Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!

Monday Monday and Celebrations
It's Monday again! The beginning of another wonderful week! I hope your Monday is going well wherever you are and whatever you are doing. I am trying to get some housework done today as we begin preparations for a big event here next Monday, Labor Day! But first things first!
Yesterday after church we celebrated our #1 son's birthday as promised:
Here's the birthday boy Benton, enjoying his steak dinner.
Thankfully our #3 son Scott came and grilled the delicious steaks for us, which our DIL Rose brought for the occasion:
She also brought some shrimp so we had "surf and turf", baked potato, salad and Hawaiian rolls. I noticed the price of the Hawaiian rolls had gone up considerably, so I only bought one package and told everyone that was it, so don't go crazy on the rolls! Our son Scott, who is the Hawaiian roll "connoisseur" quipped it was the high cost of shipping them all the way from Hawaii that did it! LOL. Funny...I guess everyone took me seriously because there were quite a few rolls leftover, so I sent them home with Scott to enjoy. He will create interesting sliders and other mini-sandwiches with them for a few days. He loves them so much sometimes in the past I have given him his own package of them as a gift. LOL.
Here is the traditional birthday blowout picture. Everyone has to have one, regardless of how goofy we may look! LOL. Actually, we had to do this one over because the first time he blew them out I didn't click the camera quickly enough and missed it...so we had to relight the candles and do it again! LOL.
Here's a family pic with me in it...thank you Scott for doing the honors, but we should have figured out how to get the whole family in at once. We usually do, but it takes perfect "timing".
Next came the opening of gifts. I didn't get pictures of everything, but this one was "fun" because he's over 50 now and his body is breaking down...especially the knees! Hopefully the Dr. Scholl's inserts will help. Oh, he did get the Fuller Brush electrostatic sweeper for Dixie Cottage, but I forgot to get a picture of that. I'll have to take one at the store next time.
I guess that's all the pictures for now. But next week on Labor Day we are having a big "Shindig" here (who remembers that word and TV show? You'd have to be my age at least to remember that!) I may have mentioned before that our extended family has a lot of August birthdays and anniversaries, and so we decided to get together on Labor Day here at our house to celebrate. So that's why I'm starting my housework projects today since we will be working at Dixie Cottage all the rest of the week in the mornings, and by afternoon I don't feel like doing a lot of "hard work", so I'm trying to do a little bit each day and hopefully everything will get done that needs to be done. Of course, the danger is if I clean too much now I'll have to do it again before Monday! LOL.
So that's about it for today.
What kind of plans do you have for your week and/or Labor Day? Oh, we will be having a sale at Dixie Cottage this week, everything in the store is 10% off, and some items are also marked down lower. So I expect we will be busy. 10% may not seem like much until it is large piece of furniture or some other more expensive item...then every "penny" off really helps.
Okay, that's it. I think.
Some thoughts about how marvelous it is that God created us and we have birthdays to celebrate:
from Psalm 139:13-16
"For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them."

Such a wonderful scripture. Happy Birthday to your son!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes, that is one of the most powerful scriptures in the Bible that explains why we should all be pro-life!!!
DeleteYour youngest son looks just like your hubby. I am glad you all had a great time celebrating. My daughter loves Hawaiian rolls too. Yes, we are made to perfection for sure and each of us like a little individual snowflake.
ReplyDeleteYes, we never realized how much Scott looks like his Dad until he grew up and we look at our old wedding pictures and can really see the close resemblance. It seems like our kids keep changing in looks, and well, so do we. LOL. Now I look like my dad too! LOL. And yes, God created each of us uniquely and wonderfully. I like the idea of the "little individual snowflake". It's true no two are the same. God is a Master Designer!
DeleteThe meal looks delicious! What a great party you had. I enjoyed all of the photos. The dogs are so cute. I didn't know they made inserts for knee pain.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debby. Yeah, apparently Dr. Scholls makes all kinds of stuff. I hope it helps him. His knees do give him trouble but he is on his feet so much that he thinks the extra insoles might help give him more support. We shall see! Have a blessed week.
DeleteUntil you mentioned it, I had forgotten that Labor Day was coming up. We'll probably do what we always do - nothing much.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a nice family get together. Happy Birthday to your son.
Thank you, Debby. We don't always do anything for Labor Day either, since it is on a Monday, but now that the kids' store is closed on Monday that makes it a good day for everyone to get together! Yay! Hope you have a wonderful week.
DeleteYes, I remember Shindig! Aw, your images of the birthday party make me 'glad all over' (remember that one?). Lemon curd icing? Be still my heart, lol. And I love that Sugar and Spice were included. Isn't it nice to have another celebration to look forward to? It's our anniversary (4th) but I doubt we're going to do anything different. Thank you for sharing your joys!
ReplyDeletePS - I think your hair looks cute!
Oh, Happy Anniversary coming up on the 4th? Or is it your 4th? I think it must be on the 4th. Me thinks you've been together longer than 4 years?. Anyway, yes, you and I would be from the "shindig" era...and Hootenanny, etc. Back in the good old days. LOL. And yes, the lemon curd buttercream icing was very good. She's an excellent baker. Oh, the oven is just a heating element, so they will be fixing it as soon as the part comes in! Yay!
DeleteI have that same Birthday Banner!! Been using it for years! Benton's party looks like it was fun for all and the menu was perfect!! I bought the Hawaiian Butter Rolls for my dinner last Saturday. They were really good! I will be working on Labor Day since I don't have days off, but that's okay. No plans here. September 5th is Joe's birthday so I will sure be thinking of his birthday being celebrated in Heaven. Love & hugs!
ReplyDeleteOh yum! A good steak, baked potato and salad is one of my favorite meals of all. It looks like everyone, especially the birthday boy, had a good time. That's also one of my favorite scripture passages...the one I turn to when I'm having a bad day and feeling down. It never fails to give my heart a lift. I was reminded again of how close we came to connecting in the past, but didn't, when a post Dawn P. tagged both of us in popped up in my FB memories. She was thanking us for different things connected to journaling, I believe. So glad we did finally "meet."
ReplyDeleteI remember shindigs too! So much fun. The party looks like so much fun. I wish we all lived closer to have family birthdays etc.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Happy Birthday Benton! Looks like a great party! As I read those verses I began to pray for my granddaughter, who is right now being 'covered in her mother's womb'. Due in December. :)
ReplyDeleteSo glad Benton's birthday party was such a success! Looking forward to seeing your Labor Day photos, too, Pamela. We don't have any specific plans for that day, but will enjoy it nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
What a wonderful celebration. Regine

Just stopping in to say "Hi" a busy week for me also. Trying to get things cleaned up can be a challenge, the keeping it that way is even a bigger challenge. I love the story of the yellow cake. I also like the candles on it.Hmmm! I may do something like that when Jim has his birthday next month. Peace and blessings to you and yours.
