Wow, this week sure has flown by! And every day has brought us a little bit of rain here and there, so we are thankful for that. Hopefully some more is on the way this afternoon around 5:00, according to the weather app on my phone. However, we've found that not to always be exactly accurate, but at least it gives us an idea of what to expect and be prepared!
With all the rain our little zinnia garden is starting to really blossom!
Some kind of bug on this one:
These were almost spent, but I brought them inside to enjoy to the very end:
One of our blogging friends, Debbi at
Debbi's Front Porch kept mentioning something about her "Old Maids" growing/blooming, but I didn't know what she was talking about, so I asked her, and she said she was talking about her zinnias. I had never heard that term before for zinnias, so I looked it up online and here is what I found on someone's post on Facebook:
"Creative Gardening"
Tinatin Noghashvili · "Did you know zinnias used to be called Old Maids? They were long lasting flowers and similar to the bright colors old unmarried women used to wear.
They were very popular from the 1920’s to the 50’s and then their popularity somewhat dwindled.
That name isn’t in use much more and zinnias are now again growing in popularity. They are easy to grow, last a long time in the vase and come in so many wonderful colors! Their ability to attract pollinators is also a big plus. Everyone should try growing this beautiful flower!"

I love that picture, don't you? And that explains about the "Old Maids" in my garden! Thank you, Debbi, for piqueing my curiosity about that!
Talking about curiosity...Whenever I step out of the back door these two curious cats come running to see what I am doing...
One would think they were joined at the hip! LOL. Looks like Blackie is running in his sleep!
They are actually hoping I'll give them something more to eat, but I think they are well fed enough!
Actually, I did do something different on the porch. Our "kids" were coming over for supper, and they always bring the Grand Puppies,Sugar and Spice. Well, if the kitties are on the back porch where they can see them, the pups go crazy and want to go outside. So we thought we'd try a little subterfuge and build a screen so the cats couldn't be seen by the dogs. Before I was smart enough to tuck in the bottom part of the sheet under the chair legs that are on the other side of this "curtain", Blackie was actually under there playing hide and seek in the curtain. Can you see his lump in the middle?
Here's the finished product, and it actually worked pretty well until the cats figured out how to get around it and showed up on the other side of the curtain where the pups could see them. I didn't get any pictures of all that excitement, but suffice it to say the best of plans don't always work when you're dealing with two curious cats and two very excitable doggies!
Here's where they ended up, but the pups were gone home by the time I took this picture. LOL.
This is what we had for supper...Rose was off from work today, and so she wanted to roast a pork loin and bring it here. I cooked the mashed potatoes and corn on the cob and we made gravy when she got here with the meat. We also had a nice green salad. It was all very yummy!
There was more to their plan to come over today. If you recall a couple of weeks ago they helped us install a "Ring" doorbell, which has worked very well and we are thankful for it. The next part of our "security package" was to install some "Blink" Cameras outside in a few places.
And here is a test to see if I can actually share a video from the back porch camera...looks like it's there. Let me know if you can open it. I'm just learning all the functions and how to operate it. This was taken just a minute ago.
You may wonder why all the security measures all of a sudden? Well, it's something we've been thinking about for a while, and to be honest, at our age, it's just something that we feel like we need to give us "eyes" all around the property. The nice thing is we can access this from anywhere we are as long as I have my phone. It gives us that extra level of security when there are things that "go bump in the night", or if we have to be away for any length of time. And yes, we know that God is always watching over us and we are not afraid, but in this day and age it is wise to be vigilant.
Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
So we are very thankful that our kids helped us set this up. It's nice to have young people around who are capable of tackling these kinds of jobs for us! We are blessed and very very thankful.
I know some have wondered how hubby is doing...he's feeling a bit better and we are very thankful to God for His help and kindness and grace. We met with our primary care doctor to go over the results of his tests, and now he is being referred to a specialist for further evaluation. We don't know when that will be yet, as we are waiting for the specialist to contact us to set up an appointment. We are just thankful that it doesn't appear to be anything that needs immediate or urgent attention, but definitely needs to be addressed. So we are taking things one day at a time and trusting God to work all things together for our good. (Romans 8:28) He knows our needs and concerns, and He is taking care of things beyond our control. And we also know that God's timing is always perfect. So we will trust in His time schedule. Again, we are thankful and blessed. However, we are still taking things a bit easier and not participating in too many extra-curricular activities. When we know better what the plan is for the future, we will be able to assess our future activities a little better.
Well, friends, it is getting past my bedtime. It's been a wonderful day and I am very thankful.
I hope you are doing well also, and I hope to catch up with you as I am able. "Good Night, Sleep Tight, Don't let the Bed Bugs bite!" LOL.
Pamela, your flowers 💐 are beautiful. Thank God for the rain. I am glad your husband is feeling a bit better. Your cats 🐈 are so sweet and cute. Your meal looks delicious. I love roast pork. Your gravy looks so tasty.
ReplyDeleteWe love zinnias and have some planted but they are just sprouting now. I never knew they were called old maids!
ReplyDeleteI could see your video, good idea to have those things installed.
Thanks for the update on your hubby!
You have large property and it’s a good idea to be able to keep an eye on it. We keep meaning to get one but there’s always something else that is needed. We do have an alarm system for our house with window and door sensors so that’s a comfort when my husband goes backpacking. As for personal security, I do have a gun and that is only for a worst case senario.
ReplyDeleteDid you notice in the first photo of Sunshine - he’s sticking out his tongue 👅 They are both so sticking cute! Love love love cats! 🐈 🐈⬛
Years ago when we lived in Omaha before, I had a big zinnia garden that Dennis built for me next to the house. I would plant oodles of zinnias, all different colors and it was so beautiful. I would plant all different heights of them so it looked like a big meadow full of color. I had so many neighbors thank me for planting them for all to enjoy. They lasted all summer long.
ReplyDeleteThat camera video is great with a very clear picture. I think it's wise of you to have the additional security. I know I feel much better with the secure doors to the outside at our condo. You have to have a code to get inside and I like that a lot.
Very good news about your Hubby. I'm glad that it's not something really serious but it's still a good idea to take things slowly.
We're at a state park tonight outside of Columbia, MO. Tomorrow we go to another state park in Indiana, just north of Louisville, KY where we're attending a graduation on Saturday. Sunday we'll go to Mammoth Cave National Park for three nights. It's been a fun, but wet trip so far! :-) Lots of rain.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
I love your zinnias! I like their shape and their colors. They look zo friendly and pretty.
ReplyDeleteI plant zinnias every year, and save the seeds for the next year. I had no idea they used to be called Old Maids. Neat information. I am so thankful for the rain we are getting. It was perfect timing for us. I had just planted the last of the garden plants, and it all needed a good drink of mother nature. I love your corn on the cob dishes. I may have to look into getting some of those. It would sure make serving it a lot more easier. I would only need two of them too.
ReplyDeleteZinnias are such a colorful group, even if not my favorites, we also had some in our former gardens. Thanks for the interesting history about the old maid name and you have taught me something new, always good😀 I know many others who have installed security systems on their homes and some residents here in the mill apts even have a Ring doorbell camera system, which we do not. Hope the news about John continues to be good, my friend.
ReplyDeleteI thought at first the fabric was to keep away the ducks! I think the cats thought it was a good challenge! lol Glad things are not critical for your husband; good to keep things easier until you have a game plan! We have the cameras-loaded on my husband's phone-I'm not thrilled with them, I can't go outside but what he wants to know what I am doing when he isn't home; I tell him I am just bothering him....
ReplyDeleteZinnia's are one of my favorite domestics. Didn't know that about the Old Maid's though! Cool. Thanks for sharing that.
ReplyDeleteCute kitties.
OK, let me/us know how the Blink camera's do please? I want security cameras again (we had some hardwired into the house but they went on the "blink" .... lol ... now they are useless) because of the way things are. It can give me time to react. I CC24/7 but want to make sure of my target. With 3 dogs in the yard it's unlikely anyone will be dumb enough to try to invade but you never know.
Blessings. 🫶🏻
I don't remember my my 'elders' growing zinnias, but that's darn interesting! (Great photo you found to accompany the legend.)
ReplyDeleteSo glad the Ring system's working out so beautifully. I'm tempted, for sure!
Gosh, that pork loin looks tasty! The last one I did in the crock pot was basically tasteless, but that's not going to stop me. So much more affordable than beef!
Prayers continuing for John. One day at a time, sweet Jesus!
Hey Myra, I recommend roasting a pork loin, fat side up, in the oven at 350, in an open roasting pan. Season as desired, but I use salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Rose added rosemary and thyme and it was really good. A 2-3 lb. roast should cook about 1 hr and 15-30 minutes, or till meat thermometer reads about 160 I think, again, depending on the size/weight of the roast you are cooking. do not overcook. meat can be pinkish in the middle. save the pan drippings to make wonderful gravy. Cooking a pork loin in the crock pot would most likely overcook it and dry it out. We buy the long whole pork loin and cut it into several roasts and freeze for later. This week's special for the pork loin was $1.98 a lb. You can't beat that for good meat at a great price! Leftovers make great cold sandwiches, sliced very thin, or put meat over lettuce/salad. Or heat meat sliced very thin and smother with gravy and make hot open face pork sandwiches (or serve over mashed potatoes and gravy).
DeleteI didn't know those facts about zinnias, Pamela, so I found that fascinating. Yours are gorgeous! Glad that your "kids" could help you with the Ring set up and cameras. We have cameras, too, but the one we have now is not reliable. Loved the idea of the kitties staying behind the sheet so the pups couldn't see them, but cats will be cats - LOL! I'll keep John and you in my prayers. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteI really like the colorful zinnias and remember my folks always growing them in their gardens. Isn't it wonderful to have the "kids" helping out with things for you? We do have a "tiny" list for Mark when he comes next week. Of course that's after we all wear ourselves out doing the garage sale. I promise there will be lots of fun things sprinkled in between too. Since Mark is 6'3" he gets the pleasure of doing things that are too high for us. (:0)
ReplyDeleteGlad John is a bit better and continue to pray for all of you.
Phil. 4:6-7 is one of my Life Verses.

A very interesting and newsy post you've got here, Pam. That piece about the Old Maids was new to me and I really like Zinnias. So thanks for that! Have you ever used a florist's "frog" to show off your Zinnias? The frog can be glass (the antique ones) or plastic and enables the long, fairly sturdy stems of the Zinnia to stand up straight without support other than the frog at the base. It's pretty neat.
ReplyDeletePS I had meant to add that John continues to be in my prayers.
ReplyDeleteold maid zinnias, who knew? I sure did not. Love the video and it works great and really clear, would you give Sunshine and Blackie a message from me. Next time would you please wander around so it doesn't look like a still photo? really cool Blinks. I got a huge laugh over the cats/dogs/screening. ha ha better luck next time..
ReplyDeleteI love seeing your flowers and have never heard zinneas called Old Maids. Thanks for educating us about that!! It's good that Blackie's hair is growing back on his tummy! Great idea to shield the cats and the pups from each other! I like your cameras. I recently put two up to cover my doors and the carport. I like having them accessible on my phone, too. Both you and John remain in my prayers. Thanks for the update!
ReplyDeleteChecking in a little late this evening. I took the day for myself. I do hope you get answers for Hubby soon. The waiting is never easy, but God has y'all as you well know. We have a Ring doorbell at our Auburn house. I feel much better having that. Not much I can do but it does give a little peace of mind. My son usually checks on our house here when we are gone. Crime has definitely picked up in our area so it pays to keep eyes on things. Those little kitties are just so cute.
ReplyDeleteKeeping you all in prayer. Your posts are always uplifting, smiles.
ReplyDeleteYour flowers are all looking so pretty. I didn't know that about Zinnias but that is a lovely photo. The cats are so cute and definitely look like great friends. Your supper looks delicious. I think the security camera is a great idea. Hope you have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt's always good to be cautious, my friend, and that's how I view the security things you've been doing around your home.
ReplyDeleteYour meal of pork loin, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn on the cob, and salad looks delicious! The gravy is beautiful.
I hope you are having a lovely weekend.
I agree, the weeks are flying by, and I am spending less time on here. I am currently doing a study on the Holy Spirit. I loved all the flowers, and the kitties look so content. Have a Happy Sunday and have a great week!
