Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!

High Tea Time Finally Came
Finally the day for the "High Tea with the three wives of Henry Flagler" has happened! Hurricane Ian threatened to keep this from happening, but thankfully the wonderful ladies of the Historical Society persevered and kept moving forward with their plans as promised. It was a sold out event...And what a lovely event it was! I believe all of the ladies were ready for something lovely and fun after a week of anxiety and storm preparation and endurance and clean up from the storm. Our little community was spared any major damages, and we are very thankful.
As you know, if you've been following me for the past few weeks, I was very excited to sign up to go to this event and to prepare my special outfit for the day. Here is what I finally created:
It was such fun to see how others also got into the spirit of the day...oh...here are some special friends:
above: my friend Linda, (on the left) who grew up in my home town and attended the same school as I...and now lives in a little town not far from here wanted to come. She almost didn't make it as they had been away on vacation when Ian came calling, and they weren't sure if they could drive back into the state in time for this event today. But they persevered and made it home just in time for her to attend! In the middle is one of my special church friends, Vivian A., who wasn't sure if she would be able to attend and then decided to come at the last minute and made her reservation just in the nick of time before they declared it "sold out"! And then on the right is my friend Betty, who I've mentioned to you before. She loves to read our blogs and sometimes comments, but doesn't have her own blog so you may not know her. But Betty and her husband just recently moved into a little town not far from here and she has been down to see me at Dixie Cottage a couple of times and we forgot to take pictures, so I told her today we would be sure to get our pictures taken together (which you will see later).
And I was also surprised to discover that these three of my dear friends from church also decided to come today and were fortunate to get their reservations in just under the wire as well! L to R: Brenda, who is our church office administrator, Dottie who is our official church hugger...you can't get through church without a hug from sweet Dottie, and our lovely pastor's wife and worship/choir leader Carol. Three very special ladies!
In this picture I think my hat was too heavy for my head. LOL.
Another happy lady:
Each table was set with such lovely dishes and the food was wonderful.
It was so lovely to see this young mother with her two daughters enjoying the tea party.
Our guest speaker had arrived and I took her picture before I realized who she was!
This is the teapot used to serve our tea. Isn't it gorgeous?
Here is the "first Mrs. Henry Flagler", Mary Harkness Flagler. She ended up dying of consumption.
The second Mrs. Flagler had actually been the first Mrs. Flagler's nurse and a nanny for the children. After Mary Harkness Flagler died, Henry married Ida Audrey. She later was committed to a sanitorium for the mentally ill. He later divorced her and married the next Mrs. Flagler, below:
Mary Lily Kenan Flagler: Her story ended very sadly as after Henry Flagler died she remarried and it appears that her new husband was giving her drugs which led to her untimely death. It was never proven as such, but it appears he was after her large fortune...You can read more about this story here: https://flaglermuseum.us/history/flagler-biography
After this amazing portrayal we were invited to come up on stage and have our pictures taken with "Mrs. Flagler"It was so much fun.
And also with the rest of my friends. We had such a lovely time. I wish more could have attended.
So now I put the hat back on the shelf and hung up the fancy outfit and put away the gloves and old jewelry and come back to the present.
After hearing the sad stories of Henry Flagler's wives, who were, by the way, the richest women in the world at that time...my thought was that they each needed to know Jesus and perhaps their lives would have been happier. Money does not buy happiness or good health...There is only One that I know who gives our hearts everlasting peace...Jesus Christ, the Son of God:
Psalm 73:25-26
"Whom have I in heaven but You?
And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
26 My flesh and my heart fail;
But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
And with that I will bid you good night!

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, that looks like so much fun! I'm glad you got to go and enjoy yourself. You did a great job on the outfit. The hat looks great on you! And I got a kick out of the china on your table...that's my china pattern!...and the tea shop I like to go to here also uses a good bit of it. It must really capture the tea party feel or something!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a fun event!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos. Our town historical society holds regular teas. One is coming up soon I think but I have never gone. I should try it though. Glad you weathered the storm!

I'm delighted you were all able to gather after all! Everyone looked smashing and I can almost hear the giggles. Thank you for sharing your fun!
ReplyDeleteGrinning...thank you, looked like such a fun day! P.S. I would never know if money buys happiness or not ((more grinning)). So glad you had fun, smiles.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are okay. I feel humbled and blessed and more than ever wish others would wake up and smell the roses so to speak. Get over the whining that has been going on in this country and live...those a few miles south of us are devastated. I was under mandatory evacuation and went to son...we were all ready to go when the hurricane changed...I am in prayer for those south of us. We did do my birthday, but we made sure that we kept, in the back of our minds, those who were not celebrating. we had a low key meal and gifts...
ReplyDeleteSo thankful that the storm shifted away from you and that you were safe. It was a very devastating week for so very many people, and the sorrows continue to mount for many. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all, and especially the first responders and caregivers and all those affected by this horrific tragedy. Although our area was spared the brunt of this storm, it was a stressful time for many as they prepared for all the possibilities of what could be. Many people in this area have loved ones and friends in the affected areas as well. It is very much in our hearts and minds. However there are times when we need a release from the tensions and stresses of life and we come together and count our blessings and give thanks to God that our lives and homes were spared. It was an afternoon of release and comfort to our community to share in each other's lives in this pleasant way. I am glad you had a nice birthday with your family.
DeleteLife must go on…
DeleteYou ladies all look so nice and I am sure that the tea was a much needed diversion from all the stresses of the week. It sounds like an interesting historical discussion and it certainly was a culinary delight.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures are wonderful! So elegant and I love the period costumes! I’m sure all felt they needed this after all everyone has been through!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful event, Pamela! I know I would have enjoyed it as I love hearing about people who lived at different times and places. The food looked absolutely delicious, too. So glad you were able to attend!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
What a wonderful and historic Afternoon Tea and lovely finger sandwiches, savories, scones and sweet which make with tea for a fabulous Afternoon Tea!
ReplyDeleteWhat FUN!! Everyone looks fabulous, Pam! Can you send me more information about this? It would be fun to do at my church. Your outfit and hat are perfect!! xo
ReplyDeleteThis looks like it was a wonderful event, Pam, and glad that the weather did not cancel the event and they everyone safely attended. The clothing was lovely, but the smiling faces showed that everyone was having a great time. I really liked your outfit and the hat was a nice accent.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely afternoon you had with these special ladies. It was nice to "meet" some of your friends from church too. I'm sure a few hours of diversion was much appreciated after the past week. All of the hard work that went into the event made it even more special.
ReplyDeleteI'm keeping all of the people that were affected by Ian in my prayers. All the way up the coast, but especially Florida and Georgia. Such devastation. It reminds me of what you see after a tornado here in our area.
Blessings,
Betsy
