Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!
What Do You See Outside YOUR Open Window Today?

Thursday Thankfulness/Friday Foto Friends
Is it Thursday already? In some ways it seems like it would never come, and in other ways this week has just flown past. I can't believe it is already the 4th day of August! My brother in law Billy's birthday, and due to so much going on, (in both families) I don't know when we will be able to get together to celebrate...but we talked to him on the phone and wished him a happy birthday. He knows we love him and we will get together as soon as possible for all concerned. Meanwhile, I thought you'd like to see something a little different tonight...
I went out to the "Secret -Memorial Garden" this morning before we left for the day, and what did I see? Yes, this beautiful rose bud getting ready to open up.
For those of you who have followed my stories for a while, you know that this particular rosebush was planted in our son's memorial garden at our previous home, and we brought this plant with us when we moved to our present home three years ago. It doesn't bloom really often, but when it does, it is quite frequently on or near special dates and family events. I could say it was blooming today for our brother-in-law's birthday, and that would be true.
But when it comes to other special days that would be significant in the life of our son Matthew,
I cut it and brought it inside and put it in a vase, where it will last a lot longer and continue to open up.
I believe this rosebud was "sent" for Matthew and his wife's wedding anniversary, which will be this coming Sunday, August 7th. It would have been their 29th anniversary. I am certain this rose will be in full bloom on Sunday. It's hard to believe it's been 29 years already...but even more so that it has been 8 years already since Matthew entered heaven's gates.
This is a picture of the Steiner side of the family at their wedding at that time.
Our son Scott, "Uncle Billy", Benton, Nicole, Matthew, me, my MIL, "Nanny", my hubby John, and my father in law "Granddaddy" Steiner. Sweet memories. I love how the rose is blossoming right on time. One of God's special "heaven-sent" blessings.
Now back to current events...Today (Thursday), hubby and I had full charge of Dixie Cottage for the day, so that our son Benton could work on his woodworking projects and also because Rose had to work at her other job at Home Depot. They are a very busy couple, and I think hubby and I are going to be getting quite involved with the every day running of Dixie Cottage.
"All Sales Final"...no turning back now!!
May I help you?
Thankfully, in some ways, it was a slower day than the previous two days since we opened on Tuesday.
I am still learning the ropes of running the cash register and answering questions, etc. Why does it always seem that everything happens at once, with long lulls in the activity in between? But we managed and survived what felt like a very long day for us two old retired folks in need of our afternoon naps...
And we are so thankful for the outpouring of support and enthusiasm from our community. Yesterday we sold four big pieces of furniture, in addition to a couple others on the previous day.
Here's what sold yesterday alone:
This beautiful big armoir...
And this lovely "skinny lingerie dresser". Its twin sold the day before.
This vintage oak restaurant table that has two leaves. They didn't want it painted so it was sold as is.
And this lovely vintage buffet, which was probably my favorite piece.
So that is why Benton needs extra time to get to work and get more pieces ready to sell.
I took a picture of this little sign that sits on the checkout counter...it rotates around from one sign to the other:
I think that really speaks to what we are experiencing here now with the new beginning here at Dixie Cottage. It took a lot of courage on the part of our kids to give up the successful store in St. Augustine and move it here to the little town of Interlachen...a town that truly doesn't have any kind of real shopping beyond Dollar Stores and Thrift Shops. But due to many considerations, including the cost of commuting back and forth and rent costs, etc. they knew it was worth the try. And so far their decision has proven to be the right choice. I cannot begin to tell you how happy the people of our little town are to have a "real store" come to town. I bet I've heard that from almost every single person who has entered the new store. They are absolutely thrilled to have Dixie Cottage here!
It's really been exciting to see how well received it has been.
Oh, while I was sitting here typing this I looked out of my window here in my little "room with a view", and saw this squirrel go running right past my window on the porch railing. I think he wanted me to tell you about something else...
I don't have a "before" picture, but when we took over this building to prepare it for the new store, it had previously been a physical therapy center. They had a mural painted on one wall of a country scene with a little stuffed squirrel perched up on a tree limb. Our kids decided they had to cover over the mural, but thought the stuffed squirrel should stay and become their new "mascot" for the store. Do you see him below?
Here he is again:
I don't know if they have actually given him a name yet, but I think that he needs one. Maybe some of you have some suggestions. I will be sure to pass along any good suggestions to the kids and let you know what the outcome is.
Meanwhile, I want to thank you all for your wonderful comments on my previous posts. I am really far behind in responding and also in keeping up with your posts. I am so sorry, but right now my "free time" is very limited. I do hope we will get into a better pattern of when we are going to be working at the store and when we will be "free", but for now we are trying to help out as much as possible so the kids can get caught up with things. So please bear with me and know that I truly want to stay in touch and will do the best I can as I am able. I am thankful for each and every one of you and I care about what is going on in your lives and hate to miss your posts.
Okay, I need to get up and move around a bit and then start getting ready for bed. I hear it calling me...
LOL.
God bless you all and Good Night!

Hello Pam,
ReplyDeleteThat rose is beautiful. What a wonderful idea to have a memorial garden. That is so special. You look so pretty working!!! Those furniture pieces are beautiful! I hope you have a good weekend. :)
Thank you, Chrissy. Yes, the memorial garden has been a place of great comfort to us over the past 8 years. Just a special place to sit and pray and meditate on God's Word and think happy thoughts about special memories. Oh, you are too kind about saying I look so "pretty working". Thank you. If you could have seen me about mid afternoon, dozing in my chair between customers...well, that probably wasn't quite as "pretty". LOL. My mind is willing and able, (well, sort of able), but my flesh is very very tired...LOL.
DeleteThis is fantastic…success…
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, we are very very thankful to God.
DeleteThe store looks wonderful and you and Hubby help those kiddos out. I am praying for a successful business. I have no doubt God sends those roses at just the right time!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sandy. We are trying to do our best, but I tell you, getting older isn't for sissies. I know you must be staying young by taking care of your sweet grandbabies. I guess this store is our new "grandbaby". LOL. And yes, the roses are a "heaven-sent" blessing in my mind for sure.
DeleteHow neat that the rose blooms for special occasions! I do believe God gives us little bits of encouragement like that from time to time to ease our grief and let us know "it's okay." Such pretty things and I'm so glad business is good! Love the squirrel! I have a squirrel mascot in my office. I actually want a real mounted one, but haven't found one yet. It's because of the Chevy Chase movie "Funny Farm." His wife in the movie buys a squirrel in an antique store and it inspires her to write children's books about a squirrel. Mine is one of those animals from the craft store made of dried grasses, twigs or whatever.
ReplyDelete"Funny Farm" is one of my favorite movies. I haven't watched it in a long time, but now I want to. I'd forgotten about that squirrel, but yes, it was actually the star of the show. LOL. Thank you for writing and for that fun memory!
DeleteI am so happy for your kids and their new business. It sounds like things are going really well. Take care my friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cathy. So far so good, and we are very thankful, even if we are tired. LOL. God is good. Amen!

ReplyDeleteThe memorial rose is so pretty, and it looks great in it's vase setting in a special place. I love Dixie Cottage and would love to shop there, I hope it's very successful in it's new location.
Thank you, Mary. I wish you could come and visit and shop here sometime. Pick up our friend Sylvia on the way! That would be such fun. (((hugs))) take care my friend. I hope you are feeling better.
DeleteHow wonderful that Dixie Cottage has made a number of big sales. I'm sure thd kids are so grateful for the support of you and your husband at this important time. May you both have the energy and strength you need.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Penny. I do appreciate that so much.
DeleteName for the squirrel??? Why, Racer. of course!!! Do you think, Pamela, if I were to send Benton and Rose copies of The Glade Series and Adventures in The Glade, that they would be willing to feature them in their store? I would not charge them a dime. I simply want God's Word through my books to serve a wider audience in this country. It didn't help any effort of promotion on my part to be hindered by the pandemic and the illnesses of my MIL and mother. I'll look forward to your response, and continue to pray for the success of Dixie Cottage.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Of course I thought of Racer right away and almost included that idea in my post above, but decided to see how others might respond as well first. Regarding the books, I love that idea, but would have to run that past Benton and Rose. They really don't have any books in the store, but it might be a fun and meaningful promotion and way to introduce our little "mascot". I will talk to them and see what they think. I am looking for ways to include a little more of a faith based influence in the store, which up until now it has not had any of that. But I think the clientele of this area might be more receptive than where they were before. Thank you for the suggestion. You know I love your books and the characters within.
DeleteThe shop looks so lovely. I think its great that you are helping out. I have some roses around my little pond. They are the miniature and come back every year. I have a very perfumey antique rose but my huge rose is the beach rose. It only blooms once a year and that's it.
ReplyDeleteSleep tight!
Thank you, Annie. We are enjoying the new activity that has been added to our lives, even if we are tired and way out of shape for such activities. It's good for us. Oh, I love miniature roses and antique roses and also the beach roses. We don't have those here in Florida, but I know my daughter in law has some up in Maine. I am sure my rose bush would bloom more often if I fertilized it and took better care of it, but I kind of love the way it blooms at just the right times...it makes it even more special and I feel like every blossom is a gift. I hope to get back to the Tuesday 4, etc., soon, but right now I'm just a bit overwhelmed. Thank you for all you are doing.
DeleteThe rose is so beautiful and the bloom time is indeed a message that all is well what a comfort when god sends these signs. So happy for Dixie cottage being so well received. We will be bringing some custom pieces for him soon. Have a blessed weekend.
ReplyDeleteGosh, that rose is simply exquisite! I don't necessarily believe in coincidences; rather, a Heaven-sent wink. You and John look so cute behind that counter, playing shop. Just don't make that a habit, OK? (LOL) That's probably the best gift you could give Ben and Rose right now. Wishing you all a blessed day!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy that the store is doing well. You look like a natural in the store and I'm positive that smile will keep folks coming back.
ReplyDeleteYour son and DIL are so fortunate the two of you will be able to fill in some gaps when they need additional help in the store.
ReplyDeleteThe rose is gorgeous!
Pam: I am glad you are able to help Benton and Rose in their new store. Update when you can. Peace and blessings to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your brother! The rose is beautiful and no doubt it was sent for their Anniversary. I think it is kind of exciting that you two might work there. It's nice to get out of the house sometimes. The store is so nice. Love the squirrel you saw. Have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteThe Dixie Cottage looks like so a lovely place....to work/help out AND to shop!! What a nice way to spend a day! And that rose is a blessing from Heaven - blooming right on time. I really like your memory garden. I wonder if there is some way we could do something like that around here?? Hmmm - Have a wonderful weekend ahead! Many blessings to you -
ReplyDeleteI am so glad the store is busy and the townsfolk are coming out to support Ben and Rose! Just so great!! I love the rose and how it always blooms for special occasions. Truly wonderful. Your and hubby get some rest!! You both look great, by the way. I love your hair shorter!! xo
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to hear that the store is doing so well! If I lived closer and money was no object, I'd decorate my whole home from there! Your memorial garden for Matthew is lovely and how poignant that the rose blooms at such special times. I'm so fascinated with that seascape on the shop wall! Do they do mail order? :D
ReplyDeleteThank you, Melanie. I wish you could come down and shop to your heart's content. I wish we could ship the seascape to you, but the cost of shipping it might make it cost prohibitive for you. That's the tough part about mail order these days. Costs have gone up so much, which also affects our ability to purchase and receive items. Vicious cycle. Have a blessed and wonderful day.
DeleteIf you were closer I'd bring it to you.
"The rose is so beautiful. I saw your photo at social media. Those beautiful messages from heaven make one's day. Your photos of your son Matthew and all your beautiful family made me smile. Thank you for sharing. The shop is so delightful. I love all the cool pieces. Shannon, who lives in North Dakota, who use to blog refurbishes beautiful pieces she finds on the roadways and other places. She makes them so beautiful again. I love that buffet. As a child my parents had a buffet that had a pulled out table. It was an incredibly heavy piece and what they called "blonde wood". I loved that and wish I knew what happened to it after my mom passed away. I have never seen a piece like that again. That little squirrel you shared outside and the stuffed one at the shop, so cute. My friend Debbie and her son Ryan were sitting outside one evening and a brave squirrel was coming up close to them. They gave me a section of an orange, he took it and happily went about his climbing. I am very far behind blogging and commenting. It seems like something is always going on. Nick has been feeling poorly again and it weighs heavy on my mind. Our son-in-law Roger came home from the hospital today. With oxygen. Noelle says she feels like she is hanging on by a thread. She knows we pray for them but today she said Mom please pray for me too. The stress has been difficult for everyone. So I appreciate all the prayers everyone has sent out. Thank you. I hope your weekend is beautiful and you enjoy your new days helping at the store. HUGS & LOVE across the miles.
