Holiday Specials
Thank you for joining in for Tuesday 4, begun by Toni Taddeo and kept in her memory.
Christmas is fast approaching for billions of people...
1. Do you have a favorite Christmas carol and if so is there a particular version you especially like?I don't know how to answer this...I love them all. My list would be too long...but I love all the old traditional Christmas carols. We only get to sing them once a year, so I enjoy them all I can while I can.
2.Do you have a special dinner for the holidays? What foods are included?
Seems like we've been doing something different each year lately. Used to always be ham on Christmas, but we've done lasagna a few times too. I was kind of thinking about a Prime Rib Roast, but I don't know how to cook it and they are so expensive, so that probably won't happen. I have to talk to my daughter in love Rose about it and see what she's thinking. We try to work it out together. I am SO thankful for her help. We usually have a Hamloaf sometime during the holidays. My paternal grandmother always made one after Christmas with the leftover ham ground up with ground pork and a mustard/vinegar/brown sugar glaze...so good. We may do that at some point. Scalloped potatoes goes well with that.
3.Holiday movies ... which do you like to watch?
National Lampoon Christmas Vacation, The Bishop's Wife, A Christmas Story, A Christmas Carol (preferably the old one with Reginald Owen as Scrooge), and I'm sure there's others.
4. What traditions do you continue to keep year after year for the holidays?
This Wednesday evening our kids are coming over and we are going to make homemade pizza, and then we will work on setting up the train and village under the Christmas tree. That has become our family tradition here in the past few years. I grew up with a train/village under the tree as my father was quite a Lionel Train collector, and then we also had a small train set for our boys to play with but not always under the tree. I'm not going to post any pictures with this post so I will save that for after this Wednesday to share with you.
I am thankful to be feeling better. I didn't go to church on Sunday or to Bible Study today, but I do plan to go to choir practice Tuesday night because we are practicing for our Christmas cantata, which will be on Dec. 21st. And this Wednesday is our Ladies' Annual Christmas Party/Luncheon at church, and it is always a lot of fun and I don't want to miss that. Rose is going to go with me too, so it will be very nice.
Also, regarding the rain...we received almost one inch of rain, which was very nice, but definitely NOT enough to fill Still Waters Pond. So we continue to pray for more rain whenever it can get here! We are missing our geese and ring-necked ducks this year because of the lack of water. Thankfully we still have the Sand Hill Cranes and Great Blue Herons and hawks and other birds.
Today's Bible readings came from Luke 1:26-38, in which the angel Gabriel foretells the birth of Christ to the virgin maiden named Mary. We've heard the story many times, and you may look up the reference there and read it again for yourself if you wish. But out of all those verses today, the one that stands out the most for me is this one:
37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”
And once Mary had her questions answered by the angel, she was satisfied that what she was told was true, and her response to the angel was:
38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”
And even though Mary's life was being changed dramatically from that moment on, she was willing to believe God's messenger and accept the challenge and calling upon her life that God had placed upon her and move forward in peace and confidence.
Although we may not be faced with the same kind of challenge that Mary faced, we do each one come to times in our lives when we may be asked to take a big step of faith, or to have our faith stretched to the limit. Things happen beyond our control to ourselves, our mates, our children, and/or our homes and other loved ones. We may have huge doubts and fears at times, not knowing what the future may hold when there's a loss of a job, or a serious health issue, or other totally unexpected losses. But that one verse above, "For with God NOTHING will be impossible" speaks volumes. With God we can face our uncertainties without fear, knowing that He is in control, and that He is able to provide whatever it is we may need. His love and care for us is unlimited...and no matter what...please remember, "with God, NOTHING will be impossible." Amen.
I think I am like you - I like everything and anything that has to do with Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your answers. I too love Christmas and Christmas Carols. Our message at Church yesterday was on that Bible passage. It's good to focus on that this time of year and remember what we are truly celebrating.
ReplyDeleteSame here. I prefer all the old Christmas carols and hymns.
ReplyDeleteOh Pamela, we had Prime Rib last year - its very easy to prepare and believe me, worth every single dime! Delicious. Buy from a butcher if at all possible. We also bought grass fed and local. Makes a huge difference. You can do it. As easy as a ham or turkey!
This looks like fun, I might join in! We love National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation too, such a fun film. Praying you get well soon! x
ReplyDeleteI love the scripture verse and enjoyed reading about your Christmas traditions. Enjoy your ladies luncheon. I'm sure it will be fun.
ReplyDeleteChristmas is great no matter what!
ReplyDeleteChristmas is great no matter what!
ReplyDeleteThe 'Christmas' scriptures are beautiful, so much faith abounds throughout each verse.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to know that you are on the mend, Pamela, and that the "kids" will be coming over to help you with getting the train set up under your tree. I'll keep praying for more rain to bless your neighborhood, too. All things Christmas are all good!
ReplyDeleteHurray for your vim n' vigor returning again! There's a nasty nora virus going around these parts that's already sidelined two of my friends ... and the ER where she was sent has no beds remaining!
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you on the older, classic Christmas songs. Shows my age, but some of this "stuff" they're playing in the stores makes me cringe.
Tom wants to do a prime rib for Christmas Eve, but given the prices, I'm still on the fence. Your traditions sound lovely!
Thank you so much Pam for the ending thoughts on your post today. They are filled with Hope and Promise. I needed it. I need to turn my eyes Upward...
ReplyDeleteI think one of my favorite Carols is more new ... Mary Did You Know? The words give me chills every time I hear or sing it. "Mary when you kiss your tiny baby , you kiss the face of God...So profound...
We used to have a prime rib Christmas Day dinner at my Mom's home. It was so good. Now I just can't pay at least $40.00 for it. We do usually have Ham and all the traditional goodies too. Things will be different this year. It will be just Dave and I. Family is going to various places. Dave can't sit in the car for 8 hours to go to granddaughters home in Las Vegas so we choose to stay home. Its going to be weird. Mark's in Oregon and other Granddaughter and hubby are going to his parents in So. Cal. We are just trying to figure out what we will do.
Ok got to run. Company will be here in 7 hours.
Sue
I am sorry your Christmas day will be without family near, but hopefully you will get together with them at some point during the holidays. Maybe you could invite another couple who will be alone that day? Just a thought. Hoping your dinner party is going well tonight. I can imagine it is a very happy time. (((Hugs)))
DeleteAmen....and I keep telling myself that with God nothing is impossible when it comes to Sam's healing. I stand on this. I would like to have prime rib, but like you, I don't know if I know how to fix it. lol. I was just telling another blogger that I really do not want to have the traditional. I know you are already looking forward to the kids coming over...Gonna be a great Christmas Season.
ReplyDeleteHi Pam, a yule log is called a buche de noel in French and is basically a jelly roll filled with a whipped cream filling and coated in chocolate to look like a log. I use cherries on top to look like berries.
ReplyDeletethe only tradition I grew up with was turkey and all the trimmings were on Christmas and Thanksgiivng. we never had turkey except on those two holidays. and of course tree and PRESENTS.
ReplyDeleteMy dad was not a tradition person and I am my dad to the bone.. Mother loved all traditions and had her own things, like putting out certain things, hanging fake mistetoe on the lamp shades. ha ha
glad you feel better, hoped you got our 2 inches, maybe next storm you will. supposed to be dry this winter. hope not. we stopped cooking anything on Christmas about 2017 and just went out to eat, not fancy, Duff Buffet, Country Buffet and Golden Corral. that all stopped when Bob got sick. have fun with DIL..
I know it is hard to miss church thig time of year but that was a smart decision on your part! Keep resting and healing; prayers continue!
ReplyDeleteDear Pamela, I enjoyed your responses. I love ❤️ everything Christmas...yes, including Winter, snow ❄️ and cold 🥶 weather.
ReplyDeleteYa know...Mary Did You Know is a beautiful song at Christmas too. I thought I mentioned it in my post, but I didn't. I got to see Mark Lowry in concert several years ago when this song was new and I have loved it ever since. We sang it at a church Christmas program too. Loved your answers! Have a nice week.

Hi Pamela, I like that version of A Christmas Carol too. I love traditional Christmas carols the most. I like Breath of Heaven by Amy Grant. I am glad you got some rain and hopefully you will get more for the pond. Glad you are feeling better, but don't over do it.
