Tuesday 4~ Travel Bug

As usual, I am late getting to the party, but I hope it's not too late to join in the fun! It's been a busy few days and I haven't had time to sit down and think about this and what my answers should be...so now that I've slept on it a few nights, let's see if I can come up with anything worth sharing!  I've enjoyed reading everyone else's answers, (actually I am still trying to get around to you all, and by now most of you have moved on to the next thing!)

So pack your bags and hop on the train, and let's go!

Travel Bug

Hello! It's time for Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 and I am happy you've come by to take part.

I think finding reasons to blog and stay in touch with others, or to meet new bloggers is very important. Blogging also provides you with a record of your thoughts and ideas to leave for your family. It's a journal of sorts really that you share with others.

Summer is June 21st and people usually take advantage of the warm weather to take a trip or vacation or day trips to visit, shop or for recreation.
So could we talk about travel?

1. What are the most memorable destinations you've visited, and what made them stand out? (this could include places like museums, art galleries, etc. not only a vacation site.)
I am trying to remember...our family has not traveled extensively, so it was more the experiences and adventures we had along the way and the places we stopped here and there that were memorable. I have shared several links below to former posts that I've written about some of my family experiences in traveling when I was a child.  With our own children our vacations were mostly going to visit the grandparents, but we did manage to take a few "real" vacations throughout the years. Some of the most memorable places I remember going with our own kids were:
  • Biltmore House in Asheville, NC...it was gorgeous, and I'd love to go back now without three young kids that I had to keep in line and reminding them not to touch things!
  • Hyde Park in NY
  • Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, and all the civil war sites in the area...our 3 sons and their daddy especially loved all of this!
  • Washington DC
  • New York City and also a Yankees Baseball game at the old Yankee Stadium
  • Spent a week in a mountain cabin on "Dream Mountain, NC" with our kids, and met another young family there with kids the same ages as ours, and we ended up having so much fun, picking blackberries and making cobbler, traveling together to Maggie Valley and Ghost Mountain in the Sky.  I had been there before with my parents and siblings, (Ghost Mountain), and it was so much fun to takemy own kids there as well to experience riding up to the top of the mountain in the chair lift and coming down on the cable car.
Most memorable places we've visited (with or without the kids):

  • See below...the Cog Railway on Mt. Washington, NH

2. Which hidden gem locations have you explored that you'd recommend to others ?
  • I don't know if it's a "hidden gem", but if you ever get to go to the White Mountains of New Hampshire and go take a ride on the Cog Railway up to the summit of Mount Washington...that's an experience you'll never forget.  And no matter what time of year you are there, be sure to take a jacket with you to the summit! The temperatures in the valley on the day we went were in the 90's (July), and it was freezing/snowing at the top!

  • Here's a video so you can experience it for yourself right where you are! But still, you have to be there to feel the real thrill of the ride!

3. What’s the most unique cultural experience you’ve had while traveling ?
Not so much while traveling, but for our family, when we moved from Florida to Ohio so my hubby could attend Seminary, it was a huge cultural change for us.  We moved from the sunny south to the cold and wintry north, to farm country and all things rural. Our kids experienced snow for the first time, and we enjoyed seeing our first tractor pull. We also lived in an area where there many Amish farms, and we enjoyed the sights and sounds of the horses and buggies trotting by our house every day, and observing how the Amish lived as if it were the 1800's instead of the 1900's. That was fascinating for us. I remember one time that we stopped at a farm stand near our home to buy some vegetables and eggs, and the Amish lady had her young sons there with her, and I had my young sons with me.   I said to her (in my ignorance) that I would love for our little boys to be able to play together sometime.  She looked at me with astonishment, as did her young boys. She may have very quietly said "thank you." I realized then that I had probably made a mistake in suggesting that.  I felt sad about it because I thought it would be so much fun for our boys to experience their farm life, and for their boys to experience our life...but now I know that would never have happened.

4.What mode of transportation is your favorite for a long trip? How about a short trip?
Well, if our destination is more than two days away, I'd rather fly so that we can get there and then rent a car, so that we have more time to visit the places we are going to see. But now that we are retired, I wish we could take a nice slow road trip and visit many places along the way and come back home a different way. But sadly I think we've missed our opportunity for doing that.  Hubby doesn't really like to drive long distances anymore and health concerns are keeping us from wanting to venture very far from home.  Thankfully we have been able to take a few nice trips to the mountains with our son and daughter in law, and that will probably be the only way we will be doing any travelling (if at all) from now on.
So thankful for our son being willing to drive us to fun places!
We've come full circle!

  1. love the train, I do love me some trains, but never will go to the top of that mountains, Heights is at the top of my FEAR list and I could see that train toppling down and down in my head just looking at the video.. the only real trip I even on was at 8 years old, my mothers dad took us to Rock City, and up to DC and NEW YORK and Niagras falls.
remember my FEAR List? I cried because grandaddy pretend to be stuck in fat mans squeeze at RC and I was afraid of the open windows in the hotel close to the empire state building and I screamed when they tried to take me up in the ESB, I got spanked under statue of Lincoln under the monument, and screamed when mother stood holding my hand because I refused to ride the silly car that floated over the falls. that could be the reason that was the last TRIP I was taken on...
We did go to Orlando for 2 days and stopped in Saint Augustine, I had a 10 and 12 year old boys and they DROVE ME CRAZY so never did that again... have you picked up this is not a post for me to answer? h aha you sure went a lot of places and wow, now your son drives you to places.

    1. My hubby had a similar experience at the Empire State Bldg. as a child...His uncle held him up high so he could see over the railing at the top...and he's been afraid of heights ever since. I was surprised and amazed that he agreed to go up in the Cog Railway to the top of the mountain, but he did it and lived to tell about it!

  2. We loved the Biltmore too and also had a great time on a family vacation to the Smokies a few years ago.
The train ride looks like such fun!

    1. The train was a fun ride...it had its moments, like when they had to stop it midway up and change engines because the one we had was malfunctioning and wouldn't make it all the way up to the top...that's another story...

    1. I would love to come and visit you at your house someday. Maybe we'll figure it out yet, but we've got some things to get through first! Don't give up hope!

  4. Pam, you make me want to pack a bag! I don't know which of your experiences sounds best, but the cog railway and sleigh ride are right up there. Like y'all, health concerns are keeping us close to home, but I feel richly blessed by memories. That's why I urge my son and other young people to travel, travel, travel while they're still young enough and physically able to enjoy.

    1. yeah, I wish we could've done more traveling while we were younger, but time and money were always issues. Now we have plenty of time, but still not much money and our health holds us back from venturing too far. Oh well! I am thankful too for the memories we have. We have been blessed.

    1. Thank you! Traveling is for the young and young at heart...but we didn't have as much time then or money. Now we have plenty of time, but still no money and our health keeps us from venturing too far. We are thankful for the happy memories.

  6. I didn’t know you made it out to the west coast? What brought you to Seattle? Every time I’ve been east it’s just so much to see and takes multiple trips. I have been to NYC but never to Yankee stadium. I would have really enjoyed that. ⚾️
Growing up we traveled a lot so I have been to 40 states but never Florida! Heck there’s places in my home state, of California I’ve not seen yet and hope to before I get too old. 👵
    Enjoyed your adventures.

    1. We flew to Seattle for a church conference many years ago when we were in the ministry. Hubby didn't want to go up into the space needle because he's not fond of heights, but some friends we were with talked him into it. He just didn't look down. LOL. Oh, we only made it to Yankee Stadium because we were with my hubby's cousin and family, who lived in NJ, and he knew how to drive in the city and also paid for our tickets for the whole family! I don't think it was as expensive as it is today, and our kids loved it!

  7. Having grown kids in other states was a big motivator in traveling. My son lived in California so we went to San Francisco a few times, and to Oregon when my daughter lived there, and to Seattle when my son was there...now one son lives in Phoenix, so we go there a few times a year. We have a daughter in Delaware now, those beaches are awesome. I went on a work trip with my husband to France and was able to visit Normandy. I've been on an adventure to Ireland with one of my girls, and to Norway several times, and to Jamaica and Dominican with my husband. But guess what? I like home best, and love where I live. :)

  8. We've also been to Florida several times through the years, as my in-laws moved there. They've passed on now, so I don't know if we'll be back there, maybe as a getaway from our snowy winters sometime. Your train ride in NH sounds wonderful. (We drove up Mount Rainier, but not all the way to the top, it's almost 15 k feet!) Thanks for sharing, I love visiting here.

  9. It's never too late to join in.. not ever. Thanks for joining in! The cog railroad would not be one I'd enjoy though I love trains.

  10. You've been many places that I've never been and would like to go, like The Biltmore Mansion and Gettysburg have been on my list for years. You've had some fun adventures. We tend to stay more on the west coast. Easier to pull a camper around!
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  11. As I'm sure you know, Pamela, Danny and I are in the same boat as you two when it comes to traveling any great distance from home at this juncture in our lives. But oh, the great photos and memories we have of our many travels to the mountains and the coast! It seems like you've been lots of places with your kids, too, more than I ever took, that's for sure. Blessings!

  12. I sure am thankful for all the places we have traveled to in our life times.
Being Track and Field fans took us to Montreal and to Finland/Denmark/Sweden and Leningrad. What adventures for our boys ...then 9 and 14. Mission trips from our non denominational churches have taken us to Haiti, twice to Nicaragua, Kenya East Africa, and me to Baja Mexico 13 times.
Dave and I have also been to Israel. its hard to believe that was 25 years ago. One of the highlights of my life.
Being in the tradeshow and travel business for many years (now retired) took us to many parts of the US. Chicago, NY, Orlando, Atlanta, Nevada, and CA. We always tried to extend our time since the companies were paying for our airfare already. We visited many tourist places plus visited relatives we would not have been able to do.
One exciting trip we took when the boys were about 6 and 11 was a 3 week trip up through Canada in a Mini Motor home. Our boys talked about that trip for years.
Like you our travels have narrowed down to practically none due to health and a car that is ready to fall apart (1999 Honda) Such a great car but we can't afford to get a newer one so we stay closer to home.
I'm so grateful for our sons that take us places and do all the driving. I have to admit that I miss the freedom of just jumping in the car and just going like we used to.
    Thankful for the memories.
    Sue

  13. What fun memories. Going "out West" for the first time was the most memorable vacation for me. We honeymooned (Nov 1979) at the Grand Canyon and parts of Utah. Wow! I love visiting there. So pretty. I'm happy living here, though. Don't wanna move.
    Blessings. 💞

  14. A sleigh ride and a train ride, what fun!! This Texan lived in Canada for short while, now that was something!! And Biltmore House was the answer to the jeopardy question I got right when the contestants did not. Yea me. I would love to visit there, I did watch a documentary about it that was really interesting. Enjoyed all your answers, have a blessed day.

  16. You have really had the opportunity to enjoy some wonderful trips. When I saw that cog train I got really excited. We have tickets to ride the cog train up pikes peak in a couple of weeks. I've rode the thing several times, but never tire of it. I love train rides of all kinds. Biltmore is one that is on my bucket list. Betsy from Joyful Reflections post a lot of pictures from there and everything looks so pretty. As we age, it gets a little more difficult to travel doesn't it. Enjoyed your post!!
