Wednesday is one of those days in the middle of the week when I just feel like posting whatever I've been seeing as I wander around the yard or our walking place.
I know we are all getting tired of "social distancing", but realize we have to keep it up until things get better. So here are a few birds and other things that are keeping their distance:
This lovely Great Blue Heron stands alone in the pond throughout the day, fishing for his supper and generally just looking around at the lovely pond lilies while he waits for the next fish to appear.
The Canadian Geese Couple continue to dwell here on Still Waters Pond. This male waves off any strangers while he watches over his mate, who must be getting anxious for her babies to be born.
Almost every day the Male escorts the Female goose up to our yard, and he watches over her while she eats bird seed under the bird feeder.
This is usually late in the afternoon, when I suppose they deem the nest is safe enough to leave for a short period of time, but at the least little noise of anything that may sound threatening to them, they take off flying back across the pond with a lot of honking and flapping of wings.
But now, every morning and some afternoons, the male goose comes to the feeder alone and helps himself to whatever seeds are left on the ground after the squirrels have scattered them out of the feeder. This morning I was really surprised as I went out on the deck to drink my morning glass of Metamucil (yes, that is a daily routine that I must do every day now! Doctor's orders!), and as I was standing there stirring and drinking (have to stir before every sip...) I noticed the male goose on the other side of the pond sitting where he usually spends the day in a close proximity to wherever the nest is (I suppose, because we can't see the nest from here), and as soon as he saw me come on to the deck, he immediately flew directly across the pond and landed on our shore and started walking right up to the bird feeder, as if he knew if I was out there, there might be something good to eat. While he was still approaching the feeder, I dared to walk down the steps and go to the feeder and shake out some extra seeds on the ground, and it did not deter him one bit. I quickly went back up the steps, and he continued his walk directly to the feeder and with a look of gratitude immediately began eating the scattered bird seed on the ground.
He did not mind my watching him at all. He even flapped his wings and fluffed his feathers for me, which must be his way of saying "Thank You."
So I reluctantly left him there alone to eat his feast as I had my own things to take care of. But it was a close encounter of a pleasant kind. He has learned to trust us, so I hope that means once the goslings are born he will bring the family over to meet us.
Now, if any of you are my Facebook friends, (and many of you are), you've probably already seen the conversation between the two Red Shouldered Hawks that I placed on there this week. There are many more pictures than just these three, but I wanted to give you a little sample of this couple who seem to be having a bit of a disagreement during their time of "social distancing"
Hey, someone is watching us!!
I told you to quit arguing with me...
Anyway, if you want to see more their conversation, go to my facebook page and click on the photo album "Red Shouldered Hawks practicing Social Distancing".
And from our walk one day I spied this Red Bellied Woodpecker all alone up in a dead tree:
I've also been watching the progress of the Cactus blooms, as they are always so pretty and don't last long so you have to catch them while they are open:
Looks like this little bee is enjoying some Cactus Juice:
Isn't it amazing how something that is so prickly and unpleasant to bump into can produce such a lovely flower? There must be a lesson in there somewhere...
How about this verse:
Proverbs 31:30 (NIV)
"30. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised."
Okay, that's good! Now I must get a move on...
someone is wanting his lunch, and he won't go out to the bird feeder
and pick it off the ground. LOL.
Have a blessed and happy day, my friends. Look for the beauty and
the positive in what is around you today.
We can always just see the negative in the world situations,
but we don't have to camp out there.
God is still alive and well...and He is not going to forsake His children!
Amen??
Pamela, we are friends on Facebook, but I rarely see you there, so I'm ever so grateful that you reposted some photos here. The social distancing examples with the hawks are great! And I think it's wonderful that the Canadian goose isn't afraid of you, and seems to know on what side his bread is buttered. :) Hope you will soon see some little goslings! What a treat that would be!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Hi Martha, I just tagged you on Facebook with the photo album of the hawks, so I hope you will get it. They are pretty funny. Yes, I feel like I am living in your little world of "Adventures in the Glade", with all the creatures chatting with one another. It's fun to imagine what God's creatures are thinking as they walk and fly among us humans. Have a blessed day!!
DeleteOh how very special to have the goose come towards you in complete trust! I love it when the birds show little or no fear of me. The cactus flower is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ruth. I believe this particular goose couple must have come from another place where they were very used to people, because they are not nearly as timid as the other couple we had here all winter. Not sure where they went, but this couple ran them off and took over the pond...and the bird feeder droppings! Yes, I love to see the cactus flowers bloom, but like I said above, you have to be quick because they don't stay open long. There "beauty is fleeting"...
Delete((Being silly)) So, I think your geese know not to return here to the great white north due to the insanity of our governor, so maybe they know something I don't.
ReplyDeleteI think the Conley's will be making some plans...need to find a job. Hard to do when EVERYTHING is closed (40 something days now). According to our governor-J-U-L-Y, it has stopped being funny. YEP.
Thank you for the being the constant ray of hope in this sad reality we are living in now...smiles (and I do mean that in a good way)
I am praying for the Conley family. I can only imagine what you have been going through. I know you have family obligations there, but I pray something can be worked out for you all to have your "dreams come true". Just stay focused on the goal...and keep moving forward. Good times are still ahead for you...I do believe it.
DeleteLove to see all of these fine feathered friends...I mean I could just watch birds all day long...you have made some new friends in those geese! As I was sitting here (just a while ago) a big ol' turkey waddled right behind the RV within a stone's throw. And the heron...well, he's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYes, I am thrilled to have the geese learning to trust us, and also to watch the other birds come and go. You are blessed to have a wild turkey...apparently there are others if he's there! God surely knows how to entertain us, doesn't He?
DeleteIts fun to watch the birds. Nice photos!
ReplyDeleteTHank you, Ann. Yes, I love watching the birds. I was afraid when we moved here that I would miss the deer and bears, etc., but I have been well entertained by the fine feathered friends we are making here. And they aren't as dangerous as the bears and coyotes. I would love to see some deer, however. They are out there, just not in our yard (yet). Have a blessed day.
Deletenice photos. It's fun watching birds for sure.
ReplyDeleteAh...there ARE two of you! I knew it!!! LOL. Thank you for visiting again! Have a blessed and beautiful day!!!
DeleteI enjoyed seeing the bird pictures. That would be very fun if you get to see the babies. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sandy!. Yes, it would be such fun. I do hope they will honor us with this pleasure, since we have been watching and waiting for so long!! And feeding them too!! It would only be the right thing to do!! Hope you are having a great week also!!
DeleteSuch great photos, Pam, and it seems you are making friends too! I think your backyard wildlife give you the same peace going to the farm on Wednesdays gives to me. Keep us posted on those babies!
ReplyDeleteYes, it does seem as though we are making some fine feathered friends here. And yes, I love how you get to interact with the animals at the farm. To quote Greg Gutfeld on "The Five", "Animals are Great"....LOL. Have a blessed day!!
DeleteYour perceived attitudes and conversations with the birds are cute and certainly illustrate what surely is happening in some households where social distancing is wearing on the nerves. Love your sense of humor. Oh that more could distance themselves just a little more, like your woodpecker, to settle their emotions before returning to the home scene.
ReplyDeleteAnd the prickly, unpleasant flower, although beautiful, ah yes, there is a lesson in there. How many of us (perhaps myself included) have spent so much time on our outward appearances but neglected to develop that sweetness of spirit that so pleases God?
You’re entirely correct. Our Father will not neglect His children.
Definitely..."Our Father will not neglect His children". We are so blessed to be called "His Children". And even in the midst of this "pandemic", He is here with us, caring for us, protecting us, and giving us wisdom and hopefully patience to endure. With God helping us, we can get through this and come out stronger on the other side!
DeleteThose Hawks are quite a sighting! How unusual to see two of them close enough to get photos! WOW! Love the Canada geese too and all of our woodpeckers. Seeing so many birds is one the things we like best about living in Florida! And our cactus are blooming around here too. I'm sure a lot of them with have blooms now that we've had a good rain. Take care of yourself and stay safe! Hugs from close by, Diane
ReplyDeleteAre you on facebook? If so, maybe we can connect and you can see the whole grouping of pictures of the hawks. It was rather comical. I think they are nesting around here as I am seeing more hawk activity and the appearance of them carrying things in their claws as they fly to and from the trees. If you are on Facebook, send me an email and we can connect, if you so desire. Have a blessed day.
DeleteSo glad I wandered on over to your place!! I enjoyed all the pictures, I never tire of nature and the beauty God has given us. Sending you a social distancing ((hug)) !!
ReplyDelete(((hugs))) back at you!!!I hope one day we can all gather and give each other real hugs, but until then, we will enjoy each other's company here and be thankful that God has led us together. Thank you for visiting today!!!
DeleteLoved the photos, Pamela, but most of all, your encouraging thoughts, we do have a choice about how we deal with situations, my devotion this morning was on cultivating a thankful heart in all circumstances! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLike you I am blessed to have a place to view God's creations up close, we had a couple of geese visit us every year for a while, they even hatched a family one year. We haven't seen them in a while, but they are always welcome to come back, However my hummingbirds are back.
Blessings,
Sue
Thank you, Sue. Always a pleasure to visit with you either here or at your beautiful place! Yes, we are blessed to have God's creation around us. Perhaps the geese I am enjoying flew down from your place. I will try to take good care of them! And yes, we have had hummingbirds too, although for some reason I am not seeing them as often this week. The weather has been kind of crazy, so maybe they are hiding. I'll have to keep watching. Have a blessed week.
DeleteI loved they photos of the beatiful yellow flowers. They look so nice. Peace and blessings.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cecelia...flowers on a cactus...amazing that something so prickly can have such a beautiful flower. There is hope for all of us yet! Praying you are having peace during this time, and that God is healing you day by day as well. We can get through this, and we will be much stronger on the other side. Amen?
DeleteOh, how I've missed your beautiful fotos of where you live. Just so amazing!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debbie. Welcome back!!! It is so wonderful to have you back among us, although as a Facebook friend I never lost sight of you...and have enjoyed your funny puns and other fun posts that have made us smile through it all. Plus your daily thankful posts...always makes me stop and pause and think about what I am thankful for each day. Thank YOU!!! You are a faithful friend to all of us.
