Some Friday Thoughts

I saw this on Facebook today, and it really spoke to me.

This is so true. Sad. But true. People just don't take the time to sit down with others and really get to know them anymore. Especially our elders...grandparents, older parents. So much wisdom is being lost when we ignore the older ones around us. Take time to ask them about their youth, their childhood, the things they did in life or wanted to do. Write it down and remember it so that their memory will never fade.

I tried to do this with my father in his latter years when I was spending a lot of time with him after my mother died.  I did write down some of his stories and have shared them here in blogland occasionally.  HERE is a link to some of those stories. (that one has 3 parts, and the links are within that link)   Here's another one, Christmas at The Cabin There's more, but I won't list them all here.

Of course, those of us here in Blogland probably know more about each other than some of our closest family members and/or friends.  Why? Because we write about our lives and dreams and hopes and sorrows and silly stuff and things that make us happy and things that make us sad and things that are important to us, and we actually read these things about each other and write comments back to one another and share our lives in a special way. Some of us share pictures of everything we do, what we eat, where we've been, where we'd like to be, the people we love, the things we love...and we take the time to look at those photos and ooh and ahh and appreciate what each other are seeing and doing.  I guess that is why sometimes I feel like my best friends are here in blogland, because you probably know more about me than people I sit next to at church, or people I used to work with, or maybe even my relatives, because to my knowledge, most of those people never read my blog.  (Now we'll find out if that's true or not, because some may suddenly pipe up and say "I read it all the time! I just never tell you!"  LOL. )   Actually, one of my nieces contacted me today and said she had read my last blog about the Peach Dump Cake, and she had some questions about that and also about how we were feeling, and that really blessed my heart and made my day!!

I just asked Google about some scripture verses regarding "old age", and this is the list it gave me:

"The Bible contains many verses about aging, including some that offer comfort and others that encourage respect for the elderly:

  • Isaiah 46:4: "Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you, and I will rescue you"
  • Psalm 73:26: "Though my flesh and my heart fail, God is the rock of my heart, my portion forever"
  • Leviticus 19:32: "Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly, and revere your God"
  • Job 12:12: "Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?"
  • Psalm 92:14: "They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green"
  • Proverbs 23:22: "Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old"
  • Job 32:7: "Those who are older should speak, for wisdom comes with age"
  • 2 Corinthians 4:16: "That is why we are not discouraged. Though outwardly we are wearing out, inwardly we are renewed day by day"
  • Psalm 90:12: "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom"
  • Psalm 46:1: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble"
I like that list!  Not sure why I have "old age" on my mind so much today...probably because somedays I am really feeling my "old age" more than others...like this morning the steroids I'm taking gave me a spurt of energy so I went outside and mowed the lawn with the push mower.  I mowed for about 30 minutes, and I've been recovering ever since! LOL.   Me thinks I did more than I should have for still being in recovery mode, but it felt good to get outside (at 9 a.m. before it was terribly hot...still hot, just not as terribly as later) and actually do something!  I came in and took a shower and sat in front of the fan and basically died for about an hour or so, and then it was time to fix lunch and take a nap.  LOL.

Speaking of old,  when we took a little ride yesterday to go to our walking place, I spied this other Century Plant standing tall and blossoming for all it's worth!  Remember I told you about another one HERE a little while ago.
This one is really amazing and is in full bloom!

Notice all those "PUPS" around the bottom...new plants that will eventually grow and maybe in another 30-40 years they will bloom too!

"The common name "century plant" stems from its semelparous nature of flowering only once at the end of its long life. After flowering, the plant dies but produces adventitious shoots from the base, allowing its growth to continue.[8] Although it is called the century plant, it typically lives only 10 to 30 years.[9] It has a spread around 1.8–3.0 m (6–10 ft) with gray-green leaves measuring 0.9–1.5 m (3–5 ft) in length, each with a prickly margin and a heavy spike at the tip that can pierce deeply. Towards the end of its life, the plant produces a tall, branched stalk adorned with yellow blossoms, which can reach a height of 8–9 m (25–30 ft).  Wikipedia"

Sometimes it takes us to finally be getting towards the end of our lives before we truly stand up and bloom where we are planted...maybe here in Blogland, or wherever the Lord may lead us. The important thing is to let your light shine for God, and leave a legacy behind you that will carry on to the next generation as a witness for what God can do with a life yielded to Him.  Share the wisdom you've gained from life's experiences with others, even if they don't seem to be listening...write it down, put it out there...someone will pick it up and read it and it may change their lives!

Okay, that's my words of wisdom for today!  Keep writing friends! Your life has much value and is needed in this sad and dark world today.

  • Psalm 92:14: "They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green"

  1. It's probably the heat, inflation, and being sick for so long has got y'all down. It's almost like Matthew 24. I keep praying the Lord will take us out of the way soon or something good will happen. Praying helps.
The Scriptures on aging are good ones to remember. Those of us who are lucky to survive our youths will / do grow old. Reminds me of a line in the film "Chalk Garden" [1964 with Hayley Mills, Deborah Kerr]. I forget the exact quote but it has to do with if we don't die we have to go on living. Such an excellent movie. A classic.
It's terribly hot here too especially after 10 am or so. I'm so ready for Fall!
    Y'all stay cool. 💙

  2. I often wonder what my grandma would have blogged if she'd been around and kickin' in today's world. She passed just before this Internet thing really took off. I have books of her poetry and some paintings. I think her blog would have been like these treasures. Wisdom is out there for all to seek and find. It seems most of us try to relearn it all for ourselves, then later we sigh deeply. Coulda just believed. 😄

    "bloom where we are planted"

I was just telling someone this today.

So that is a Century Plant? Victoria Williams sang a song about one many years ago. Maybe you've heard it?

  3. That Zola quote so resonates with me on many levels. Tho' my father passed suddenly and prematurely, one of my biggest regrets is not asking more questions of my mother.
Their wedding anniversary was just day before yesterday and I found myself curious --about so many silly little things -- how she was feeling the night before, was she nervous, etc., etc.
Like Sandi, I think my dad in particular would have loved blogging. Maybe mother; looking back, I think she was probably quite lonely.

Pam, I think you nailed it when you said our blog friends know us so well. While my life's not exactly an open book, I do share more online than (I do) with the 'locals.' Sometimes I even think, "What would they ever think if they knew xxxxxxxx."

    Good food for thought here!

  4. Good good thoughts, Pam. I always love reading your thoughts and you are so right about some of our blog friends knowing more about us than our friends who we see regularly or at church. I am working on my blog mojo and plan to get back to it more. I read a bother blogger reminding me of all the things I love about blogging. I hope mine will be something the kids will look at once I am long gone. I know I would love to have a weekly thoughts post from my grandparents and great grandparents.

  5. That Century Plant is probably the strangest plant I've ever seen or heard about. Wowser! Thanks for sharing it with us! I am glad you are both feeling better but it does take time to bounce back from being so sick. Take care and take those naps!! xo

  6. Such wise words.....I feel the same way. And 'old age' has been on my mind, as well....
I'll be 76 in September and LD will be 88 in November. My friend, Ilene, will be 83 tomorrow. I'm thinking long thoughts these days. Life is still good and I love my life and continue to plan and do things and learn things and read widely. Still, we are facing these 'winter' years of living and I have been asking God for wisdom, understanding and discernment.
    Love you, Pam......

  7. I read your post and all the comments and here I am, maybe the oldest of my blogger friends and there is no one in my life that is older than I am except my husband. I am 8 weeks from 80, bob is 11 weeks from 88 and our dog is also going to be 88 when Bob turns 88... I do know that I know more about blog friends and they know more about me than any other person.. the tech who did my bone density test yesterday told me she was feeling her age, she just turned 65. my sage advice to her was wait until you hit 70, that will smack you down and don't ever think about how you will feel at 80.. blogging keeps me going, without it would be terrible. None of my family reads my blog, unless I send a link to my brother because it is something I want him to know.. all of our family are 10 or more hours away from us.

  8. I, too, think that I know many of my blogging friends better than so many people, even in my own family, Pamela. We should write our history out for our children and grandchildren so they can have a glimpse into what life was like for us. Yes, so many questions I now wish I had asked both parents and grandparents.
    Have a blessed weekend!

  9. Pamela, that's such an encouraging bunch of verses! Yes, He is our refuge and strength. I love the Corinthians verse, our inward man is being renewed day by day, it's my very greatest desire to be faithful in the small things so that can happen in me. Thank you for writing, I always enjoy visiting you here!

  10. It is so important to listen and learn while we can, isn't it? My grandmother was a teacher in a one-room school house in Kansas. How I would love to sit with her right now and ask questions. My mother in law lived in the outskirts of London during WW2 and the Blitz. She told stories but I wish I could ask questions.

I agree about blogging friends. We are a loving bunch. I've met one face to face and even stayed with her for a few days years ago. Another one I have lunch with about once a month. I hope when I get to Florida again to visit, we can meet up and have lunch. Friendships are so special.

  11. Pam: You have made some very good points here in favor of "old age". Some days, I feel like I am a century older than I am. (LOL) After the first of this past week, I felt that older age. God takes care of us who are in that "old age" group.

  12. I totally agree with what you are saying. Those are wonderful Bible verses. That Century plant is amazing. Enjoy your day!

  13. Lovely post Pam. I’m probably one of you youngest readers here (55). I read last year somewhere 100 questions to ask you grandparents or parents, I printed it off and need to sit with my 90 year old mum and ask her. It also mentioned recording the conversation and I think that is a wonderful idea. I want to do this with my 2 kids and mum. I never met my grandparents and I love that my kids have a close relationship with my mother (the other grandparents have passed).

  14. I'm like the others in the comments. Those on the blog DO know more about my everyday life than friends and family. That is one reason I have printed my blog each year since 2006. Its my journal and probably the only way my family will ever know some of my feelings and opinions.
I will be turning 81 in November and Dave will be 83 January 1st. I marvel at getting to be this old. To me 80 really feels old. But PTL, I'm still moving along and happy to be breathing..(:0)

  16. You asked the question, why are you thinking so much about old age. My reply: HOT weather makes me feel old and lethargic. Cool weather (and air conditioning!!) energize me.

That Century plant. I think I shared a couple of weeks ago that there are 2 of them in a neighbor's yard. Very tall, like what you've pictured. The stalks look to me like giant asparagus! The base of both of these, however, are wilting something terrible and every time I go past them, I expect to see everything crashed to the ground. We shall see.

  17. Hi Pamela, I enjoyed your post and especially the verses on aging. We did a couple of those verses in out Bible journaling group. My mind does not age, but my body reminds me I have! I went to physical therapy today and now I am laying on an ice pack, then I will sit on the spa later. Enjoy your week!

  18. What a unique plant. How great is it that you get to see it! I am hppy your feeling better now. Hate to think of you hurting or sick. I worry about you. There is a song called Remember Your Creator in the days of your youth, before the time of trouble will appear. It often comes into my mind. You can hear it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZdaQoyt3vA
