Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!

Autumn Saturday Morning and All is Well
If you are a Facebook friend you may have already seen these photos. Sorry they are kind of blurry, but it was getting dark and it was zoomed in to across the pond...But anyway...we know it is fall here on Still Waters Pond because last night 10 Canada Geese landed and visited with Mr. and Mrs. Sand Hill Crane on their island for a spell.
They mulled about, chattering back and forth with each other...probably talked about the weather and how nice it was here and asking directions to the big lake where they can swim a bit, etc.
Our pond seems to be growing another marsh island...that area where they are standing used to be all water, but now it seems the land masses are shifting and it has become another little sand bar covered with dying water lilies. They tend to do that in the pond. I just hope they don't all end up covering the whole pond, but anyway...it does give the geese and cranes more space to land and build nests, etc.
After they visited for a while I could tell that the Cranes were getting a little concerned that the geese were taking up too much of their space, so they started their loud raucous cries at them, and then the geese started muttering among themselves a little more loudly until they worked themselves up into a honking frenzy and the next thing I knew they were up in the air and flying away. Too quickly for me to get focused and get a picture, but it was quite a sight.
I am sure they will be back. This is the season for them to start congregating on our lakes and ponds for the winter months, so the excitement has begun!! Stay tuned for further developments!
Meanwhile:
Back on shore I got busy the other nice cool morning and did some work out in my little butterfly garden area. We had removed all the garden decorations the previous week for the hurricane, and so now was a good time to try to get outside and clean up the garden and put it all back...
Yes, I know it still looks weedy. I did pull a lot of weeds and grasses away, but some of that stuff is also the remainder of the flowers that were planted. Some are starting to die back for the winter I guess, so I will continue to prune and pull and clean up as the days go by. Next spring I may do things totally over and prepare the ground better before planting...but I tend to do things spontaneously without much forethought and that's what happens...
Oh well, it still looks a lot better than it did before I ever planted the garden. And I love my new little lawn ornaments. I will not be putting any regular birdseed in these items because of the squirrels, but I am experimenting with Safflower seed in the glass bird feeder to see if the birds will eat it and the squirrel will ignore it because they don't like safflower seeds. So far so good...
Oh, changing gears a bit...back inside...It's been cool enough a few mornings this past week to turn on our fireplace...actually we didn't turn on the real heat part, just the lighted part that looks like a warm fire but isn't really warm yet. We mostly use this just for the ambience. It makes our house feel all warm and cozy!
Well, with that in mind, I will close for today. It's going to be another busy day. We have our "Agape Luncheon" at church, which is a gathering of church family for a pot luck meal and fellowship. I think I am making a pot of Hobo Stew (recipe can be found HERE ) and some cornbread. At least that's the current plan. We aren't going to Dixie Cottage this morning, but we shall see how things go. If things get really busy there, we may go in and help out for a while. We hope it does get busy...it's been kind of a slow week.
Okay, that's all folks! Have a blessed and beautiful day wherever you are!
Here's a thought for today:

I like your garden. And I like your photos of Still Waters Pond. Have a blessed day Pam.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful orange flowers!
ReplyDeleteWait...what is the TEACUP?
I know what you mean about the fireplace for ambiance. I use the Netflix fireplace, but the TV is right next to the real fireplace... 😂
What a racket that must be! Hopefully, it will never happen in the early morning.
ReplyDeleteYour garden did well. Behind every garden doing well is a good gardener.
Your church fellowship luncheon sounds wonderful. Have a good time of food and fellowship.
I enjoyed the photos. I love Canada geese...even if they can be crabby. If you have any during nesting season, give them a wide berth. They will violently protect their nest and young. I have been attacked before just for walking semi-near them. Love the new additions to the garden. I especially like that blue feeder. Very clever way to keep the rain out of the feed. I had a cup and saucer one years ago but the rain made it a yucky mess. I'm wondering what glue they used to put the pieces together? I put pieces together to make a bird bath this summer and it was pretty, but the glue has yellowed terribly in the sun and now it's not so pretty.
ReplyDeleteLoctite Clear Silicone Waterproof Sealant is what I used to actually repair the blue glass feeder. The squirrel had gone nuts over it when I first put it up with real sunflower seeds in it, and he kept jumping on it and swinging on it, and it finally fell and came apart from the impact. SO I reglued it with the above sealant and now there will NOT be any sunflower seeds in it. So far so good. The squirrel has not come near it. I don't know about whether or not it will yellow in time...hasn't been out there long enough. And yes, I am careful about the geese during their nesting time. They are very aggressive with the other geese. The nest is usually out on the big island in the pond, and I can't get near that so no problem for me. And they like it when I put out some bird seed on the ground for them. They've never tried to attack me YET. LOL.
DeleteI love your little garden, Pamela - I think it looks beautiful! And the little fireplace, warm or not, certainly does add a coziness to your home. Yes, we know that fall is here when the Canadian geese begin their migration. I love the honking they make when they fly overhead.
ReplyDeleteBlessings, and have a great weekend!
Pam: I love what you did with the butterfly garden. The things look intriguing to me. I wonder what the butterflies will think. We had a frost advisory out for last night. (Friday). Now, I see there is a freeze advisory for tonight. I had to get our winter coats cleaned and get them back before all this change in the weather. I have a space heater that looks like a piece of furniture that I use in the living room. Jim has a different style one for where he likes to stay. Peace and blessings
ReplyDeleteI'm getting here late again but have good memories of your Agape Potluck!! Love the Canadian Geese stopping by! Have a blessed Sunday!! xo
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun spectacle, witnessing those Canadian geese! Oh, I love your Butterfly Garden and the new ornaments. Sweet teapot! In spite of the outside temps, I still love turning on our fireplace glow when the sun sets. Pretty sure it was seeing past photos of your own fireplace, that prompted me to buy one. Tom doesn't get it, but it's the best gift I've given myself in a long time.
ReplyDeleteI like the cool evenings and mornings here...I hope you had a wonderful potluck, I shall email you, smiles.
ReplyDeleteI like your little flower garden... sometimes just planting is enough. I've done that for 55+ years. Some years things are planned, others not, but I always liked just doing whatever. Your new ornaments are lovely! Geese are such funny creatures, we've lived near them for nigh on 30 years and they always provide lots of entertainment lol. Blessings to you, my friend!
ReplyDeleteWe saw Canada Geese on a small pond a few days ago, the first ones we've seen in months! Love all the birds you see in your pretty pond. The weather is gorgeous again this week. Enjoy your week!

Hard to imagine the need for the fireplace already - especially in Florida. But isn't just lovely? Such a nice way to begin the day....and then when it warms up later in the day - even better!!:) Hope you are having a sweet week, friend!
