Thursday Thankfulness and Friday Foto Friends

Hello Friends!  This first picture should have gone with the Tuesday 4 post about Books!  But I didn't think about it until later, after reading everyone else's posts and comments on my blog.  That is how I felt after hearing how much so many of our friends love their books!   I've seen this picture many times before on Facebook, and I've always loved it because of the joy of these two dear old ladies sitting under the table having a cup of tea together with all of their books stacked up around them and just laughing and having such a great time! Oh, and eating bonbons  and candy and it looks like they have found the secret to happiness!  Yep! I could see myself and a good friend in this picture in a few years...(or maybe not so many years away...LOL). How about you? It just makes me smile...

So how has your week been going?  Ours has been busy, even without so many appointments...it just seems like the days get filled up.  Hubby got his new glasses the other day, and so when he went to pick his up I had the optician in our eye doctor's office take another look at my new glasses, just to be sure they are lined up right. She made a couple of little adjustments and I tried them again, and I do think they are better. My eyes seem to be adjusting finally, so that's good news.

On Sunday I had a little bit of sadness when I thought I had lost one of my earrings for good.
This is the remaining mate.  I knew I must've dropped it somewhere at church, and so we went back and retraced my steps everywhere, hoping to find it in some obvious place. I even sent this picture to the lady who does the cleaning on Monday morning to let her know to be on the lookout for it.  You may ask why be so upset over losing an earring? Well, this particular set had belonged to my hubby's grandmother, "Nanny Martin".  My Mother in law had given it to me with some other of Nanny Martin's jewelry years ago.  It has to be quite old, because if Nanny Martin were still living she would be around 128 years old. And even though I somehow can't envision the sweet, humble country woman that I knew, who was already in her 70's when I first met her, ever wearing these pretty dangly earrings, at some point in her younger life she must have because they were hers, and I sure didn't want to lose one of them.

This is how I remember her...

But this is how she looked as a young woman...
So anyway, back to the story...On Monday afternoon I went to the church to drop off my hubby for the Men's Bible Study, and also to pick up our church Secretary at the office to go with me over to the Parsonage for the Ladies' Bible Study. I showed her the picture of my earring, and she said, "Oh! It's been found!"  The Pastor was also there at that moment, and he said that his wife had it with her and will give it to me at the Bible study!  It seems that as I was leaving church on Sunday, one of our sweet younger women came up to me and gave me a hug.  She has very long beautiful hair, and apparently as I embraced her with a hug, my earring caught in her hair! I did not notice it at the time and neither did she, but when she was walking to her car she realized it was caught in her hair. At that point she wasn't sure where it had come from so took it back to our Pastor's wife and gave it to her to find out who it belonged to. I had already left the church, and I didn't realize the earring was missing until I got home. So you can imagine my joy to have this lovely earring returned to me.

(Nanny Martin's earrings, sitting on a quilt that she made)

Here is the matched set, along with another little black earring that also has a story.  It also belonged to Nanny Martin.  And I loved wearing that sweet little antique set of  black earrings. However, again, because these earrings are the old fashioned screw on type of  clasp, they often came loose, and sadly I lost the mate to this one at my parents' church many years ago. I searched and searched there at the parking lot and all around, but it never showed up.  So I've been sad about that one all these years, and then when I thought I'd lost the mate to the dangly pair, I thought that I would just wear the one dangly and the one little earring at the same time and call it a set  with a story!  Now I won't have to do that, but I am wishing I could turn the little earring into a pin or a necklace or something special. Not sure how to do that...but it's a thought anyway.    I am thankful that that which was lost has been found. Is it really that valuable? Probably not in monetary value, but to me the links to dearly departed loved ones have a special value that goes beyond worldly treasures. It's a way to honor the memory of someone who meant a lot to my husband and also to me.

Reminds me of this story in the Bible...

Luke 15:8-10 NKJV
The Parable of the Lost Coin

8 “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’ 10 Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Now, here's another story...

The last few days that we've gone walking I could hear the Eastern Towhee singing in the treetops, but I could not see him.   So I got the bright idea to play his "song" on my cell phone to see what would happen.  You can listen to it here:

Well, let's just say that I almost found myself being sought out by this Towhee almost immediately:
He flew to the nearest tree and kept looking around, and then he flew across the road right over top of me and went to another tree:
And you could tell he was rather excited and maybe even distressed because he could hear that other bird singing, but he couldn't find it.  This was in the morning...and he flew back and forth several times over and around me until I turned off the recording and we decided to move on before I was possibly attacked by this excited bird.

However, the next evening we came back, and I thought I might try it again to see what would happen, and sure enough, as soon as the recording started playing, the bird flew to a nearby tree and started watching and singing back...

Then he flew to another tree and kept returning the calls from the bird on the recording:

He was really quite excited about hearing this other bird.  After a little while I decided that maybe we should go because I could hear other birds calling as well, and it seemed like they were getting excited.
So I learned one thing, if you want to attract a bird to come closer, just play a recording of his call on your cell phone and you may find yourself the center of some bird attention. I don't know if it is a good thing to do or not, but I did enjoy seeing the bird up close and have these pictures to share with you.
But maybe that was just cheating a little bit...not sure...but maybe I won't do that again because as they say, "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature". LOL. (Remember that commercial for Chiffon Margarine? Now I'm dating myself...I see that was back in the 1970's! Some of you may be too young to remember!)

Well, that's all for tonight.  I hope you are having a wonderful week!

Psalm 96:1-6
1 Oh, sing to the Lord a new song!
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
3 Declare His glory among the nations,
His wonders among all peoples.
4 For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised;
He is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the Lord made the heavens.
6 Honor and majesty are before Him;
Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.

  1. My mom loved chiffon margarine. As soon as I left home, I bought butter! lol What a delicious difference!
The earrings are the old kind. I have 2 pair from my mom. They sure don’t make them anymore. Turn it into a pendant is very doable. A craft store in the jewelry section would be the place to buy the little hardware to turn it into a pin or a necklace or whatever. Those earrings never stayed on very well. I got my ears pierced when I was 9 or 10. I used to wear the old style for dress up when I was a little girl and remember how the pinched my earlobes.

    1. I have never pierced my ears. When I was a teenager and all my friends were doing it, my mother would not allow it. After I got married I really didn't care about it that much as I was busy raising babies and didn't want some baby pulling a pierced earring out of my ear! Ouch! And now that I am older I don't feel like going through that torture just to wear earrings, so I have clip ons and screw ons. I may have to screw these on a bit tighter, but yeah, that would hurt too. Oh well...they are pretty to look at even if I don't wear them. LOL. I also use butter. My mother used margarine, and my paternal grandmother would only use butter. It was always a battle at holiday dinners! I decided when I became mistress of my own home we would choose butter!

  2. I loved the story about Nanny Martin and I'm so happy that earring was found. That pair of earrings is a treasure for sure.
I do remember that add for margerine, can hear it in my head as I type, :)

    1. Thank you, Mari. I may have to just look at the earrings from now on and not wear them. Either that, or not hug anyone at church with long hair! LOL. And yes, it's funny how old commercials stick in our heads! That one was a classic!

  3. Oh, dear, I'm so glad the earring was found. That would be a sad loss. Beautiful quilt too. I lost an earring which was of my fav's about 30 years ago when we first moved into this house. It must be buried next to the carport, I'm thinking. Someone who owns this house next will probably find it and wonder what the story is.
My Mother-in-law loved Towhee's. She called the Little Chickens because they scratch around trees like chickens do. So cute.

    1. I hope your lost earring will show up one day and surprise you. A funny story...my mother had a dental bridge that when she was older was a little loose, and she would take it out when she was eating and put it on her napkin at the table. One day it was missing, and she thought she'd thrown it out with the trash with her napkin. We looked everywhere, but it never showed up. After my mother died and then 5 years later my father died and we were cleaning out their house, we moved the refrigerator, and there was her bridge, under the fridge! My sister saw it first and yelled out, "Mom! I found your bridge!!!" We laughed and wondered if Mom could hear us from heaven and was probably laughing too. So, just a thought, have you checked under your refrigerator? LOL.

  4. the bird story is fascinating. love the recording and now I am wondering just what the bird in the recording is saying. HA HA who knows, maybe it's an invitation? what a great idea to play it.. and that they come and sing.. kind of like one dog barks and they all start. we always had the cheapest margined, because we were poorer than dirt. someone gave us home made butter and my parents were over joyed. I refused to eat it, said it tasted bad. now I love it but don't eat either one.. So happy you had your lost ear ring returned and that extra one would make a great ring, or a pin or a necklace.. mother only had a couple of the screw on type, hers were all clip on and wow did they hurt my ears.. I still wore them to church, but sometimes they went in my purse during church. I think I have fat ear lobes.. I got my ears pierced sometime after my two boys were born and have never worn the other type since. they are treasures to be that old and belong to someone you loved

    1. I know I have fat earlobes and I often take off my earrings in church too. I do not have pierced ears. My mother wouldn't let me, and then when I got married and started having babies I didn't want them pulling on a pierced earring...ouch! And I really never cared that much about it and now I'm too old to do it. So I only wear earrings for an hour on Sunday. I just need to screw it on tighter next time and not hug anyone with long hair! LOL. Regarding the bird call...I hope it wasn't a mating call! That might explain how excited that bird was getting! LOL.

  5. That is a beautiful bird and it was fun he came to the birdsong. I'm so glad that your earring was found. I know how you feel about them. I'm the same way. Precious and irreplaceable in your heart. I hope you have a lovely Friday.
    Blessings,

    1. Thank you, Betsy. It was fun to see the bird come out to see where that other "bird" was calling from. But I think he was getting too excited and confused, so I had to stop it. And yes, I am happy to have the earring back...not sure if I will wear it again...but if I do I will screw it on tighter (ouch) and not hug anyone with long hair! LOL. Hope you are having a lovely Friday too!

  6. Oh I am glad your precious earring was found! Something similar happened to me with my favorite earrings and the barista at star*$ found it.
Love the story of the birds
Wish I could entice the hummingbirds that way.
I don't remember that margarine commercial but then margarine was banned from our house as my dad grew up on a dairy farm.

    1. Oh, with a hummer, I guess you'd just have to stand their and hum really loud! LOL. Funny, my mother always used margarine because it was cheaper I guess. My paternal grandmother always used butter, and they would always have a little "discussion" about this at holiday dinners. When I got married I started out using margarine, but later switched to butter and now no turning back. My grandma would be proud of me. LOL.

  7. Yes, I remember that Chiffon commercial! Good times!
I'm so happy the 'lost' earring was discovered! Before I read your idea of wearing a "set with a story" I was wondering if another piece of jewelry couldn't be made into a keepsake. I don't wear much jewelry at all, but there's a broken ring that my father gave me in '66 that means a lot. I keep it safe, waiting for inspiration to strike. (lol)
I'm so taken with that early image of Nanny Martin paired with the doilies, olden keys, buttons and pins. Did you make that?

    1. I'm sure something can be done with the little earring, but I am not that talented. I may have to talk to someone else about that. Re: the picture of young Nanny (Pearl) Martin...a dear friend of mine made that collage of items. This friend actually restored the quilt for me that Nanny had made (see this post for that story) https://pamelasopenwindow.blogspot.com/2017/08/a-day-spent-with-special-friends.html , and after she restored the quilt she made that collage using a piece of the old quilt. The picture she had in the middle was not of Nanny Martin, but I changed the picture and added a few pieces of things that belonged to Nanny. So it was a collaborative effort. I love talented people who think of such great ideas! Hope you have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you, Debby. Yes, I love that funny cartoon of the ladies. It always makes me laugh. and yes, who said retirement would be relaxing? Seems like we stay busier now than ever. maybe it just feels that way because we don't have the energy we had when we were younger and could do so much more! Thank you for visiting. I hope you have a wonderful weekend too. I'm still playing catch up with reading blogs.

  10. Pam: I have had pierced ears. I let the holes go closed once and reopened them again, only to find out I am allergic to nickel. Even those said to be "hypo-allergenic" didn't allow my lobes to heal. I finally gave the ones I had to my great-niece. To this day, I don't wear any earrings. I love your black dangly ones. Peace and blessings to you and yours.

  12. I'm so glad that you recovered your Nanny Martin's earring. I have a black jet necklace that was my grandmother's. It looks very similar to your earring. And I love the old quilt they are sitting on. I have a couple that belonged to my great great grandmother.
    Such pretty bird photos!
