In case you didn't know it, this week is Thanksgiving!
(Sermon Notes 11/18/18)
It seems as though Thanksgiving is being forgotten, stuck in the middle between Halloween and Christmas. If you went to the stores in August and September and October, you saw lots and lots of Halloween decorations and costumes. And then about mid-way through October (or maybe even sooner) they started putting out Christmas decorations. If you looked hard enough, you might find a few things that had to do with Thanksgiving, but not really very much. It was either Fall or Christmas, but not much emphasis on Giving Thanks.
Perhaps we don't think we have much to thank God for...perhaps the material world has gotten to us, and we don't stop and think about where everything came from...or to Whom we should give thanks.
Our scripture for today is:
Psalm 100 (NKJV)
1. "Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!
2. Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
3. Know that the Lord, He is God;
It is He who has made us,
and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
4. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
and into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
5. For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
and His truth endures to all generations."
God warned the children of Israel in Deuteronomy 8:10-11 not to forget Him when they entered into the land which He had given them:
10. "When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you.
11. Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today..."
(you can read the rest of that chapter for the full story)
God is not just talking to the Israelites in the 100th Psalm...see verse 1:
"Make a joyful shout to the Lord, ALL YOU LANDS!"
And He is not just speaking to the people in Bible times...see verse 5:
"For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
and His truth endures to ALL GENERATIONS."
The Meriam Webster definition of Thanksgiving is:
1. a: capitalized :
THANKSGIVING DAYb: a public acknowledgment or celebration of divine goodness
2: the act of giving
thanks3: a prayer expressing gratitude
- When we live with an "attitude of gratitude" it has been said that those who frequently feel grateful have more energy
- Are less likely to become depressed
Don't leave your "attitude of gratitude" at the Thanksgiving table.
Acknowledge and remember that God has blessed us in mighty, mighty ways
Sometimes we get in the habit of complaining instead of expressing our thankfulness.
We have become so spoiled. When we have to take an airplane flight somewhere instead of exclaiming about the miracle of "Wow! We're Flying!", we instead complain about how cramped the seats are, or the long lines we had to wait in at the airport, or that the WiFi didn't work on the plane...Things that we never even heard of not too many years ago, and now we are so spoiled we complain and gripe when we are delayed or uncomfortable for an hour or so.
People in Jesus' time were no different...In the book of John chapter six, just after Jesus performed the miracle of feeding the five thousand with five loaves of bread and two small fish, the next day Jesus said to the multitude who chased after Him to the other side of the sea,
in John 6:26-27
"Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
27. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life,
which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."
The people came with an attitude of entitlement, expecting Jesus to keep feeding them, rather than acknowledging and giving thanks for the miracle of the blessing of the bread from heaven, which does not perish, but gives everlasting life.
The Biblical antidote to a complaining, demanding spirit is
- to give thanks...express thanksgiving to God
- Read God's Word daily
- come together as a community of faith to encourage one another
- Draw closer to God
Recognize that we are all flawed, but when we do these things we will see that this will become the basis for our Thanksgiving. When we begin to praise God and give Him thanks for all He has done we will find that our "attitude of gratitude" will become the norm rather than the exception.
Here are some words to reflect on as we enter this week of "Thanksgiving":
"Holy God, we thank You for the promise of Your Presence.
You call us to be part of Your new creation.
Loving Christ, we celebrate Your call to join You in God's new creation.
We come to join the harvest,
to help carry Your news out into the world.
Empowering Holy Spirit, we give thanks that You encourage us to respond with joy.
Come fill us now, as we gather to share Your Presence in the bread and cup."
Ephesians 1:3
"God has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ."
Amen! And Happy Thanksgiving!
Please Note : I want to repeat this disclaimer here...the notes, outline, and content included here are based upon my own personal understanding of the message that was being given. I am not attempting to completely quote or reproduce this message or any other message I've shared previously. Just as each person reading these notes may glean insights and thoughts that seem to directly apply to one's own situation and interpretation, my own delivery of these messages is skewed by my hearing and translation of what is being said. Some may read my notes here and wonder if they were hearing the same message as I...and I say, God speaks to each of us as He wills...there are things He is trying to get across to each individual that may be entirely different than what the person sitting next to you in the pew is needing to hear... That is how the Holy Spirit works! He knows what we need to hear and how to apply it to our hearts. So it is with that understanding that I present these sermon notes to you.
Sermon Notes: FUMC Interlachen, FL, Pastor A.C. Myers, 11/18/2018
I love Thanksgiving Day, and I remember memorizing Psalm 100 when I was in public elementary school and our teachers began each school day with prayer and a pledge to the flag. Hope you and your family have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteI am SO glad you said this Karen, about memorizing Psalm 100 in public elementary school, because I remember the same thing, and I've often wondered if I was just imagining it or did I learn it at Sunday School and just think it was at school? But you have confirmed to me that yes, indeed, we were taught this in elementary school, and yes, we also began school each day with a prayer and a pledge to the flag. I feel so sorry for our current and future generations of children who have no such memories or influence in their lives. We, as a nation, are reaping what is being sown. I do pray that you and your family will also have a wonderful week and Thanksgiving. Thank you for visiting.
DeleteWow...wow. Isn't that amazing? Our schools can be that way again.
DeleteYes, Sandi, they COULD be, but it will take an act of God stirring up HIS people for that to ever happen. Praying daily for our country to be turned back to God. He is our only hope!
DeleteAlways insightful, Pam! Your photos are always perfect. Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Terri. I do hope that you and Joe and all who are near will have a blessed and Happy Thanksgiving! It's going to be a great week!!
DeleteDr Charles Stanley, taught about "How did Thanksgiving get lost" yesterday. We should always give God thanks for everything. We would be and have nothing without Him. Yes it seems every year it gets shorter and shorter, skipping right over to Christmas. Guess stores doesn't make as much money on Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct that there doesn't seem to be much money made on Thanksgiving. What a shame. I personally like Thanksgiving as a holiday even better than Christmas, only because I enjoy being with family without all the trappings of having to buy gifts, etc. We can just sit down together at the table and be thankful to be together as a family, no strings attached! It helps me get my heart right to start preparing for Christmas. But I am pretty much set in my ways... no Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving is totally over. I can't handle so much overload! I'm thankful to have a few days of rest before the next big event begins!! Have a blessed and wonderful Thanksgiving with your beautiful family. So wonderful that you have a sweet little great-grandson to make things even more fun!!!
Deleteso much to be thankful for!
ReplyDeleteYes, Indeed!!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
DeleteWonderful post and photos Pamela. Thanksgiving was always my Mom's favorite holiday. When she was alive we always had anywhere from 35-45 family and friends for the day. We would rent the church hall and spend the day eating tons of food and later playing games. I miss those days even though some family still gets together now. Have a day of blessings and Thankgiving my friend.
ReplyDeletewow! That is quite a large gathering of family and friends. So wonderful to have such happy memories. We will have around 20 here on Friday this week (due to others having other family gatherings on Thursday), and we will also eat tons of food and then go outside and play games, weather permitting. Perhaps there will be some indoor games as well. I am excited, but busily preparing. Have a blessed and wonderful Thanksgiving.

ReplyDeleteI did notice that there was an abundance of Hallowe'en items in stores and it grows every year. It's a huge money maker for businesses as is Christmas. The Christmas stuff was out the last week that I was out shopping. Perhaps it was out even earlier but I don't get to the stores that often unless it's to buy groceries or something specific I need. The church photos are beautiful. I love small old churches and the ceramic turkey and the crewel embroidery are beautiful. Enjoy your Thanksgiving dear Pamela.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joyful. Yes, I noticed today that even though people are buying their Thanksgiving turkeys and getting everything ready for the big day, Christmas decorations are up and there is also that anticipation of getting ready for Christmas as well. I guess it is just the season of excitement and family gatherings, and we should celebrate it all...but just be sure to take the time to Give Thanks with a grateful heart. I am glad you enjoyed the photos. We love our little old church, but most especially the sweet people within. Be blessed dear friend.
DeleteI too agree that Thanksgiving has been lost somewhere in the cracks in so many stores. We have to keep it alive in our hearts. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteYes, I will definitely be giving thanks this week. This will most likely be the last Thanksgiving in this house, and I am happy that a large part of my family will be here to celebrate. It will definitely be a day to give thanks with a grateful heart. Have a blessed Thanksgiving with your loved ones as well.
DeleteOh, the power of the Gratitude Attitude! You've expressed it so beautifully here, Pamela, with perfect scripture and photos. Hope you Thanksgiving Day is a blessed one!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Martha. I am very thankful for all the good things the Lord is doing in our homes and lives. Yes, I will practice the "gratitude attitude" all year long. I may need to be reminded now and then, however! have a blessed Thanksgiving with your loved ones.
DeleteBeing thankful makes life so much better. I remember those same things from school as a kid. I guess we were all there in the 50's. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. I love the pictures of your church.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nonnie. Yes, we were blessed to grow up in such a generation. It is so sad that children today have no clue about such things. Praying for a revival in our country. It isn't too late.
DeleteYes I know it's Thanksgiving week, how did it get here so fast? I agree that Thanksgiving is being pushed to the background, it would not surprise me at all if it becomes part of Christmas. I hope not, it's a very special holiday, a time to reflect on all things that bless us, all that He has provided. Everyday is a day of thanks, but Thanksgiving is a day of thanks when families and friends come together and enjoy God's bounty with thanksgiving. It's very special, very special indeed.
ReplyDeleteYes, I so agree. We, as a nation, and as families, need this day of praise and Thanksgiving. Even amid the terrible disasters of the country that have befallen so many, there are still reasons to be thankful. Praying for those families now. May God send them hope and blessing and comfort.
DeletePamela: This afternoon, I will spend an hour serving Thanksgiving dinner at our church. It is an annual event. The community is invited. The city buses will bring the people out from downtown for free. The church usually serves around 400 meals. This event is a memorial, named for two people, one who taught the church how to care for those who don't have anything,(he didn't have anything the world values) and the other who fed people for several years from a building in a poorer section of town. A friend of hers actually started it and asked the lady from our church to assist her. That friend took over the effort when the first lady passed on. Peace and Blessings to you and yours.
ReplyDeletePam, thank you for this timely reminder to give thanks--not just now--but each and everyday. We have so much for which to praise God. It's easy to complain, to gripe but then to realize that those complains are First World problems is eye opening. I've made it a practice for the last several years to write down several (this year I've been going for at least 4-5) things/people/places for which I'm thankful.
ReplyDeleteLove and blessings! Happy Thanksgiving!
