorite television show...your favorite of whatever...I am sure you have answered these on your blog, but some of us have not read the older ones. You are a good writer by the way. Positive thinking too.
Thank you, Brenda. I appreciate your suggestions. This particular meme, the Tuesday 4, is the only weekly group participation blog that I normally participate in. I do this one because I was friends with the originator of this meme, Toni Taddeo, and now another of her friends, Annie from Cottage by the Sea, has taken up her mantle and carried it on in Toni's memory. That is why I like to participate in this particular one as often as I can. Toni was a wonderful person and very creative in her writings and ideas. It was a sad day in blogland when she passed away, but yet happy for her to have entered heaven's portals. As far as the questions/ideas, I probably have answered those questions before, but one day I may do them again. I appreciate your input. I hope have a blessed and wonderful rest of your week!!
DeletePam: Sorry that I'm late to the party. For a snack, right now, I like yogurt or rice cakes. ( I am trying to lose weight.) Our house is a green with white trim. It has been that way since the 1980s. At one time, every room in our house had green in the decor. For Lent, I am giving up my electronic tablet, I was spending too much time playing Classic Words, it's like Scrabble. For breakfast, I usually have toaster waffles with whipped cream and topped with fresh blueberries. I also make blueberry muffins, when I fee like it. (box mix, gluten free.)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cecelia. I like yogurt too, but haven't ever really tried rice cakes all that much. I like green and white...sounds calming to me. Toaster waffles with blueberries and whipped cream sounds yummy!! I should try that! I like strawberries and blueberries too.
DeleteI finally made it over here! I love love love your book pics! There is just something so special about old books.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is! I'm glad you made it over! Thank you!!
