Thursday Thankfulness

So thankful for tonight's sunset, because it was a portent of some much needed rain.

Sure enough, not even 10 minutes after I had taken these pictures I heard the wonderful sound of rain hitting on our metal roof...

This was the first rain here since the hurricane passed through a couple of weeks ago, and you wouldn't think it could be so dry after a hurricane, but it was very dry. It was like the hurricane just sucked up all the moisture in the air and took it with it as it moved up the coast to deposit it in other places.
So we were very thankful tonight to get a nice rain shower for a few minutes.

We do continue to pray for those in south Florida who are still suffering and recovering from the hurricane. In our thoughts of thankfulness for the blessing of rain here, we never want to forget what they are still enduring there. So very thankful for all those who have extended much comfort and care and assistance to so many.  May God bless them and continue to give them strength for the task that still must be completed.

Now, I know you probably don't want to hear Dixie Cottage news all the time, but this is a good story.
A few weeks ago we sold a very nice dining room table and chairs set and china closet to an older couple, and in return they wanted the store to take their old table and chairs and china closet, and give them some money for it.  Our son sometimes has a soft spot in his heart before he looks the situation over really good...and in this case he offered the couple a certain price for their old furniture before he really got it outside in the light to look it over really well.  Well, let's just say when he got a better look at the furniture he'd just purchased he felt like he'd gotten taken a bit.  It was formica and particle board and a set from the 1970's.  Not the usual style of furniture that we like to sell at Dixie Cottage, and because it was formica we really couldn't paint it and make it look pretty.  When I first saw it I told our son that he ought to just donate it to a thrift store and call it a done deal. I didn't want it taking up space in our store!!!
This is the china cabinet below. It really wasn't too bad, but again, just not the same quality that we try to have in the store. However, a deal is a deal, and so we cleaned it up (it needed it!) and set it up "AS IS" for sale.  The table and six chairs and china cabinet have sat there without much notice from customers until this morning, when my hubby and I were there alone in the store.
This older couple came in and walked right over to the table and chairs and said they'd take it, and then they noticed the china cabinet and said they'd take that too!

We helped them load up the table and chairs in their truck before they could change their minds and they said they'd be back later for the china cabinet. Thankfully they came back after our son was there to help load it.   We all did a happy dance after that furniture was totally gone from the store! And we thanked the Lord, because lately the sales have been a bit slow and it's been a little discouraging...so I feel like God has blessed our son for doing a good deed for one couple, and then this other couple seemed just tickled pink to find this set and said it was just what they needed!

Meanwhile, another answer to prayer was this beautiful hutch has also sold...this is one that has been painted and renewed and will also make another family happy...

And this lovely armoire also sold without us having to do anything to it. The couple wanted it "as is".
So we are very thankful for these blessings over the past couple of days.  When you run a small business, every sale is a blessing!

I also thank the Lord that I am feeling a lot better this evening than I was yesterday. Sometimes you just have to take a step back and get out of the way for a little while and rest. That's what I did, and thankfully today was a good day. Oh, and our sweet daughter in love baked a chicken pot pie and sent over some for us for our supper tonight! Now that was a blessing...and a good one too!

Now for something strange and funny...I was sitting here at my computer working, and I looked over to my left and noticed something very strange:
The lights were on in Pamela's Victorian Cottage!!  For those of you who are newbies to my blog you may not know about Pamela's Victorian Cottage because I haven't written about it in quite a while...and nor have I played with it (a dollhouse) in quite a while, and I most certainly have NOT turned on the lights inside of it in several months!  So you can imagine my consternation and surprise to see those lights burning!

Even the little Mother looks quite perplexed and worried about whatever could be going on!

The children are all looking at each other rather sheepishly as if to say, "It wasn't me! I didn't do it!"

And our little boy upstairs is kneeling by his bedside and saying his prayers. The other children are looking around and trying to figure out what's going on.
I have no answer for this mystery. I checked the battery pack for the lights and it is in the "off" position! So I just turned it back to the on position and the lights went off, and now I can't get them back on again. 'Tis a mystery!  Probably needs new batteries...but it sure got my attention!
Maybe I need to pay my little friends some more attention...
"Here's to being a child again.
To laughing without a reason,
smiling so that others will do
the same and believing the
best is all around us."

"But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me,
and do not forbid them;
for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 19:14

Good Night dear friends.
Remember to count your blessings!

  1. The recent sales were very nice to read about, Pam, and doing a good deed does have its rewards. The lights going on the Victorian Cottage was quite unusual especially since now they will not turn on. Glad to read that you are feeling better.

    1. Mystery solved! The batteries for the lights exploded in the control box, and that must have been their last "hurrah"... and so I removed them and tried to clean it up, etc., but it won't work even with new batteries, so that strand of lights must be replaced. Always something with household maintenance when we neglect our duties! Thankfully they are quite cheap at the Dollar Tree.

  2. You sure did have many blessings in sales this week. God knew that your son did a good deed for one couple and blessed him with one in return.
That is sure a mystery on the lights. Who would have guessed they would be on?
    Blessings,
    Betsy

    1. Thank you, Betsy. The light mystery has been solved. The batteries had exploded in the control box, and must have had one last "hurrah" before dying. I tried to replace the batteries, but the whole thing has died. So I must get another set of battery operated lights and reattach them inside the little house. That's what happens when we neglect our home maintenance! LOL.

  3. What a sweet post. I am so glad the table and cabinet sold. I have no doubt that God was blessing the act of kindness to the older ones. Good deeds won't go unnoticed by our Lord. And the little dollhouse...so adorable. God gives us what we are supposed to have, but oh how a little girl would have loved your home.

    1. I still hope that maybe someday I will have a great-granddaughter from my only grandson. They just live so far away...but who knows?

  4. I also thought of something else about the furniture. There are probably some out there looking for some cheaper things and Goodwill and places like that have really gone up. Also, there is a group of younger people looking for things from their younger days that you and I would just shake our heads at. My brother-in-law had this old kitchen table that I was pretty sure was worthless, but Jeff kept insisting I put it on Facebook Marketplace with what I thought was a ridiculous amount. I almost wanted to say to him, you put it on your account...that is too much to ask. I literally had a sale about 20 minute after I listed it. The girl who was young said her grandmother had that table when she was growing up and she had so many good memories and she couldn't believe she had found it. Who knew!?

    1. Ah, the memories an old piece of furniture or dishes or something similar can evoke. I know I have purchased items seen at a yard sale or flea market because they reminded me of something my parents had or my grandparents had, etc. They give us a kind of "comfort". And yes, we have found that one man's junk can be another person's treasure. You just never know what someone will love. I enjoy seeing that happen.

  5. How wonderful to sell the table, chairs, and hutch. I am actually looking for all of the above so I would enjoy visiting Dixie Cottage if it were in my corner.

What a darling dollhouse! Very mysterious goings on there. ☺️

    1. Thank you, Vee. I wish you could come visit us and take home a truck load of stuff! LOL. And I solved the mystery at the dollhouse...exploding batteries caused the lights to take their last gasp of light. Now I have to replace them because even with new batteries they won't work. Boo hoo. It's close to Halloween...LOL.

  6. What a sweet turn of events -- that which y'all thought were pigs in a poke were the answer to someone else's treasure!
I'm sure relieved to read your answer about the Victorian Cottage mystery lights and learn there wasn't the possibility of an electrical fire!
BTW, I've been forgetting to ask -- who does the artful staging at Dixie Cottage? Only yesterday I was taken by the doily, casually draped over an open drawer. So cool, like a magazine spread!

    1. Thank you, Myra. As far as the "artful staging" at Dixie Cottage, we all share the duties, but that particular casually draped doily was done by our new vendor in that particular "booth". Staging is a constant activity at the store...when something sells, we rearrange things around the store to fill up the empty places and reposition items so they get some attention from customers. I am learning how to do this a little more all the time. It's fun to do and it keeps me busy when things are slow.

    1. Thank you Sandi. I think so too. Now I have to go buy some more little lights to replace those, which is a bummer because I have to hot glue them to the ceiling in the doll house and sometimes I get my fingers burnt in the process! Ouch!! The things we do to have fun. LOL.

  8. I thought I heard Twilight Zone music playing while reading the strange goings-on in the cottage.... LOL! I once had a set of the little fairy lights that did the same thing each time the battery ran down, off was on and on was off. Verrrrrry interesting. Ha!

    1. Yes, it was a very Twilight Zone music moment. I was thinking the same thing. But alas! The batteries had exploded! And new batteries won't work, so I had to remove the whole strand of lights. I will shop for a new one today. It's just a pain to reattach it inside the little dollhouse, but "show must go on!". LOL.

  9. Thank you, Connie. Yes, operating a small business has its ups and downs. We are hoping and praying that the Christmas shopping season will help them to end the year on a high note. It's kind of a one day at a time existence. We pray God will help us keep it going, but we also know if it doesn't work out, He will still be there to take care of us all one way or the other. We are thankful for whatever blessings we receive.

  10. Pam: Up here, there is a day when the public is encouraged to patronize small businesses. It's the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Glad to know God blessed your son's deed and sent some people in who loved that table and cabinet. Peace and blessings to you and yours.

    1. Yes, we try to also promote small business shopping day as you mentioned. I do hope people will try to shop and buy locally. It saves on gas, shipping charges, and helps people support themselves! Thank you for your kind thoughts and words.

  11. Perhaps I should keep my opinion to myself, but I kinda think the cute little girl standing in the middle, the one with the white dress, had something to do with the lighting question. She just looks a bit guilty to me ....

As for Dixie Cottage, I am soooo pleased business is good! It is such a truly delightful place to shop!

    1. Thank you, Barbara! Business is good because of good people like you who have helped make it extra special!! And yes, the cute little girl in the middle does look a bit guilty...but alas! It was those crazy exploding batteries that were to blame!! I am now waiting for a new "electrician" to "rewire" the house with all new lighting...when I get around to it...LOL.
