Tuesday 4: Merry Little Christmas

 A Merry Little Christmas

Thank you for joining in for Tuesday 4, begun by Toni Taddeo and kept in her memory.

Christmas is fast approaching for millions of people...

1. Do you have a favorite Christmas carol and if so is there a particular version you especially like?

It is hard for me to choose just one Christmas Carol that I like. I love them all. One tradition that my hubby and I like is to listen to Handel's Messiah (the first part) during the Christmas season. We try to save the second part for Easter, but we usually listen to the whole thing both holidays at some point. Hubby also loves to listen to some of Mozart's Christmas music. Of course we love ALL the traditional Christmas Carols. I honestly cannot narrow it down to one. We have CD's with music that we listen to during the week of Christmas in particular, and the Christian radio stations play Christmas music all month long, so I listen to that if I happen to be in the car by myself. (Which doesn't happen very often anymore since I retired...)

2.Do you have a special dinner for the holidays? What foods are included?

We vary each year on what we have on Christmas day, but more often than not we have ham or my Grandma Mursch's ham loaf recipe. This year my daughter in love is baking the hamloaf for us, and a friend is coming to join us and is bringing a wonderful seafood casserole over rice. We will have a green salad and some other vegetables and of course pies for dessert. Probably a pumpkin and a chocolate cream pie, and maybe apple if I have time.  A couple of years ago we had lasagna for Christmas dinner, and that was a big hit too. When my mother in law was still living, we would always have a "fresh ham" for Christmas, which is a big pork roast. That was always delicious, but it isn't always easy to find.

3.Holiday movies: which do you like to watch?

I love to watch "Miracle on 34th Street", "The Bishop's Wife" (the old version with Cary Grant and Loretta Young and David Niven),

A Christmas Carol, (the 1938 version with Reginald Owen as Scrooge, and Gene Lockhart as Bob Cratchit) , and also the newer movies of "A Christmas Story" and "Christmas Vacation" for a good laugh.

4. What traditions do you continue to keep year after year for the holidays?

As was true in my family growing up, we do not put any gifts out under the tree until late Christmas eve, when any of the "kids" who may still be home have gone to bed.  Our "kids" are all adults now, but that is still the tradition. No one sees any gifts until they get up Christmas morning, and that saves from having people shaking and rattling and peeking at gifts to try and determine what is in them. We also have stockings for every member of the family. They usually are filled with candy, fruit, nuts, and/or small gifts.
Here I am with my sister and two brothers. I am the littlest one on the left. This was our first Christmas in our new house that my Daddy built in 1957. Our stockings weren't very big...I'm not sure if "Santa" brought us bigger ones filled with goodies that year or not.

And this is me on Christmas morning. I got what I wanted...a Doctor kit! Can you tell I was happy? Again, this was our first Christmas in this house, and we didn't have any rugs on the cold concrete floor yet. The concrete block "brick" walls were still unpainted . That fireplace in the previous picture was our main source of heat, except for a small propane wall heater back in the hallway near the bedrooms, and it was COLD, even in Florida! That little chair behind me made of pine logs was part of a set my mother bought from some Seminole Indians who were out peddling their wares from the back of a truck.  We didn't have much furniture in the house yet and she wanted something to sit on and this was cheap I guess so she bought it and a little settee for two.  It wasn't very comfortable and kind of ugly, and it seems like I remember my father not being very pleased with her purchase, but it eventually became porch furniture outside. Our tree was one someone brought us from out in the woods, and I guess my Daddy didn't have time to put up the train under the tree that year.  But even though things were a bit cold and bare, we had a wonderful Christmas and this little girl was very happy.

A few years later, when I was 13, I wrote this acrostic poem for the "Christmas Holidays".  I hope you can read my writing and excuse my scratching out of words. I don't think this was the final version that was graded... Poetry has never been my strong suit. LOL.

And just to finish this off, were you able to see the "Christmas Star" in the skies last night? (Monday night).  I tried to get some pictures, but my camera can't zoom in on the night skies very well. Here's a few examples of what I was able to capture on my cell phone and then on my regular camera:

First attempts before it was really dark. See the little bright dot in the sky over the trees?

I thought these were kind of interesting. I had to fill with light when I edited the photo from my regular camera, and this is how it turned out:

(these first two were the result of my camera moving I think. Not sure exactly what caused this)

But this is what happened when I edited my photos by filling with light:

I put this on Facebook last night and someone said it looked like the "Covid 19". I said I hoped that meant it was all gone to Jupiter!!!

I thought those were very unique. I am sure there will be those who will post pictures through their telescopic lens, and I can't wait to see them. I wish I had some more sophisticated telephoto equipment, but that is something that is a bit beyond my budget at this time, so will just enjoy whatever anyone else shares. I do hope there will be some!

This reminds me of several Christmas songs about the Star of Bethlehem that I do love:

Beautiful Star of Bethlehem

And "We Three Kings of Orient Are"

And another good one, "When They Saw the Star They Rejoiced with Great Joy"

I hope that you will have a very "Merry Little Christmas"...and that you will rejoice with great joy at the Birth of Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, "God with us", Wonderful Counselor, The Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace...

Jesus said in Revelation 22:12-13, 16
"And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me,
to give to every one according to his work.
13.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last."

16 "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star."

Have a wonderful Christmas week!   Now please go visit over at Tuesday Four and see what others are sharing about their Christmas traditions.  Thank you to Annie from Cottage by the Sea for keeping this going each week.

Sharing also today with Rose Chintz Cottage "No Place Like Home" party.  Please go visit Sandi and our other friends when you have time!! It's wonderful to make new friends at Christmas!

  1. I love those last three songs you posted! How cool you got some pictures of the star. It was too overcast for us to see it in our area. But as you said I will enjoy others' photos.

    Merry Christmas!

    1. Thank you Cathy! I love hearing all the different Christmas songs right now. There are so many wonderful ones. Yes, I was surprised by my own pictures. The image didn't appear until I added the light...something significant about that I think... Merry Christmas.

  2. Wow, Pamela, those photos you got/doctored are truly spectacular! We couldn't see the phenomena from our house, so I'm really appreciating the pictures that others got of this wondrous event. Your poem is cute, too!
    Merry Christmas!

    1. Thank you, Martha. It was very interesting to see in the skies last night, but I was even more surprised when my dark pictures with no image showed up an image of the "star" when the light was added. I think there is something significant about that. I'm glad you liked my poem. But now you see why I don't do poetry as a rule. Just not my talent. LOL. Merry Christmas to you too. I just received your beautiful card! Thank you so much!

  3. I loved reading about your Christmas traditions. I remember getting a doctor's kit for Christmas one year and I was fascinated by all the stuff in that black bag! I'm pretty sure I saw the star last night but didn't attempt a photo. It's amazing to think that this won't happen again in our life time. Merry Christmas, my friend.

    1. I really thought I wanted to be a Dr. or a nurse at that time, but somehow that never materialized for me in my adult years. But I remember practicing on my mother...listening to her heart with my stethoscope, and checking her temperature, and putting bandaids on her. She was a good sport. Yes, it is amazing that this "star" will not be visible again in our life time. We were blessed to see it and didn't really realize just what an amazing event that was!

  4. Your acrostic was wonderful. You were an astute observer even as a teenager. A blessed Christmas week to you and yours.

    1. Thank you, Vee. Yes, there are still lots of "idiots" out there who "always want more". It is interesting that I noticed that at age 13. Nothing much has changed in 57 years!! I hope you have a blessed and wonderful Christmas as well.

Amen to Handel's Messish, vintage snapshots and handwritten notes. May the beautiful memories add joy to this sacred week.

  7. Look at that handwriting! Did you know many kids don't learn cursive anymore? This was back when we had to practice it. 😊 You mispelled sleigh, by the way.

"And behold, I am coming quickly..."

Just the other day my husband and oldest son were playing musical notes in a computer program. It sounded so unusual I was like, "Does anyone else hear music?" For a second I thought...For a second. 😂

    1. LOL. You are right, I did misspell sleigh in one place, and had it correct in the other, or maybe my dot is just in the wrong spot...LOL. Thank you for correcting my error that has been sitting there for 57 years! LOL. Oh, yes, that "music"...was it like the sound of a trumpet, perhaps? That's what I'm waiting for!! And yes, I know kids are not being taught cursive much anymore. Not sure how they will ever read any old documents and letters or even sign their names. Crazy world we live in. Yes, I am waiting for the sound of that trumpet... Merry Christmas!

  8. I so enjoyed reading your childhood Christmas recollections ... especially the handwritten acrostic! Wooden furniture and concrete floors aside, it's obvious (that) love lived there! Thank you for sharing these songs; I've always loved Anne Murray but haven't heard her sweet voice in a long time.

    1. Thank you Myra. Yes, love definitely lived there. That home became more beautiful with time and much loving care, and my parents lived there until they each died in the home that love had built, after almost 64 years of marriage and over 50 years in that house. Then we had to sell it to settle the estate, which made us all very sad, but it was time, because the heart and soul of the home had left it cold and bare again. (Gee, I didn't see that coming!) Anyway, thank you for visiting...yes Anne Murray was great in her time.

  9. Hi Pam, seeing your tree with the tinsel brought back great memories! I got a Doctor's kit too one Christmas. I love the music you mentioned. I played classical music and enjoyed the Nutcracker music. I don' think I have seen the Bishop's Wife. I will have to look into it. We tried to get pictures, but did not work out well. We looked through binoculars and saw the two planets. God's creation is beautiful!

    1. Oh yes, tinsel and icicles...what a mess, but they did look pretty! I think all of us little kids wanted to be a doctor or a nurse at one time. I thought I wanted to be a nurse when I grew up, but God had different plans. I hope you will try to watch The Bishop's Wife if you can find it. It's a classic. I loved Cary Grant in that movie so much. Oh, yes, God's creation is beautiful!!!

  10. Pamela, I loved seeing your photos; especially the one of you with your siblings! Oh, those were the days! We didn't see the star last night because the fog was so thick here but I saw some photos and it was quite something. Thank you for sharing your post at my party. Merry Christmas, Pamela! Blessings and hugs...Sandi

  11. We used to never have gifts out till Christmas morning . I also grew up without a tree, but we had a tradition of setting out a large bowl on Christma Eve and they would be holding our candies, nts and some smaller gifts the next morning .

    1. Interesting that you did not have a tree in your home...was it because of religious reasons or something else? Maybe trees weren't as plentiful where you lived? I like your tradition of setting out a large bowl on Christmas Eve and then candies and nuts, etc. would be there in the morning. That is a fun and different idea. I'm sure you were excited to see what was in the bowl! Merry Christmas Ruth!

  12. Bahahaha! It looks like Covid is the first thing I thought, too! I am loving reading what everyone has for their Christmas feasts. As I told someone, we may have something else, but we always have ham. Ham is a must. Ham is written in stone! All the goodies and extras we have must be a PA thing...sort of like the cookie table at weddings...I don't know anyone who would dream of not having all this food. Enough to feed a small village! Oh, that chair...what memories. My grandmother had a loveseat and a chair like that she'd bought somewhere in their travels from someone selling beside the road. By the time I came along she had them on the porch and they were painted a bright blue. And yes, they sure were uncomfortable to sit on. Nana eventually made seat cushions for them that helped a bit. Thanks for the smiles. I hope you and your family enjoy a wonderful and happy Christmas!

    1. That is funny that your grandmother had the same kind of chair/loveseat set. I am not sure if they were pine or cedar, but they were uncomfortable for sure. When we moved to Florida from PA., we had to leave a lot of furniture in my uncle's barn up near Clarion, and we would go back in the summer with a little cargo trailer and bring home what we could, but then for some reason it seems like some things were gone...I don't know what happened, but little by little my parents got new furniture here and there, and their home was beautiful by the time they died some 50 years later in their beloved home that love built. Yes, we always have lots of cookies and sweets that we really don't need, but it's Christmas, so why not? I don't know how much we will have this year because I'm just not up to doing a lot of baking in addition to everything else, so if my son doesn't help me bake cookies, it ain't happening! LOL. And my daughter in law is too busy working to do much baking this year. But somehow we will survive and enjoy Christmas either way! Wish we lived closer to you...I'd come steal some of your cookies! LOL. Merry Christmas!!!

    1. Thank you, Terri. Poetry has never been my thing, but I tried hard. LOL. I am sure we will have a wonderful Christmas, even if I never do get anything baked and the presents are not wrapped in classic style. We have fun and that is all that matters...we celebrate Jesus' Birth and family too! God is good!

  14. What a wonderful post. I can’t get over your COVID star photo. We drove out into the country to take photos tonight, but the degrees of separation were so much we only got photos of the two planets. But it was fun and we listened to some wonderful Christmas music in the radio! Merry Christmas!

    1. Sound like a wonderful ride together. That is all that matters...doing something fun and unique together, looking for the Christmas star and listening to Christmas music. So what if it didn't look like the perfect photos from telescopes...it is still something that we will never see again in our lifetime, so why not celebrate and enjoy it?! And I do hope that Covid flew to Jupiter and will be gone gone gone forever!!! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
